Hi good video. I Bought mine in 1988 but it came out March 2, 1987. I paid $369 for mine, with 50mm 1.8 lens. The 650 inherited it's shape from the T90 which was released in 1986, the year before the 650 came out. It is 35 years old this year, this past march. I still have mine. I made money with it for years, you would never know by looking at it today that is 35 years old, it still works great, thing is build like a tank. I remember one guy in a magazine saying he was so upset that canon changed the lens mount, that he was gonna leave them high and dry like they left him. Canon did take some heat for that one, but it worked out in the long run. Thanks again for the video.
When you loaded the film, the camera was flashing “ISO 400” to warn you that it did not read the DX code. ISO 400 was the last ISO loaded, and the flashing means it wants you to set the ISO manually.
The EOS 650was priced at 370 USD in June of 1987, as I am writing this in July 2023, the price including inflation would be nearly 1000USD. In my view, the EOS 650/600 family with the base undercut are the most beautiful cameras of the era. To this day all copies that I have work reliably and take great pictures.
I did not realize this until a couple years ago that Canon was the brand with the most SLRs sold. I think Canon effectively sold to both consumer and pros. At least from my point of view I thought Nikon would be. It was promoted as a professional camera and a lot of the photographers whose photos showed up in photo magazine were using Nikons. But you are definitely right. Canon was a quality camera both optically and mechanically. I’m tempted to look for some lenses for them if I can find them at a bargain price.
@@m005kennedy I picked EOS 650 with 28-70 3.5-4.5 II. I can say that the lens is great if you need cheap, but quality zoom. Should be looked at private sales, because otherwise it cost 100, on older camera 20$. I have also EF 28mm 2.8 it is also Okey and with luck can be found for 70 euros or usd. I bought one month ago for 70. I've heard good stuff about EF 135 2.8(with soft focus) . But I haven't tried it yet. They are all dirt cheap.
Thanks for the video a friend of mine who's suffering from cancer was going to have a surgery and he thought he was not going to make it so he was giving away all his old items and he gave me a basket of those old camera probably 10 of it I love to take pics myself, I was wondering what kind of battery should I buy so I can give it a try?
@@JoeBidenseliye Hi Judy can I have one for the camera cause I really wanted to have a camera but I don't have money to buy And I wanted to be a photo journalism
Hello, I have just bought this camera and paired it with the 50mm f1.8 STM Lens. I am getting a BC error. I put another zoom lens on and got the same thing? Any advice would be hugely appreciated.
The manual says if the bc error continues after installing a new battery the camera needs repair. There are many people asking this question ten years ago. It also seems to happen if the camera doesn't recognize the lens.
Never really understood the controversy in leaving behind the FD mount. If I want to buy an autofocus camera, then I want the ability to autofocus, no? Surely people knew back then you couldn't retrofit manual lenses to AF. The way Nikon and Pentax carried their mounts over, having so many minor variations makes it annoying to find which lens is fully compatible based on the body.
I read that changing the lens mount by Canon was considered courageous by some and a betrayal by others. In retrospect, it could have been possible for part of the new models to have a removable mounting plate like one of the Miranda cameras had. And today, going to a mirrorless camera that's too thin for DSLR lenses. Perhaps the things I suggested would have made the cameras too expensive and clunky. Plus----and a big plus, photographers like to buy lenses. They like to buy more technological advanced cameras and lenses. At this point it makes a lot of great cameras and lenses available for people like me that have a very tight budget.
I just bought this camera from a thrift store. same lens and all. the camera doesnt seem to shoot when the lens is on. also it wont change from the "m.focus" mode. and suggestions?
Mike, you spent the first five minutes talking about Nikon history and yard sales I bailed at that point to find a review of the 650 with some info on it :P
Hope you found something you liked. I believed the comparison of the lens mounts was an important part of Canon history. This camera was aimed at the pro market so what Nikon did with their mounts was important of photographers decision to buy this or Nikon.
@@m005kennedy Excuse my bad mood last night. I had just bought a used 650 for a friend, she wants to try out film. I was looking for a _How To_ video for Canon 650 ( that's what category your video is in). I do agree, that Canon's decision to drop FD and Nikon sticking with the same mount (until last year for mirrorless) was pivotal. Also the 650 was the new baby at the birth of EF

@@m005kennedy Yes, the lenses work on 5D mk1. The body was bought without a lens :( I thought maybe it's a known issue. The problem is that Canon service center in my town doesn't want to deal with it as it's very old and they don't have spare parts.
I understand now. I think you got a body that doesn’t work correctly. The good or bad thing about older equipment is while it usually can’t be repaired economically, you can replace it at a cost much less that the repair. The only thing I could suggest is cleaning the contacts on the camera body that interface with the lens.
I’m a little confused about this issue. I did some research that say it will but mine won’t. It appears the EF lenses from the film camera will work on the digital, but the digital lenses won’t work on the film camera, the will not fit.
ArachnoKeem PH I’ll do some more checking. I tried swapping the lens from the 650 to the Rebel EOS XT body, it fit. I could not mount the lens from the Digital Rebel to the 650 film camera.
@@m005kennedy that's because the lens that the Rebel is using is an EF-S mount, aka crop body lens. You can put full frame lenses to crop bodies but you either cant put crop body lens(EF-S) to ff bodies(EF) (Canon's case), or you'll get horrible vignettes in your images due to how crop body lenses are made to expose an APSC sized sensor (Nikon's case). Hope this helps clarify things

If anyone was still looking the price of this camera when it first released would of been around 2,200 CAD or 1700 USD.
Amazing! It was the top of the line and it firmly established Canon as the top seller if SLRs. Even above Nikon!
