    • @lukebrown5017
      @lukebrown5017 3 года назад +320

@Arnorian Restoration they were the 501st legion of the grand army of the republic, but once the republic was no more and the galaxy was under the rule of the empire, the 501st and other legions were “officially” disbanded, stormtroopers had no legion or battalion. But they referred to themselves as the 501st 1. as a nod to their past, and 2. Because they knew themselves as the 501st for so long, it just became synonymous with who they were

    • @lukebrown5017
      @lukebrown5017 3 года назад +110

@Arnorian Restoration I’ve read the sources, and hence the air quotes “disbanded”, as all republic legions and battalions were disbanded. The 501st were still active as they were the most effective legion of the clone army, and were used in many of the empires more important battles but were never referred to as such, the clones of the 501st referred to themselves as such due to their history and affiliation with the name but the empire never acknowledged them as such. “Vader’s Fist” was a nickname for sure, as was “501st” for the men that fought under that name, but officially, there were no legions, no battalions, and officially no “501st legion” in the empire

Mustafar - Tying Up Loose Ends is great as well
“By the time we'd made our way to the molten surface of Mustafar, it was apparent that Dellso had been a busy little bug. All by his lonesome he'd found a previously-hidden droid factory, fired it up and cranked out his own private army of battle droids. Needless to say, this got the men of the 501st ... a little hot under the helmet, and not just because of all that lava. Truth be told we'd all had our fill of those gear heads during the war, and we couldn't stomach the thought of going through another one. So we blew them up -- blew up the droids, blew up the factory ... damn near blew up the planet.”

@@jaylowlp6181 In the context of the Star Wars EU at the time BF2 was released, The Clone Wars series had not introduced the control chips. The canon by that time was that the Clone Troopers were fully aware of Order 66's purpose and many had either been informed of its imminent use or that they had managed to deduced it, the biggest clue that they had been briefed at some point during their training that it was inevitable that they'd destroy the Jedi Order through Order 66 was the Clone Trooper journal entry regarding Ki Adi Mundi where they were aware of Palpatine actively deceiving the Jedi by this point and were aware of the baseline work on the Death Star.
With this in mind, the reason they couldn't bare to look her in the eyes is that one what they felt was the most nightmarish battlefield in the Galaxy, she was the most admirable Jedi for going into that battle with them, leading the way and enduring all the nightmares alongside them. The 501st held her in very high regard for this reason, but knew, whether or not they would be the ones to do it, that she would be killed with Order 66 came down, and they likely felt like they were betraying her for all she had done for them during their part of the Felucia campaign... and it was tearing them apart from the inside.

The whole chip thing happened because people are too afraid to admit to themselves soldiers would do this, and have. Clones that have had a huge amount of indoctrination and insulation from the frivolities of the general populace in their raising period don't need chips. On average, the ones who have any appreciable amount of contact with their Jedi commander are officers that have a proven amount of initiative and the mindset to get it done, regardless of if they bond with them or not. Their indoctrination and experiences get invalidated by "lol fritos". "Chip no work" invalidates their personal thinking by which some do become rebels. Do some people really not understand expressions can change because they're not going to enjoy doing it, but needed to be quick about it.
"You know what makes us different from battle droids? We make our own decisions. Our own choices. And we have to live with them too."

We knew it was crazy to fly through that insect nest of a space battle, but we obeyed orders like good troopers. I said goodbye to the rest of the Legion who were remaining on the Star Dreadnaught; I didn’t know it would be the last.”
    ENDOR II - THE FALL
“For years, my dreams have been nightmares, and it all leads back to Endor. Right before my eyes, and the eyes of my platoon, the Executor crashed into the Death Star. All of the 501st, some whom I’ve known since I was created on Kamino, disappeared in a column of fire. When I saw that pillar of flame, my entire sense of self died with the ship. Our pilot immediately brought us to Admiral Gilad Pellaeon’s Star Destroyer, Chimera. As the transport docked in the hanger, none of us could hold the tears back any longer; because the Empire, and all that the 501st fought for was over. We had died in vain.”
    LAST THOUGHT
“The Galactic Empire is truly over. Emperor Palpatine is dead; Lord Vader is dead; the 501st has been dissolved.
I have kept this Journal for years. I will soon join my family; my fellow clones. As brief as it was, the Empire brought order, stability, prosperity, and peace to a chaotic galaxy, and the blood of the fighting men of the 501st Legion was the price.
With this story, my friends still live.”

