The reason the children don’t remember most of what happened at Bly is because they were tucked away and not aware/in control of their bodies when some of that stuff happened so they would not be able to remember those moments. I realize that answer doesn’t cover everything, so maybe some of it was just their brain blocking the memories.
Bly is definitely underrated. Hill House and Bly are both beautiful for different reasons. I love following you guys through the Flaniverse, looking forward to Midnight Mass.
I love Bly a little bit more than I love Hill House most days. Those child actors were amazing and they had a lot to do and remember. Miles picked up Peter's mannerisms so well and Flora was center stage a lot of the time. Midnight Mass is my favorite, I'm so excited to catch up when the whole thing is out. Flora's real older sister was the main girl in The Black Phone. (Sorry I'm blanking on names right now.)
So glad to see Bly Manor be appreciated! It's such a Beautiful love story. Too many people expected another hill house so they were disappointed. Hill house was a family drama with horror. Bly manor was a Gothic romance with ghosts, with different types of love. Toxic love (peter/rebecca), forbidden love (henry/charlotte), unspoken love (hannah/owen) unrequited love (dani/eddie) possesive love (viola) and unconditional love (jamie/dani). I also think it's kind of symbolizing having a loved one with a fatal illness. Viola had a fatal illness, and Dani had a fatal illness.
I think the reason that Bly Manor is so underrated is because it was hyped as a "sequel" to Hill House. The same cast, the same music, the same premise of a haunted house with Where's Waldo ghosts in the background to spot. Being only the second Mike Flanagan series on Netflix, we didn't have a full grasp of the concept of "the Flaniverse" and what exactly ties them all together-- I think a lot of people went into it expecting it to be a lot more explicitly connected to Hill House's story and style and genre than it was, so the two series were compared a lot more one-to-one. I personally really love both series in their own unique ways, and I deeply appreciate how subtle the Flaniverse connections really are-- just in consistent themes and hints in dialogue that add that extra layer of meaning to the words.
Just wanted to say thanks for continuing on the Flanaverse! Hill House will always be my favorite for various reasons , but I love them all. Excited for Midnight Mass!
And you will! One day at a time. Hold on to the love you have within yourself and the ones you love, the fear will always be there, but the love you have it's what matters and what makes you alive
Rebecca trying to spare Flora the pain of drowning always gets me, and I just quietly sob through the rest of it knowing what’s coming. So excited for the next Flannigan series!
there's lots of parallels with dementia throughout this show, everything from hannah being scattered throughout her memories and losing track of time and space, to the ghosts losing their sense of self and Owen's mom notably dies from dementia. I think this episode really hammers it home though portraying someone with early onset dementia who's just trying to appreciate what time they have.
I think the thing with bly is there is so many ways to look at the show. Which is why its such a perfect gothic literature story. I see a lot of parallels with depression as well. Hannah being lost in her memories never moving on. And dani, fighting depression for years only to lose the battle in the end.
I have a friend who lost her mother to Alzheimer’s not long before I watched this for the first time. AllI could think of was her mom when watching this episode.
@@emilylewis5373 I can understand what you mean. But for me personally, Hill House fits this picture much better. But as you say, you can see the show in different ways..
This show was released almost a year after my wife and daughter died. I watched this with my sister in law who had been trapped at my house for lockdown and stayed because I was a mess. Hill House was the last show I watched with my wife she loved it and would have loved Bly. I cant explain how much this show helped and broke me. Watching this beautiful lesbian love story about grief, while both me and my lesbian sister in law were grieving was an experience. Re-watching it through this reaction I'm still in floods of tears, but it helps even now. While I think in future Hill House and Midnight Mass will be the the more important landmarks this show will have a special place in my heart. Thanks for the catharsis guys.
So glad to have rewatched this beautiful beautiful story with yall, and glad you loved it. Bly Manor is so underrated. I bawled at this finale. Cannot WAIT for Midnight Mass, what a masterpiece!!
