  • Hi Everyone,
    Thanks so much for checking in to view my latest video, its a long one today but ill put down the chapters so you can jump to the bits that may best interest you.
    It's been one year since I had my nearly - new, Ex Demo, low miles R1250R SPORT delivered to me and I wanted to share my experience with this bike so far.
    I've not had the chance to do many miles but I have taken her out at every opportunity and covered motorway, town and country lanes, so more or less every area most of us use our road bikes in.
    Thanks to everyone who has Subscribed, Viewed and Commented during the first year of my channel, really hope you enjoy this one.
    Next time your out.... Ride Safe...
    **With regards to the horizontal wheel valves on this bike, I've not managed to get air into the tyres without a valve extender, when I have tried the machine filler head goes nicely over the tyre valve but air does not begin to go into the tyre / a seal is not created.
    I am hearing from some people that a valve extender should apparently not be needed. I would be interested to hear from others with this style valve and if you do or do not use an extender / adapter - Please do let me know **

      Hi Barry,
      Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. The main two things I would say is at standstill use hill hold for any uphill or down hill areas and of course don’t lean it over too far at any point when not moving or if you are off the bike handling her. On the move, even at very slow speeds she is very easy to handle.
      All the best and Ride Safe.

Crash bars are a good idea especially as the engine sticks out so far, I’ve not gone for them myself I suppose as I don’t love the way they look, but for sure it’s the sensible way to protect from drops!

      Curious why did you swap an RT for the R? Since the RT seems to be the “better” bike, subjectively.

    • @davidjones9636
      @davidjones9636 2 года назад +3

      @@rafaelcordoba13 because I got the RT mainly as a 2 up bike but my wife lost interest. However, the RT is only better in terms of wind protection. The R is a more versatile bike imo and much more fun. The weight of the RT is something to consider too and defo needs an experienced rider, get it wrong going into a bend to fast and it is not as forgiving as the R. May sound strange but i find the R more comfortable

    Agree with most of your comments. I’ve now had my HP (Sport) for 24 months. I had the dealer fit a Mudslinger at pre-delivery, which stops the back tyre slinging up any road grit onto the rear shock. Highly recommended. Also fitted the new Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE, which are, IMO, a lot better. Not just grip and feel but also turn-in. Cheers.

    Another comment. I have a small rechargeable tyre pump, which I carry in a top box (I have this bike). Plenty options on Amazon. Mine is ready to go and, with the hose that comes with it, attaches readily to the adaptor on the wheel. There is no need for an adaptor. One sets the pressure to pump up to, the pump does it and then cuts out when up to pressure. A brilliant bit of kit that gives peace of mind (ca. £35 to buy).

    One of the most informative and helpful reviews, especially when mentioning how it rides, behaves, how easy (or not) it is to manage the throttle, etc. The only thing I would recommend changing is the sequence of the still images to be much slower. Faced-paced image changing is hard on the eyes. This model is under consideration as an upgrade to my F750GS. Not the same style, for sure, but that's fine. My previous bike was a naked one and it was fine. When I go on road trips I need to carry all the gear, and this model seems to be accommodating in that respect. And, R1250R with soft luggage is about the same weight as my F750GS with the vario cases (or even slightly lighter).

      I’ve owned my R1250R since nearly new and even after all the bikes I have been lucky enough to try out, my R1250R is still my favourite.
      Good luck finding a new bike, for me, even now in 2022, you won’t find anything as versatile, fun and yet comfortable and practical as this bike.

    I went to a bike shop to look at a gs (second hand) loved the engine but bought the r nine t, quite simple it looked so good ( like 90% of people it's a pure toy, indulgence)the r nine t was new, when I took it for a service at the main dealers who let me have a test ride on any bike so I chose the r1250r rwhile waiting. Wow lovely, so now still love the r nine t but am looking for a nice second hand private sale r1250r. I was really impressed with the 1250 engine and how the bike handles. The white and blue is a must have. Great review.

    • @TheWrittleRider
      @TheWrittleRider  2 года назад

      Hi Shamus, thanks for taking the time to view the video and for your comments and feedback. The R9T is now the only bmw that does not offer the 1250 engine for some reason although I imagine that will change soon enough. They are Sedona to look at for sure so as you say pure toy indulgence. The R1250R is however a much more rounded, useable machine.
      Good luck picking up a low mileage one in good condition.
      Normally quite a few about but maybe more difficult recently due to the shortage of supply of new bikes.

