The standard thumbs up/thumbs down system just isn't cutting it. RUclips needs to break out the Super-Dooper In Case of Sheer Excellence Break Glass and Click the Thumbs Up button system.
I've come to enjoy your videos so much, clicking the simple 'Like' button just doesn't seem to be enough. Thanks again for all of your great content !!
Wow thanks so much for your kind words! We honestly had a great time with this showdown!
This whole Old Fashoned tasting series has been so much fun to watch. I'm sure I would love any of those drinks. Thanks so much or doing this. I learn a lot from you!
We had a great time and yes they were all very good!
Well done! The blind tasting is the most honest process with a head-to-head rating
Thanks for joining us!
All of the videos in this Old Fashioned challenge were fantastic, so Thank You! It's also pretty cool that there was unity in the 1st, second, 3rd ranking, but some surprises when it came to guessing which were what whiskey which made for fun. Great job folks, well done!
Thanks so much! Honestly, I shocked myself when it came to guessing the whiskeys.
I had my first old fashion several weeks ago from a very good bar and let’s just say I am intrigued. Which makes me want to try to make one of my own. So, based on this video, and another video you made on how to make an Old Fashion, I am going out today to purchase my first bottle of whiskey. I typically just drink beer. Based on this, I am going for Old Forester Rye. Wish me luck. 😊
You got this! Keep in mind you don’t have to follow any recipe to the tee. If necessary you can tweak a recipe to make it your own!
@@slbdrinks to begin with, I am going with the original, basic recipe. The two ounces rye, bitter, sweet syrup, ice, orange peel recipe. Then I’ll try your honey based recipe. And then, who knows, anything is possible. 🙂. PS. Keep up the good job with your videos. Fun to watch.
very nice, makes sense. Ryes in my opinion make the better OF... and if you use a bourbon, a higher proof makes a better OF. I really want to like OGD BiB, but the 114 is a staple next to Woodford Reserve and 1972 (either full proof or BiB). Great Vid as always....
Thank you sir! Appreciate your comments as always!
Agreed on using rye for an old fashioned. Though I do think that OGD114 is me favorite for cocktails.
Ogd 114 is an amazing bourbon mixer!
I'm not surprised by the rankings at all. OF Rye is a GREAT cocktail whiskey, I've been drinking it in my Almond Egg Nog all week. It also drinks well neat. OGD 114 is a staple in my house. It has a circus peanut note to me that goes perfectly with an Old Fashioned. Before the first video started, these would have been my top 2 guesses for best.
All 3 were honestly delicious! Was definitely a hard decision but honestly made. Thank you!
Great series! After moving from rums to bourbons 2-3 years ago I've been on a quest to find bourbons for a great Old Fashioned, trying close to two dozen in your defined $20-$35 price range. The first thing I learned is that many tasty cocktail bourbons do not hold up well in an Old Fashioned due to their lack of complexity and weak flavor composition. For now Wild Turkey 101 has been the go-to but you have given me another good option to try. Thank you!
OGD should be proud!!! Not bad having two in the top three!! Thanks for the cool demo/contest!
They all were delicious that’s a fact!
💯% I agree with your blinds. Well Done 👍 no B S, great job, thanks 👍
Thank you! Much appreciated!
It has been written in the ancient texts that the orginal coctail was rye, sugar, and a slice of lemon and it was rechristened as the Old Fashioned.
Haven't tried your version of the OF'ed, however, I going to .....
Orange Bitters - 2d, .. Agustura Bitters - 2d, .. Simple syrup - 1/4 oz, .. and lastly whiskey - 2oz.
demerara isn’t the move when it comes to syrup?
This series was awesome! Thanks so much, I literally felt I was hanging out with you all. Giggling along right with you lol. Cheers
We had lots of fun! Glad you chose to join us!
Just stumbled upon these 3 videos. The battle of the "Old" Old Fashions.
Since i have all 3, I will have to try them all and compare. Never had or heard of the demerara syrup and will need to get some. Thanks again for another awesome video.
