I was told years ago that if you want to live full time in an RV, learn what to fix and how to repair most if not all the systems, it makes $$$ n cents...or saves lots of money in the long run. We have lived in a travel trailer while we built our house in AZ years ago, yes, learned a lot then too. But I am a doer also, the homes that we have had throughout our lifetime all have had their issues. When it comes to repairs, modifications, restorations, I am a little slow getting started, but as long as the wallet does not loose any weight, I get the job done on a reasonable time schedule, and I am impressed as well as others that stop by. Thank you again for the invite, you do make it look easy...though sometimes it is not.
Usually a bad thermocouples for the oven. If it keeps going out I would replace it for safety. If the thermocouples is not working right it shuts the gas off on the appliances. At least that's what it is supposed to do. I remember as a teenager living in a mobile home. My sister thought she had lit the oven. How ever she did light the pilot light but the thermocouples failed to shut of the gas. And next thing we knew is the over door was blown off. Needless to say it work dad up and scared the crap out of my sister. After that she told dad he could make his own toast. Also you can by a gas dector or snooper for about $59.00. I have one in my tool box. Comes in handy for those tight spaces where I can't get the soap spray. Safe travels Brian and Cindy "xtreambydesign with passion"
Thanks! We have a vlog on when the trays were installed and we reorganized the basement area. You'll love this 😎 👉changinglanesrv.com/rv-upgrades-basement-slide-trays/
when you mentioned holding the oven knob in for 5 seconds at 10:47 something I noticed in my RV oven I troubleshooter was when you hold the knob of the oven in, to light the pilot light, it's actually warming up the thermal coupler telling the system "hey the pilot light is on we can keep feeding gas".
When you adjusted the spark on the oven. You inadvertently corrected the flame contacting the sensor which tells the oven gas control that the flame is burning properly. Now the flame will stay on. Really enjoy your videos. Keep it up!
On your oven. There is generally 2 safety systems. One being for the pilot light, the other for the actual burner. Generally its a probe that is in the flame. If it goes bad it will think there is no flame and shut it all down. Hope this helps. I couldn't see your burner to well
Hey Chad. I have a similar set up in my furnace. A carbon buildup on the electrodes causes problems. Just knocking carbon off helps. I use a nonflammable break part cleaner. It cleans fine with no fire risk from the cleaning solvent. Good luck.
like your Blackstone set up on the slide. wish I had storage space like that. good tips and I also use the same leak detector as that one, good practice to be a custom to. safe travels.
We close on the sale of our home on 10/13 and will then be a full time RV couple. We couldn’t be more excited and you and Tara are the reason for our excitement. Your videos are fun and very informative. Nice job!
Though I don’t always know how to put everything into action that you show….I really appreciate your knowledge sharing! Thank you!! Blessings to you and Tara!!
I had to replace the temperature sensing tube that I in the pilot light flame. it is what holds the gas valve open when operating. if the pilot goes out the fluid contracts and shuts the valve. I had to replace the unit.. not sure why it wasnt working but that fixed my issue.
Chad , I'm in the process of learning all I can about RVs and their systems ,before I purchase my travel trailer, your way of diagnosis is similar to mine ( Career motorcycle tech) very enjoyable for me. Great videos
My trailer has a small manifold on the frame, 2 lines go in for the furnace and stove, then a quick connect for the outside kitchen 2 burner stove. There was an unused port that was plugged, so I removed the plug and installed a second quick connector, BAM I can run the blackstone at the same time too!
Chad the flame sensor and spark rod are one in the same it could be the spark rod (flame sensor) was dirty and by adjusting it with your pliers you gave it better sensitivity of the flame. By the way keep up the tech tips there great.
My RV came with a quick connect that is already regulated. Runs off the main line to the front side of the 5th wheel. I just plug into it and plug into my Blackstone. Works great.
