- In this Support Science, I talk about Sain, from Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword (FE7). Sain is widely known as a womanizer, and while most of his support conversations focus on this side of his character, I believe that his other traits, like his loyalty, talent as a knight and, being a genuinely caring person, help ground his otherwise archetypical personality.
Sain's role in the story in Lyn Mode was pretty important - he helped find, secure and protect Lyn from the beginning. At the end, despite his transgressions, proves to be among Caelin's most reliable knights, even earning him the position of Knight Subcommander. A year later, Sain is still protecting Lady Lyndis alongside his boon companion, Kent and other members of the Lyndis Legion. Lyn reuniting with Eliwood now allows us to read into Sain's support conversations.
Sain's supports are an extension of his characterization displayed in Lyn mode. He is a hopeless womanizer sleaze, and he's a loyal friend. But, regardless of how light and breezy he is, on the battle field, well, I don’t want to say he’s a hardened veteran, but he was named knight subcommander for a reason. The problem with his supports though is that there are a handful of bafflingly flat support chains which do next to nothing, if nothing at all, to flesh out his character further. This leads a lot of people to determine that Sain isn’t a “good” character. And while I can agree that he’s not the deepest character in the cast, the moments where he is forced to change his behavior into someone who takes himself seriously, however seemingly short-lived they are, round him out and dispel the notion that he’s one note, or even a gag character.

I’ve always had a soft spot for characters like Sain, a light hearted person with a likable personality.
Oh my word I never truly realized how deep that Priscilla support went.
That was just tragic.. but in a beautifully poetic manner.

Priscilla x Sain always have been a favorite of mine. I am glad it was put into the spotlight here.

I, too, am disappointed that Sain doesn't have a paired ending with Priscilla because I love their supports so much. This was a great video! Sain is without a doubt my favorite FE character

He is honestly probably the most funny character in the series and all his supports make me love him even more.
His supports with fiora being my favorite
He legit flirts with every single woman in camp and just keeps being rejected.
I'd love to see a support with viada where she tells him to just f*** off and actually get sain to reconsider his unique way of finding love.

It is a crime that his better female supports don't get paired endings. But I've always known the Priscilla line being "usual Sain until the sucker punch to the feels"; makes me wonder how much fanfiction that spawned.

His supports with Kent and Priscilla were always my favorites, and I'm really glad that you highlighted these supports in this video. ^_^
Sadly, I'd totally forgotten that he even had support with Isadora, since 1. I hardly ever used her, and 2. If I did use her, she'd automatically pair up with Harken.
Isadora is such an overlooked character, honestly.
She has lots of great supports (norably one of the only non comedic with Lowen.).
Idk why people dislike and disregard flirty male characters so easily, usually because they're lighthearted and not broody and broken. In most media, but particularly in Fire Emblem, the lighthearted characters are usually the ones who have been through the most and keep their smile face, an unbreakable spirit. They're always my favorites, Inigo and Sylvain at the top.
As someone who isn't fond of Sain and characters like him such as Virion, it isn't about him not being broody, it's the fact that a good chunk of his interactions are just being flirty and being completely dense to a situation and not being anything more. It's like a harem protagonist who can't take a hint when women are dead obvious throwing themselves at him, his archetype is the reverse extreme, who can't seem to get why his approach isn't working and continue to be annoying to the other person, and it's rarely if ever addressed. It just becomes an overused gag at that point. Doesn't help that they add a level of cockiness that some people like me find bothersome.
Sylvain for me is probably my favorite of his archetype. I thought I'd end up hating him initially since omg Virion/Sain 3.0, but nope. He actually is aware how he approaches people and tries to account for how they take to his antics, he's just persistent and would even call people out on characters like Dorothea giving him the act in return. He has his share of relationships that do the same and call him out on how his attitude and lack of care at time can be dangerous be it on the battlefield, or a person's feelings.
The whole idea that the light hearted characters have gone through a lot is part of why I love Raven/Lucius' dynamic so much. Both of them have gone through so much, but Lucius staying as upbeat and nice as he has is part of what helps Raven. His niceness helps him on a baseline level, but his experiences arr what makes Raven listen.
I have only seen playthroughs of Blazing Sword, but I enjoyed Sain quite a lot. And I'm currently playing Three Houses, and Sylvain is like a breath of fresh air.
I actually love SainxRebecca. When she hands the letter back to him, I die laughing.

