I've had lots of comments from people telling me that English is not a romance language and they are absolutely right, I mis-spoke. English is definitely a Germanic language by origin but it contains many Latin influences largely thanks to the Norman invasion. It also has plenty Greek, French, Scandinavian roots and other influences. The point I was trying to get across is that an understanding of Latin will greatly help you to understand the English language and its etymological roots. Hopefully that clears things up XD
I was actually about to see if someone had said something about it, or just say something about it myself. Yeah, english might not be a romance language but of all of the germanic languages english is the most romanized one, about half of its vocabulary comes from either latin or french (or just from latin, considering french is a romance language).
Gregory Myles Englis actually is majority Germanic/Romantic, it has more Latin dragon than all others except German, at least according to my studies of both languiges.
Saluto! I can’t thank you enough for teaching me Latin. I have been wanting to learn Latin for more than 50 years ever since it was dropped from the curriculum at my Roman Catholic school when I was 6 years old. I enjoy your relaxed teaching methods and I’m hugely impressed by your great wisdom and academia. Thank you!
I recommend listening to Greg Myles' excellent series of tutorials, together with the Open University 'Openlearn' Latin courses (there are three of these and they are free on the Open University web site) as the perfect springboard to learning Latin.
I've decided to learn Latin as I attend a Tridentine Latin Mass and the Mass is obviously in Latin. Rather than just memorizing the creeds and service I thought it would be a good opportunity to understand it. Most Gregorian chant is Latin. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Dude, after so many websites, books and video series, you remain the best teacher in terms of both pronounciation, simplicity, talent, and pronounciation^^
I am 41 and have just started doing Latin A level. I got grade B in Latin GCSE when i was 16. I have the dummies book which is a useful and witty intro to this dead language.
+Spurr Latin heavily influenced English. English was first written down and systmatised by latin scribes. Latin was the lingua franca in the church and in the courts. latin was taught in ealry niversiies of britain. it has a huge influence on English and French from which English has borrowed excessively is a direct descendant of Latin
I want to learn more Latin because in my field I am commonly using botanical names for things which are usually Latin. Also, because I have Latin heritage and I find interest in the historical value of knowing Latin. Thanks for making this video series! I look forward to watching it all and hopefully remembering at least some. Best of luck to you in your medical studies.
Thank you! You are kind and generous. I am trying to teach my daughter Latin, which is difficult when I don't know it myself. Well, now I am on my way. Thank you! God bless you!
Thanks for the video. Subscribed. I took Latin in high school eons ago. That really helped my vocabulary throughout the years. Now I am ready to learn more.
Great video, just one minor thing though that I'm sure has already been pointed out. English is a Germanic language, although we do have a lot of Latin in modern English from the French language post the Norman Invasion and conquest of 1066. And also a lot of medical terms in modern English are directly from Latin and Greek as we had no word to use in English. Generally speaking, if modern English has no word for something, like telephone for example, we use Latin and Greek words. Telephone is Greek BTW. Interesting fact - the word Television is both Latin and Greek. Tele is Greek loosely meaning 'distant' or 'from afar'. And Vision is Latin roughly meaning 'to see'. Put them together - Television, meaning 'to see from a distance'. :)
Troy Nguyen Well, they didn't, like, create the culture, diplomacy and a large part of science and education as we know it today. Oh, wait, they totally did. Ever heard of the Renaissance?
Learning what’s underneath your daily unconscious actions is one of the coolest things ever. In this case my unconscious action is English and seeing Latin is like the foundation in a way.
thanks. You get on with it (you are not American obviously). So, Mr Scotland, I learn for fun but do revise medical stuff from two courses in different types of massage. And yes, we had to learn all about the body. I have been qualified for many years. Now as I constantly revise, with a bit of Latin it becomes clear.
I have always wanted to learn even in High School, but no one was ever interested in working with me. So I decided at 32, let's do it! The passion and thirst for knowledge/root words is still strong with me. This is so nice and kind of you to do!
What's so cool is that in German kaiser is emperor and in Latin it is Caesar (Pronounced Kaiser) is and Julius Caesars (In Latin pronounced Yulius Kaiser) name was Emperor Francis
ok men, you are doin a good job teaching latin here BUT....Make no mistake. France Italy Spain Portugal and Romania speaks romantic lenguajes, BUT English is not a romantic lenguaje. It just have influce from it, and this is becouse in the middle ages many books were translated from latin to english by monks.