Hey Chad and Tara. Blackstone major tip. Get you some pastry chopper/scappers with the curved handle. The slot will then fit over the lip of your blackstone thus limiting the effect of wind gusts.
Very good video. Thank you for the information on trying to fix the the propane stove and oven. I saw that after the video it broke sown again. You probably got it fixed. Thank you again for the video.
Good informational video as usual. We just got a new Grand Design 5th wheel so alot of your how to videos relate to items that would pertain to us. You make it look so simple. We watched your video on Mt Rushmore and decided to take a journey to see it. All construction is done and you can take hikes right below the monument. Beautiful!
When you described the oven problem my first thought was that it was a bad thermocoupler. I checked the oven on my 2020 Imagine and found that it does have a thermocoupler but not the type I usually find in a hardware store so it may be a RV specific type.
We were at a Grand Design rally in NY with our 2019 imagine 3170bh. We had a regulator recall with our propane. They replaced all the recalls at the rally. 👍🏻
Great tips Chad. I have found that the process of elimination almost always serves well. I plan on updating our Blackstone after watching your video. Thank you so much
That was probably your best informative video to date. Nobody on youtube really talks about propane troubleshooting. Ray from Love Your RV channel did some stuff with the furnace one time. He is good with videos like that. But you are doing some great video on RV systems.
Great stuff Chad! I am so thankful for your tech tips since our Trailer Life magazine no longer has anything for we DIYers. Our 1988 Jayco fiver(yeah, we've been RVing THAT long!) had an oven which wouldn't stay lit unless I propped the oven door open with a wooden spoon.
We have those Mopeka (however you spell it lol) LP monitors and it is convenient to just push a button to see how much LP is left. BTW Chad, I finally found an installer for the solar system and going in this week!!! Super pumped!!! Aaron from JonesN2Travel is doing it, cant wait to meet them and help out with the install.
RE: Oven woes If you don't light the pilot light, you can still light the oven burner; when oven is up to temp, the burner shuts off but can't re-start without the pilot light being lit. I think there's also an automatic valve that shuts gas flow if the pilot light isn't on - not sure about this one. We had this exact issue when the wife lit the burner only yesterday and the oven shut itself off.
I am not a full timer but I just had to jump in. I Am retired HVAC business owner so I ve run into this many times. First thing to look for is what is sensing the presence of flame? If a. Thermocouple, then it must be in the flame enough to put out sufficient current to keep gas solenoid energized. AND connection must be good for solenoid to stay open, Very small current can get lost in bad connection..If there is flame sense rod, flame rectification is happening, also small current, about 2 to 3 micro amps..often due to oxygen and heat being present, an oxide will form on the rod which is resistive, which can have big impact on a small current through the rod so the control board doesn't sense the flame current.... keep up good work Tara. You to Chad
Thank you. Great troubleshooting and equipment info. One of my stove burners doesn’t like to light, so the FIRST thing I’m going to check is the gap on the sparker!
Our GD Reflection has a quick disconnect under the basement by the door and we hook our Blackstone to it. I'm surprised yours doesn't have that also? Great video!!
The 20 PSI regulator I got from your link worked for about 15 minutes before it too, died. I ordered another from Amazon but the only one they had with the proper length hose is a 30 PSI (!) unit with a gauge on it. Needless to say all you need to do is crack open the regulator for a ton of gas to flow. Per it's gauge best operation is at 5-7 PSI.
I had the same trouble with my oven. I keep a large square pizza stone in the oven. Moving the pizza stone slightly fixed my problem. I think it was not allowing enough airflow.
To help Determine how much Propane is in my tanks I Scale them. (A little bit of a pain) But I found a Suit Case Travel Scale works Great. (Down Side is removing tank hold down pieces ) Quick and Fairly easy. Bonus is very Accurate and Small - Easy to Stow away.
