  • In this video we take a look at the Milwaukee Table Saw. Are contractor saws the ideal choice for small workshops, and does a cordless saw make sense?

      Thanks Peter. I like to think I've always had a good eye for composition and enjoy filming enormously. But I lack patience and filming in a small workshop is hard. So this video has been almost 2 months in the making while I took the time to practice, experiment and try-out ways of making these sorts of videos easier and quicker. I'm glad to see that work has come through in the final edit.

    Terrific video Karl. You’re getting better and better at this.
    It would be interesting to see if you could design and print a near-blade extraction feature. Bet you could.

      Thanks Frank - I'm glad you think so. I've an idea for the blade extraction which I may feature in a video if it pays off. That said - and I hope you saw in the video - the supplied guard is very ingenious in terms of how it works and how it keeps your fingers away from the blade on both sides.

      Thanks Keith - yes a bit quieter but nothing like as quiet as an induction motor. And yes I was very lucky to find one on eBay, and it was an auction win from a seller over 3.5 hours away by car. I'm still looking for the perfect saw though, so who knows what's next. Only The Badger has had more table saws than me in recent years!!

    I would imagine you will be able to 3D print a new guard that incorporates dust extraction, I have a scheppach saw which comes with overhead extraction. I must say the best way is to have a very powerful extractor with a cyclone to be good at removing as much sawdust as possible, plus another for the air in the workshop. Just think how the Americans and some UK you tubers get on when they remove the guard completely and use the saw. Not only reducing the opportunity to assist with dust extraction but also removing the opportunity of saving their fingers.
    I think if I was ripping solid wood I would put a shorter sacrificial piece to the fence that does not go past the the gullet of the saw blade at bench level as recommended by the old woodworking regs and by the H.S.E. greatly reducing the risk of kickback.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop

      All good points. The Nilfisk vac is actually very good with a 51mm port and - like I say - the larger the hose the better. To be honest I were in the states a single car garage would be the same size as our UK double garages and I'd be reviewing a decent cabinet saw. I have been experimenting with a solution - what's curious is the dewalt saw is almost identical and its blade guard has a dust port... in the US the Sawstop blade guard is a common retro-fit fix. The full depth fence is great but as you say not recommended in the HSE table saw safety guide. Thanks for a great comment.

    Awesome review!!! I'm so glad you were truthful and honest about the dust collection. I've seen many videos over this saw the say that this saw has some of the best dust collection out there; which, I have found NOT to be true. The dust collection is extremely poor since the blade housing is not completely sealed Have you found the uneven table top to be an issue?? I'm looking for some honest feed back on that since I've noticed the top to have lots of dips and hills and one end of the saw might sit higher than the other end even it you've completely leveled up actually saw.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  4 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for the comment. On mine the top was generally flat with slight gaps on the outside of the mitre slots but minor. In many ways I like the saw but the dust collection was the saws fatal flaw. I have since replaced the saw with the Bosch GTS 10 XC with much better dust collection.

      Strawbyte Workshop awesome ... I really appreciate the fast feedback. I’m a new subscriber and I’m really liking the content your putting out. I use to own the Milwaukee table saw as well and have since switched over to the Dewalt cordless table saw. I didn’t notice how uneven the top was until I starting pushing a material through the saw. After a few months the high spots really started to stand out. I put a certified straight edge along the top and saw a really big bow in the middle. The Dewalt cordless table isn’t also isn’t perfect but it’s much flatter than the Milwaukee.

      I also purchased Milwaukee table saw, just before Christmas last year, I did check the table top and it was really bad, 1.5 mm difference in all directions, I sent the saw to have it repaired/swapped by Milwaukee. But Brexit came and they didnt have spare parts, I have waited for over two weeks, then I sent couple of emails and because they couldnt get my saw back to me, I was issued refund (original shop didnt have any in stock).
      I then purchased the saw from somewhere else, checked the top as soon as it was out of the box. Same issue, not as bad and only at the end, behind the blade, there is a dip, nearly 1mm from edge to edge.
      Am I being too fussy? It is site saw, I understand, but my Dewalt 745, corded, was perfect, within 0.1 mm.
      I am on Milwaukee platform so I dont want to give up, I like the saw as a whole tool. But for that money I expect perfection.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад

      Mine had a similar dip. Not sure by how much but you could see light under a straight edge. Admit was behind the blade it didn't affect the cuts I was getting from the saw. So you could jusde by results. Put the saw through its paces and see what the output is like. But, as you say for the money flatness to sub millimeter should be expected.
      And this Brexit thing is a pain. I've a Festool vac and Bosch spares stuck at the border at the mo. Frustrating.

    Thanks for the review Karl. I’m a bit late to the party but I’m now in the market for a cheap table saw for my small w/shop. The dust extraction performance is a red line for me. Health is always #1 priority - cheap to ensure and “expensive” to fix. Any thoughts about the myriad of approx £100 table saws available, Screwfix, Homebase, Titan etc? Thanks Christian.

