As a child I remember being given a ladybird book of trains in which there was a photograph featuring a Swiss cog rail locomotive climbing the Brienz Rothorn railway, everything about the photograph enthralled me, the little engine was climbing at an impossible angle, the track was on a very narrow ledge and the scenery was simply stunning. But at some point they realized that it works better together. My wooden bench will also be finished today. Get a photo. Best regards from Hans and Cheers 🍻🇦🇹.
Hello Hans, thank you again for your help with this video. Whilst I was editing it I logged onto a number of web-sites that gave a brief history of the Rigi Mountain railways, the most interesting fact being that the line out of Vitznau was Europe’s first mountain cog railway. The world’s first cog railway was not a mountain railway, it was the Middleton Railway between Middleton and Leeds in West Yorkshire, England, I believe the world’s first mountain cog railway was the Mount Washington Cog Railway in the USA. Whilst there was competition on Mount Rigi in the early days, it wasn't long before the railways, aerial cable cars and ski lifts realized the potential of working together, today they are all marketed as "Rigi". One non-standard railway did close and its route is now a spectacular footpath in summer and a ski run in winter. European mountains are among the best in the World. This fascinating video captures their very essence and beauty, and allows us to experience the adventure when we will never be able to physically see it in person. Tim's leading comments are thorough and informative and add to the historical significance of the railways. While watching I was wondering why 2 trains were so close to each other traveling the same direction on the same route.
Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. Your question as to why 2 trains are travelling close together on the same route is one I have asked myself, as it is a common practice on Swiss mountain railways. I typed into Google - why do Swiss mountain railways often run two trains close together instead of running them as one longer train? I didn't find the answer I was looking for, although it is worth noting that many Swiss mountain railways are starting to introduce new conventional multiple unit trains, it is also happening on this railway. The new trains have advantages and disadvantages, from an operating point of view longer trains require less staff than two shorter trains, from the passengers point of view it is becoming more difficult to enjoy the same view as the driver. I will make a guess that modern technology and higher passenger numbers have made multiple unit running on mountain railways a practical proposition, whereas one hundred or more years ago when many of these railways were built the technology and passenger numbers made shorter or single unit trains the choice of the day. My conclusion may well be wrong, if someone knows the answer, please share it with us.

Absolutely beautiful video, but why no comments? This is not a common train and a lot of people most likely have seen this for the first time, therefore some comments would be appreciated!
Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the views. I add captions to the videos, such as the station names and I also give links in the video description for those wanting to know more about the railway. I don't add a commentary because it is not popular (most of my viewers don't speak English as their first language) and I'd also have to do more research which I simply don't have time to do, this is just a hobby, I would like to spend more time researching, shooting and editing videos, sadly it doesn't put food on the table, I rely on my day job for that.
That Christmas holiday does look tempting, but I'd never get my wife to go with me, she loves the sun and Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without her. I think Rigi will look awesome, covered in snow with people enjoying winter sports. My trip to Poland next month has been postponed and my next RTC trip is to Germany in January 2023, I bet that'll be cold. I looked at some of your videos, that coffee pot locomotive reminded of the one we should have had for our trip on the Rigi railway. When you get back from your Christmas trip, please post a video showing the snow covered mountains, I promise to be jealous.

Hi, the stations were quiet because we were an unscheduled special train, so there were not many people waiting for service trains, as for the dogs, I didn't see many and those I did see were little dogs on leads, not much bigger than a cat. Hi Robert, I love the Swiss lakes and mountains, there is a cog railway to the top of many peaks and a genuine paddle steamer on most of the lakes, everywhere is easy to reach by train. Today was another very hot and dry day here on England's South Coast; it's getting on for two months since we had rain apart from one thunder storm over three weeks ago.

I am assuming the lineside feature at 25:38 is a haystack, but why is there a pole down the middle? Anyone?
Hi "Yes" it is a haystack, the hay will be used to feed cattle in the winter. I searched the internet to try and find out a little more, there are plenty of photos of Swiss haystacks, but not a lot of information, please click on this link - www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1NDCM_enGB719GB719&sxsrf=ALiCzsYekIWRGLUi4GUCN386tfovG65XkA:1660650964095&source=univ&tbm=isch&q=swiss+mountain+hay+stack&fir=mC37e4okd6Kf0M%252CM9cIILaVWrDW0M%252C_%253BNMA-Jx0InWuLhM%252CRsaxU46gI79biM%252C_%253BZ1BG-u5dgMROMM%252CsXuqPTAHt9KdkM%252C_%253Bf8Xpl889vRHlfM%252Cx2iLQdL2llYJiM%252C_%253B1OIPWVnjeUb6HM%252CFEOF_XNmyPcrLM%252C_%253BABl667_jfVm5SM%252CNjR2w4CGOIX59M%252C_%253BY8g5I1MrSFxAnM%252Cx2iLQdL2llYJiM%252C_%253Bc1yYc_xbbYl7_M%252CRsaxU46gI79biM%252C_%253BnyiT-8-Vhs9EiM%252C7vketi5B1NsL1M%252C_%253BEUYnhq6N1ghPRM%252CTrH0wSju3RxOgM%252C_&usg=AI4_-kTFQLmjUUpasKUmRazIMQNUdHewHg&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwib9732psv5AhVNasAKHT6pBCIQ7Al6BAgCEFE&biw=1920&bih=937&dpr=1
Wishing I'd made the journey and not let the steam ban put me off. Booked with RTC at Christmas so hopefully get there with winter scenery

Hi, Switzerland is a magical place, railways to the top of many of the mountain peaks, the sound of cow bells in the background and glorious scenery. I look forward to sharing more views of this wonderful country over the coming months.
Onde fica esse local. Muito lindo
Olá este vídeo foi feito perto de Luzern, Suíça.
Not even a lonely dog crossing the Railway line ?how this is possible? No passengers are available in the stations. Good video.
Congratulations 🎊 👏 💐 GREETINGS FROM BANGALORE KARNATAKA INDIA 🇮🇳 ❤️
Hi, the stations were quiet because we were an unscheduled special train, so there were not many people waiting for service trains, as for the dogs, I didn't see many and those I did see were little dogs on leads, not much bigger than a cat. Wishing you all the best in Bangalore from my home country, England.
Dommage qu'il n'y ait pas la montée. Peut être à suivre bientôt????? Merci.
Pas de montée cette fois, peut-être lors de ma prochaine visite en Suisse.

In case your breaks fail how do you address that?
The middle rail is a cog rail (Rack rail) that locates with a cog on the train. The train is fitted with several different failsafe mechanisms to stop the train in the event of an emergency.
@@Timsvideochannel1 thank you for answering.

Where are the cows?
I didn't see any either, maybe they had all gone to be milked.

Hi tim, Would have to be one of the most scenic places in the world ,Are you still in a drought in uk cheers bob.👍🤠😁😇🍺
I keep jumping into a good size paddling pool to cool down and I've just returned from an hour and half walking in the surf on my local beach. Cheers. Tim. 🙂🍺.

Very slow speed! Which country?
Hi, this railway is located in Switzerland.

I hope you enjoyed the ride. I'm triple jabbed, but that didn't stop me from catching the virus.
