Paul Williams backstory is that he suffered from Sickle Cell Anemia and Depression and that's what lead to his alcoholism and in the end Suicide in 1973 at age 34. Eddie Kendricks was a heavy chain smoker and died from Lung Cancer in 1992 at age 52. David Ruffin died from a drug overdose in 1991 at the age of 50. Melvin Franklin suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and as a result of his overuse of cortisone shots his immune system became open to infections and health problems like diabetes and necrotizing fasciitis. He died from heart failure in 1995 at age 52. Otis Williams is the only original surviving member still performing at age 81 and he owns the rights to the Temptations name!
I wish the movie would have touched more on Paul's sickle cell anemia. That's probably why he was in the hospital in the movie.
@candice446 I was just coming to comment this. I remember watching this as a kid and having sickle cell, I was a bit sad to find out that he was a fellow warrior and the movie never touched on it.

The real Smokey Robinson sang in Melvin's funeral scene as a way to make up for the fact that he wasn't really at his funeral due to him touring at the time. It was his way of saying goodbye to his friend.

David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, some of the greatest voices in R&B history, the voices of the Classic Five Temptations era. Dennis Edwards was an incredible singer too. He had issues that where Otis kicked him out in the 70's and 80's that they did not cover in the movie too.

I’m late but that dude who David’s girl at the time who is Tammi Terrel was hugging Marvin Gaye, he was very close to her and when she died he didn’t really recover she had a grainy tumor unfortunately. And David was also extremely abusive to tammi which they kind hinted at but didn’t go into detail.
The movie makes you think badly of David Ruffin like as a kid he was my least favorite Temptation until I actually started watching videos of the real David Ruffin and he was much more than how this movie portrayed him as. Also David Ruffin is hands down my favorite male vocalist ever!
David did have a pretty solid solo career. Nothing like the temps but he had a few bangers also the temps did kind of diss David in a song called “superstar” 😂
Think about how history repeats itself...back in the 50s & 60's brother's use to be on the corner singing... In the 80's & 90's we was on the corner freestyle Rappin' while one person was beatboxin'...The mind set was different back then it was all about being a gentleman and Real friends took care of each other if you was short on money or need to borrow the car for a date... Eddie Kendricks LEFT The Temptations. He was level headed, he just didn’t like Otis being over controlling. He never had a cocaine problem, he had a smoking problem that led to his lung cancer death in the 1992.

The Tempts continued having huge hits after Shelley became manager. Their last really big one was Papa Was A Rollin Stone in 1972 before Treat Her Like A Lady in 1985.
It's like the musical format and sound changed as far a popular music, Shelley Berger was an example of the time line of this happening.
Fun fact...I guess. Otis and other producers of this movie were successfully sued for some of the stories in this movie. Otis wasn't the most reliable source for this retelling.
Paul Williams was dealing with a sickle cell disease that wasn’t treated at the time, he tried to drink the pain away… the movie make it seem like he was a drunk. He eventually committed suicide

Alcohol nasty asf yeah but when I was bad on it I mainly just drank to forget certain shit and get outta my mind for a bit but I didn’t realize how I would act when I was fxcked up and how it affected the people around me. Addiction is a bxtch and it’s hard to kick it. Folks would tell me “just stop” but it’s sadly not that easy. Sometimes it takes hitting rock bottom and most people can’t handle rock bottom and end up like Paul.

One of my favorite movies, it does get super heavy but i loved your reaction. Paul williams having sickle cell and being an alcoholic is crazy. No telling what affect that had on his body. As someone with sickle cell, i wish it was touched on.

The Temptations wasn’t writing they own hits. The writers /producers got the publishing. The temptations got paid off show money. If they didn’t do shows they didn’t get paid.