I’m learning Latin because I already speak a Latin based language. I want to be able to read the history of my ancestors in the ancient tongue they used. Besides in theory by learning Latin it would be easier for me to learn other Latin based language. I speak fluent Spanish and some Italian. I can understand basic Latin and basic Portuguese.
Hey, I used to be great at reading Latin back in high school, in fact for Latin 2 I was in an alternative school learning it by myself, what classic literature (primarily focusing on war and military) would you recamend to someone who has forgotten slot of what they knew, get back into it?
+Gregory Myles This is wonderful! I know a little Latin and Greek by reason of prior studies at university. I am here to thank you for this, also ... I used to have a parakeet that looked just like yours !!! I taught him to speak many things when he was young and when he grew older, he could repeat verbatim newscasts as they were being reported. Was wondering if you teach him Latin? LOL! Maybe no time for this ... or maybe he is like mine was ... well-trained and simply learns by hearing now?!! God bless you! 🐦〰〰
I want to learn this language because I love paranormal stuff so much and I come across with this language soo many times in movies, books, games etc. Is that true. I love supernatural and I really want to learn another language.
3:03 No, English developed from the West Germanic dialects brought by the Anglos, Saxons, and Jutes. It added a lot of Latin-derived vocabulary later on, but it didn't develop from Latin, which is why it's not considered a Romance language.
I'm learning it because I speak fluent English, Studied French for at least 3 years and I want to try something new. Also I'm very interested in origins of words
I hope these videos are good for learning Latin, as Duolingo hasn't done it yet and I can't find any good free apps! I have to study Spanish for my major but I really got into it and linguistics after being recommended Duolingo, and have since taken on Portuguese and brushes with Italian and French, but also Dutch as a non-Romance language. One day I got the idea, why not try the ULTIMATE Romance language, the one that spawned them all, Latin! So I don't have many free options to do so, but I as an ethnic Italian am very proud of the Roman Republic/Empire and my ancestors lived in the part of Italy that bordered Latium, where the language and Rome began. One major problem with your map though is the implication that English is a Romance language, which it is NOT. It is Germanic with heavy Romance influence. Languages are classified by grammatical structure and I'm sure as you found in your study of Latin, its grammar is different than English which follows the Germanic style. BUT at least 75% of English's vocabulary stems directly from French due to the Norman Conquest, so it's easy to confuse it as a Romance language!
Latin also makes you more intelligent because there is more mental effort to parsing the structure of the language, with its suffix based "nodal" flexibility. It exercises the brain more than the linear dependent structure of English.
I'm learning latin because my school requires it and for my grade I have to catch up on two years of Latin learning and I gave up hope but I think with these videos I can do this 🤞🤞
I do indeed :P It is actually a medieval carol which Steeleye Span famously recorded a version of in the 70s. I like it but it is a little grating to hear the heavily anglicised pronunciation... How do you NOT know of the Indo-European language families? Look it up, it'll show you a nice graph of Western language evolution, but also how we have a similar cultural ancestor as the Iranians and people of the Indus valley (Northern India). In the prewar era before everyone got butthurt over Nazi Germany, the subject and study of what we call "Indo-Europeans", was called "Aryanism". A study which went into the cultural, genetic and linguistic root of ALL Caucasoid peoples. Very interesting stuff, it will give you a true understanding of the West, and in some cases, the East as well.
Wow, 4 years. You did great. I can tell it impressed you. You have to read this, and this. can't wait. Lets get rolling. Thanks. I hope you have more than an introduction. I'm really tired if studying Marx that's for sure. I still don't understand why people are so impressed with guy. No respect, Natural order. Marx is a bully. This will be a nice breather. RIGHT on.
english is a germanic language… not romantic… It has latin roots no doubt, but only to the extent that german was influenced by latin. regardless, THANK YOU FOR THIS!!.
Latin is very difficult to learn, especially if you don't already know a Romance language (Spanish for me) to give you a head start. If you want to learn it, you're gonna have your work cut out for you, but the payoff is definitely rewarding.
Religion, particularly Christian Religion, is also a good reason to learn Latin. Some of the ways that the Hebrew and Greek texts were rendered into Latin by St. Jerome give clues to the understood meaning of the text in the early centuries of the Church.
As a Spanish speaker, I feel the moral obligation to learn Latin, because you know, it was a language spoken (maybe) by my ancestors (and it will be easier for me XD)
I'm from Dundee originally and living in Edinburgh at the moment so there is definitely a Scottish basis to my accent. It's surprising how many people (even those from Ireland) think that I sound Irish too. Not sure where you're getting Manchester from but I do have a strange blend of British accents XD
i'm learning it cos why not
Same!
Lol. same
+Anthony Burgess SAMEEEEE~
+Anthony Burgess lol same