So this isn't something fancy or overly cool, but I thought I'd share. So based on this old fashioned runoff, I have a few new bourbons on my list to get and try (thanks Kurt and gang!). Budget is a tad tight around the holidays, so I started by picking up a bottle of Old Grand Dad BiB ($21 on sale at PA FW&GS). We did the usual thing we do with new bourbons (even the inexpensive ones) - try a nip neat, then try a nip on a rock. This tells us if this is something that we might drink that way going forward. As I suspected, OGD BiB is not one something we will do much of that with, very strong, fair amount of heat burn, and you can really taste the outcome of the high rye mash bill (not a huge fan of ryes for sipping, but do like it as a mixer). We will get to making an old fashioned with it, but our first use case hack is we had a little leftover eggnog from T-day in the fridge. My thoughtful and always thinking wife suggested we spike the nog with some "brown licquor" to use up the nog, a very excellent suggestion! I had just gotten the OGD last week, so we decided to use that, just pouring a shot in about 5-6 oz of the nog. I expected to get the bourbon taste in the resulting drink, but my-oh-my what a flavor came through!! You got the rye spice, a great bourbon flavor, making it thru the nog richness, and the high proof of it showed thru and didn't get buried. Wow, that was really good....
I'm glad that I found your channel. I picked up a bottle of old grand dad 114 today and just mixed up an old fashioned. Thanks for the recommendations!
Wonderful! So glad you enjoyed it!
I just found this channel, man I’m really enjoying it. Thank you !
Haven’t tried the Old Grand-Dad, but I’ll stand by my Old Fashioned made with Bulleit Bourbon. After this, I may have to try it with Bulleit Rye.
Plz give that a try. Have to be honest, I don’t have either Bulleit bourbon or rye so I can’t refute your pick.
Bulleit's rye is vastly superior to their bourbon, in my opinion. Their bourbon is undrinkable for me. You definitely cannot go wrong with Bulleit rye.
@@phraktl Interesting, as I’ve had (and like) both. As they say, “Ain’t no ‘countin for taste.”
I just went and got a bottle of Old forester rye, made an Old fashioned. Really nice!!! Thanks! This series was fun and educational!! Cheers!
I've always been a fan of Old Forester. After watching the series, I broke out my bottles. Gotta say the OF was great in the cocktail. I thought I was the only one who mixed my bitters. Great video....
I keep ld Forrester Rye and 100 in the rotation. Have grown a big fan of OG bib. That's a great sipper as well.
Thanks for sharing!
I’m salivating watching you sample these Old Fashions!
Fantastic series guys! My go to has been OGD 114 for the ole fashion. Now I'm going to need to try the bottled in bond to see how it is. Thanks for sharing your experience and wish you all the best.
Thanks so much and same to you!
Ogd 114 is never a bad option!
Since my last writing I have found Old Forest Rye just across the river in Illinois . Eighty mile round trip. But I've been searching for months and will have it soon.....
Great job everyone! I 've never tried O F but surely will be now !! Thanks again !!
What a fun time! Thanks for joining us!
that was fun! I'm just starting to enjoy whisky. Drank wonderful Old Fashions on Friday night. I want to make my own now.
Really great showdown and very informative. If Trenton doesn't want to get in front of the camera, I suggest inviting Michelle in for a dynamic-duo episode. I'd love to hear some of her top recommendations and hear your back and forth discussion!
Great idea! I will see what she thinks! Thank you
He just wants to see her tits 😅
I had a bartender make an old fashioned with his favorite whiskey. He used Three Chord Amplified rye. And it was Good! At home I generally use Makers 46.
Very interesting! I was surprised at how good an old fashioned is with rye whiskey!
Old granddad 114 is my go-to! Adds a maple taste to me which is kind of interesting.
My go to for old fashioned cocktails is generally sazerac or bulliet 95 rye's though I also really like a makers 46. Something with some stronger personality to shine through the sweet and ice water that compliments a dark cherry amaro or superior. Rye's definitely have a leg up though if I'm making a citrus simple syrup (lime, lemon, orange and grapefruit zests in the SS) for quick OF's then old grandad mixes great since there's plenty of complexity in the syrup and cherry already.