    I have managed to do my tyre pressures from my supermarket air and water machine with no difficulties without fitting extensions. It uses a standard push on rod type filler not a rubber hose with a clip fit connector, I haven't tried that yet. I do use a good calibrated pocket gauge afterwards to be sure of correct pressure.

    Great review of the bike . I am one year in on a 2020 R1250R and agree with all your comments except I chose black and don;t have a problem with the heated grips. I am in Vancouver, Canada , have about 3500 Kilometers on the bike both in the city and on the mountain roads and passes to Whistler and beyond - it is a great machine in all conditions. I don't come close to your height and sadly am significantly senior however your comments on how easy it is to ride still apply! Perhaps one little peeve , I bought a heated jacket liner and gloves that unfortunately can't be run through the on board auxiliary port because the current draw is too high (greater than the max 5 amps) . Required a battery harness which is a minor inconvenience. Cheers!

    • @TheWrittleRider
      @TheWrittleRider  2 года назад

      Hi Ronald, Greetings from the UK!
      Thanks for watching and giving such detail in your comments. I love this bike still after two years of ownership. The heated grips are ok, I just thought they could have done better but that said new models now have 3 settings and if you get a heated seat you can have five levels of heat! I understand it’s annoying that the charge point cannot accommodate your heated gloves and jacket and imagine in Canada it’s needed!

      @@slumgullianpass a bit late to the party, but I also have Multistrada V2. Not all that happy with it - it's too top heavy and the sound is awful, too bulky, and quite an uncomfortable seat for me - the V2 has a new scooped seat for '22. Got a new r1250r today. My joy of riding is back! Good riddance to the Multi..The r1250r reminds me of my Moto Guzzi V7. The Guzzi still has a bit more charisma with it's sound and the typical engine shaking from side to side, but the Beemer isn't too bad in the sound department either, and overall is much more powerful with a much better chassis. Hi Lenny,

      I’ve not got round to trying any of the Yamaha stable yet but have always like the look of the MT-10. I was never able to get a test ride booked in as all incoming bikes were sold! I am hoping to get out on a couple of GS models this season as I’ve not been on one yet!

    • @TheWrittleRider
      @TheWrittleRider  3 года назад +1

      Hi Lenny, yes that makes perfect sense. The older we get we need a bit more comfort! I think the R1250R is a very comfortable bike so should be a great fit. As for the heated grips on my 2019 model they are only 2 phase so yes, too cold / too hot but newer models now have 3 phase and bikes like the 1250RT and the GS when fitted with a heated seat have 5 phase which is excellent!

    Hi WR, another informative video that covers the reality of bike ownership. A more useful insight over the first ride, one hour test ride. Just wanted to know if you tektites the taller sport seat over the standard height seat given that you are a tall rider? Thanks

    • @TheWrittleRider
      @TheWrittleRider  3 года назад +1

      Hi Phil,
      Thanks again for viewing and for your kind comments.
      I am using the standard seat that comes with the Sport, so it’s middle of the road between the low and high seat.
      On my only R1200R I actually had the low seat on the bike accidentally and it still was not an issue. If your going to try the bike out there is no reason why the dealer cannot change the seat for you to try before you ride out on the test ride.
      Assuming the high seat is best for the talk rider may not necessarily be true so best to try all 3 heights I’d say.

      Hi Mr 705!
      Well, they have just released a revised model for 2023 and I’ve got a video in the edit due to come out in the next week or two.
      If you are buying second hand, even the older 1200 Model is an excellent choice if you can find one with low miles. I owned the 1200 Exclusive in thunder grey and only actually got the newer 1250 because my 1200 got written off. Depending on how you are considering to buy, there can be choices. If you have the cash then please yourself. A new one of these in sport with all the bells and whistles Is around £17k if you want to finance then the finance then pushes you towards a new bike as the APR is lower on a new bike.
      You can save a hefty amount though by going for a nearly new model ex demo for example. These are normally fully loaded bikes and save a few thousand off the book price. That said these deals are less these days since the micro chip shortage and the second hand market becoming much stronger.
      Have a good look about, try an old 1200 and the 1250 because they are very similar in how they ride.
      The nee 2023 R1250 rides exactly the same as my 2019 model in this video so really it’s all about what you prefer look wise.
      The newer 1250 has got a few extra bits of tech as standard also, but if your buying an ex demo it will be fully loaded typically.
      Good luck with the search and trust me, if you decide to buy any three of the models of this bike you will be in love.
      It just does everything you could ever need on the road.
      All the best and thanks for commenting and taking the time to comment.

