- How Brutal was Medieval Law Really?
Law and order in medieval Europe have for a long time been a subject characterized by cruelty and barbarism. Hangings, beheading, and corporal punishments are often been thought to be the go-to punishments given to people guilty of even the most minor of transgressions.
But is this depiction of medieval law accurate?
Since the late twentieth century, historians have been critically studying the subject of law and order in medieval Europe and revealed a reality of crime and punishments in the middle ages that is more nuanced and less dark than commonly portrayed. What did the medieval legal landscape look like? What legal procedures did medieval courts use, and was execution really as common as generally believed?

geez only 19 views? this is really well made!
This was a great video, always enjoy how well structured they are
Keep up the good work sir.
If you are interested gaol is pronounced like jail, the English just spell jail in a crazy way. Loved the video, very interesting.
Thanks for the tip. I usually use Google translate to get a sense of how a word is pronounced, I guess it may have been the American-English translation.
@@quillinkhistory9539 Consider using a dictionary's pronunciation guide instead. Not even American dictionaries endorse a pronunciation with a hard G.
I was starting to miss your content, although you made an excellent comeback!
Was just thinking its been a while since you uploaded!
super interesting topic
Thanks man! Last two months have been very hectict and I'm happy that I finally managed to finish the video. :)
The information in your video helped me plot my short story. Thank you!
I'd like to read it!

Didn’t get notified. You must be doing something good!! Keep it up, it’s an excellent channel!!
Thanks for the info. I'm curious, when you are saying that you don't get any notification, are you refering to not getting a notification from the clock icon?
Quill & Ink History exactly.
Only 48 minutes late. Yeah I was wondering about this, if the law was so unjust would the Peasants not keep Revolting? Especially during the Early Modern Period. Edit: Also it is point not dot mate, when it comes to percentages.
As always fabulous presentation, information that is important to know as we face go through our current apparent partisan or socially important persons lienancy.
Wow! Thank you for this! I've been wathing lots of videos on the Medieval Ages since yesterday, it seems like the picture that we usually get of those times is exaggerated. Surely those were very hard and unpleasant times to live in, but they weren't complete wackos either.
Cool, there is lots of things I didnt know. The fact that the inquisition was a real improvement on law is eye-opening. It shows that history is written by the victors. I only heard in school how they oppressed protestants and reformist an how cruel they were.
This video only addresses certain civil legal proceedings in certain areas of Britain. If you were convicted of witchcraft or were a Jew or an apostate you not only died horribly, but you were gratuitously tortured beforehand in most parts of Europe. The Inquisition slaughtered tens of thousands of people. It was no improvement despite the marshmallow fluff the narrator is describing.
Another myth-buster... Thanks for dissecting Popular myth from history. God bless you
My day is better when Quill & Ink has posted :)

But can you please make a video on Skanderbeg? I previously commented you but I did not get any clear answer. But your videos are mind-blowing
Thanks for the kind comment. I'm currently have a lot of video ideas that I'm going to work on in the common months so I'm afraid a video on Scanderberg will not come out any time soon.
Hopefully this will help my history assesment!
As I understand it, gaol is an old English spelling of jail. I’ve certainly only ever heard it pronounced ‘jail’
That’s quality history content
What do you think of the idea that execution over centuries gradually purged the European gene pool of antisocial tendencies that might have been more common, say, in the Viking Age?
Interesting video
Thanks :)
Quill, your thumbnail has a spelling mistake! Great video though
Thanks for the info Barris, gonna correct it when I come home tomorrow. Btw, will you come back to RUclips any time soon? Miss your videos and dark humor.
@@quillinkhistory9539 working on it! But life is giving me no free time haha
THANK YOU
"Gaol" is pronounced as "Jail" - in fact, it's just an old spelling for that word.

Gaol is pronounced Jail.... I know that it's not your native tongue but it'd be nice if you'd look the pronunciation up from time to time. I've no problem when your accent is the reason for the misspronunciation but when you're actually saying rye wrong word it mixes up the information you are trying to present. Especially when you do such good research and make such complete and good videos it seems a shame that something so small as asking a native speaker to tell you the correct way to say a word could make it less jarring to watch and help you get the information you've found over.
Thx for the info, I was not aware of that.
Just trying to help out with the RUclips algorithm!
Thanks man, its very appreciated! :D

Im guessing you are not native English speaker? Your pronunciation is different. City as "Si tee". Not just that. Numerous other words
No matter how well-researched and clearly structured, mispronouncing key words like 'gaol' seriously impairs your credibility.
Sounds like Iran and CCP China combined together 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thank God, I don’t live those countries and the like. Thank you Mum and Dad in heaven! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
