I love this story. Remember it is lightly based on “the turn of the screw” and many other stories, mixed with his crazy mind. I think this is an amazing piece of work. Just stick with it 😊
This one felt a bit more disconnected than Hill. But maybe that was the point. The first had a strong family unit...this was maybe more about misfits and found family. But yeah...more sad.
I find the best way to appreciate the Haunting shows is to watch them normally, THEN rewatch it and look for the ghosts. That way you dont miss the subtleties in the dialogue and acting!
What makes Flanagan's shows so special to me are their themes and how they're addressed. With Hill House it was Grief and Family, Bly Manor is Love and Possessiveness, with Midnight Mass it's Faith and Addiction, and Midnight Club it's Mortality and Hope.
@@EmmarainePink I wouldn’t say it’s bad at all. It’s very well acted and the dialogue is pretty great. It’s very different from the two Haunting seasons for sure. Doesn’t really have that same tragic, tugging at your heart strings - type feel to it. It’s definitely different from Flanagan’s first two on Netflix. Art is subjective though, what one person would call bad, another may call a masterpiece. I thought Midnight Mass was great, but I connected with the two Haunting shows more.

@@BaddMedicine I can say with some confidence that the guy in white had already seen and memorized the hidden ghosts in the background video before the show!😂
Also, fun fact, Haunting of Hill House was adapted from a book by Shirley Jackson. Bly Manor is not only adapted from 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James but also, each episode references or is sorta based on James' short stories... The Great Good Place, The Pupil, The Two Faces, The Way It Came, The Altar of the Dead, The Jolly Corner, The Romance of Certain Old Clothes, and The Beast in the Jungle.
Can tell it's based on multiple stories. That was my impression before knowing. Feels a little disjointed throughout. It mostly comes together alright...but not completely.
A lil advice for Quinn, dont worry too much about the background ghosts. Just like Hill House, they are there for distractions and extra creepiness but not necessary significant to the story. Focus on the events. Also you guys dont try to overthink and over analyze because halfway through it will get REALLY confusing and all over the place, so wait for story to unfold and dont rush to get answers. Excited for you to watch this beautiful melancholy story!
One thing I never realized is in the opening scene at Miles' boarding school the teacher says that a fellow student won't be back for a few weeks because he took a tumble. And then Miles jumps out of the tree in his first attempt to be sent home. When that doesn't work he just continues to escalate his behavior to try and get home.
7:25 Diamond Dave, if you are talking about the Belmont Mansion, in Reidsville, NC, I know exactly where that is. I drive by it everytime my kids have to go to the doctor. I only live a few towns away. The Belmont is known as a beautiful wedding venue. It's strange to hear somebody in Wisconsin talking about a place near me...small world. 😊
My favourite Henry Thomas role for Flanagan is in Midnight Mass, even though it's one of his smaller ones. It's so subtle at times, even when he's not saying anything his facial expressions speak volumes
I'm so glad you guys are reacting to Bly Manor. Not really scary BUT it has such a beautiful story ! Very well written and of brilliant performances by all the actors, specially the kids. They amaze me, the boy that plays Miles is outstanding
Without spoiling anything, while Hillhouse was family-focused, I'm sure you may have begun to notice that Bly Manor is more relationship-focused. Both series are rough to sit through, beautiful to watch, but I think this series affected me more. As someone who also has PTSD, I find I can really identify with Dani and I think they did a great job with her character through various panic attacks and ways to cope with them. This is yet another series with a lot of great depth and I look forward to your future reactions.
This is another beautiful story, a little more subtle with the scares usually, but still unsettling and spooky! So excited to watch you guys react to this!!
So glad you guys are watching Mike Flanagan’s work! You HAVE to watch Midnight Mass next! Flanagan just got the rights to adapt Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” into a series 😄
Bly and Hill House are two very different stories but I really loved both of them. I'll admit that it took me a little longer to appreciate Bly, probably because Hill House was so phenomenal, but I grew to love the story and the characters. Mike Flanagan is truly a wonderful writer and I look forward to what he comes up with next.

So fun revisiting these shows with all of you. I’m not into this genre because I get easily scared and live alone lol I watched Midnight Mass first and then The Hauntings later. Midnight Mass is by far my favorite, hope you get to that one too. Great reactions as always!
I'm the same way, I hate horror but watched hill house because everyone was talking about it and I'm glad I did. It took a bit to get used to the horror, it helps to watch it with commentators haha

It’s a movie with Karen Gillian that came out 2013 that is underrated and a gem imo. I’d love to see your guys reaction to that
As I'm watching this, I'm thinking of my excitement over Mike Flannagan's _The Fall of the House of Usher_ coming this year to Netflix as his third installment.
Mike Flanagan nails everything he makes. I hope you keep diving further into his works, as there are many many Easter eggs in every movie and tv show he makes
Such a great reaction to an amzing show! Mike Flannagan has an amazing record making such shows as the Haunting Duology, and so many more! I would recommend seeing LadyKnighttheBrave's video essay about this show, not only it explores the inspiration for the show, it's themes and, connections with Hill House, but it also includes an interview with Mike Flannagan himself talking about many things of the production of the show. It's a great complementary watch for the Hunting of Bly Manor!!