    Hello Thanks for your Video, so 2 years later what is your opinion on this saw??? still, considered a keeper???? , thanks again

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  Год назад

      Thanks for a great question. Full disclosure as of right now I've a Axminster AC250TS/AW250TS as my daily driver in the workshop, but I borrow and use the Milwaukee saw when working outside in the garden in the summer - it's on permanent loan to a family member close by. Overall I'm still happy with the saw but if you're largely going to be setting-up a table saw in a workshop setting, close to a mains socket, then I'm not sure the saw makes sense and it's a shame that Milwaukee don't have a mains conversion kit (dummy battery with a mains lead) like other battery jobsite saws do.
      The fence is still my favourite feature it's simple and precise. I've learned to put-up with the dust collection issue I mentioned in the video especially as my Axminster saw has its own issues. I now think with all my years of experience that all table saws are designed to produce dust fast and what you're dealing with is how best to stop it messing up your workspace. No saw is perfect although I do think the lack of over-blade collection is a downside in the case of the milwaukee.
      Since making the video lots of other brands have offerings in this space, including Metabo. So there's plenty of choice and rack and pinion fences are commonplace now too.

    When you say that you tuned it up (beyond adjusting the indicators) to being able to produce/cut really accurately, what were the things you had to dial in further?

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      The following adjustments were made in accordance with the instructions in the manual.
      1. Throat Plate Adjustment
      2. Blade Angle (Bevel) Adjustments at 0° and 45°
      3. Blade to Miter Slot Adjustment
      4. Blade to Fence Adjustment
      5. Riving Knife to Saw Blade Adjustment
      That's pretty comprehensive and they were pretty easy to do with specific screws and adjustment points on the saw.

      @@StrawbyteWorkshop thanks so much for letting me know!
      Knowing what you now know about the saw would you still get it again, or would you go the Dewalt in the future?

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      @@theonlychewman That's a good question. In fact I've now sold the saw and bought the Bosch GTS10XC as a replacement. There are a couple of reasons why I switched.
      1. While it's lovely to have a portable saw, I'm mostly workshop based and so a corded saw would work best for all day long cutting.
      2. There were a couple of days where I would run out of juice on larger jobs - I was doing more of those types of jobs.
      3. I'd re-arranged the workshop to make room for a saw in the centre on a rolling stand. I could have a larger saw table and I've really benefitted in having a bigger table.
      But I don't regret buying the saw It worked really well for me and I would continue to recommend it. It's just a shame it doesn't have a mains connection option like some battery tools do.

    • @theonlychewman
      @theonlychewman 3 года назад +1

      @@StrawbyteWorkshop Yeah thanks for the reasons. Given there are other corded ones out there like an older DeWalt and the Hitachi/HiKoki ones, what was it about the Bosch that won you over?
      I'm asking as I'm looking for a table saw at the moment. I don't need a battery powered one but I do like some of the features of the brushless motors and rack and pinion fence that the Milwaukee and DeWalt's have. I like Milwaukee's almost immediate blade stop too.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  3 года назад

      I think part of the decision to go for the Bosch was that the DeWalt is so noisy. The Bosch seems quieter, or similar to the Milwaukee at least.
      The Bosch has a good sized table either side of the blade and a full length fence. The blade guard had been upgraded on my model fixing a complaint from other users on YT. I like the design of the outfeed support and how all the accessories fit within the saw when not in use like the Milwaukee.
      The sliding table is a feature I do like a lot. But it has a small capacity, but that's fine as I have a mitre saw for cross cutting larger items, or MFT for panels. Many complaints are made about the sliding table having too much slop, but mine was OK and with some adjustments can be pulled in to good enough.
      Dust collection is better than either the DeWalt or Milwaukee.
      I will review this saw at some point as it is a keeper. But don't hold your breath I'm crazy busy at the mo.

    • @StrawbyteWorkshop
      @StrawbyteWorkshop  4 года назад +2

      The hose was from Axminster in the UK and I made custom 3d printed dust port adapters for both the saw and the Nilfisk ends. What saw do you have? One of the challenges we face is that many saws have dust ports designed for larger vacuum extractors and contractor saws have imperial measurement diameters. I've sold custom vac adapters off my website in the past but due to low demand have focused on my tracksaw guides. If your interested in a custom port adapter let me know.

    • @ohms

      @@StrawbyteWorkshop Appreciate the reply! I have the Metabo TS254, which is currently jerry-rigged with some PVC pipe to my Nilfisk Aero 26 vac. It's... not great, haha.
      I haven't measured the diameter of the saw outlet, but i'll do that and have a gander on the Axminster site. The problem I find with the NIlfisk is the proprietary end and the lack of available adapters for it, as a result. Quite irritating!