Ah yes, the good old days. Back when you realized the clone was actually making the decision to pull the trigger, and not reacting to a chip like a battle droid. It helps to show how different they are from the droids, while also showing how much they’re just like them at the same time. They get to decide how to follow the order, and they make that decision without question.
(It also helps create Jedi escapes where the clones thought order 66 was a CIS trick)

    Geonosis: Attack of the Clones
My first day as a member of the 501st... it was hot, it was sandy, chaotic. Nothing at all like the simulations on Kamino. Of course that's pretty much the way it was for all of us, wasn't it? All that breeding, all those years of training... it doesn't really prepare you for all the screaming or the blood, does it? Frankly I'm still amazed we ever made it through the first hour, never-mind the first day.
Incredibly, the 501st survived the crucible of Geonosis, emerging battle-hardened, and ready for whatever the war would throw at us.
    Mygeeto: Amongst the Ruins
In the waning months of the Clone Wars, the 501st faced missions critical to the agenda of Chancellor Palpatine. When we arrived at the bombed out ruins of Mygeeto, our Jedi commander believed we had been sent to take out a droid energy collector. What Ki-Adi-Mundi didn't know however was that our unit of the 501st was really after an experimental Mygeetan power source, that the Chancellor wanted for his superlaser. Keeping Mundi in the dark wasn't easy; the Jedi had become increasingly wary of the Chancellor's doings, and was on the lookout for the slightest hint of treachery. Just like the rest of them though, he never caught whiff of what was really going on, until it was far too late.
The success of the mission on Mygeeto was something of a revelation for the men of the 501st. Suddenly, we realized that the Jedi could be fooled. And if they could be fooled, they could be killed.
    Coruscant: A Desperate Rescue
As the Clone Wars progressed, more and more ground-based legions found themselves pressed into space combat, including the fighting forces of the 501st. For months, every hour of our downtime was spent in the simulator, preparing for the time we would face our enemies from the cockpit of a 170. Finally the day came to earn our wings. The CIS had staged a daring kidnapping of Chancellor Palpatine, and was being escorted from Coruscant by a fleet of Separatist ships. With only a few veteran pilots on-planet, many of the 501st were pressed into service to drive off the Seps, and buy time for a pair of Jedi Knights to rescue the Chancellor.
After disabling the final capital ship, General Kenobi and Skywalker took advantage of the opportunity we'd created and rescued the Chancellor. Took all the credit, too.
    Felucia: Heart of Darkness
It's been said that the 501st got the best of the war. We also got the worst. On Felucia, the Seps dug their metal heels into the muck of that alien hellhole and dared the Republic to come in after them. So we did, only to be met with the month after month of flesh-eating diseases, shrieking nocturnal predators, and other sights that haunt me to this day. Cut off and for all we knew abandoned by our superiors, our only hope was Aayla Secura, our Jedi commander. Without her iron will, none of us would have come out of that mess with our sanity, or our lives. When her death came, I hope it was quick. She earned that much.
When the 501st was finally rotated out of Felucia, Aayla Secura made a point of seeing us off personally, calling us the bravest soldiers she had ever seen. It's a good thing we were wearing helmets, because none of us could bear to look her in the eye.
    Kashyyyk: First Line of Defense
When the Separatists' invasion of Kashyyyk caught the Republic flatfooted, a detachment of the 501st was sent in to stop the bleeding until reinforcements could arrive. It was a textbook suicide mission and we knew it. As we fought our way into Kashyyyk's atmosphere, most of us believed that the only way we'd be getting off this planet was in a body bag.
As the 501st finally broke through the Sep blockade over Kashyyyk, I took a long look back at the battle that continued to rage over the planet, and wondered why so many had to die for a bunch of walking carpets. Then I followed my orders, and turned planetward.
Kashyyyk: A Line in the Sand
When we arrived on Kashyyyk, things were just as bad as we'd feared. The droids had us outgunned, outmaneuvered, and outmanned by a five-to-one margin. What none of us had counted on was the Wookiees. We'd all heard the stories, of course, but we'd never fought next to them, never seen them rip apart a droid with their bare hands. They were magnificent. Even so it was still a suicide mission, at least until Master Yoda arrived. Then it became a battle; a winnable battle.
With the timely arrival of Master Yoda, the 501st was able to hold the line against the Seps on Kashyyyk. We left as heroes. Years later, we'd return as conquerors.
    Utapau: Underground Ambush
In our bones, we knew the war was almost over. The Galaxy held its breath, waiting to see which side would make the final daring move. As fortune would have it, the Republic moved first. After the Chancellor informed the Jedi Council that General Grievous and the Sep leaders were hiding on Utapau, General Kenobi gathered an army large enough to capture three star systems. When the orders reached the 501st, our morale soared. For better or worse, this would be the beginning of the end.
With the death of General Grievous at the hands of General Kenobi, the Utapau raid had broken the back of the Separatists. Under normal circumstances, it would have been a time for celebration. But our next orders put paid to those thoughts.
    Coruscant: Knightfall
What I remember about the rise of the Empire is... is how quiet it was. During the waning hours of the Clone Wars, the 501st Legion was discreetly transferred back to Coruscant. It was a silent trip. We all knew what was about to happen, what we were about to do. Did we have any doubts? Any private, traitorous thoughts? Perhaps, but no one said a word. Not on the flight to Coruscant, not when Order 66 came down, and not when we marched into the Jedi Temple. Not a word.
With the fall of Coruscant and the elimination of the traitorous Jedi, Palpatine's rise to power was complete. In recognition of our service and loyalty to the Emperor, the 501st were placed under the direct command of Lord Vader. Armed with deadly new weapons, blazing new ships, and shiny new armor, our presence let the galaxy know that the days of the Old Republic were well and truly over. We were establishing a new era, an era of order and peace. An era of The Empire.

