Tested with a 5* +3 +def -spd Roy against enemies in the 706 arena score range.
Young Tiki was the only dragon I failed to find in arena.
With the prevalance of dragon emblem in today's meta, Roy's refined Binding Blade is an incredible upgrade for him. He is now the ultimate enemy phase dragon slayer.
He ain't too shabby against non dragons either.
(And yes bonfire is much better than iceberg for this build. I know. Mistakes were made alright. :x )

That's true, if you're facing one. Roy is now about baiting dragons in enemy phase to get them at their weakest point where most of their skills don't matter, at the cost of having the same player phase problems as them

Most dragons are built for enemy phase, I'm glad that people are actually using other builds besides Steady Breath, QR, Aether, with Lightning Breath+ and then copy and paste it onto 3 other units. Roy can counter that build easily, F!Corrin (I forgot about her) and F!Grima can easily counter Roy with Windsweep due to his slow speed. He isn't the best (Alm is way better) but he still counters that obnoxious build. Dark Breath was always underrated imo

-Spd +def isn't his best IV for killing dragons anyway
I had a +Atk -Spd 5* Roy, but I sacrificed him a while ago. I'm still kicking myself.
Dont feel bad I was aiming for a +10 Roy and now gotta lose 4 or 5 extra Roys i've invested into the one I kept. Oh well!
A 5* Roy was my first ever unit I pulled in the game, so I wanted to test if his upgrade made him any good. Turns out it makes him absolutely incredible.
Mine is +Atk -Res, QR Binding Blade, Repo, Sol (to sustain self), Close Def, Swordbreaker (to also be able to tank and kill those, makes him more multipurpose than just dragons), Threaten Def, Close Def. He's been absolutely fantastic (also paired together with NY Corrin, he tanks way more than he should ever be allowed to, it's fantastic).
Warding Breath and Aether kinda seems viable on this build, now that I think about it.
The sustain would be real
Erynis Agni, way ahead of you, Roy’s only real enemy now is the occasional blue mage

Steady/Warding Breath and Aether help him with longevity, as well as to stay in the Guard/QR range. The Luna portion of it also helps his somewhat paltry Atk stat. Atk Smoke is also a good option for his C slot.
My plus 4 Roy is S support with Aether, Distant Counter, Guard 3 and Panic Ploy. His IVs are +spd -hp and goddamn he's insane. The seal is cc3 aswell.

steve alvarez ocampo Binding Blade purpose is to follow it's user's desire so, if Roy barely met his mother, he wont kill her, just, make her fall unconsious just like original Binding Blade game with Idun

thanks for showing how amazing he is! mine is +4 at the moment (going full +10 on him, got the 4* to do so) and, +atk/-spd and has Steady breath/Guard with close def seal, also works great.
If only IS would release Adamant/Stalwart Blade (Def/Res version of Heavy/Flashing Blade)

That would be Powerful on any Enemy phase build
Instead of both slots being CD, give him Brazen Def/Res then CD. Instead of +16, he has +17 defense, mix that with a -Def, +Atk Ignis build and you have a 25+17 in both Def and Res, with QR and a +7 bonus even in player phase for taking out a pesky high defense ranged unit like summer Corrin with Ignis proc.
I'm running summoner supported Roy with steady breath, close defense. Ally supported with Lilina w/ spur defense giving him a total of 20 extra defense, including fortify def, and a total of 51 defense on enemy phase, and sword breaker, for pesky sword users
What you should do is ship him with Marth. Adding 4 to everything plus whatever other buffs you have. This way Marth can basically make up for the stats Roy lacks and add res and def as icing on the cake.
I’m actually gonna +10 a Roy I feel like he’ll be amazing, my set for him will be Binding Blade Refined, Reposition, Ignis, Steady Breath, Renewal, Atk Tactic and Close Def Seal with +Def -HP IVs . With this he’ll get turn one Ignis and heal his HP back up with Renewal so he stays healthy and in QR range.
He’s definitely a great candidate now.

What s good is that most of the dragons are build as enemy phase units so the fact that u just let them attack u instead makes it easy to kill them

Can someone explain to me how Regnal Astra hits for zero? I thought it scales off Ayra's spd and doesn't care for anybody's def or res
If you swap close def for steady breath with Ignis he wins way more matchups, even beating every single dragon WITHOUT the effective against dragons buff. I tested it in a matchup calculator already, and enemy phase against all range 1 units resulted in 119 wins, 0 losses, 13 draws. Only 1 unfavorable. Waiting for my +def/-spd to build mine, but you all might try out the build!

maybe instead of iceberg or bonfire, he could use a healing special. and in case you dont want to heal him, maybe instead its better to have brazen def/res for a skill. probably there wasnt the ghb for it when this appeared, but yeah...
What about Warding Breath as an A skill? It may be +2 damage taken (which can be negated with Res Tactic, except that you will take more damage from melee enemies since you don't have additional 6 Def), but you can charge Special drastically faster on Enemy Phase, allowing you to use Ignis/Glacies or even Aether for HP recovery.
Definitely a good choice. It’s just up to personal preference(and availability) on what to pick between close defense, steady breath, warding breath, and distant counter
It may be faster for that, but you do lose out on the bulk against both melee magic units and melee physical units

Derp, I use litteraly the same build exept I switched close def for steady breath and used ignis instead of glacies. I also used atk smoke 3 for his c slot to help him tank

