I could write a whole thesis on this movie. The cabs never picking them up is a reference to Black people not being picked up in NYC (and other cities). How the crows are people in the hood who keep down the people who could get out by tearing them down. "You Can't Win" is what people who won't ever be anything will tell you. How the poison poppies represent drugs. How the Emerald City represents upper class Black people (who aren't doing anything to help those in lower classes) obsessed with trends and showing that they have money. Evilene's sweat shop represents slavery and Brand New Day represents emancipation, and then the dropping and destruction of stereotypes, giving people the chance to be their true beautiful selves. This movie speaks so much to the Black experience; its impact can't be overstated.

Wow thanks for the deep dive analysis. I always wondered why the cabs never picked them up.

    • @tenorediawesome
      @tenorediawesome Год назад +19

@@jujubee6030 Yeah, I think it's really well done. They don't even have openable doors - and from the black perspective, that might as well have been true. Even the broken-down junk ones that they weren't trying to catch went off-duty as soon as the main characters get close.

MJ was such a phenomenal actor btw “The Wiz” was literally the first all Black/African American Cast it had a cultural impact especially amongst the black community. The reception of the movie was massive but ironically most were only going to see you guessed it the one & only Michael Jackson shows you how important and huge he was even back in the 70’s etc.😇🙌🏽👑💖💕💫(Also MJ’s vocals during “You Can’t Win” are so phenomenal flawless performance also that DEEP note is one of the deepest notes MJ has hit in his entire career he killed it his range was insane nobody could touch him way too versatile, soulful, powerful yet so angelic as well etc.)

I’m the palest person you’d ever meet and I grew up watching this movie. I loved it more then the wizard of oz. Diana and Micheal are just amazing at their craft. I used to be terrified of Evillene as a child. First time I realized I had a phobia of tiny holes. Idk why, but I absolutely had nightmares she’d get me 😂
This movie really opened my eyes to black actors and how little they were appreciated and made me appreciate this movie all the more because each actor wasn’t a stereotypical white person. Love it a lot

This movie bombed at the box office. Heard MJ “regretted” doing it but who knows if that’s true? Quincy also wasn't happy with doing the soundtrack. But this movie ended up being a classic so that's what counts. And because of it, Quincy became MJ’s producer after asking him too for his first adult solo album Off the Wall and the rest is history. So for that, I love this movie. Hope you upload a part 2.

I saw this in the theater when it first came out, and that subway scene gave me nightmares. Also, when Aunt Em says Dorothy is 24, even though I was only 10, all I could think was "Those were 24 rough years"
Also, you stopped just before one of the moments I was really wanted to see you react to. It's after Dorothy kills the wicked witch, during the song Brand New Day. I don't want to give it away, but you really should go back and say least react to that song/dance. Trust me, it'll be worth it.

"Now I'll never get my brain!"
    "Nor my heart."
    "Or my courage"
"But you don't need them now because you've had them all the time. Scarecrow, you're the one who figured out how to find the yellow brick road and how to destroy Evillene, and every smart move we've made, didn't you? Lion, you wouldn't even give up when Evillene strung you up by your tail. And, Tin Man, you have more heart than anyone I've ever known."
Fun Fact: Joel Schumacher used his connections in the fashion industry to procure the hundreds of costumes used in the Emerald City sequence.
Broadway Enthusiast Fact: The original New York City production of "The Wiz" opened at the Majestic Theater on January 5, 1975, starring Stephanie Mills, ran for 1,672 performances and won the 1975 Tony Awards for the Best Musical and Score and was nominated for Best Book.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Motown Productions bought the rights to the stage show, intending to cast Stephanie Mills as Dorothy. However, Diana Ross lobbied intensely for the role. Everyone, including Motown head and ex-lover Berry Gordy believed that she was too old, but she insisted that the role of Dorothy was ageless (which it is). She also said she would be able to guarantee Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow if she was cast.

Your banter is preventing you from using your senses and your outbursts demonstrate your generation’s need for instant gratification; and I can see that you are intelligent by some of your response. Watch it again after you can take these facts in consideration please. There are life lesson imbedded in this movie. These are the biggest black entertainers in the world all through this movie.

4:39 Snow, turkey, family get-together, no christmas decorations, United States... Thanksgiving?
7:19 Dorothy is Autie Em's niece, not her daughter. Hence *AUNTIE* Em.
9:22 Uh, yeah... It's the Wizard of Oz, right?
10:10 It's not a recreation of Thriller -- The Wiz is from 1978, Thriller wouldn't be made for another 4 years. And yes, she's in a sandbox. Haven't you ever seen a playground?
11:45 No, sixes-and-sevens is a combination that means you lose at craps. Miss One is a bag lady who lives in the streets, runs numbers, plays numbers, etc.
12:49 'scuse me? You do get that the movie is a musical, yes?
15:14 Uh, no. The Wiz was a theatrical flop. But it's gained cult status since.
15:43 Uh, duh, it's supposed to be the bad, black neighborhoods of New York.
16:14 Seriously? You're a back kid from the US whose every second word is "n*gg*r", I'm a mid-forties white guy from across the Atlantic Ocean and of the two of I am the one who's heard of the Projects???
18:39 I do believe that's the cup from a Reese's Peanut Butter cup.
20:52 Uh, duh... he's Michael Jackson... maybe you've heard of him? Before he became the first black man to be surgically altered into a white girl, he was known for being an amazingly talented pop artist who could move like he wasn't being held back by a skeleton.
And yes, the Yellow Brick Road ends just before Harlem. Welcome to New York of the 1970s.
22:19 He's the Tin Man. He was a carney hustler (small time carnival artist) at the Oz edition of Coney Island before it went el foldo (bankrupt). The actor is Nipsy Russell.
23:29 They're supposed to be a barber shop quartet. And their mouths are speakers.
25:36 Because he's stuffed with old newspapers and other paper trash.
26:18 No, Fleetwood coupe Deville. His mama had high ideas! 😆
26:54 Uh, yeah... haven't you ever read "The Wizard of Oz "?
27:15 If your ass is trash?
28:28 Because they're trying to be seductive... they're working girls, get it?
28:37 More like opium. They're the Poison Poppies.
30:03 Seriously? You're watching the second of two songs pointing out he's a _lion_ -- what's this tiger shit?
31:20 Uh... you've never heard New York referred to as The Big Apple?
32:08 Emeralds.... welcome to Emerald City?
33:20 You've got to have seen The Wizard of Oz (1939) to get that one. Dorothy gets driven through Emerald City on a flatbed cart which is drawn by the Horse of a Different Color (a horse that changes color). For The Wiz they reinvented that as this elaborate runway/red carpet scene where the rich of New York do nothing with their lives but flaunt their wealth and curry favor with Oz, the big cheese.
35:41 A TV? A *TV*??? No, he's a microphone!! Mike the Mic, get it??
38:21 No, she killed Evermean, the Wicked Witch of the East. Evilene is the Witch of the West.
40:00 A "sweat shop" is a place where workers are employed at low wages and under bad conditions. The first sweat shops were fabric weaving factories, which were kept hot and damp to prevent thread breakage -- the workers sweated a lot, hence sweat shop.

If you've never heard of Richard Pryor, you should definitely watch some of his stuff. Start with his stand up comedy. If you like Eddie Murphy, you'll like Richard Pryor.

I really don't understand how you are seeing a movie for the time. But you are talking the whole time. How can you get into the movie. Watch the movie, shut up and then give your review.
