This is often overlooked, thanks for this! I often struggle with spacing so I tend to make my logos either a circle or a box but now I will try more dynamic shapes
You can draw square on where your take your measurement, and then you can simply put two corners like left up and right down. Then shift+o for canvas tool to resize it to corners of squares.
Thank you very much for this tutorial. Straightforward, and just the right amount of information needed. Also great to have a technique that works visually, and that is adapted to the logo, instead of generic mathematical rules that sometimes just don't work. Thank you very much for this.
I don't speak for Will here, but I will say that to me, the reason the N was chosen is because it is the letter with the most mass and straightest edges. It's a pretty good spacer and doesn't impede upon other characters; whereas the only other 'very vertical' letter would be the "I". But the "I" would be better for word/character spacing because of its natural narrow width.
Hey Will, I truly enjoy watching your videos, you are awesome graphic designer, I've been learning a lot with you. So I'd like to ask you to make a video giving some tips for Illustrator when designing a logo. I don't use Illustrator that much but I'd like to learn more. Would you make that video? Cheers from Brazil!
Are you keeping a transparent box around the logo? Without this, when exporting just the artwork on art board, it doesn’t account for the created clear space. It extracts the asset without clear space, unless the clear space was created as a clipping mask or transparent box, behind the primary asset (logo).
adding to adobe libraries is rough even with the export it will bound to the outer points of the logo. but if you add an invisible box to the artboard and then export it, you can add to a library and it will keep the clear space
CARROT. Hey just came across your video (7/20/24) and I was wondering is the Brand Guidelines Template Vol.2 out yet and is that one available for Adobe Illustrator? Or would I need to purchase Vol. 1 then upgrade to Vol.2?
Yes! So sorry. Update is taking some time to iron out. I don't want to release it until it's ready. You can be sure to hear back from me very soon when it is!
The presented way of thinking about "clearspace" of a logo, holds also true of single letters: the spacing/kerning of a single letter must be in balance with its own area of form and counterform. - Example: the show "JANI" logo. In my opinion, it is set too compress. The space *between* the letters is narrower than the space *in* the letters. Not a good way of doing it, if you aks me. 🤔
@willpatersondesign hi Will i really apreciate ur video.Look i have to make a branding book for a company i came up with the template vol 1 you are referring to and i think it would be great help Can i please confirm it s only volume 1 and NOT that with volume 1 i can do nothing and i have to spend other 14,99 $ x10 to get the whole pack? Thanks for the Video. why don't I get the bounding box 3:00 when I import the SVG to inDesign 😭 the box is just the shape of the logo. does it only appear if I import it to Figma?

That’s a great reminder, Will. You have a habit of telling a story right when I happen to need it. How do you know?😬
I learn more from your videos than I learn at uni.
🥕 Super helpful, thanks! Can you explain why the "N' was the "leading shape" in the JANI logo?
🥕 I was wondering the same thing, not sure how you determine your 'leading' shape?

Is leading shape generally used here meaning the most important or is it something different in logo design? Could anyone help, I am a beginner. :)
Use the shape or component that stands out the most - or is of most importance to the logo.

can you review the philippines Logo PAGCOR worth 3M peso or 54,810 USD, can you see if it is worth it?
What if the logo is a mascot?
Not sure which software to learn, Photoshop, Illustrator, Fr, After effect. Do you have advice on that?
It depends on what you want to learn. Graphic Design, or Motion Design?
carrot😄. Thank you
You're welcome 😊
carrot. amazing content. can the brand guideline template also come in Adobe Illustrator template file?
Not as of now! It works by using components which Illustrator doesn't feature. Figma is free though. :)
