Slay the Princess is unbelievably well written and voiced. It's a 3 hour game that I played for 20 hours just to see absolutely everything it had to offer, and it kept surprising and impressing me the whole time.
Id say that due to the very clear intent for replayability there's an expectation most people would at least, generally, do two playthroughs. Making it a six hour game at the least. I would expect only a very rare weirdo or to stop at 3 hours. Or just someone who doesn't like it.

When I played this game I immediately ran to the credits to check if the voice actor was Adam Millard, but it wasn't. This bit makes me think maybe he's using a pseudonym.
That narrative for Slay the Princess was AMAZING! What an excellent way to show what the game is like without spoiling anything. That was truly brilliant. I love every video you do and I'm proud to be one of your patrons. It's well worth the money to help someone make such entertaining and insightful videos. Cheers to a new year, Adam!
Chants of Sennaar was so good that my sister and I basically finished it in one day; it was insanely addicting and like nothing we had ever played before
@@albetoferroleba6700 As much as I adore outer wilds and chants of sennaar and I think everyone ever should play them both, I don't see how the two relate at all.
So glad Pseudoregalia was on this list, but I can't believe you didn't mention that there's an in-game toggle specifically to change whether Sybil wears pants
I got totally addicted to Against the Storm like a week ago and I’ve already put an ungodly number of hours into it. It solves my issue of feeling like there’s no “point” in a lot of city builders because there’s a clear goal and feeling of progression. Really really fantastic game!
Mosa Lina cracks me up because I played the demo, felt like the items I had were poorly designed for the challenge, and moved on to the next demo. No where did it explain it's gimmick and I was surprised when I heard people describing it as amazing several months later.
Chants, Jusant, and Cassette Beasts absolutely blew me away. What a strong year for games. Super excited to check out the indies I haven't played on this list.
Everything I've played on this list is excellent. This guy has impeccable taste. I will definitely be checking out some more of these. Slay the Princess is my personal fave so far.
Void Stranger is an absolutely fantastic game that reminds me of Baba Is You's great puzzles and La Mulana's many, many secrets. I haven't played Chants of Sennaar, but if Tunic told me anything, is that languages are super fun. Edit: Just beat Sennaar last night. Definitely worth it.
I used that same description to explain Void Stranger. It's seriously top 3 of the year for me. The devs have another previous game that I haven't played yet but has great reviews too, Zero Ranger
The Talos Principle 2 is a must play from this year imo. It's an ambitious departure from the first game and full of some brilliantly designed puzzles.
I am obsessed with Against the Storm. It’s the first settlement builder game I’ve found with a progression system that I enjoy and actually pushes me to explore different strategies than doing the same few things over and over again.
Slay the Princess is fantastic. I’ve done one playthrough of it but I intend to go back and 100% it soon. En Garde was a solid 4-5 hour adventure that was fun the whole way through. The epitome of short and sweet. World of Horror I’ve played a couple of playthroughs of, and enjoyed it a lot. Definitely another game I need to play more.
I *love* your way of showcasing Slay the Princess. I watched RTgame play about 10 minutes of it, went **NOPE**, and ran away because it was really unsettling and my brain didn't like it at all, even though I can see that it's brilliant.
I think the best one sentence summary of Slay the Princess is a comment I stumbled across on /v/. "Slay the Princess is a graphic novel love story about two people destined to constantly hurt and oppose each other."
Really bummed book of hours wasn’t on this list. It’s such a unique game, somehow using cards to become the librarian of an occult library and reading increasingly difficult and accursed books while performing cryptic rituals.
I loved the first 2 hours of it but sadly I kinda felt like the _actual_ gameplay loop once you've unlocked all the basics in the village suddenly felt a lot less rewarding
I just came here to the comments to say that myself. Personally, I liked Book of Hours much better than Slay the Princess, as charming as that game was. The combination of free form furniture and book organization paired with the card mechanics felt pretty original to me, and the themes of the different rooms in the castle were just a joy to unlock and discover each time. I'm not really big on history, but found myself surprisingly invested in discovering the history of Hush House. Also, it has the cutest snek I've ever seen in a game. Maybe Adam can play it when the first DLC hits.
I thought and still stand by that Cassette Beasts was absolutely snubbed at the Game Awards this year for an indie title nomination. It's the only creature-battling pokemon-like I've tried that manages to actually feel like a completely different game in the same genre instead of just a game trying to copy pokemon. And the soundtrack is just wonderful. Thanks for including it on your list!
