    I was gifted the stainless set by an old friend. It's been to the woods many a time and never failed me. I recently found some new old stock on ebay and I bought 6 kits, 4 stainless and 2 alum. for $40. and $30. respectfully. They have never been used. The windscreen was 1975 as were the stoves made by Trangia.

    I had a tricky time lighting my stove in colder conditions once, though stuffing it in your jacket pocket for 30 mins prior to use helps immensely 👍🏻

      +harnamthandi They are tough to light in the cold. There is a winter attachment - www.mec.ca/product/1599-208/trangia-winter-pre-heater/ that helps with pre-heating but as you found out - keeping the burner warm helps alot! Thanks for watching!

    I just bought one of these from Sportsman's Guide military surplus for $17. I got myself some Denatured alcohol to fuel it with. The stove has the triple crown mark too, so this baby is authentic. I will try it out now that I have watched this tutorial.

    Good video. If an alcohol stove can work in those conditions, it can work anywhere! One question though. How often have you used it as a wood burner? A number of You Tubers have reported that the aluminium windshield softens when it's been used this way. Have you had this problem?

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  8 лет назад +1

      +oldigger I tend to hang the pot over a fire like in this video ruclips.net/video/oWqn8KppdXY/видео.html than use the wind shield as a container for the fire. You can get them in stainless steel if you think you would do that alot. Little bit harder to find and cost more but I love this stove. A replacement is very cheap also. Thanks for watching!

    You can prime the burner by pouring some fuel in the grove on the ring of the burner and lighting it... just make sure that has burned out before pouring any fuel in the burner itself!

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  4 года назад

      Yup - That works - There is also a cold weather priming cup and primer paste that will preheat the burner. I find keeping the fuel in your pocket for a while also help!

  • @festihead
    @festihead 5 лет назад +2

    thanks the great video, I did miss the part where you fueled it though? just got one and can't wait to use it. What's the best fuel? meths? I put a dragon fuel block in mine and it burned for ages :) I do have the BCB crusader and like it but ruined the plastic cup putting it on the stove lol and this was recommended...

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Andy - depends on the temperature. Anything above -10c and normal meths is fine. Below that temperature you have to take care to insulate the burner from the ground and pre-heat it also. You also need to keep the meths warm too to make it burn efficiently. Once it gets down to below -20c I just use sticks in the bottom of the windshield and have a little stick stove - works perfectly :)

    i've had one of these old swedish military cooksets since they came out on the american surplus market in the 1990s, so i've had a few years to play with it. i think i paid $15 for mine at a local surplus store and it looked like it had never been used. the burner is slightly larger in diameter than a trangia and the cap is not a screw cap, it has 3 bayonet lugs but is the same diameter as a trangia and the burner has the same number of holes. so it holds a bit more fuel than a trangia. i've found that this bigger burner works the best if you fill it halfway with fuel, with too much fuel it is very slow to heat up and burns cold.. the biggest design problem with this set is the stove base, which has a large hole in it so the burner has to sit directly on the ground. why they did that, i have no idea... i suspect there is a military gas burner that the base can rest on? so i took a small piece of closed-cell foam from an old sleeping pad and cut out a circle, wrapped it in aluminum tape and that's what i use to insulate the burner from the ground, which improves performance. it packs inside the set and also keeps the burner from rattling around. mine has aluminum pans which is ok, but stainless would be easier to clean. overall it's a pretty good system that is easier to pack due to it's flatter shape, but a trangia 27 is more useful and lighter to carry, but doesn't pack as well. the military set is heavy, but that's because it's a military set designed to endure extremely rough handling under combat conditions. everything is thick metal and not easy to dent or deform. i mostly use mine as an extra water boiler when car or canoe camping, it's far too heavy for backpacking.

      Hi Marzsit - Trangia made the burner thats in the Swedish Military Stove, so there is no surprise its very similar. I suspect they made it larger so it wasn't interchangeable with their commercial line of products for economic reasons (perhaps?). There is a winter kit for the commercial trangia that consists of a plate and a clip on base that allows you to pre-heat the burner for cold weather. I'm sure someone could rig up a similar system for the military burner. There is also a stainless steel version of the stove available but they are rare - I'd love yo get one 😄 All in all - for the money this is one of the best stove kits around - and as you say - if you don't back pack with it! Thanks for the great comment! Michael!

