To be honest, this was my main critique of Bernandine. Yes her anger towards her husband was completely justified but when she adopted the attitude of “Well this happened to me, so I don’t care if I put another woman through the same pain, even if it’s only a one night stand” she was wrong. Gloria tried to tell her that but Bernie brushed her off with the whole “I’m not like you” thing which hurt Gloria. But like a real friend, Gloria let that go and still communicated that Bernie was wrong for what she did.
Gloria wanted a true partner as well but wasn’t going to sleep with someone else’s husband to make herself feel better.
Emotional cheating!!! I cannot be on Bernie's side with this one. She was wrong no other way to put it. No matter what the man is willing to do, if she knew he was married and still participated, she is just as wrong as the man. The rule is "leave married men alone". I don't care if his wife is dying, he is still married.
I agree about leaving married men and women alone. Yes emotional cheating is wrong but Bernie needed validation after her husband cheated on her with a white woman. I don’t agree with it but I felt like that’s why she did it. I never read the book.

@@TheGxxdGrdn the vow is "until death do you part". Trying out different women while your wife is dying isn't cute. He should be supporting his wife, if he needs support there are groups for spouses in this type of situation, church, therapist etc.
It was one day of both of them connecting on a level where they both were loosing their significant others. They didn't sleep together they SLET together spooning and it wasn't an emotional affair it was an emotional connection. She didn't disrespect herself she thought about it after and just asked what should they do. Y'all black women are so obsessed with married men and marriage and majority of u never experienced it nor will not ever be wives

Yea, it was cheating. To me cheating is anything you wouldn’t do in front of or readily admit to your significant other. The Emotional cheating in the scene is intense.

First I have to say I love your channel and your perspectives on these classic black films. It's nice to hear a film analysis that really goes deep in to culture, beliefs etc and how they are reflected in the characters and the movie itself. Keep going!!!
On to emotional cheating, i think a big reason people end up in these situations, is because many of us don't have anyone to be open and honest with. We spend so much of our relationships (intimate mostly, but friendships & familial too) pretending to be someone we think the other person wants, hiding or masking our true feelings and then because we've created this big lie we can't be honest with our friends, fam, etc for fear they'll see that we've been lying. Because of that you now have to find someone else to share your true thoughts & feelings (which we feel shameful of) and you build a whole relationship with this new person where you don't have to keep up the facade you created. Low key Bernie & Wesley need a therapist to help them process all the shit they had going on, instead of basically her becoming a side for the night.
When Bernie was talking with Gloria, she mentions that she's not looking for a new man bcuz she's tired and not ready to jump through hoops for them. The fact she was pretending her marriage was good, even though she wasn't happy and fulfilled is a major reason her marriage imploded. That always made me look at Bernie with a little side eye cuz like yall said, she knew he was cheating, she just didn't think he would leave. She's low key like Sheila (y did i get married), so comfortable with being uncomfortable and not really valuing herself and her own needs, that she was willing to be with a man who was obviously unhappy and not treating her the way she wanted. The only reason they got a divorce is cuz their husbands were willing to chose their own happiness over everything
I don't think emotional cheating is a conscious choice people make 9 x out of 10, but misery loves company and ppl who are faking find and gravitate and connect with ppl on that same type of time.

A lot of people get cheated on and go through that pain and they don't become a mistress or male lover she has no excuse. Especially knowing how much pain of being cheated on hurts. Then when her friends are co-signing for her being a mistress. How can they trust her around their men? Wrong is wrong.
I'm very emotional so yes I cry several times due to the dialog. No I don't think James and Bernie was cheating but it was gonna lead to it eventually to me. If your definition of cheating is emotional as well as physical then that's cheating for you. Emotional Cheating.

As a child, the hotel scene between Bernadine and Wesley's character always confused me. I always asked myself, why are they laying in the bed with their clothes on LOL. Even as a kid, I thought that scene was unrealistic as hell. They definitely would of smashed in real life.