What Jamie was trying to teach Flora at the end she can’t bring herself to follow. I interpreted the hand on her shoulder as Dani always being with Jamie but purposefully not showing herself because Jamie needs to move on.
This is my favourite Flanagan series. It’s what sold me on him. I loved the vibes. The softer gothic horror is uncommon these days. He doesn’t rely solely on jump-scares like many do. His feel earned when they happen. Hard to compare very different series that are all bangers. But I love this one so much.
I haven't seen anybody talk about the ending with the children remembering. Flora and Miles were not only really young, but also super traumatized and the brain does a lot to protect children during those years. They probably remember Hannah and Owen, as they had the most contact with them. Jamie, however, is said pretty early on in the show to not spend a lot of time around the house, preferring the outdoors. So they might remember that they had a gardener, but not her name or what she looks like.
Bly is definitely a love/drama story and because of it is underrated. People come expecting a horror show and is much more about the drama. I loved it. Now I am so excited for Midnight Mass cause is my favourite!
Bly Manor remains my #1 of the flannagan shows. Its not the most exciting or action/horror packed but it hit me the hardest and has stayed with me the most. Also the score and performances and the haunting beauty of the story.
Even though I knew what to expect, this episode still made me bawl. I'm so glad to see Bly be appreciated. It's my favorite of the Flanaverse shows. Looking forward to seeing your reactions to Midnight Mass!
I think a lot of folks expected Bly Manor to be more along the lines of Hill House scare wise. I think both tell great stories but one is a family drama at its core while this one is more interpersonal relationships. I found that I've appreciated this season more the older I get and experience new things that life has to offer.
Agreed!!! Spoilers could absolutely ruin it. I was so lucky that I saw it without knowing anything about it, it was an experience, it was amazing. Best show of the last decade for me easily.
I can't get over how much of a beautifully crafted story this is. It's so perfect, everything is coherent. I'm not a very big fan of tragedies, but this one is so beautiful.
As sad as the ending is,what a beautiful love story between Dani & Jamie, I get choked up every time I watch this show.😢 Side note, you are in for a real treat with Midnight Mass, another fantastically written and acted show by Flanagan.
I watched this series when I was at the worst point in my life, working a shit job and was hanging out with people who were toxic and lost a few of my old friends, was diagnosed with clinical depression and what not But this show made me tune out for a weekend and it made me get my shit together. Don’t know how or why because I’m not a crier but the ending just DEVASTATED me. ❤
Everything about this show causes me pain but something I don't see people mention is how: Rebecca, knowing she's dead and knowing she can't physically interact with the world around her to save Flora, does the one thing she can do. She takes over Flora's body so that the young girl she took care of wouldn't have to feel the physical pain and mental anguish that she herself felt when being forced by another into drowning herself. Rebecca was misled yes, but she was ultimately a kind, caring woman who chose to do what was right. (sorry thinking about her character makes me emo as hell).
you are right. Her death was unjust. Like Jamie said, the man she loved twisted her and she ended up dying because of Him. She had much more ahead of her future but because of a man, all of that was thrown away.
My best friend had just moved states before this series came out and I scared the hell out of her by sending a voice message where I was just incoherently sobbing after watching this last episode. She thought she was about to have to move back until she realized I was crying about this. 🤣
As twisted and rageful as Viola was, I kind of appreciated that she gave Dani I think 12 years with the woman that she loved. It was more than she ever got to enjoy with her husband and child. But still an awful ending for Dani.
I really like Bly Manor. Hill House is my favorite but Bly Manor has become my second the more I’ve revisited it. One reason it’s low on a lot of people’s list is because they were expecting more of a horror story like Hill House. Also, Midnight Mass and Usher are amazing and I can understand why others would prefer them. I just like Bly Manor more personally.
