  • What was Denmark's role in the Northern Crusades?
    In this video, we're going to cover a lesser-known part of crusades history, the Danish conquest of Rügen. This part of the northern crusades' history is seldom given much attention in medieval history or the history of the baltic crusades. However, the Danish crusades against the wends is an important part of Danish history and also an essential part in Denmark becoming a medieval great power in northern Europe.
    The topics that will be covered in this crusades documentary are the historical context the danish crusades took place in, how the danish crusaders and their Wendish adversaries viewed warfare, as well as the Danish conquest of the pagan city of Arkona and the island of Rügen.

    Oh look at that
    I'm Danish, did not expect this.
    I'm familiar with the crusades under the name the "Baltic" crusades. Super cool and very unknown.

    Great video! Can't wait for all these crusades videos to be in an hour long doc format, also when it comes to text on various backgrounds I find it helpful to add a drop shadow to the text so that it's easier seen, like henry the lion at 1:27, also its great to see you step up your animation game

      Thanks for the tip! Ive been trying to work more with shadows in my recent videos, but I'm having a loot of problems with it. When dropping shadows on text, do you need a lamp for that?

    • @AncientAccounts
      @AncientAccounts 4 года назад

      @Quill & Ink History No, assuming you have after effects its just called "Drop Shadow" in the effects panel it gives you basic control over the opacity of the effect, colour of the shadow, the softness of the colour and the distance of the shadow from the text layer

    The wars between the Wends and nearby Christian states were fought for centuries, and the Wendish Crusade was merely the culmination of those conflicts. Incidentally, the majority of tribal Wendish confederations would've had no issue with being vassals of the Holy Roman Empire if it weren't for the aggressive efforts of Germanization and Christianization of some of its dynasties, which then caused the Great Slav rising which reverted all of the previously successful efforts of Christianization and Germanization of Pagan Slavs for the next 200 or so years.
    Also, the Wendish crusade wasn't merely Danish, but German, Polish and Danish, most of the crusading efforts and forces were from the Holy Roman Empire.
    The Pomeranians retaliated for the destruction of Arkona by destroying Konungahella in the final stage of the crusade, it was the largest city in Northern Europe at the time.

    In all three episodes about the Northern Crusades, the fact of the movement of the Euro-aggression of the Northern Crusades against Orthodox Russia is silent, although everyone has heard about the Ice Battle of 1242, but no one knows that the Ice Massacre was only a small episode of two centuries of the Euro-aggression of the Northern Crusades against Orthodox Russia along the entire western border of Russia, starting from the Carpathians and up to the Finnish The bay...

The last one Atterdag father to Queen Margrethe 1 who also was the queen in the Kalmar Union, but im sure you know that :) I Always been fascinated by the Valdemar kings

    Wends were outnumbered so was impossible that Danes could fight them plus many danes were pagans too and they fled to wendish land to live peacefully with Wends
