The Colt Defender has been my EDC for years, now that my eyes are no longer young I have chosen and trained with
a laser site option as well. I have carried a 1911 of one configuration or other for 50 years. In that time I have tried many of the "best" EDC" guns that have come along in those years. I always return to the 1911 usually a Colt. Is it the best? I don't know. Is it for me? YES...

I picked one up 4yrs ago and like your it only came with one mag. But upgraded it with Trijicon night sights, a metal main spring housing and spring kit and hammer from EGW. and 3 more magazines. It shoots FMJ and JHP with no problems. Also added a set of Hogue rubberized finger grips to handle the recoil. Enjoyed your videos

I'v always been skiddish of the 3" guns myself but man that one seems to be a winner. I wish nothing but the best for Colt really. I just found one of the AR15-A4 marked 20" rifles and it is a sweetheart.......crazy accurate. Whats funny is it's more accurate than my purpose built SPR LOL......but I'm not complaining for sure. I've been looking for a Colt CC 4.25 or LW commander for a while now but that little officers model is looking pretty good too!

My family gifted me a Colt Defender 45 2 yrs ago for my birthday. Outstanding accuracy and surprisingly light recoil. Currently my EDC. I rotate my EDCs. The only problem was with reassembly. I fought for 45 minutes to get the recoil assembly and gave up. Replaced it with a Kimber recoil assembly. A bit difficult but waaay much but better.

I like my Defenders. Have 3 of them. 2 new production, one stainless like yours and a blued one. The last one is an older series 90 stainless without the carry cut on the slide and Colt hi viz sights that are more like a tall government rear sight and the front sight is staked old style instead of cross dovetailed Novaks like most new Colts have gone to. The blued one came with 2 polished stainless Colt mags. The new stainless one came with 1 polished stainless Colt mag. The older series 90 came with 2 stainless mags that are not polished and have an orange follower.
The new stainless model went right back to Colt for another barrel as it patterned instead of grouping and was shooting several inches low at 7-10 yards. Colt put a new barrel in it fairly quickly (thank you CZ) and it now shoots pretty much like my other Defenders. 185 critical defense shoots to point of aim and groups better than I would expect out of a short sight radius 3 inch barreled 1911.

That looks like a good pistol, though I think I'd prefer the combat commander. As I watched you shooting it, I noticed the watch you are wearing and how it was affected by the recoil. It looks like a nice watch. Watches are pretty tough, but that's a lot of shock impacting some tiny delicate parts.

Your Colt Defender is far better looking than my Colt Defender purchased in 1998. At least today's Defender has Novak sights versus my 1998 Defender with standard high profile Colt sights, Hogue wrap around grips versus wood grips, and beaver tail grip safety with bump versus standard Colt grip without bump nor upswept beavertail grip. My Defender still works after all these years with only part change is the recoil guide spring with the Kimber Ultra recoil spring guide and plug which allows for easier disassembly versus the factory Colt recoil spring assembly which is flimsy....

    • @terrydepew1252
      @terrydepew1252 3 месяца назад

I have a Defender like your earlier model. It is Marked series 90 on the slide and has the same sights and grips as yours. It does not have the carry cut on the front of the slide the new Defenders have. I recently replaced the Colt down swept "duckbill" grip safety with a Colt factory matt finish stainless Defender up swept beavertail grip safety that I bought from Numrich gun parts for 31 bucks. It is the same grip safety the new production Defenders come with.
I had to use an Ed brown .250 radius beavertail grip fitting jig to file the frame tangs to fit the new grip safety. No more ugly gap between the tang and grip safety.

@@terrydepew1252 Great customization. I am still slightly angry after all these year when Colt advertised the Defender in 1998, the firearm pictured had Novak sights and a upswept Beaver tail grip in G&A magazine. Yet, due to employee disputes and financial difficulties the shooting public was issued the Colt I ended up purchasing. Still the gun came with two magazines with orange PVC coated followers which was "NOT" common due to most Colts had shipped with only "ONE" magazine....Kudos for that!

@@michaelbarfield9406 Numrich Gun Parts has Colt Defender slide assemblies for $323.70. Their picture shows the modern slide with Novak sights front and rear as well as the carry cut on the front of the slide. It is listed at the top of the parts list as "not illustrated" and when opened shows 4 items. That slide is tempting but my older series 90 shoots so well I will probably leave it the way it is for now.
One other part listed with the slide is the complete recoil assembly that unfortunately lists as out of stock. Numrich also lists all the recoil parts separately elsewhere but they are also out of stock. I will need fresh recoil springs some day. I guess we can use the recoil assembly from Kimber for 70 + dollars. Also Armscor the company that makes Rock Island Arsenal guns in the Philippines makes 3" and 3 1/2" 1911"s and lots of parts like springs and such. I wish Colt would make these consumable parts available. That would sure make maintaining these guns easier.

Great video, totally enjoyed it! After admiring and researching sub compact 1911's for CCW, I am getting very close to purchasing a Colt Defender .45 ACP, blued version for deep concealment application's. My question, maybe you can help me with, is about ammo. Is it better, in terms of reliability, to use 185 grain ammo in place of 230 grain due to the shorter slide / recoil spring / barrel? I was told the lighter ammo functions better in the sub compact 1911's. I run 230 grain ammo in my Government and Commander size models with no issues but I'm not sure about the sub compact model...Take care and stay safe my friend!

I have 3 Defenders. One old series 90 stainless and 2 new production series 80 Defenders, one blue the other stainless. The stainless gun is the last one I bought. When it was new it went back to Colt as it shot 4 inches low of point of aim at 7 yards and patterned rather than shooting a nice group like the blue Defender shot. I sent the gun with my target and a brief note explaining the problem and Colt put a new barrel in the gun fairly quickly. It looks like CZ is improving Colt. That is a good thing.
All 3 Defenders run well now with Hornady critical defense 185 ammo. I think that load is running near 1050 fps. These guns shoot that load pretty much to point of aim at 20-30 feet. Since covid I have noticed variations in different lots of Hornady critical defense ammo like small primers instead of large, brass cases instead of nickel and earlier lots were hotter over the chrono. Like well over 1100 fps. I did run some old Remington 185 +P and some old Corbon 185 I had left over from the 90's thru the blue one when new but critical defense shoots point of aim, runs, is made for short barreled guns and is on every gun store shelf so I stopped looking for a different carry load. Hope this helps. Terry

The Combat Elite Defender has a stainless steel frame unlike the regular Defender in the video with an aluminum frame. I don't know if the Combat Elite Defender has a polymer main spring housing like the regular Defenders but if I had to guess knowing Colt, they probably do. I like the polymer on my 3 Defenders as it is lighter than steel. I like less weight for carry.
Now on my 90's vintage all stainless Officers ACP I just replaced the polymer MSH with a stainless one from Wilson along with a Wilson upswept beavertail grip safety. Some fitting was needed as is the case with most Wilson quality parts. I would rather have to fit parts to a close fit rather than having them drop in and have gaps or be sloppy.