    Great video! I'm just thinking about buying an R1250R or RS. Apart from the obvious solution of test drive - what would you look out for from the perspective of someone who wants to ride mainly around town but pop out for a few hours on the weekend. In theory, you could equip a naked with a windshield, but perhaps there are some other parameters where the comparison favors one of the two? Are the differences in geometry actually noticeable? Thanks in advance for any tips on what to look out for in terms of differences.

      Hi Pawel, thanks for watching and for your kind comments and question.
      Firstly, whichever bike you go for you will be getting an awesome machine. Highlights being the Shaft drive, the awesome boxer engine, low centre of gravity, pull in every gear, easy yet exciting riding experience, excellent switch gear and a market leading TFT.
      The RS is more for touring and is better into the corners and slightly easier to get onto the bike.
      Slightly more pressure of your wrists as the bars and position is slightly more aggressive but still very comfy.
      R1250R is more upright, zero wind protection but up to 60-70 mph in good weather this is fine - Top Tip - get a decent lighter helmet like a Schubert and this will help with any buffeting or fatigue.
      I prefer the look of the R1250R but this is of course down to the individual.
      The ride position is more up right also.
      The mirrors on both bikes work nicely.
      Other than that it’s really all about how the bike looks to your own eyes.
      Very similar bikes with subtle differences.
      Either bike can be used to tour and really whatever you would ever want to do on a road bike.
      I hope this helps but if you have more questions please just ask.
      All the best

    Ecellent review. How's the engine heat. in city riding or on stop lights., what is the temp range while in a mixed riding. I have a CB1000R. The four cylinder gets real hot. Part of that is engine design. Kawaski does not get that hot. When engine gets hot easily means low thermal efficiency. low mileage. I am thinking of switching to 23 model of this bike. More or less same standard looks. How do you compare it to S1000R (not RR). Does it have adjustable front/rear suspension? What is ESA suspension

    • @TheWrittleRider
      @TheWrittleRider  Год назад

      Hi Jay,
      Thanks for your questions and kind comments.
      I’m based in the UK where the temperature rarely gets over 28 Degrees.
      At these temps the engine heat is never an issue even standstill at lights.
      If you are going to get 30 degrees plus then you will feel the heat from the engine for sure.
      Comparing to the S1000R it’s simply less sporty and more comfy to ride whilst being just as quick ( I feel ).
      S1000R is chain driven and R1250R is shaft which I much prefer.
      The engine is different in each bike and the R1250R delivers a more smooth riding experience, plus the boxer engine and it’s placement makes balance and low speed moves a joy.
      S1000r has more punch but delivers in a less linear and comfortable way.
      ESA is the electronic suspension that is constantly evaluating the terrain and deciding on the best suspension set up the whole time.
      Makes for a brilliant ride.
      BMW have released a new R1250 with some revisions and I’ll be reviewing it early next year.
      Cheers and all the best.

    One of the best nakeds I have ridden. This is an honest bike that offers a pure experience without any gimmicks. Perfect ergos for me. Just cannot get over the looks, especially the headlight. The RS looks much better but the ergos are not as good (especially the handlebar). BMW should have styled this a bit like the NineT and it will sell like hotcakes.

    Hi,
    Returned to this vid now after having lost my, exact year and model when a van entered the roundabout I was traversing. I then went (while beginning 2 years of rehab) ordered a 2021 R1250GS TRIPLE BLACK as my reward towards completing Rehab. Rode it for 6 months which validated I have no inhibitions or fears of riding, only to realize… I don’t need this more capable and bigger bike. I am not going around the world!!! Sold it.
    All of this delivered me into a space of acknowledging I really miss my R1250R.
    I like the changes / updates to the 2023 as I know you would as well Mate.
    Ready to pop on ordering it but just holding off… pondering the thought that quite possibly… could there be a fuller remodel coming in 2024!?!?!?
    Any chance you can share what you have heard if anything. Would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers / Great review / I stand right beside you in the fortunate way of appreciating the abilities, looks and essence of this fine crafted functional, technological rolling peace of Art.