Aaand I'm crying again. I was hoping you'd figure it was Jamie so you'd be sobbing by the time she goes into the lake and then says "dani would never". Anyway, midnight mass, let's goooo!
Ugly crying the last 20 mins of tbh is video because I relate so much to the depression welling up in Danni. When she said I’m here, I feel you touch me, but I don’t feel it all the way. That’s it. That’s depression
This episode brings tears to my eyes every time 🥹. You guys are in for a treat with Midnight Mass!!! Doctor Sleep is another must watch by Mike Flanagan. He's just too good! 😁
Dani and Jamie were together for at least 15 years. Because the events at Bly took place in the 1980s, and Marriage equality wasn't passed in the United States until the early 2000s. Massachusetts was the first state that legalized same sex marriage until 2004. I can't make it through the last leg of the show without tearing up. I'm so glad they gave Dani and Jamie as many happy years together as they did.
Blake preferring Bly over Hill House makes a lot of sense. If we all like the same things life would be boring. I prefer hillhouse over this but that doesn't take anything away from the brilliance that this show is
I love how their "optimistic" guesses were all right. Miles is free, Rebecca and Peter fade away, Jamie and Dani end up together. BUT DESPITE ALL THAT it still hurt 😭😭😭💔
I think people went into Bly with the wrong expectations. Hill house was a very modern horror but Bly is a classic gothic horror which focus more on metathemes rather than a creepy visual or jump scare. I guess it's something you need to jump into and sink your teeth in and that is not for everyone. For me Bly is most likely my favorite Flanagan project. It hit me so hard and came out in an time where I needed to have some light and perspective in my life. 'Dead doesn't mean gone.' is probaly the line that had the most impact on my life our of any media ever. I lost someone (younger than even Flora when she says it in the show) and this show came out right when that caught up with me. It's that wisdom, that truth, spoken so clearly and simple, I cried for hours but it also helped me heal and continue. So yeah... this one might not be for everyone but it might be one of my favourite shows ever and I am ever glad it was made.
If you are wondering why the characters do not look much like those in the story in the present, it is because she did not tell in her story what they were really like. To prevent Flora from knowing it was them because they forgot everything. Only she thought they deserved to know that there was someone who saved them even if it was that way. 😢😢
All 4 Flanagan shows are brilliant in their own right. Top notch acting, directing and dialogue. Made up you guys liked this. There's more warmth in this story than Hill House and criticisms are often aimed at this one lacking the same teeth in terms of horror.
Kudos guys. This was a roller coaster of emotions for me. I remember why this episode had me sobbing like a baby. The relationship at the end. Reminded me of the story of my husband and I but with less ghosts. And again, watching it, I was ugly crying. This was so good. I'm about to watch the Insidious reaction next. Kudos guys. 🤘 Let's GO!!!!!!
I'm so happy you guys loved the show! I agree with you, I felt this one so much more than Hill House for some reason, even though I love both. Bly Manor is deeply underrated! This last episode made me bawl my eyes out
bly manor is definitely an underrated show. i suggest watching “the Fall of the house of Usher” for your next series! it has the same actors as “hill house” and “bly manor” with of course some new ones. it’s considered scary but i think it doable!
I love Midnight Mass and can't wait to see your guys reaction, but The Fall of The House of Usher is my all time favorite as a Poe fan it blew me away! It's like Flanagan get's better as he ages and I think you guys are gonna have a great time with both! Also Midnight Club was pretty good but it didn't get the season 2 it needed.
The curse broke when Dani selflessly welcomed Viola into her so she could save Flora, so she didn't end up trapped at Bly when she died there. She was with Jamie the entire time but didn't want to 'haunt' her like the lady in the lake. She let Jamie live out her life while she waited for Jamie to join her in the afterlife.