I prefer my roy with a spd boon and res bane ( still looking for hp bane). Close def is definitly the best seal. I run fury on A since roy benefits from everything very well especially his atk, and he reaches respectable spd with fury. For B slot I take renewal to stay in QR range and on C i use threaten spd to avoid more doubles. Since my roy doesnt get doubled often, i cant use bonfire as effective, since it wont proc in his first combat, so I use moonbow ( which he needs against a lot of enemies to ORKO ). Your build is definitly very interesting and a lot better in enemy phase, but I prefer to have a littlebit of a playerphase. All in all Im really happy how his refine turned out. He is by far the best dragon slayer, and he can easily counter annoying wary fighter builds with QR, while keeping his B slot open.
I'm all about that vantage tbh.
My Roy has the refined Binding Blade, Extra Health (Health +5), Vantage 3, Savage Blow 3 and Consectutive Blow 3. So far no one that i have faced has been much of a threat to him and thats saying alot since i use Roy all the time

Nice build but if you want a Roy who can beat anything, give him Binding Blade w/Quick Repost, Aether, Distant Counter, Wrath, Even Def Wake, and Even Res Wave S. If you just sit him in front of anything he will get +10 Res, Def and will counter. He can beat anything and if you merge him.
I don’t have a unit for close defense on the A Skill. What can I put in its place?
Hmm, I have a +2 +Spd/-hp Roy That has 35 spd. Idk if it’s worth butchering that for 4 more def and 3 more hp.
Roy's refine is nice but if we're talking dragon checks and all Lucina is still the best all around and Alm is the best player phase. Lucina with her refine + fury 3 or close defense + close defense seal is still a better check and is more well rounded to fight other units as well. Double lion Alm just disintegrates everything. Still though Roy's not a bad option since he's 3/4 star while Alm and Lucina are both 5 star locked. Personally would much rather run the vantage build.
Roy’s not just a dragon check. He can check almost all melee units. Check the vid, he takes out blue armors too. So can you really say Lucina is a more well rounded fighter at that point?

Er I'm really confused by this build. He has slightly more defense than rez, and you use Drive Def and Defense Tactics on the team (so he'll have 10 more def than Res) so why aren't you using Bonfire over iceberg? You would end up with an extra 5 points of damage.
One more reason why I love my Windsweep female Corrin ;D

My Roy tanked a Reinhardt on enemy phase when he was on a def tile. As long as there aint to dancers giving them a second attack Roy can just tank. Now if only Roy could get Bracing Stance 2 Sacred Seal.

toan tran thien I gave him distant counter too and I think it's slightly better than steady breath. (Mostly since I use him more to tank magical hits than melee hits.)
Distant counter is not bad. He can become an all purpose magic tank. And the vantage quick riposte combo works best with DC
This is just one, and honestly in my opinion just a little bland, way to build Roy given his awesome refinement.
Roy gets +4 def/res at any range, so distant counter makes perfect sense, honestly. He plays well with Vantage, Wrath, hell, maybe even shield pulse because SP has great potential interactions with QR, etc.
His stats are somewhat a limiting factor but he's got a lot of build options thanks to his refine.
im using him with atk smoke guard Distant counter and distant defense seal... he is working out pretty good as a magic tank. i dont regret any of it.
He can even tank a B!Lyn without buffs, who mysticly has boons in every stat, and who has a Brave Bow and only take 16 damage (Both have no buffs or Debuffs) and on the player phase Roy (with the -7 atk Debuff) will deal 39 Damage, Enough to 1 Hit KO this special Lyn.
-spd to me is pretty bad bane to take i think the perfect roy is one that can avoid being doubled so i think -hp is better because his speed is still high enough to be relevant against units who have a speed of 32 - 34 with his neutral speed (BK, Sigurd, Zelgius) in theory he would be more defensive with less hp and neutral speed

FINALLY USEFUL
On my Roy I'm using distant counter, shield pulse,sacred cowl and distant def sacred seal. He tanks a Reinhardt, ORKO's him and still has enough health for quick riposte lol, demolishes any other mage.
Personally, I'm killing Hardin for that nice Brazen Res/Def. I still want to maintain some sort of player phase, so HP will be my bane.

Why Iceberg? What about Bonfire, Roy's Def is higher than his Res, Dmg on Special would be higher by one sure but it could matter a lot.

Watching this really really makes me wish IS would do a sealed sword banner an give us Gonzalez, Gerik!, an Rutger. Give Gonz the Devil Axe, Gerik a sword like Roys, and Rutger a Crit/Special cool down effect since we dont crit an proc'ing a special is about as close as we can get to a critical attack.

Dragons deal so much damage that they do not need wrath to boost their damage. Tiki would benefit much more from quick riposte in the b slot and one of the defenses(distant or close) in the seal slot

He doesn’t need it. He’s already amazing at the dragon killer role already so you can make him an all around melee tank by focusing on his defense. People seem to miss this point, even though the majority of the video is about this.

I gave my neutral roy Warding breath! tomorrow he will have his refine I am so excited! He is really good with it!! I was thinking of guard too!! Got a few minus speed titania I may raise and kill and but for now he can handle red swords with swordbreaker

I decided to use +def and this was the only def boon I had. Not that I’m conplaining. I do believe -spd is a desirable bane, though hp is probably better

To be fair most of these dragons are built to be attacked instead of being the attacker.