I love your videos. Thanks for what you, Trent, Wife and Family do. Are all your shows in your library? I’m starting to document some of your drink recipes. You’ve added another layer to enjoying spirits, especially bourbons, whiskeys and rye whiskeys. I also have a nice basement bar 🥃👍 in my family room.
Your Fan, Ross
Thank you Ross! All of our shows are filmed in the basement of our home where we built out the bar. Great place to hang out with the family!
Finally bought the Old Grandad Bonded 100 proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. It makes a GREAT Manhattan and Old Fashioned. Highly recommend it.
That’s awesome you like it and have already found several good cocktails to use it for!
I'm glad you guys decided to do the finals blind. Really enjoyed this series
Appreciate that! Blind was tough not going to lie.
Surprisingly enough I've found my two favorite Whiskeys for the old Fashioned are Woodford Reserve and Bulleit. Definitely, the Woodford if you have it onboard but Bulleit has the perfect ABV to where your drink doesn't get watered down as your ice starts to melt. Definitely stay away from anything low proof otherwise your old-fashioned will just get watered down.
Agreed. I have got to get some Bulleit to try. Believe it or not I never have.
Great series!! Wish I was there to enjoy it as much as you did with the tastings.
Certainly was a lot of fun!
I only have one Rye… Templeton 4yr. It makes a phenomenal Old Fashioned! (And Templeton was supposedly Al Capone’s fav)
OGD is my #1 for Old fashioned and #2 is Bookers ;-)
We did the same Old fashioned showdown and here are our winners:
1) Old grandad 114
2) Old grandad BIB
3) Early Times BIB
Wow that’s a great little old fashion finale Kurt, nice to have a female palate in there as well to mix it up a bit. Gotta keep my eyes peeled for those 3 bottles down here in Thailand. I think I might struggle locating them unfortunately. The search begins. Really enjoy the channel guys
Really do hope you find one or all! Thank you!
Great video! Small suggestion for the taste tests...use some plain (non-ice) water to clear the palate in-between tastes.
Thanks for the info!
Love your honesty so much! The word is out on Old Forester rye 100. Bottles are selling out around my neighborhood. It's been a staple at my house for years. I finally picked up an Old Grandad BIB. Look forward to trying it! Hand cut ice?! You are the bartender Jedi! Great video. When is Trenton going to make an appearance on screen?
I keep telling him he needs to lol! You never know, maybe the live show??!!
I love OF Rye an have used it in old fashions before...very good. Also, I don't like Jim Beam at all but their double oaked makes a surprisingly good mixer for my summer lemonade/bourbon/mint cocktail.
I really enjoy your videos along with the content. I think another good old fashion series should be done but using single barrel whiskies. I'm very fond of the Russell's Single Barrel but have others to I love as well. Keep up the great content.
Thank you! Great idea
That’s fun. Glad to see OF 100 did well. Easier to find in my area than OGD.
Great time and lots of fun!
Couldn't find Old Grandad BiB so I got regular Old Grandad. Thanks for the recommendation
It's a battle of the olds to see what the best old is for an old (fashioned). Love it! I need more ryes. I am near the end of my only one being a whistle pig 10 year rye.
There are def some excellent budget friendly rye options available!
Really enjoyed this post. You have a gift for making us feel we are there. I too prefer Rye with an old fashioned. Have never tried Old Forester. That changes tonight!
Good deal! A really nice rye for about 20.00!
I can not believe you did not have Old Crow as it comes alive in an old fashioned !!
If I was sipping the three, I would go for OF Rye first so I am not exactly surprised that was the first choice. It's a really tasty rye at a reasonable price. I usually choose OF Rye over all Old Forester products except the 1920 Prohibition Style(which the best Old Forester has to offer for my needs). I regularly drink both OGD 114 & OF Rye, but based on this series of videos I will give OGB BiB another try. I drank it a great deal in the 80's when I first reached the age of drinking, but never got back into it when I started drinking regularly bourbon again in the early 2000's. I became more of a Wild Turkey 101 regular at that point.
All of the whiskeys you mentioned you can’t go wrong with. Wasn’t that long ago I gave the ogd bib a try after having 114 in the bar.
Haven't tried rye whiskey yet. I'm still drinking neat and very interested in beginning to make my own cocktails. You genuinely show how fun it is to make. Thank you for sharing
Thanks so much!