WOW!!! Coincidence? I think not. Our RV has been in our driveway for the last 2 months, when the previous owner delivered it to us. Been spending the time getting familiar with everything and making my own little modifications. Just yesterday I watched videos on utube to learn about the propane system, mainly the stove and fridge. This video was times perfectly, thank you Chad for reading my mind. Or Tara for bugging him to make the repair, whichever. Question: I bought the same gas level monitor and the directions tell me to place the monitor on the bottom of the tank. That's what I did, and the readings aren't accurate AT ALL. It's the two tank monitor just like yours. I'm gonna attach it to the side like you did and see what happens. Awesome video. Sorry for the long comment.
Ours is on the bottom too. The image in the video was from under the RV. That's where it's supposed to go. I would contact them and let them know. Also, be sure to calibrate it for your sized tanks. I forget how this is done.
Amazingly helpful video this week guys... Everyone with a RV needs to know this information... Propane can be a problem, so watch this video and test everything if you think you need to.... testing the pressure is easy and extremely helpful... Keep up the great work guys...
You’re killing me! The wife sees the video before I do…says, you should be able to do that! Throws just about everything in the Amazon chart that she thinks we (I) need. Problem is, we haven’t gotten our new (brand new right out of the box new) GD Solitude yet! Holy smoke! Traded up from a Class A to a 5th wheel is costing us money! Great video!!! 💵 🇺🇸
Great video Chad. It drives me crazy to not know how much propane are in the bottles. I have something going on with our regulators as I get a wiff of propane every now and then with everything tight and shut off.
OPD is Overfill Protection Device its a float that shuts off at 80 percent thats the legal limit to fill a tank to allow for expansion yes propane is a liquid under pressure it does not control flow. The regulator controls the flow or pressure that is allowed out. Chad with my outside wallyworld BBQ grill . I noticed that like you I had to keep turning the know off and back to on really fast. Sometimes one might fire up but if one did then the other two would not. I took some sandpaper and clean the end of the pilot lighter and also where the fire hit the medal . So that they both was clean and cause good fire to ground.
After watching this video. I walked straight out the door and fixed my non working burner. Excellent video.
Awesome!!
Excellent video Chad. No detail left out. Thanks !

You guys do great videos, really enjoy them!
Great video, I have the same issue with the oven taking many many clicks to light. I'll check on the igniter gap this weekend!
Chad, you really have a nack for making things simple. Really great job!

Chad, is there nothing you can’t fix? You be da man😂.
Love every thing you teach us. Amazing!
Add a quick disconnect to a portable firepit too. You can have a fire where some places don't allow wood burning.
Definitely! 👍🏼
Nice troubleshooting explanation. Loved how you worked in the Jim Carey clip 🤣
That was all Tara's editing. 😊
Great troubleshooting advise! I learn so much from RV Videos.
Wow! That was chock full of good info. Beautifully presented. Kudos!
Thanks!
When you adjusted the spark on the oven. You inadvertently corrected the flame contacting the sensor which tells the oven gas control that the flame is burning properly. Now the flame will stay on. Really enjoy your videos. Keep it up!
Great tip about using my Blackstone on a breezy day. Good video.
I add a little dielectric grease to sensor on LP Check for a stronger connection
Great idea!
Great Information as always, thanks for the tips!!
On ovens with the flame going out on you. Thermo couple the pilot flame heats can get weak over time. You may need to replace the thermo coupler.
Always Great Info!!!! Thanks Chad & Tara!
Great video Chad & Tara!
Thank you! 😎
I had a similar issue with the igniter on our refrigerator. Same thing I just adjusted the igniter out from the burner some and it worked.

My thoughts exactly! That part you’re talking about is called thermocouple.

Interesting as I am not using a secondary regulator for mine, just the one from the TT.
Have really learned a lot from the few videos I’ve seen. Very much appreciated
Once again great video with great content! Thank you for your time to teach our fellow RV community
Thanks Chad! You always have great tips. Now I have an idea how my manometer works. I’m going to take the NRVTA course too.