      Well that puts a new perspective on the stove! I like using it over an open fire - the alcohol burner is poor in the cold but works well in the warmer months. Thanks for the comment!

  • @JimAltis
    @JimAltis 7 лет назад

    'Do not keep the alcohol and burner in the can, you might get foodpoisoning' (but everyone did that anyway). and in cold weather you should have the burner near the body to keep it varm, its easier to get the burner going then. FYI: The can also fits a plastic 'kåsa' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kåsa nice video :)

      Yea - I've been down that road and I'm not a great fan. For the money the Swedish Army Trangia is way better and more practical. If you want to go lighter go with the TOAKS titanium pots with a bail handle. That would be my advise.

  • @psprucestream6683
    @psprucestream6683 7 лет назад +2

    I guess you already know you do no use the handle on the big pot correct? (you could check some other reviews, some of them got it right =) ) The hook should be in the front loop so that you can poor without burning yourself.
    To answer some questions. No they are no longer produced and can not be bought as new ones. They were made in one aluminium version and on steel version. The Alu version is ofc less weight but the SS one can take more heat (over open fire) "Svea" lid and Trangia lid is the same and fit. The new Trianga bruner is however stuffed with some sort of filt material to start up better. If the lid is cracked I would buy a complete new burner from Trangia. Read what Cuut said about storage of the alcohol and the burner =)

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  7 лет назад +1

      I used the hook on the big pot through the loop - see 2:27 - thanks for the information about the manufacture - I would still like to own the stainless steel version, if I can find one! :D Thanks for commenting!

    • @psprucestream6683
      @psprucestream6683 7 лет назад

      Sorry missed that.
      One tip, if it is cold and you dont have hade the burner in a warm pocket it is possible according to SoldF manual to pour some alcohol also in the ring outside the burner then you light it same time as inside and the burner will get going quicker.
      The SS kitchen has increased in price. I bough my last SS stove here: www.xn--hglandskompaniet-mwb.se/kompett-kok/433-1
      369SEK without transport cost. They can be contacted here:
      www.xn--hglandskompaniet-mwb.se/kundtjanst
      It might be advisable to ask them to check the burner lid for cracks since young ppl in the army that used these had a tendency to turn the lid on to hard, tension during long time storage then make the lid crack.
      Happy hunting =)

    I was out using the same kit today in -3 degrees Celsius. I had both the fuel (meths) and the stove in my pocket warm before being removed to use. I struggled to the get meths lit at first. Once lit I tried to boil 1ltr of water. It never came to a full boil and used a full stove full of fuel. Any advise on using it in cold weather ?

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Pa62218, they can be a pain at lower temperatures for sure. Trangia sells a preheater for spirit burner (602101) & a winter attachment (500021) (trangia.se/en/burners-and-burner-accessories/). The winter attachment is not worth the investment - but the pre-heater does work. Check to see if the burner you have is compatible - you can tell by indentations on the body of the burner about half way down. You can always make one - it just holds the burner up so you light some fuel on a pad beneath to preheat the burner. The other key is to make sure the burner is on something and not the cold ground. I've used sticks to lift the burner off the snow and the performance does improve. However, when it gets cold enough alcohol burners become very inefficient (below -15c). With the Swedish army stove you can just build a small fire in the bottom of the windscreen inplace of the burner or suspend the pot over a larger fire. Hope that helps! Michael

      Hi Richard, I've used and owned real Trangia stoves for over 30 years. My current Trangia is a hacked 27k (I swapped the alu pans for non-stick but keeps the original base and windscreen) thats over 22 years old. I use the term Trangia in this instance as most people will recognize the style of burner and it was produced by Trangia. Personally, for my outdoor use I find the military stove provides me with many more options for cooking than the civilian version. Thanks for commenting!

      I've had and used the civilian Trangia sets for about 30 years. I currently have a 27k hybrid set (swapped the pans to non-stick) that I've owned 20+ years. The brass on the military version is actually thicker and I have added a simmer ring :D. The main benefit of the military version is you can hang the pot over a fire and cook that way too - something you can't do with the civilian version with out modding them. For wild camping in Canada the military version is more versatile but I love them all to be honest - just a great system. :) Thanks for commenting!