World of Horror makes me sad because I am forced to know that not everyone will be as totally entranced and obsessed with it as I was when I first played it but it will always hold a special place in my heart and others
yomi hustle is incredible and my personal favorite game of 2023, the base game is great but i think you should have mentioned the mod support which is what truly elevates it to another level, there are hundreds of fun and incredibly cool playable characters so even if you don't settle on a main the game is always fresh thanks to all the stuff the community is putting out
Never heard of the game before, given that it's one minute it's better to sell the base game. Still not sure if turn-based fighting game is fun... If somebody is interested they will learn about modding soon enough.
I've played the game for more than 100 hours, so I feel qualified to answer: YES, it is fun! Incredibly fun! This is both the most satisfying and most challenging game I've played over the months I was invested in it!@@bnjkf9u3
@@bnjkf9u3 Many players jokingly describe it as "Chess 2". It's more tactical and intellectual than most fighting games, though less thrilling to play most of the time.
i truly love and appreciate your games you should have played series, and your content in general. you managed to get me to add 5 more amazing games to my library i would have missed otherwise. thank you
For me the Game of the Year is "In Stars and Time". It hasnt come out to much fanfare but the game is an actual gem. It's a monochrome rpg with a focus on characters and taking advantage of the main gimmick of: Spoiler Alert Bellow (even though it reveals it at the start) It's a timeloop game.
Play Slay the Princess, it is AMAZING it's an easy 10/10 and its not gonna take up too much time it puts "perspective" into "perspective" if that makes any sense 😂
One of the most well put and entertaining channels I can just sit back and listen to. I always get a little burst of excitement whenever I see a new Adam Millard video pop up. Please keep uploading, your videos are a significant part of my daily routine!
I’ve played Void Stranger about 50 hours per week since I watched this video. Thank you for showing what I believe to be one of the best games of all time. I’ve 100% the game as far as I know, since I’m playing blind. But I’ve already found a few extra things since I started thinking that so I’m sure I’m still missing a few things. Best $12 I’ve ever spent.
ArchitectofGames, your yearly series always makes me happy and fills me with joy. Never miss it for the last couple years now. Just the warm fuzzies of being happy about games, especially ones that are made by lesser known developers.
Pulled lots of new games from this list. Thank you for continuing to put out such incredible content. So much work; we see it and appreciate you very much. One of my favorite channels.
The video did exactly what it intended to do - and now I don't know which games to get next and whether I even want to wait for whenever that is. Great delivery, great selection, the video I missed in this great year of gaming. 10/10, liked and subbed. Thank you. Oh, and your bit about Slay the Princess ... ... ... slayed it.
I have a reccomendation for a new game this year! There's a very charming and very difficult puzzle game called Pâquerette Down The Bunburrows Aeide from a banger soundtrack and lovely GameBoy-style graphics, I feel confident in saying this is the best puzzle game I've played since Baba Is You, and that's saying a *lot*.
This video convinced me to play void stranger, and I am *very* glad I did because it's incredible! A solid, emotional story, satisfying puzzles, overarching mysteries you only really start to uncover after a few playthroughs, and tons of moments that made me go "Wait, I could've done that the whole time?". The first few trips through the void are slow and difficult, each floor passed is hard-won, but eventually you learn secret shortcuts and find secret items and uncover hidden game mechanics and by the end, rocketing to the bottom of the void is fast and satisfying, even once you already know the answers to the normal puzzles.
I just picked up Pseudoregalia and Mosa Lina before watching this and realized Roboquest was already in my Steam library from some previous bundle I got. I will definitely be checking them all out. Thanks for the suggestions.
I'm pleasently surprised to see slay the princess in here! Very good video :) Lots of these I was already planning to play, but they'll have to wait before I get Chants of Sennaar, I had never heard about it and it looks absolutely wonderful to play!! Thx for another great video
If you liked Terra Nil (or just like the concept), I highly recommend Wildmender. It's a similar concept - 'terraform' this barren desert with plants - but it's a survival-crafter, which gives even more room for creatively making it beautiful in your own way. The visuals are fantastic, when you're going one plant at a time for food, and next thing you know, you've accidentally created an amazing oasis
I played Chants of Sennaar after you made a video about it a couple months ago and immediately told everyone I know to play it. It’s so good, I thought about it for weeks even though the playtime is relatively short
Its really difficult for ne to reconcile my opinion of Starfield, and the online opinion of Starfield. The things people bring up that they dont like, are often the things that I like most about it. Maybe its just that I've always fantasized about exploring the emptiness of space, and know that Starfield is likely the closest I'll get to doing so, now that I'm a little too old to still have hope I'll actually get to do it. I dunno, I wouldn't say that it exceeded my expectations, but it certainly met them all for me
I had a similar experience. In my case, the game was everything I expected and more, and had great fun with it. But I seem to be in the minority, and I'm not completely sure why. Guess we all have different tastes. Not that I care that much. The only thing that bothers me is that all this backlash means its quite possible we won't get more games like this. But, hey, at least we got this one.