      Hi Paul,
      Thanks so much for watching and sharing your story. Its community that is important here.
      I love the GS, and sometimes think if I am going to change that’s what I would go for, but yes it would be wasted as I am not going to ride around the world either!
      Glad to hear you are recovered physically and mentally from your crash.
      I think when you have an accident you definitely think about whether you want to ride again but invariably as the weather improves and you see more bikes about, the bug comes back to you.
      As for the new R1250R, I am due to make contact with the new owners of my local BMW dealer ‘Williams BMW’ soon about doing a comparison video between my 2019 R1250R Sport and the new 2023 model.
      I’ll make enquiries and advise.
      It’s a lot of money to shell out if they are going to make more changes in a season or two.
      I know the difference between the 1200 and the 1250 were not huge ( even the engines were very similar in my view ).
      Will let you know as soon as I find out.
      All the best of luck with your next bike buddy,

    Fine machine but I'd swap the TFT in favour of hydraulic valve adjusters. Almost all manufacturers cite high rev impediment with them but I'm of the opinion that manual adjustment is a service time cash cow. A 1980's Honda CBX 750 had a red line of 10,000 and no valve maintenance requirements.

    I currently have a 1250 GS TE but no longer tour or do 2 up riding so I'm thinking about a change. I've tried the R1250RS but found (at 5'7") the stretch to the bars was a bit too much with the standard handlebars and I felt I was sat on it rather than in it like the GS (I prefer the sit it option) so how does the riding position and also the dynamic ESA compare between the R and RS- I found that road and dynamis on the RS was not as soft as the same settings on the GS, probably because if the difference in suspension travel? (Do you have the spirts bars on your R? as those come standard with the sports option now) TIA 😉

    • @TheWrittleRider
      @TheWrittleRider  Год назад

      Hi Adrian,
      My R1250R is from 2019 so the bars are standard. Pretty sure a dealer would give you the standard bar if you wanted one at no extra cost. I didn’t feel the sports bar made much of a difference but I’m quite tall so maybe you would. The GS is the Rolls Royce of bikes so everything will feel more connected and less comfy when you change. That said I still feel the R is all day comfortable with a great neutral upright riding position.
      Hope this helps.

    Curious about the satnav. I have a 2020rs and it seems like a big chunk of money for a nav system. I have a phone mount on the gps prep mount currently. Is the dedicated satnav that much better? Would you consider yours a must have item?

    • @TheWrittleRider
      @TheWrittleRider  2 года назад

      Hi Brian,
      Thanks for watching and for your question.
      I think with the advent of Google Maps, no sat Nav is a must have.
      I have always enjoyed having the map right in front of me on long rides into Europe for example, so for this it’s nice.
      But as you rightly day, you can fit your phone onto the bar of your bike. You can see the screen and also google maps will talk into your coms unit so to be totally honest it’s probably £500 you can do without spending.
      Plus of course no update required for google maps, but for a dedicated Nav like like you do have to update the maps from time to time and this is a cost.
      That’s my thoughts anyway.
      Hope that helped?

    • @TheWrittleRider
      @TheWrittleRider  Год назад +1

      Hi Alan,
      The 1200 to the 1250 is a very subtle difference.
      Obviously now with the new 2023 model there are more differences, but these are mostly small tweaks.
      My best suggestion would be to go and test ride the new 2023 and 2019 models and see for yourself.
      If money is no issue then of course having the newest version is an easy decision to make.
      Personally I did not notice the weight difference between the 1200 and the 1250 and I don’t imagine you will either.
      I loved my 1200 and only ended up getting the 1250 as my 1200 got written off.
      I’ve just taken the brand new 2023 R1250 out and will have the first ride review ready in a week or two. There are a couple of Shorts I’ve posted for now though on my channel.
      Essentially if your 1200 is still sound and you are not swimming in money then I would stick with your 1200 as to be totally honest there is still not a huge difference in the way both bike ride.
      Both superb!
      That’s just my point of view though, you really need to get down to your local BMW dealer and take the new one out for a spin.
      The 2019 and 2023 versions are identical in how they ride, it’s just a slight facelift and some extra tech as standard instead of optional that differs on these.
      Thanks for watching and your kind comments.
      I hope I’ve helped but do get out and try for yourself, that’s the real acid test.
      All the best and when you are out next, Ride Safe!