Well, Sain is a much simpler character than Dimitri.
@@gratedshtick to be fair, 90% of the 3H cast is bound to have more character to talk about, good or bad. There's simply so much more story given to each character, while games like FE7 had far more limited chance to interact and develop each other's characters.

If you do more FE7 characters, I hope you do Pent and Louise. Louise's imparting her wisdom to Rebecca and Pent just gushing about Magic with Canas are some very wholesome times.
I think his loyalty to Kent outweighs his loyalty to Lyn. Although what if the Skirtchasing persona is a defense mechanism that is also similar to Sylvain but in a different way? While I have my assumptions, I won't go deep with it.

I like this kind of support science cause it highlights how a character can have meaningful moments, even if they’re not as important to the plot. Not all character development needs to be a big breakthrough, it can be through small steps.
But what is a big breakthrough is that it’s Ghast’s birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GHAST!
I never got around to getting every support in FE7, so learning about that Sain/Priscilla one both touched me and made me a bit sad. I have to agree though, that in my experience, the Kent/Sain support line was really fun to experience the first time around.

Sain and Priscilla's support was always one of my favourites from the first time I unlocked it and I was heartbroken when I saw they didnt have a paired ending at the end of that playthrough
The moment Sain became one of my favorite units came on the group's first visit to the Dread Isle. In the mission before Eliwood's father dies, if Sain is deployed, he talks about how Marquess Laus caused Lyn so much grief, and that he wanted to make him pay on behalf of Caelin. Naturally, I had Sain deliver the final blow

You know, when it comes to Fire Emblem, Sain has always had a place in my heart. I’ve always liked the parts of Sain that didn’t have to do with skirt-chasing, and perhaps this may seem a bit childish, but, in fact, I dare say Sain, despite being fictional, is someone I’ve wished I could be like.

My first time playing through Lyn Mode, I engaged Ludgren with Sain and read the special dialogue, and was thinking, "So because of Sain's reputation, people think of him as dishonorable, and that's why Ludgren thinks he can bribe him."
Sain is the Johnny Cage of the Blazing Sword cast. And Fiora is arguably his Sonya Blade.
I always liked Sain as character but I could never find the words. Thanks for this! It helped understand why I think he's so cool!

Im personally a big Lyn and Sain fan, but I do like how Sain sees the fondness his friend has for Lyn and decides to give Kent the opportunity. Makes me love his character more that he is willing to put loyalty and bonds over love.

I thought it was only me. It seems to me that so many people are able to see how deep some supports are, which makes me feel dumb being unable to notice such complexity.

Sain needs to be in FEH!!! I’m half expecting the new banner in a few days to be 3H, half expecting it to be Elibe.
Surprised he hasn't been added yet. Kent and Sain are the "Stahl and Sully" of Fe 7, not just in archetype, but in terms of early game characters that make an impression on people.
Feh has been pretty decent about banners the past 1.5 years so it can be anything really. Bar of course FE 4 or 5, not just cause it got alts recently, but in general they don't get a lot of love.
Still no Glorious Voice Acted Sain. FEH sure had one job.