So much fun and an education...... Been searching for Old Forest RYE for months in St. Louis. Still Lookinglllll
Not sure what the deal is with that. Last I heard they were struggling getting bottles. Who knows.
Love the showdown! After watching this I've put up Old Forester Rye(OF) vs Elijah Craig Rye(EC) - to me EC was superior. OF makes for a bold Old Fashioned for sure and is great considering price, but EC also makes for a big, somewhat spicy drink, but with more delicious complexity and finish.
P.S. still can't find substitute for 2020 Kirkland 20 year Speyside Scotch's long, amazing finish in an old falshioned. RIP.
I will def try the EC rye old fashioned!
I need to look into Kirkland brand products.
mmm hand-cut ice? Never thought of this. I enjoyed watching this. I gotta get an Old Forester Rye now.
It’s really sooo good!
My brain is broken.. amazing series. 👍🏻guess I gotta go buy some Forester. ☠️
Buddy my brain was broken to trust me! Thank you
If I grabbed OGD 114 for a cocktail, I'd just skip the cocktail. ;-)
I'll keep these recommendations in mind (I've had all 3), but I make cocktails so infrequently that I just use my least favorite open whiskeys. Have to get rid of them somehow....
This was great. I always say, I don't trust any qualitative opinion 100% w/o a blind test (whiskey, beer, audio equipment, etc). Not even my own.
Everyone is different and has to make their own spirit choices that’s for sure. Some like whiskey cocktails some think it’s disgraceful lol.
Drink what you like the way you like it! I think that rule of thumb works out for everyone. Thanks for your thoughts.
I prefer the old Forrester rye to the entry level and 100 bourbons. So tasty and a great price. Makes a wonderful old fashioned!!
Without a doubt!
JTS Brown to me is the best old fashion for price! i have converted all my coworkers to my old fashion I make called the 883!
Nice! I will have to try that.
I bought the Old Forester based on this video, it is fantastic!
So glad you love it!
Damn, you guys picked the one I can't seem to find in my area. Need looking for that rye for a while and, for some reason, no one will bring it in. Great video, BTW
That 114 would have put an 8th cylinder & somewhat of a supercharge on that Old Fashion. Was hoping it would be tha winner. Aw shucks!
Honestly, I really thought I could pick the ogd 114 but I was wrong. The blind is very intriguing. You think you know but than you second guess than the house of cards fall lol. All 3 were dynamite that’s for sure!
Old Forester 100 Rye vs Alberta Rye for the ultimate showdown... You won't regret it !
Just had my first bottle of Old Forester Rye. Very enjoyable. And the price? Wow, great pour for $26 in my area. And yes, my Old Fashioned was delightful with it.
There you go! Really glad you enjoyed it!
How are Trenton and Michelle related to you? Would love to see them with you behind the bar for some episodes.
I would love that as well but they don’t want to do that. Trent says he will when we hit 100k subs lol. I am going to hold him to that! Trent is my son and Michelle is his girlfriend.
Why don't you come to the James B. Beam Distillery, in Crearmont Bardstown Kentucky, and take a tour of where I work. The same company that makes Old Grand Dad.
I would love to! We are planning on heading down to your area sometime in the spring.
I’ve said it before I’ve never met an Old Forester that I did not like… Haven’t tried the rye yet but I’m looking forward to it.
Def give it a shot! I don’t think you will be disappointed!
Good stuff!!! Recommend in the future comparisons like this that at the end you move the bottles behind their respective glasses in order of winning. Makes it easier to remember. Thanks!!!!
I agree. Learning every day so appreciate your input!
I know I'm late on commenting on this post. However, why not try this old fashioned showdown with the particular bourbons with the distillers rye counterpart. Using the same proof. For example Elijah Craig. Almost all of the tested bourbons have a rye also. Might be fun to see which distiller comes out on top in both categories!
Great idea!
And this is why an Old Fashioned is made with rye lol
You have an excellent point!
Remember ... Don't be fooled, it's the designer ice _ lovingly hand cut _ that really makes tha drink.
I love hand cut ice!
Well done, luv everthing OF
Thanks so much!
