- Who was Gustav Vasa, and why is he an important character in Swedish History?
In this two-part series, we’re going to cover the life and legacy of Gustav Vasa. We will start by examining the final days of the Kalmar Union, and the rise of king Christian II of Denmark. Then we will cover Gustav Vasa's rebellion against the Danes and the creation of an independent Swedish kingdom.
Afterward, we’re going to learn about his 37-year long reign, and how he during his kingship transformed Sweden from a late-medieval semi-feudal kingdom to the modern state which in the early seventeenth century would become the Swedish Empire.

@@ThiasJ his reforms brought major changes to the realm which modern day Finland was part of. He's one of the better remembered Swedish rulers over here, I would say.

Of Course. Finland was an integral part of the Swedish Kingdom for six centuries. I visited Finland during my student time in Stockholm. I love your country, especially the language! Finnish language is fabulous.

Interesting. I agree completely, Gustav Vasa is the quintessential Machiavelli, truly a pragmatic chap.
Unlike Danish king Kristian and (specially) Spanish king Philip II (a tad later) who embarked on every war that came their way, ruining themselves in the process, he was diligent enough to remain consistent with a fundamental purpose. Namely, to unite Sweden, transform it into a functioning modern state and reform the military to protect the kingdom from neighbouring powers.
The stylistic differences with King Kristian had nothing to do with being at all merciful to his opponents (we are talking about the late Middle-Ages), but with employing violence effectively rather than systematically. Again, in accordance with Machiavelli's postulates.
I enjoyed your even handed presentation. His use of propaganda as a tool was quite interesting, nice work.

Wow, never mind on the praise this user previously gave Gustav Vasa in the previous video and before then up until this point. He double-crossed Lubeck and the Hanseatic League and became as much of a pragmatist as George Washington, attacking his own people in order to maintain centralized power! He started off well enough, succeeding Sten Sture and taking down the Kalmar Union and Christian of Denmark, but then he goes and allies with the same people who killed his father and his people to take down free traders just for money and power? How many more "Anakin Skywalker falls" must people see before realizing that "government corrupts, and absolute government corrupts absolutely"?! 15:41 in, a Machiavellian leader is never what any imaginary country (which is every country, as communal property doesn't work and private property is pre-political) "needs". The free market fixes itself, and what IS "needed", perhaps now more than ever before, is "sound money", such as in the form of artificially-scarce, anonymous-by-default cryptocurrencies backed up by "Polycentric Law".