This video really made me want to read GBA supports. Its a crime that you can only get 1 & 2/3 of a support per run and, as a result, many of the characters come off as shallow.
Rebecca is an interesting character. Her hopes and dreams and discovery along the journey is thematic and enjoyable.
Damn, great to see you back, and with one of my favorites too! If it weren't for Erk, Sain is easily my next favorite and its his confidence and flirty attitude that helped me smile during sadder times and helped me build my own confidence (well, the whole flirt archetype has with Inigo and Sylvain being closer to me nowadays, but Sain will always be my first)
Thank you for highlighting how as simple minded as this flirt may be, he is more than meets the eye and it really shows that with the limits of the GBA, even characters like him were able to grow with what he had. Sain has always been my favorite Cavalier, and in my top 5 FE characters overall. Seeing this video helped shine new light on Sain's supports that I never processed before, even though I've seen them all before. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this beautiful break down of someone who I hold dear, and made them even more beloved in my heart. Thank you.

Aaah yes Blazing Sword, it's been a long time since I seen anything from that GOAT game! Sain is 1 of my favorites & easily top 3 of the womanizer archetype. A good boy & a true bro, I loved his relationship with Lyn the most.

So happy to see a support science on my favorite cavalier in the series and one of my first favorite characters in general. Sain is proof that you dont have to be that deep to be a well beloved character.
I feel like Blazing Blade suffers from somewhat a lack of support conversations. They’re all very hard to unlock and even then very few characters have paired ending thanks to having to fit into Binding Blades preexisting lore.

I’ve always loved his character and always saw more than just a skirt chaser in him. He’s a lot deeper than people think. He’s not super deep but he’s not one note

Happy birthday! In fanfic, Sain is usually unbearable, but I love his presentation in game. He's far from an idiot, and in contrast to Saul or Sylvain, he's more of a romantic than a sleazebag. There was one fic that painted him as "in love with the idea of love", which I thought was a neat way to view him, and credibly explained why he ended up pursuing Fiora when they had no chemistry. There were a few other interesting fics that painted Sain with an edge of pathos, more akin to his Priscilla support. In any case, I'm glad to see you defend him against the crowd who figure Sain just exists to harass women. He's way better than that.
It's adorable how he and Kent both fill in for each other's weaknesses, Kent is serious and grounded, but a bit naive and sort of a busybody. Sain is light-hearted and a bit of an airhead, but he's better at rolling with the waves and is friendly and sweet-natured. They fit together like a self-sustaining system. Imo it's no wonder they eventually became the two highest ranking knights in Caelin.
Damn, the support science series strikes again! Its these ones I don't expect that are the best imo. People that I've never really read supports for before, like Zihark, Sain, Forde and Renault make great videos. I think it's funny bc I've only read the crappy supports brought up in this video, being Sera and Louise. I had no idea his support with Kent was so good! Those two should've had a paired ending like Kyle and Forde in fe8. And the Priscilla one was really good too!

Sain is one of my best units atm in FE7
I've always had a soft spot for the red and green knights in FE, but Kent and Sain are definitely my favourite. And their supports are wholesome and heartwarming and show a side of them that you usually don't get to see very often in their other supports (Kent being a bit awkward and love-sick and Sain being a true bro and wingman).
I really hope FE7 gets a remake some day and their characters get expanded some more. :D

To quote Mantis from Guardians of the Galaxy 3: "He's the only one of you who doesn't hate himself." Everyone else is worried about the end of the world, or finding a loved one, or cursing their own uselessness. Meanwhile, Sain is living his best life serving Lyn and working with his best friend Kent.