The battle of Endor was meant to be the death of Rebellion.
Despite our crushing victory on Hoth, there were whispers amongst the men that the rebellion leadership had survived our assault and were biding their time, regrouping and waiting for a moment to strike back at us. Which gave the Empire the perfect opportunity to lure them into a trap.
We spoon-fed the rebels some intel about the second Death Star: it's coordinates, that it wasn't finished and that the emperor and Lord Vader would be there to oversee the final preparations. It was too ripe of a prize for those rebel scum to pass up on. They believed that our forces were spread across the galaxy searching for them.
What we didn't tell them was that we had a massive fleet of Star Destroyers waiting to hem their fleet in, and a legion of the emperor's finest troops protecting the shield generator on the moon's surface. That was us. And, that they would see their end through the battle station's fully operational laser. One by one, they would "become one with the force" as they call it.
Our plan was one that relied heavily on deception, just like with the Jedi all those years ago. The thought made me pause for a brief moment, then I remembered my brothers. Not only the men of the 501st, but all of the clones who had been murdered by those self-righteous terrorists. Seeing their smug faces contort as they were shoved out of that bunker, hands above their heads, was the last great moment of my service to the empire. A few seconds later, all hell broke loose.
No matter what uncomfortable thoughts remain since Coruscant so long ago, I realised our understanding of deception was dwarfed when compared to that of the Rebel Alliance. They had aligned themselves with the native creatures of the planet - the ewoks. They were immediately hostile towards us despite our attempts to be diplomatic towards them. It didn't seem to matter much, we learned long ago that the best diplomat is the muzzle of an E-11 blaster. I'd heard stories, however: tales of troopers not returning to their posts in the night... Nothing but ghost stories to liven up a boring posting. Or so I believed.
When they attacked us on that day of the battle we were caught completely off-guard. They fought us with some of the crudest weapons I've ever seen, bows and stone clubs. I guess fighting for your home planet does something for the spirit, because they were utterly ferocious. It felt like every time I put one down, 2 more would appear. Our commanders had no clue how to fight them, they sent our walkers and scout battalions into the woods to chase the fauna down, and we never saw them again. I shouldn't blame them too much, none of us could have been ready for this.
All of that chaos ended the battle on the ground. Once the generator went down, it felt like all hope was lost. I remember glancing up at the battle that was echoing over our heads in space. For a moment it seemed like the laser was pointing directly at me, but I must have been wrong about it. Then our ears were filled with the death throes of what we had fought for, for so long. The emperor, Lord Vader, all of it suspended in a ball of flames. I will never forget it for as long as I live. I almost wish the death Star had fired on the moon, it would have spared me from that sight, at least.

I don't necessarily mind the chips plot, but I prefer the old story where the Clones were simply following orders. Don't get me wrong, I fully understand why the chips plot is needed to justify how the clones would betray the Jedi after all the events at TCW. BUT, I would prefer if they had written TCW in a different way: The clones as a fanatic defendors of the State they are supposed to defend. They were bred from the beggining to be like that, and it would echo the inspiration for the Empire which is Nazi Germany. Also, it does not mean that they could not build meaninful relationships with the Jedi, it just means that they would see them as mere means to an end. In this hypothetical TCW, the writters could have even given hints sometimes about how the Clones could take their job a bit too far morally speaking, how little they actually cared for the populations they are supposedly defending. Also, just like everything there could be outliers, good and bad. Some clones, like the one speaking here, could be ashamed of order 66 but too afraid and conditioned to speak out, others could be literal psycopaths. And if you think it would be too far fetched just read Anne Frank and understand how "normal people" can become extremists without even realising it.
If you read this far thank you :D

I really liked the idea of a clone building a bond with a Jedi just to backstab them later as a better idea instead of being zombified to do so
As far as I know, they still serve their loyalty to the highest authority which is the chancellor/emperor and those orders they will not question since they knew from the beginning that they would at one point kill the Jedi
I liked that better than whatever is going on now

    • @dennis.edich1998
      @dennis.edich1998 9 месяцев назад

Right. And TCW managed to show the clones build meaningful relationships with the Jedi but did absolutely nothing to show them being absolutely loyal to the republic/Palpatine and that's the show's failure. TCW fits much more as something standalone with just being a " What if" show