If you get a chance, I recommend watching THE INNOCENTS (1961, Jack Clayton). It's a straightforward adaptation of "The Turn of the Screw" (the source of the main plot of BLY MANOR). Mike Flanagan is a genius at synthesizing older literary works through his own contemporary lens. Each episode title in BLY MANOR is a title of a Henry James short story!
With Hill House, I was jump scared and nervous. With Bly Manor, I had no tears left in me by the ending because of all the crying I did. Hill House was beautiful and scary, Bly Manor is beautiful and heartbreaking.
I cried my eyes out with hill house but not so much with bly manor. I guess "family focused stories" messes up with me more easily 😂 this one have more of a "relationships focus"
@@estersilva7804 oh, don’t get me wrong! Hill House had me crying. Especially the confetti speech and “go on without me” “how could we?” But gosh the quotes, which I won’t say now because I don’t wanna spoil the guys, in Bly Manor really hit me hard.
This story is less intense on the jump scares and has a more psychological horror aspect. It's a beautiful and incredibly sad story. I loved Hill House, but Bly is my favorite of the two. I've rewatched both shows a few times, but Bly I absolutely adore. It's perfectly splendid.
I'm so happy you guys are watching this one, too. However, didn't you say that only episodes 1 & 2 will be posted on RUclips? Or did all the ghosties scare my last few memory cells away 😅
@@BaddMedicine ohhhh thank you thank you 👏 i didn't want to get my hopes up 🙃 i love you guys' reactions. You all stole my heart with your reactions to the oldies and in particular with the ghosties and horrors. You cemented yourselves in my heart with LOTR. I was sooo gleefully happy when LOTR won you over 👏👏👏
I think they advertised Bly manor wrong because it's NOT a horror series it's a gothic romance (they all have horror elements) but it's such an amazingly heartbreaking story
So little flora here is played by the girl who does pepper pigs voice. Now, I don't watch peppa pig anymore thank God, but I would now just to hear peppa say "perfectly splendid" 😂
I've only gotten as far as your reaction to episode 1 and my first response was "SHEEEEEIT!!!!" Mr. Quinn, you are jumpy as HAYLE on this one and that's got me jumpy.. so we jumpin together.. And lastly, as a 44 yr old, I STILL have to tell my friend "don't look past me" when we're in normal situations.. Like, YOU JUST DON'T DO IT! so once baby girl started doin it, we gotta do like Jordan Peele and GET OUT..
Nell was an adult & the dad young, when they were in the red room in the last episode. The door was closing and they were hugging, the 3 of them, dad in middle, mom & Nell on each side of him.
This one I feel is less straight horror/scares and more sad/anxiety. Both shows do a great job of making the viewer feel exactly as the character does in the moment. Love them both!
Watching around 45:23, it made me wonder if the boy had invited demons "in" and, maybe, that was why he fell from the tree. He wanted them out, or to die. Guess I will keep watching to see if it explains.😳
I grew up in an extremely haunted house and area. I’m very psychic too. As a child, I used to hear a lot of different ghosts, different noises. I was like flora and in fact, I’ve shushed ghosts too because they were being very loud as I was trying to study. I just became very used to them being all around. I can completely understand flora.
For me, compared to Hill House, Bly Manor isn't as scary but on its own it is still "Perfectly Splendid". I LOVED it too, for different reasons. In fact, no need to compare when you think about it. Thanks for the reactions!
You guys have become my favourite reactors and of course I immediately dropped everything to watch this! Mike Flanagan is my favourite director and Hill House, Bly Manor and Midnight Mass are my top 3 show of all time

This story is less intense on the jump scares and has a more psychological horror aspect. It's a beautiful and incredibly sad story. I loved Hill House, but Bly is my favorite of the two. I've rewatched both shows a few times, but Bly I absolutely adore.
It's perfectly splendid.
Been waiting for this reaction since you finished haunting of Hill house
Mid night mass is amazing, my favorite of all his work. PLEASE watch it next
I'm so happy you guys are watching this one, too. However, didn't you say that only episodes 1 & 2 will be posted on RUclips? Or did all the ghosties scare my last few memory cells away 😅
We will have multiple episodes per cut 🤙😁
@@BaddMedicine ohhhh thank you thank you 👏 i didn't want to get my hopes up 🙃 i love you guys' reactions. You all stole my heart with your reactions to the oldies and in particular with the ghosties and horrors. You cemented yourselves in my heart with LOTR. I was sooo gleefully happy when LOTR won you over 👏👏👏
I think they advertised Bly manor wrong because it's NOT a horror series it's a gothic romance (they all have horror elements) but it's such an amazingly heartbreaking story
Just watched episode 5 and came back to the start of this. Wow. Lmao I'm lost for words. Who ever directed this is in-human himself.
Spot on! The book and show are usually classed ass Gothic Romance rather than horror
Yeeeeeeess! I've been waiting for this!
2:00 - AAAH, I just noticed that the groom/fiancé is Greg Sestero from "The Room"! 😆..... oh hi Mark!
Thank you guys for doing this show. Absolutely incredible stuff. Perfectly splendid. I hope we can see you guys do Scream 6 as well 🤗
Watching around 45:23, it made me wonder if the boy had invited demons "in" and, maybe, that was why he fell from the tree.
Mike Flanagan is my favourite director and Hill House, Bly Manor and Midnight Mass are my top 3 show of all time
I’m so glad you’re watching this 👍🏻