Excellent videos. Please give some thought to doing a taste showdown on wheated whiskeys and wheated bourbon.
Great suggestion thank you!
Really enjoyed this show. Rye does make the best old fashioned. Have to try old forester rye.My old fashioned is made with Woodford Rye !
Fantastic! Honestly always preferred bourbon before this tasting. Eye opener!
That was a lot of fun!
Thank you!
Im watching this a year later, but loved this episode.
Old grand dad doesnt have many flavor notes so i could see it not bringing much to an old fashion. Old forester rye had too much of a bitter finish for me but i did enjoy its flavors up front.
I think you should continue this series. Take the winner and go head to head with a more expensive bottle.
Very good idea!
Excellent, excellent finale - highly entertaining. 👏🏻
I must admit, I’m a little surprised by the outcome, but then again quality Rye Whiskeis, with their subtle tea-like herbal notes, make great mixed drinks.
I was surprised as well if you could tell from my facial expression. I wasn’t expecting the rye to win. In my mind ogd bib was so far ahead in winning the first round I really thought that one would be the winner.
@@slbdrinks I hear you; that’s exactly what I thought, too. Then again, the world of whiskey is always full of surprises. On a slightly different note, it’s been a while that I’ve been meaning to thank you for reminding your audiences to drink responsibly. 👏🏻
Thanks. You are the first person to mention that. Very important to all of us. Appreciate it!
Went out and bought a bottle of old forester rye after work. I have the other old grand dads... and well you’re right, old Forster is better to me
Great Series Y'all!!! :)
Thank you! We really had a lot of fun!
So much fun!
Thank you!
Keep up the reviews, much love from Australia
Thank you for joining us from beautiful Australia!
Great show "Larry"
Thanks Larry!
I love Old Fashions. I have yet to really find the whisky I love in it.
Where are you on your journey now? Wild turkey 101rye, old grand dad bonded get the job done so well
Well now I have a new bottle to obtain. Peated old fashions next please?
This was a lot of fun - surprised about the winner but its also my go to for mixed whiskey drinks.
Lots of fun!
It looks like that tasting was just a kick in the pants. Love the channel!
It was difficult because they all were really good!
Great show. I almost drove down to Old Forester this weekend to pick up that Rye. I haven't had it yet and they have a shortage with bottles so you can only buy one from the distilary.
I haven’t seen it in my area for several months. Was wondering what was going on.
@@slbdrinks I actually called on Friday and was told the same thing I was told last July when went went there for the tour. Covid created an issue in some way that effected the pipe line of bottles allocated for their batch of Rye. It's made and ready but not bottled. I wonder if that means it's still in barrels? That would create some extra aging I would think. 1 per customer in the store so I will take the boss with me.
Great idea! I am right behind you lol!
Awesome as usual, 👍🥃🇨🇦
Thanks much!
Love your show.
That was a fun video
How about the Knob Creek Rye? It's hardly ever included!!
Great video!
Thank you!
Time to do a rye taste off to see which rye makes the best old fashioned.
Wow! What a great idea! I love it!
Let's see how OF rye does against the next level price bracket.
That is actually a good idea!
Fun concept but face it - an Old Fashioned made with any of these would be quite good. Or any of the others you mentioned. Or many others!
You do know that more often than not, it sounds like "SOB" more than "SLB"? Not on every video, but more often than not. ;)
Lol guess I need a bit more annunciation. I did notice on this video the 2nd time I said SLB it was kind of a hack slur job lol.
Great review. I am a big fan of Woodford. Have you made an Old Fashion with a Woodford reserve product? If so what did you think?
Yes absolutely! The only Woodford I have had has been the double Oaked which is a staple in the bar. I also have two of the masters collection as well. One I didn’t like but the other I did.
I’m a new subscriber and I love a good old fashioned. My favorite bourbon right now is Henry McKenna. I was just wondering what your thoughts are on the ryes offered by Whistlepig?
I do like whistle pig. I think my problem is that I over used it so much a couple years ago I set it to the side for a while. Need to get it back out again.
😂🤣 this is amazing, it’s pretty fun 🤩 👍
Thank you!
Hard to beat OGD 114.