You’re gonna looove Midnight Mass🙌🏾, hopefully. Also the only reason the spirits were stuck at the house was because of Viola’s rage gravity that was bound there. It’s not like Hill House
I LOVED Bly Manor so much and it gives you totally different feels. I was also much more emotional in it than Hill House but I was OBSESSED with Hill House. Bly Manor doesn't get the love it deserves for sure! I would 100% guess I loved Hill House more because of how much I love horror for sure. Both were incredible stories!
Watching this series with you guys has been ✨perfectly splendid✨. No but really it was so enjoyable watching this again with the Pack. I really appreciate it a lot more than I did the first time I saw it (probably because I was comparing it to Hill House). But, like Blake said, this show was just beautiful in every way. From beginning to end. Dani and Jamie are perfect together. And again, I really loved your reactions each week and I’m glad you guys enjoyed it more than I expected. I’m soooo excited for Midnight Mass!! You’ll see a lot of familiar faces again including Rahul Kohli (Owen)! I think Owen is one of my favorite tv characters of all time😊. That’s what amazes me about these Flanagan shows - I just fall in love with all of the characters and feel so attached to them. Just so well written. See you next week for Midnight Mass! ⛪️🤗❤
I literally just finished catching up on your episode 7 and 8 reactions and I was so ready to move on to the last one cuz I know you guys upload on Wednesdays. Then I didn’t see it and got sad. 4 minutes later, it’s here. Y’all constantly deliver for us. Amazon prime. ❤
Watching Bly Manor with you guys, has been amazing ❤️ I love Bly Manor ❤️ Great reaction as always ❤️ And I'm looking forward to see Midnight Mass next week 😉
I love The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass. Honestly, I only watched The Haunting of Bly Manor with you guys, so I don’t feel as connected to it, but I do appreciate its intimate love story, which contrasts with the dysfunctional family dynamics in Hill House. I’m excited to join you all for your Midnight Mass experience.
Thanks guys, this was such a good time! Every week I looked forward to the wednesdays, it's always a treat watching along with you guys. But I've especially been waiting for Midnight Mass and I'm so excited it's coming up next! I recommended that show to so many people and I don't think any of them watched it.. That show is an amazing experience. Please don't get spoiled by the comments! I'd even recommend having a third party do the comments for the coming 2 months, just in case. Lol. Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy it too, I can't wait!
Honestly I think all Flanagan Stories are just different flavors of great. You can’t even compare them really. I think a lot of people were disappointed with Bly because it was the follow-up to the massive success of Hill House and Mike kept saying Bly was scarier during the marketing run. The problem is he meant that he thinks the concept of Bly is a lot scarier to him than Hill, this kind of dementia of the spirit, just fading away. but obviously horror fans expected more of the literal horror, the hidden ghosts, the supreme jump scares etc and then they got a tragic gothic lovestory 😅 he kind of set Bly up for failure there a little
I love Bly but I'm so excited for you guys to watch Midnight Mass. I think Midnight Mass is my favorite of all the mike flanagan shows. All of Mike's others shows are based on books, but Midnight Mass is completely original!
Loved Bly Manor.. watched it atleast 5 times by now, excluding this reaction 😅❤ and yes, the second watch with these are really where it's at. Fall of The House Of Usher is the best shit ever. Flanagan keeps getting better and better🥺 Y'all gonna love it, can't wait! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😉
One thing i love about share Flanagan's library is seeing what resonates with who. They are all excellent. I still haven't seen Midnight Club, so maybe i will watch with you. I go back and forth between Hill House and Bly being my favorite. I suppose it depends a little on mood. I can relate more to Hill House, but that isn't always a good thing. Midnight Mass is 3rd and Usher is last, but I will probably watch them all dozens of times. I don't think anyone should apologize for their personal order. It is very personal. Glad you enjoyed. I am also glad the ending resonated with you. Not everyone gets it. I find it tragic in the most beautiful way.