      Hi Kenneth, Thanks for taking the time to view and commenting. I had another viewer telling me he felt the bike hurt his neck. I am not an expert in these matters but what I will say is it’s possible for our bikes to affect our bodies in different ways, especially with such a big engine and weight of this bike. For example, I had to learn how to push my bike in and out of the garage to ensure I did not hurt myself. My physio (AK) told me (when mentioning your comment) that we all have different postures and can develop aches and pains due to this when riding motorbikes. It’s a very personal thing to each of us individually, for me no issues on the bike, only when manoeuvring off the bike but I have learned how not to hurt myself!
      I’m glad to hear the risers have helped but also maybe you should visit a physio to assess yourself also? ( only a suggestion my friend 😃).
      Either way I hope the pain goes away and your back to painless riding soon!
      All the best and next time your out ... Ride Safe!

      Got the same bike and had a GS. Both bikes gave me neck ache and like cramp across my shoulders. I too fitted risers that lifted and brought back the bars, they helped a bit. I am 193cm tall 6' 4" in old money. I think it is the rake of the bars that might have something to do with it as I don't get that ache from other makes of bike whether touring or sport. Can't think of anything else it could be. I do find that I am slightly stooped forward on the 1250R and my knees hurt after 50 miles or so. I've fitted lowered pegs, high seat (sport or comfort I think they call it) and BMW high screen which I find is not very high at all plus it is expensive £300+. All these aches and pains might be down to my age 72, old and crumbly my mate calls me but I'm not giving up yet I still feel the need for speed.

Both times rider error trying a U turn while in Neutral, thought I was in 1st. It feels like the boxer engine is awesome at speed for low center of gravity, but a problem at slow or stopping speeds where it feels like the bike is more than happy to go down on you if not careful. I'm on 6 months of ownership. I enjoy the heated grips, what don't you like about them? The only thing I don't like about the bike is its sound. It sounds like a diesel car. I wish it had more of a sport sound. Adding a slip on exhaust helps a bit, but still doesn't sound terrific or awe inspiring.

      @Texas2Tires - Thanks very much for viewing, commenting & subscribing !
      The heated grips are only 2 phase on my model so find them not hot enough or too hot. I just think BMW can do better with so many good aftermarket products out in the market. The new bikes now come with 3 phase which is better but you’ll need to get a model with heated seats to get the awesome 5 stage that they now do!
      Here is the UK it’s all about heated grips! Only 2 months a year when we don’t need them!
      The weight is something each owner probably learns about as they go, on my model the hill hold really helps with that when stopping on a steep / uneven gradient.
      As for the exhaust sound yes i agree, the Triumphs seem to make the best sounding bikes for my money.
      The R is quite quiet when ridding and at idle sounds quite tractor like!
      I do like the sound she makes as you push her up past 4/5000 rpms though.... I put some engine shots on my GoPro video towards the end of engine sound only.... I like those snippets!
      Thanks again for taking the time to comment and when your out next ...Ride Safe!

      @@TheWrittleRider Sure thing. Before I bought my bike, I watched many RUclips videos featuring the R1250RS most of which were from UK content providers. As a bonus, really nice to see the UK countryside and lovely towns. BMWs aren’t as popular in the US. Where I live in Austin, Harley and Japanese sport bikes rule the day. However Indian motorcycles are starting to out pace Harley in sales. Indians are reasonably priced and come with more tech and updated looks compared with Harley. I’d love to buy an Indian cruiser as a second bike for those days when I want to lay back and be load. Also Triumphs are showing up more and more with younger riders preferring the cafe retro style.
      I guess living in Texas the heated grips aren’t really an issue as they are in the UK. I find level one is perfect for me in the Texas winter. Level two is definitely too hot. A heated seat should come standard. After all, it’s a BMW. The winter temp here in central Texas is around 50F (10C). So again heated anything isn’t really that important. Aircon would be nice during the summer LOL. Summer is pretty much between 96-104F (36-42C), so riding with gear becomes quite unbearable. I try to stick to country roads with very few stop lights.
      Overall can’t complain as here in Texas we can ride year round. Unlike some of my friends in New York and New England area that have to store their bike for three months per year. That would drive me insane!
      As for the sound, I only like the brief couple of seconds when it starts. After that, thumbs down. However as the R1250RS is a sport “Tourer” having a quiet exhaust during touring is better on the ears. However in my case, I’m more on the sport side. I would have bought a 1000RR if I was younger. I’m too old for that aggressive seating position.
      Take care and enjoy the ride!

