    5 years as an infantryman in the Marines took its toll, and I havent been able to run since getting out in 2015. I thought I'd never be able to run a mile, again, and something as stupid as this has basically fixed it... I got a little emotional, not going to lie.
    The world needs to see this, because the VA suggested surgery and pain management.

    I serve in the US Military. I am in the army and we run at minimum 3 times a week on hardball type surfaces. I got shin splints in March of 2018 and i had tried literally everything. the month long breaks, massage therapy, physical therapy and they just kept bombarding me super strict physical limitation profiles that would prevent me from doing anything and tons of Ibuprofen but every time I started back running again.... Boom they were back i almost gave up. This literally saved my career. thank you so much for the video. I went on amazon and bought the same materials you posted about on your second video. life changing.

    I never comment on RUclips videos. Just had to come back to this one. I had shin splints for MONTHS, and no amount of rest would make them go away. As soon as I would start running again the pain would return. I was skeptical at first, I don't believe that there's actual "scar tissue" being broken down with this scraping exercise, but boy oh boy does it work wonders! I scraped my shins for about 30 minutes, every other day, for 1 week. Pain is nearly all gone, and I can run again! Thank you so much for this video, nothing else worked for me

    Been suffering from shin splints for the past 2 months.I am a badminton player. I always took 2 weeks off had 1 week of painless badminton training and the pain is back again. I scraped my legs this morning and felt immediate relief. I'll keep doing this and my usual stretches and hope for the best.
    Update week 1: I scraped for 20 minutes each day 10 min for each leg . In the past 2 days I do this routine 2 times a day while doing daily tibial and calf raises and I stretch out my whole lower half multiple times a day.
    The pain is gone from my left leg but its still in my right leg however I can feel the pain being a lot lighter. I'll continue on this routine and give an update each week!
    Update 1.5: I went to practice today and my leg only hurt due to the bruises caused by scraping itself.
    Update 2: its been weeks pain is completely gone i can run, jump, sprint whatever I want

    It isn't just a matter of scraping. I had a PT scrape my calves 15 years ago in high school and it helped but didn't go away. You need to strengthen the affected, weak side with hip hikes, calf raises, and raise the toes/front of foot to strengthen the anterior shin muscles as well. Also strengthen hip abductors, especially on the affected side. Stretching of course as well and you can do myofascial work with a lacrosse ball.

    this may be helpful for healing some surface scar tissue, but the root cause is a weak soleus muscle ! Bent knee calf raises, really hammer those calves, remember soleus is a small deeper muscle that you can really see, so skinny people like marathon runners could have strong soleus but not big calves, hope this helps someone !

    • @ninety1464
      @ninety1464 2 года назад

      I did over 6 months of soleus specific training.. i increased strength in a variety of exercises by over 50% and significantly increased my work capacity.. bent knee calf raises for example I started with 12 reps at 50kg. After 6 months i did 20 reps at 90kg. I rested from running the whole time and started a graded return to running beginning with just running on the spot (I've had shin splints for 10 years and it's been one failed attempted after another with trying to get back into running).. this time was no different. The strength i gained made no difference whatsoever. A lot of clinical physiotherapy literature supports this.. that strengthening doesnt make any difference. Nor does stretching or electro shockwave therapy, ultrasound etc. Ive never tried this massage technique but seems like i have nothing to lose. Ive all but given up hope

      Here is a question: is it normal for your ankle to hurt as well? It hurts to wear hard shoes (like Docs or tall boots), rest my ankle on the bath tub, and when I walk. Is that a part of shin splints and do you happen to know a way to deal with that? Thank you!

    • @davidduncan1226
      @davidduncan1226  8 лет назад

      I wouldn't say it was normal with shin splints but sometimes the pain does go down to the inner front side of your ankle. I would scrape that also and do some light stretching on wherever the pain is.

And completely stop running until the pain is gone for at least a week. Then SLOWLY transition back into running on soft grass (low impact) every 3 days or so. THANK YOU!!! I know it's been more than a week. When my lower posterior shins were still hurting from the scraping for the first 5 days (as was warned so I wasn't concerned), I knew I had to give it more time and keep going. Also, I skype dance lessons from up north and they've had some snow storms, cancelling classes plus Thanksgiving... Monday and today (Wednesday) I was actually able to go all out, elevate, and land on my toes. No pain. NO PAIN!!! I can actually FEEL the posterior part of my shins now, whereas before (for over a year) they were numb to the touch but still hurt on the inside. I now do this technique 5 minutes before practice, do a couple stretches that give the lower posterior part of my shins a good pull, and then do the technique after practice. The past two weeks there hasn't been even the slightest dull ache. Thank you so much. I was watching my dream/goals fade with this pain. Now they are a reality again. :')

I stopped running for 3 weeks, did core stability exercices every week, used a foam-roller regulary. Eventually I started running again, small laps. 4k, 7k, 10k,... Working towards my goals without risking injuries.
      I believe that the treatment you describe helps to take away some 'muscle knots', but I think a more versatile approach to address all problems is still necessary... Run 25 miles a week for many months. Definitely recommend trying this I felt immediate relief. I also did bent knee calf stretch on stairs and straight leg calf stretch 3 2-3 minutes at a time a couple times a day. Also would find the specific spots and press on it to loosen it up and did dorsiflexion with band lying down. I still have mild discomfort over the last 5 days doing 40-50 min runs with speed work and easy days for 800m but I had a breakthrough today where my the bent knee and straight leg calf raises like 12-15 minutes a day that loosened up. Overnight from scraping I could feel the results. Definitely had bruising for the first few days. Feel very happy right now and definitely believe scraping and bent knee calf raises are a good plan a fight shin splints. I like alternating shoes with lower flats on speed days and higher arch inserts for easy days. I just used the back of a comb to scrape my calves any lotion should work. I think icing could help too much you only have so much time in a day and found getting rid of the tightness in calves was what helped me feel 80-90% at the end of day 5

      I think it’s five days later and doing this has helped even more I feel 90-95%. Definitely scrape with comb and do bent knee calf stretches throughout the day a ton. Tightness must be dealt with in calf that’s what all my pain was. Will update a month or so from now or if I end up getting pain again. Took it easy on scraping a few days ago cuz it was very tender but these last couple days have made me believe I’m 90-95%

    This is pretty much Graston technique and it definitely works. I've used it multiple times to help with nagging shin issues. Works great for any muscle issues really as it really gets any of the scar tissue build up out. Hurts like hell the first few times though.

      Yep, I use it for muscle pain or soreness anywhere and it always works great. Thanks for watching!

      I don't recommend joining the army until you have the shin splints long term remedy for you. You will end up with a stress fracture during training and get kicked out or rolled back to do it again. Be smart and get healthy before torturing yourself. I speak from experience. Been there done that.
