Man im boilermaker/welder for 16 years and i discovered this new opd valve man it really stumped me when i usually turn my bbq off from the gas bottle to let the gas bleed out, but just like 15mins ago the bbq kept going once i turned off the main bottle valve. Which is super weird right shouldnt the gas stop. In my head im freaking out like..still am tbh clearly not a boilermakers a5$h0le

LP technician here. What you are describing is called an excess flow valve which activates when flow exceeds what is required to operate the appliance typically 200,000 Btu per hour. The excess flow valve is located inside the the type 1 female connector attached to the regulator, not the male connector on the OPD valve on the cylinder.
The OPD valve automatic shutoff used when filling the cylinder is a secondary safety device and is not used as a means of determining cylinder volume. Only the fixed liquid level gauge (commonly mistaken for a bleed valve) is used for measurement when filling the cylinder. The fixed liquid level gauge consists of a dip tube extending inside the cylinder and a bleed screw all part of the OPD valve which will present liquid propane when the tank reaches 80%. The only accurate way to measure cylinder volume is by weight.
The reason for transporting and storing cylinders upright is to keep the relief valve (also part of the OPD valve) in communication with the vapor space inside the cylinder to prevent venting of liquid propane.
For general information 20 pound exchange cylinders are only filled to 15 pounds.

Note to welders using oxy-LP for torch cutting! OPD valves can sometimes reduce flow to insufficient levels for heavy cutting and in that case the larger cylinders without OPD are preferable.
(For those not familiar, BBQ cylinders are tapped fora a CGA 510 AKA "POL" thread which is used for welding fuel gases too.)

I have had this about 3x and never knew what was happening and burned the hair of the back of head screwing around with it taking the valve on and off a couple of times. Then when I finally hit the igniter while stooping in front of the base of the grill. The cold weather caused the gas to flow down into the base and it blasted a flame over my back like a flash bulb. It happened so fast I did not know what happened. I was lucky to have a fleece jacket but it was flash burned over half of my back. This should be common knowledge and it is not. I will telling all my gas supply store that I buy gas from and tell them to instruct their customers on this issue. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. That is good to know. In the past, I would stick a screw driver in the fitting and whack the heck out of it with a hammer and if a hammer and screw drive was not available, I would grab the tank by the handles and fling it as far and as high as possible across the yard. Both methods worked for me except for one time.

Yes , Safety is very important in everything you do but he should have mentioned a couple very important safety items , Many years ago when I began using propane appliances in the mid 70s , I've discovered that you don't have to open the tank valve all the way because propane appliances all have a regulator which greatly reduces the pressure from around 150 PSI in the tank down to around 1/2 lb of pressure from the regulator and with that huge difference in pressure , opening the tank valve a quarter turn provides more than enough gas flow to the regulator and guaranteed , Will not affect the performance of any propane appliance , I even do the quarter turn method on my torpedo heater which uses much more gas than a gas grill and without affecting the performance
Now when you open the tank valve , Open it very slowly because the tank and possibly the regulator are equipped with a slam valve which will slam shut caused by sudden pressurization or excessive flow and only open the valve a quarter turn and no further , The main reason why I strongly recommend that opening the tank valve a quarter turn only is for added safety because a couple times on my gas grill I light the burners and suddenly get a fire flashback at the venturi tubes and with the quarter turn method I was able to get the gas shut off instantly , The quarter turn method will allow you to instantly get the gas shut off in case of an emergency and what caused the fire flashback is I found spider webs in the venturi tubes which restricted the air and gas flow to the burners , So for safety's sake Only open the tank valve a quarter turn and no further so you can get the gas shut off instantly in case of an emergency
      . WARNING ⚠️
BEFORE USING ANY PROPANE APPLIANCES , ESPECIALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME OF THE SEASON , CHECK AND MAKE SURE THE VENTURI TUBES ARE CLEAR !!! Insects Especially spiders can nest in the venturi tubes and spin webs in them Restricting the air and gas flow and can very easily cause fire flashback at the venturi tubes , Especially gas grills , Check the venturi tubes because they sit outside all the time and spiders love to nest in them because of the confined space
      So before using propane appliances
Especially for the first time of the season Remove the burners and venturi tubes and blow them out thoroughly with an air jet and check the venturi tubes each time before using to make sure they are clear
This is another safety item that was not brought up but it is very important
So if the burners on your propane appliance is operating erratically ,
Most likely the venturi tubes are clogged , The most common thing that clogs venturi tubes is spider webs
So please follow these two safety tips
      ALWAYS PUT SAFETY FIRST !!!

I've gotten some tanks from the store that the OPD valve had tripped at some point and it sat for so long in the closed position that it gets stuck closed. To unstick the valve you have to hit the bottom of the tank on the ground a few times to jiggle the valve loose. I walk the tank out into the yard over area of soft grass and dirt. Pick the tank up by the top handles about 2-3 feet and then bring it back down in a controlled freefall. You don't want to just let go and drop the tank or it'll just fall over and trip the valve again. Keep you hands on the handles but just let gravity do the work of bringing the tank back down to Earth. The soft grass and dirt won't do damage to the bottom of the tank. I usually repeat about 4-5 times times and then reattach to the grill.

Hmmm.......38 years old, not unfamiliar with propane, I work at a gas plant. But changed cylinder tonight and then had low flow......this video thought me something new.

They also have a bleeder screw on the side of the valve. If they're over filled crack that bleeder for 2.5 mins. Then close it and try the tank again.

Extremely informative!!! The tank's expiration date is because of safety valve. ??? I've taken care of tanks before that were years old, and frowned that tank can't be filled cause of out of date 😢

    • @TrailFire

Expiration is for safety. Old tanks can have rust leaks or puncutres. Tanks last 12 years then time for new one with the latest safety valve

I could not figure out why my dual-fuel generator kept cutting out on propane this fall, but wouldn't on gas. And it had worked in the past. Turned out I had put on a gauge to keep tabs of how much propane it had left, and it was this gauge's safety turning off. I took off the gauge and it runs fine. Thank God!
I love using a gauge like this on my grill so I know when to change out the tank. A generator uses more propane than a grill does, must be so much that the gauge's safety thinks it's an open line.

Correct. Hi flow appliances can trick the valve. Open propane valve slow and start appliance on low slowly increasing gas flow

That’s strange. How comes I could smell the propane through my phone when he let some gas out? lol 😵‍💫

I am an old dummy for sure. I have been using tanks for 40years, both cooking and using a hand torch to start fires and to head and bend conduit. This this first video I have seen on the internal valve. I think by watching this just now I have probably thrown away a couple of good torches that I thought had clogged up and were no longer of use.,,,,$60 each at that. I have watched this twice and am now ready for that week stream of propane for sure. i will not beat the top with a wrench any more, Please nobody do what I have done. Follow these steps

I've been filling propane tanks for 20 years and there was no mention of this valve in the training. They only talked about the OPD as being an overfill protection device. Next time I get someone who complains their tank isn't working i'll know to tell them about this safety valve. Edit: it's in the connector not the valve itself like someone else here said.

I always thoughtt these were on there to prevent you from using the gas altogether. It is really safe if you can't light it.

Safety is driven by lawsuits it’s there to prevent those as well