      This is the best bike for not dropping. I have this bike, but have engine protection bars (standard BMW issue and not too expensive). I dropped mine when maneuvering with the engine off. It rested on its bar, and I could lift it. Not a scratch on the bike itself. Saying that the pots on a boxer are vulnerable to knocking. Protection bars avoid this.

      Just a tip that you may find useful about the way you dropped your bike when u turning........after you’ve gone click, click click down until the gear lever can’t go any further, then you know you’re in first, keep your toe on top of the gear lever, that way the gear can’t jump out into neutral (I appreciate that you didn’t say your bike jumped out of first, but the same tip still applies - obviously feel free to totally ignore my tip, it was given to me by an ex-motorcycle police rider and trainer)

    I did about 6k on mine, same model, last year. I honestly can't think of a bike I would swap it for. I'm planning to do the RBLR1000 on it in June, and praying that we can get out into Europe this summer. It's a perfect bike for that sort of trip. I do have a BMW touring screen fitted, which I think makes a good difference. I fitted a Vario top box, because I think it works better for me, and doesn't look too out of place. If I could afford the BMW panniers I would buy them, but they are too dear for me at the moment. BMW could do with fitting LED headlights, but otherwise I find the bike spot on, including the two stage heated grips.

      Hi David,
      You could just not drop the bike and protect it that way😃. I have actually dropped a couple of 1200’s before getting my current 1250 and it’s so easy if you’re a little bit tired or are in an unfamiliar area where the gradient of the road when stopping just catches you out. Personally I still don’t have any protection but I understand it makes perfect sense.

      @@TheWrittleRiderI happen to watch another review of r1250r by an owner, where his long-term ended by sliding on gravel patch in a curve and puncturing the engine. This even totaled his bike (cylinder head was scratched up). True that for post of those parking lot drops perhaps the Machine Art Moto cylinder cover would do. And crash guard is just for piece of mind. I can see how people don't want to make their R1250R turn into the looks of R1250GS by adding crash guards though... style wise it's definitely unusual choice.

      @@TheWrittleRider you are right of course, in that a couple hundred pounds leaning on one leg is "heavy". I was just making the observation that it is a relative term. The key thing you said is when it tips beyond a certain point. Obviously, there is less of a margin for leaning safely with a nine hundred pound bike versus a five hundred pound bike. As there is also a good difference between a five hundred pounder and one that's only 350. Finally, a lot depends on the rider's stature and strength as to how far over that "certain point" is ;) I guess depending on the person, a 300 pound dirtbike could be considered heavy, if leaned far enough over.

    I’m surprised you don’t ride in the rain , especially since you have a rain mode , ABS and modern tyres? It was 1981 my last bike which was a Kawasaki z1000st . It had a very good shaft drive , no modern safety features like yours , tyres weren’t so good but I loved wet whether riding , it was a very big heavy bike but i only dropped it once and that was a frosty morning ride to work . But in the wet it only slipped once in a thunderstorm in Wales on an island , I felt the front end go but gripped again in time. You would be surprised how good your bike is in the wet and it’s good training to control your bike. Obviously you do have to be more careful like watching for those telltale diesel line’s etc on round abouts. But you get used to it. I alway had protection on the bike in case I dropped it and a lot of protection on me of course.

If I’m doing a longer trip then of course I’ll get on with it when it rains but as I rule I’m watching the weather App all the time once the season begins looking for a break in the weather to be able to get out there! I’m not really worried about the bike being safe, more about other road users not seeing me in poorer visibility and trickier road conditions affecting stopping distance.