I too hope that 2014 is mostly adequate. Every year, I judge how well I've been paying attention to fun weird games by how many of the games on this list I've played or heard of before.
Thanks for putting out this list!! When you watch as much gaming content as I do its hard to find something new, but I hadn't heard of quite a few of these!!
Oh, that Slay The Princess bit was BRILLIANT! I've admittedly only played and bought a couple of games on this list (STP and Gravity Crcuit), but the rest all look very solid to me as well and most of them are on my wishlist for the future. Cheers!
Just got Against the Storm 2 weeks ago and it has hooked me like no other game in a long long time. The way they solved the "issues" of city builders with clever design choices is simply inspiring. 10/10 I'm just puzzled why it has so little coverage on RUclips 🤯
I bought RoboQuest after seeing gameplay footage of it in one of your recent video's credits. It is quite good and the Top 3 placement is well deserved! Thanks for including such banger gameplay in your credits sections.

I'm honestly just glad that Gravity Circuit is on your list, it is such a great game and I've been thinking it wouldn't get the recognition it deserved for a long time because of how many massive games released in 2023. I haven't gotten around to playing most of these games, I've had my eyes on several of them but some of them, like Your Only Move is Hustle, I wasn't sure about, but it seems like a lot of people loved it so I'll add it to the list of games to pick up when I get the chance.
Coming back to say thank you for the Pseudoregalia recommendation! 6 hours in and not done yet, but the movement has been so fun and inspiring! (if also frustrating at times lol)
Several games iron pineapple showcased being on this list is really satisfying, ty adam ^-^ Saw robo quest just yesterday in my steam recommendations and was thinking about it, you saying it's good makes this really easy. Great vid
Chants of Sennaar was the biggest hit for me this year. Amazing that they managed to make all the languages unique enough to make all the sections interesting, but similar enough to support the narrative.
Your explanation for slay the princess is the best advertisement I've ever seen for a game. It's not even my kind of game generally, but I'm going to get it and try it, because your segment on it was so damn interesting.
Cassette Beasts was very nice , (Similar situation with WIldermyth , where i played before i had even seen the video , but its nice you are giving a spotlight to games that would appreciated / kinda need it ) PS: the slay the princess bit was very fun .
I feel like every year this is gonna become my tracker for how good my taste in games is, I was so surprised that so many of my favourite games this year were mentioned, looking at the other half there’s still a lot to go through

For me the Game of the Year is "In Stars and Time".
It hasnt come out to much fanfare but the game is an actual gem.
It's a monochrome rpg with a focus on characters and taking advantage of the main gimmick of: Spoiler Alert Bellow (even though it reveals it at the start)
It's a timeloop game.
Play Slay the Princess, it is AMAZING it's an easy 10/10 and its not gonna take up too much time it puts "perspective" into "perspective" if that makes any sense 😂
I gotta say you do an incredible Jonny Simms impression, that Slay the Princess segment was perfect
I had to double check and look up the VA, the resemblance is uncanny lmao.
One of the most well put and entertaining channels I can just sit back and listen to. I always get a little burst of excitement whenever I see a new Adam Millard video pop up. Please keep uploading, your videos are a significant part of my daily routine!
Glad to see Slay the Princess on here. The game was an absolute treat to find just before the year's end.
20:37 Saying “sexy” right as you cut to the Tower version is truly impeccable taste LOL
It's nice that I've heard most of the titles (I'm counting 17 out of 20). I haven't played most of them, but they were definitely on my radar.
Turbo Overkill was my favourite game this year. It was developed by one guy, which is absolutely insane.
Have to say, that Slay the Princess narrator impression was spot-on!
ArchitectofGames, your yearly series always makes me happy and fills me with joy. Never miss it for the last couple years now. Just the warm fuzzies of being happy about games, especially ones that are made by lesser known developers.
I look forward to this video every year!
Pulled lots of new games from this list. Thank you for continuing to put out such incredible content. So much work; we see it and appreciate you very much. One of my favorite channels.
Yomi hustle is mentioned, I'll go pack up my torches and pitchforks.
There's a very charming and very difficult puzzle game called Pâquerette Down The Bunburrows
Aeide from a banger soundtrack and lovely GameBoy-style graphics, I feel confident in saying this is the best puzzle game I've played since Baba Is You, and that's saying a *lot*.