Someone probably already commented (and I know it's not a series) but hoping you guys can react to HUSH - also by Mike Flannigan (to further immerse yourselves in the "Flannigan-verse!" ; D
You just finished my friend from work's favorite Flanagan show and you're about to start me and my bro's favorite and then you're off to my sister's favorite and I would say most people's favorite seems to Hill House, but all of the Flanagan shows are great. You should also think about checking out some of Flanagan's movies like Doctor Sleep.

@raviShri2099 agreed I actually like midnight club, I wish people were more open minded.
Dani spent her life avoiding reflections.
Jamie will spend the rest of her life staring at hers.

She is fantastic in everything she stars in.
She is very distinct from the other characters that she portrays especially portraying Love in You

I teared up so bad again.. That's why I like this, the bittersweet ending and the amount of heart.
This episode always makes me cry. So sad
Midnight Mass, baby! 🙏
“The Beast” (2023) is also an interpretation of the Henry James novella this episode was (loosely) based on :) super recommend it to folks!
I'm so happy you guys loved the show! I agree with you, I felt this one so much more than Hill House for some reason, even though I love both. Bly Manor is deeply underrated! This last episode made me bawl my eyes out
Midnight Mass is wild!! Sooooo gooood! 😍
the end of this show makes me cry so hard, even now watching this reaction. I had to pause the video for a few minutes to collect myself.
The ending of this made me cry the first time I saw it. The ending was sad, but bittersweet. I really want Dani and Jamie to make it until the end
Such an amazing love story 😢😢
I’ve seen it once and literally just realized the story teller was Jamie. I think I was sobbing so much and missed it.
Bly Manor is my personal favorite of Flanagan’s Netflix series. I’ve enjoyed them all… and Hill House is a very close second favorite.
she couldnt get left on the property.the curse was broken when Viola went into her body
Midnight Mass starts slower, it took me a few episodes to get into it, but I promise it pays off in the end.
bly manor is definitely an underrated show.
i suggest watching “the Fall of the house of Usher” for your next series! it has the same actors as “hill house” and “bly manor” with of course some new ones. it’s considered scary but i think it doable!
I’m soooo glad y’all are going to react to Midnight Mass next! My favorite one.
Perhaps not a happy ending or the ending u wanted, but the ending the story needed..
Excellent hat, Cojo!!
man, i bawled my way through this episode the first time and i bawled my way through again this time 😭💔
I'm so happy I found your channel! I already binged GoT and HotD & looooove this show as well - and really enjoyed your reaction. :))
They spent at least 8 years together because Flora was 8, and when they were at Owens restaurant they were 17. Plus however many years after that
I love Midnight Mass and can't wait to see your guys reaction, but The Fall of The House of Usher is my all time favorite as a Poe fan it blew me away!
The ending still makes me cry a lake, everytime i watched it 😢❤
Watching Bly Manor with you guys, has been amazing ❤️ I love Bly Manor ❤️ Great reaction as always ❤️ And I'm looking forward to see Midnight Mass next week 😉
I cannot wait for you guys to watch Midnight Mass!
Midnight Mass is my favorite series of the...series! Really looking forward to that one!
Blake's gonna love Midnight Club..... definitely cant miss that show
I love Hill House and Bly, they are really different stories and feels (as they should be imo)
Loved Bly Manor.. watched it atleast 5 times by now, excluding this reaction 😅❤ and yes, the second watch with these are really where it's at.
Fall of The House Of Usher is the best shit ever. Flanagan keeps getting better and better🥺
Y'all gonna love it, can't wait! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😉
I cannot WAIT for Midnight Mass!!!!
SO looking forward to you guys watching midnight mass! it's deffo my favourite after hill house
Fun fact Mike Flanagan is the actual husband of the actress who plays Viola & Theo
Someone probably already commented (and I know it's not a series) but hoping you guys can react to HUSH - also by Mike Flannigan (to further immerse yourselves in the "Flannigan-verse!" ; D
yesss cant wait for you guys to watch midnight mass and house usher!!
