How to Make a Simple Dal & Use a Pressure Cooker!

  • So why is this video in a playlist called "Recipes for Bachelors?" Well that actually has to do with the origin of this entire channel. When I started "Eating to Live" back in 2011 it was to help out my husband's bachelor classmates with their cooking skills. These guys were away from home, studying in a foreign country, and had rarely had to prepare food on their own. I posted my first few videos and that's where it all began. I should also add that during his bachelor days my husband did his fair share of cooking, and realized how invaluable it was to hone some skills in the kitchen. Since it had been a long time since I shared a recipe for a simple dal, I decided it was high time to share one. When we need a reset, we typically go for a yellow dal with a vegetable side dish plus rotis or fulkas. This dal is comfort is a bowl, and like any bachelor will tell you, knowing how to make a good and simple dal can be a lifesaver. Also, knowing how to use your pressure cooker can save you time and energy, so here are some tips for that too!

    Nice to know about your story in the description, well I'm glad I found your video as I am a student and I shifted to Vancouver just a few months back from India.(Can I ask where are you from in Canada ?)
    Being a "boy" in my family just 18 years old, I have never cooked before but thanks a lot to you(My Mom would be really happy as she does not have any daughter) .With my ongoing studies I like to cook with perfection, that's what I have figured after making my first Dal from your video. :D
    Thanks again.

      Welcome to Canada Aryamann! I hope you are enjoying the beautiful city of Vancouver and that you are finding us Canadians to be polite and helpful. I am settled in Toronto, Ontario which is the city where I was born and grew up. I certainly hope that your dal was successful, and that you find many other useful recipes on RUclips to help you. Best of luck with your studies, and with your cooking journey! I think you will be a pro in the kitchen very soon, then you can share your creations with me!

    Thanks for this recipe. Courtesy of the Covid-19 pandemic, I'm stuck at my home and guess what I have never cooked for myself. I have nailed down your recipe. One thing I would like to mention is that you actually made the dal to water ratio very clear. Unfortunately, I damaged one of my cookers because I messed up that ratio (before watching your video). After that ordeal, I landed on your video and was able to make up a palatable version of your recipe.

    Hi, Thanks for the simple hassle-free recipe.
    I would appreciate your recommendation for timing for a non-Indian style whistling pressure cooker - a western style stove top...?

      @maharajaneela  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your kind words! I really wish I could help, and maybe someone else in the comments will know better, but I have never used a non-whistling cooker. If you're using a regular pot, then you can bring everything up to a boil, then lower the heat, and cook the lentils on simmer for about 30 minutes or until softened. once again I wish I could help, and I hope someone else can offer advice too.

      @@maharajaneela I think we're confused about the term "whistle". I always thought a pressure cooker lets off some steam and then we did something, like turn it down. Are you saying we just leave the pot on high and it will let off some steam, we still leave it alone, it will let off some steam again, and we leave it alone, and THEN, it will let off some steam again, and THEN we turn it down and let it simmer, without fooling with the pot until that third whistle? If that's so, it explains a lot of my problems. I thought we were to do something as soon as it whistles. I guess many in the US wouldn't say, "whistle". They would probably say it "hissed" instead, and that might be the confusion. I don't think Indian pressure cookers (for the stovetop) truly operate different than a "western" one. A pot is a pot, after all.....

    • @maharajaneela
      @maharajaneela  2 года назад

      I can certainly understand the confusion with the term whistle when you put it that way! But, your description is correct. It should let off steam three times and then you turn it down to simmer. Sincerely hope that helps. Do let me know if you give it another try ☺️

    • @rajeevprasad3711
      @rajeevprasad3711 2 года назад

      @@chagoot1024 Perhaps I should clarify what I mean by a "western" pressure cooker....
      What I meant was the typical non-whistling/hissing pressure cooker you get in most non-indian domestic markets. This type of cooker is bought-up to pressure and then the heat is lowered to maintain the selected steady-cooking pressure ; "High or "Low" pressure as per the cooks selection. This type is of a sealed-unit under pressure, and there is minimal to no water/steam loss; so no whistling/ hissing or steam escaping if working properly. One has to time the cooking using a separate timer.
      The "Indian-style" pressure cooker works in a oscillating manner where the excess pressure is released in the form of a steam whistle/hissing which drops pressure below and the cycle starts over again - just don't let the pot run out of water!!. One can use the intervals of steam hissing as a way to base the cooking duration - hence the "number of whistles" often mentioned in Indian pressure-cooker recipe videos...
      But you're right; "a pot is a pot, after all..."

    • @maharajaneela
      @maharajaneela  4 года назад +1

      Haha! Yes sometime there is a fourth whistle if there is still pressure in the cooker. That's ok, it doesn't change the outcome very much. As for the thickness, maybe a little less water? Only slightly less, like 1/4 cup. Hope that works!

    • @maharajaneela
      @maharajaneela  3 года назад

      I think I understand your question now. But I believe it depends on the amount of dal that you would like to cook. If you are cooking 1 cup of dal which does not have any chilka (shell) then you can use 3 to 3.5 cups of water depending on the consistency that you like. I don't believe this ratio will change depending on the size of cooker. But to be honest, I have been using the same cooker for 11 years and I have never used a cooker with larger capacity. Very sorry if this does not help you 🙏🏽

    Thank goodness! Finally a cooking channel where I don't have to endure that typical excruciatingly annoying aunty voice and the usual "hello fraaaaaaannds" intro. Good job!

      Is the pressure cooker closed properly? If so, then do you have the correct amount of water for the amount of dal you are making? This has happened to me before, I think it was the water quantity.

    What kind of gas it is? Or it's a large electrical cooking instrument?

      I wish I had a gas range, but unfortunately I cook on electric. I miss when I lived in India and had a gas stove.

      dont worry, Einstein just thought you are a born indian and started judging you..nice tutorial though, time to head for patel brothers , buy the ingredients and live the ominous weather of NJ in hibernation..

      Yes it's an easy assumption to make! My heritage is Indian, and I'm married to an Indian but I'm Canadian, which is why I sound like one. Anyway, I'm happy to know that you're giving this dal a try, and thank you for watching. I hope you're keeping warm during this harsh winter weather. We've been having a difficult time up here, that's for sure!

      Its not fake, its canadian accent and its almost perfect. She is speaking much better than many other indian youtubers in terms of accent comparison.
      Either we can have correct accent like the way other people speak in that country or we can talk in our own local regional language like the way south indians speaks (for example).

      Hello Gaurav! That's right! I'm a born Canadian! Yes, my ancestry is Indian, and I'm happy to say that in the last decade I have learnt to speak decent enough Hindi (with a Katrina Kaif accent) but my English will always sound Canadian. Thank you for your gracious understanding and wise words 😊👍