Very happy to see "Slay the Princess" take the #1 spot. It's definitely in my top 3 "best games of all time".
I definitely need to get into Against the Storm. Once I've regained my progress in Gloomwood, since my saves were out of date.
Pseudoregalia was such a blast to play! No way that I'd have found out about it without this video
THANK YOU for mentioning Void Stranger.
Easily one of my top 3 games of this year.
"Where are all the mom games?" I know exactly where you got that idea from. Thanks for the amazing year of videos you gave us.
Absolutely astounding end-of-year video, as always!
Love these videos every year
I played Chants of Sennaar after you made a video about it a couple months ago and immediately told everyone I know to play it.
You should try No Man's Sky. The game has come fast from what it was, and makes you feel like an abandoned explorer in a vast and infinite world.
No Man's Sky just obliterates Starfield if you are interested in the vast emptiness of space.
Cheers!
did you play chants of sennar yet? :)
@@berrylly Not yet sadly, but one day!
Void stranger was my favorite game this year, glad you mentioned it!
Just got Against the Storm 2 weeks ago and it has hooked me like no other game in a long long time. The way they solved the "issues" of city builders with clever design choices is simply inspiring. 10/10
I'm just puzzled why it has so little coverage on RUclips 🤯
I bought RoboQuest after seeing gameplay footage of it in one of your recent video's credits. It is quite good and the Top 3 placement is well deserved! Thanks for including such banger gameplay in your credits sections.
I look forward to the next hundred years when you can finally start recommending 21 games!
"Sorry guys, I won't talk about Pizza Tower"
(Starts talking about Dredge)
MyHouse being on this list is INSANE such a surreal experience
Was so happy to see YOMI on the list, however I'm not surprised that you main wizard -.-
duel me rahhhh!!
Many of these games look awesome and I’ve never even heard of them. Goes to show how great 2023 was for gaming
Finally!!! It’s that time of the year!!!

Will try the demo too; big fan of cryptic games
we stan void stranger in this house 🙏
14:06 Aaaaaah yeeeah, I was hopin' you give thumbs up to Void Stranger
I always look forward to these yearly videos.
If you're looking for more recommendations, I just did a video about 46 games released in 2023, most of them obscure.
Did Adam just say he hopes 2014 is OK?! Have I just dreamed the last 10 years of my life?! Someone give me the date ASAP!!
Painting a bedroom and an Adam Millard video drops. Going to be a great day.
Found your channel yesterday through your video on Pyre, the quality of your videos is very consistent and you have earned yourself another subscriber
wait you found me through what I think is my least-watched video ever? damn
16:00 - Linguistics puzzle game, you say...? Oh, it's already in my library. XD
Slay the princess definitely earned that number one mention on the list. Great bit on it too!
"Heart. Lungs. Liver. Nerves."
Several games iron pineapple showcased being on this list is really satisfying, ty adam ^-^
Saw robo quest just yesterday in my steam recommendations and was thinking about it, you saying it's good makes this really easy.
Great vid
Great list! Lots I hadn't seen before. Great pacing as well. Much appreciated!
Months later, I’ve played Slay the Princess. Brilliant. Thank you for convincing me to try it!
Love this video. Can really tell this guy loves video games; the passion is tangible
I was sent here by black tabby games and I loved your slay the princess segment. It was so fun 😊
Congrats on 420k subscribers, Did you know it's 69 days till spring?
I'm always glad when most of the games you list are games I already have/on my wishlist
You have exceptional taste
Wow, you actually managed to show me a couple of games I haven't seen before.
I'm impressed.
Wow man! This was indeed a crazy year for games. Really good list and super well presented!
Idk if this is just me but this guys voice is so calming to me
Cassette Beasts was very nice ,
(Similar situation with WIldermyth , where i played before i had even seen the video , but its nice you are giving a spotlight to games that would appreciated / kinda need it )
PS: the slay the princess bit was very fun .
Thank you! I just needed to lenghten my already unfinishable lists of games to play!
Yes!! I came to this video explicitly hoping Void Stranger would get some recognition, and I was not disappointed!
I feel like every year this is gonna become my tracker for how good my taste in games is, I was so surprised that so many of my favourite games this year were mentioned, looking at the other half there’s still a lot to go through
Thank you for mentioning South Scrimshaw! I never heard about it before, and ended up falling in love immediately after trying!
I just realized you sound like Moss from IT Crowd. Keep it up, love your videos :)
Great video! I indeed hadn't heard of most of these, most of them look very appealing.
Adding all of these to my list of considerations of course! Happy New Year!