I'm learning Latin so that my Centurion stops hitting me when I misunderstand the commands during Roman reenactments.

Indeed, would even say that English is a hybrid language due to extremly large amount of vocabulary loaned from French and Latin
Ok, let's just pretend the commentor actually said Australia rather than America, would that be better?
Gregory Myles good job!
Gregory Myles Englis actually is majority Germanic/Romantic, it has more Latin dragon than all others except German, at least according to my studies of both languiges.
Don't wanna sound weird but your voice relaxes me
Right?!? Lol🤭 same

That bird on your shoulder is the most adorable thing ever
Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your knowledge with the rest of the world. You are truly gifted in teaching. Thanks again, mm
English did NOT come directly from Latin. English came from the Anglo Germanic languages MIXED with the Romance Language French
yes but do you expect the truth from a dago loving dork?
+TheLivithian Old English was written in runes, and later adopted the Latin alphabet when Christian missionaries came along with their scripts

Learning what’s underneath your daily unconscious actions is one of the coolest things ever. In this case my unconscious action is English and seeing Latin is like the foundation in a way.

Thank you for this and all the others, sir.
Awesome. I see it is from seven years ago. I hope I’m about to discover a crapload more videos.

The Anglo-Saxons conquered the Roman province of Britannia and displaced both Latin and the Celtic languages spoken there.
I wonder if there is any connection between the origin of candidate and candid as it's used in English...
I'm learning Latin because I heard it in For Honor and I think it's cool.

can you help with Latin if I have any questions?
So interesting you are.
I am learning Spanish(we have family in Spain) it was suggested I should learn Latin to give me a base to begin with.

Awesome :) Which university are you at?
Gregory, do you what the song Gaudete means by Steelyspan?
I do indeed :P It is actually a medieval carol which Steeleye Span famously recorded a version of in the 70s. I like it but it is a little grating to hear the heavily anglicised pronunciation... "Gaow-Day-Taaaay"
If you'd like to listen to another modern(ish) song in Latin then I'd recommend "O Caritas" by Cat Stevens
What to you does my constructed phrase 'Meta fortis' mean to you?
Hey do you have a lesson 4, if so where can i find it?

Interesting I never looked at romantic as Roman. Is a tic a parasite in Latin?
The principia mathmatica was written By Betrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead, not Newton
Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica was what I was referring to, but you're quite right :p
Gregory Myles gotcha! Didnt hear that
Do you reccomend any resources?
So Spanish, French, Italian Derive from Latin.

Is there any other Family of languages?
Yes there's loads of language families, I'm sure you can find the language trees for English, German etc and Chinese, Japanese etc
Diego Moreno which*

I totally dig the parakeet!!!
I'm learning Latin because my great grandmother used to speak it. :)

There's a quirky irony in listing astronomy, botany, etymology, biology, etc. considering that the names of those fields are all derived from Greek :P
I want to learn this because it is a less flexible language and used in medical text book
I'm learning Latin because I'm a greekoligist extreme egyptologist and working towards becoming romanologist
Just out of curiosity, do I hear tints of Irish, Scottish, and Manchester in your accent?
I'm from Dundee originally and living in Edinburgh at the moment so there is definitely a Scottish basis to my accent.