Sain is the best, glad that your out here putting respect on his name.
there's other subtle things I notice about Sain, like how he's the one who correctly identifies who is sending people to kill Lyn, how he only has one conversation with Florina, but he consistently looks out for her wellbeing, and he's glad to see her grow more assertive,
and I actually like his supports with Serra. A bunch of Serra's support partners are just mean to her. Sain actually enjoys her company.
Makes it more glaring when Serra does Sain dirty. And not in any way Sain could want. I do suppose Serra found Sain to be low value, but gosh, couldn't she have tried?
Great vid. Your analysis is spot on as usual. That said, I'd like to defend the Rebecca and Fiora endings.
For Rebecca, it's a matter of personality. She is a playable version of the archetypal giggling village girl. She has been shown to fawn over hot guys (Raven) and knights (Lowen) Sain is both of those things. So after the journey is over and his liege decides to bail, Sain decides "You know what, I think I will go be with Rebecca." With Rebecca's personality, I think Sain could just show up and she would be sold.
As for Fiora, honestly I think this was done solely so that Kent and Sain can stay bros via the Kent/Farina ending. You can even throw some headcanon in there and say that Kent and Sain helped to reform Illia's Men's Knight Brigade so that it wasn't so terrible.
Although, if I can go on a tangent, they really should have rounded out the group with a Sain/Farina support. Sain's flirting combined with Farina's latent girl power persona could have made for a fun dynamic that keeps the bros together while preserving the wholesome goodness that is Kent/Fiora.
I like the dynamic between Sain and Fiora. It's comparable to Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade. The brash, cocky fighter and the trained professional.
@@joshuagabrielcatindig7607 I love Johnny Cage "I'm taking YOU down, I'm taking YOU down, I'm taking YOU out, I'm taking YOU out, and I'm taking YOU out...to dinner." Those were the first words Johnny said to Sonya in MK 9, and the fact that they got married after that make me as happy as can be.
But I digress, I like that comparison. Their supports definitely leave something to be desired, but I've always felt that making the relationship dynamics believable was more important than supports when it comes to fe ships. And with an overtly flirtatious character like Sain, making the dynamic believable is incredibly easy.
@@derrickmarsh6136 the supports were it's in it's infancy as a concept, and thus resulted to this. But hey, they built the foundation for the modern ones.
As for your comment, yeah, thanks for agreeing. I always found them a better pair than Sain's other pairing. I do agree with the man when he said no Priscilla ending is a crime. Isadora though is something I never saw coming.
If Elibe ever gets a remake, they need to standardize support growths. Make the speed universal across characters. It would help people like Serra a lot. (She gains only +1 for every turn, and C rank needs 80 pts. Only with Sain here she gains +2 per turn. Sain and Isadora is also a hard pair to support due to also them gaining +1 per turn only.)
I never thought sain was going to be in support science. This is going to good.
I really love Sain. Like you, I initially liked him because of his more offensive/glass cannon stats. Honestly, while his character is on the surface is pretty shallow, I never minded it. I think, in high school and early on in college, I though him a kindred spirit. A hopeless romantic chasing the ideal of love, but paradoxically afraid of commitment.
As I got older and matured, I appreciated his loyalty to Kent, his best friend, which mirrors my own to the few friends I have.
His nerding out a bit about the logistics of an interhouse tournament is my favorite Sain moment. I think that's the one moment he gets that shows he's not a knight just for show or to cast a gallant silhouette; he takes his position seriously.
His A support with Priscilla, and the bright demeanor it highlights in general, always makes me think of the song "Smile" by Lonestar:
"I'm gonna smile, because I want to make you happy
Laugh, so you won't see me cry
I'm gonna let you go in style
And even if it kills me... I'm gonna smile"

When I played Blazing Sword, I remember getting very attached to Sain, as a funny character as well as one of my best unit (I 1v1'ed the final boss with him and some healing support)
I think he IS an enjoyable character, even though he isn't as fleshed as others

How did I miss this video when it came out? I'm glad I'm not alone in loving the seemingly shallow flirts. I have such a soft spot for the smiling smooth talkers like Sain, Inigo, and Sylvain. All my favorites of their respective games. Sylvain especially stole the spotlight in 3H. He blew out the competition for best character in that game to me- and there was a lot of competition for that spot amongst 3H characters. These 3 boys all have such big hearts and want to fool everyone into thinking otherwise on first impression. So weak to them. I played FE games all out of order. I played FE7 after 3H and Awakening. When Sain showed up I immediately knew I was doomed to adore him based on my past experiences with the flirty ones. Good video anaylsis.

It's been like 20 years and child me is still upset Sain and Florina didn't get a support chain.
That dynamic would have been comedy gold but also possibly a good character study for both.
