Queue the Band-Maid fans (including myself). They just wrapped up their second US tour, 14 shows in less than a month, about 2hrs a show, slight song changes at every show, and killed it.
Overall, the women of Japan are on a warpath. Lots of killer all female and female fronted bands. Not that the guys are slacking, lots of top notch dudes out there on the grind as well.
For groups that are not all women, maybe try Ningen Isu or Sokoninaru. Or you know, there are like 100+ other Band-Maid songs and they're all great.
You boys are in it now...... this pigeon hole is very deep and you have a lot of catching to do, which is not a bad thing. They are heavy rock, not metal, but can bring the metal.....but also bring a tear to the eye with their ballads. Stick with them because these girls are for real and crazy talented....Enjoy!

Thanks for doing a Band Maid reaction and welcome indeed, to the Pigeon Hole (yeah, there's a story about that, but it can wait). All five of these ladies are immensely talented and more importantly, spend a lot of time actively challenging themselves and the other band members to do more and get even better. When Kanami (lead guitar and composer) asked Akane (drums) what her top BPM was, she said "around 200" so Kanami wrote the song at 220 as a challenge (Black Hole). After founding the band, Miku (rhythm guitar, backing vocals and main lyricist) decided that she didn't have the right voice for the sound she wanted and they went out and brought Saiki (lead vocals) into the band and Miku asked Kanami to teach her to play the guitar so she could contribute more. I hope that you decide to do another reaction for them in the near future. If you do, you will have a wide range or choices and recommendations. The classic starting point is Domination (live), though Blooming (MV) and Play (live) are also great options. Personally, I love the two song combo Manners-Black Hole from their online concert. It's live and a great contrast that shows what they are all capable of.

This band is at its best LIVE! I just saw them twice last weekend and they were amazing. This is a rabbit hole worth your time. Best straight up Rock Band period.

I wasn't into the song at first but hearing it live in the Aftershock was definitely a shock for me. The song just sounds so much better live than the video shows.

Welcome to the Maidiacs, guys!! Believe it or not, that's just the tip of the huge iceberg of musical greatness from this incredible group of ladies and the more you hear from them and get to know them, the more you'll love 'em! I just saw them at Aftershock and in SF, both INCREDIBLE shows!

Amazingly, they are a true live band. I recommend watching the live videos. And really, it would be great if you could go to one of their live shows. Their US tour ended yesterday, with 13 shows and about 20,000 people in attendance.
The band has been performing in small venues since their debut, when their appeal point was that they are cute young ladies, and it is clear that their talent has been awakened as a result. Next year will mark 10 years since the band started.
Their definitive live performance is Domination Live. Worth checking out

They are terrific live. Best rock genre band on the planet that can be totally commercial sounding or heavy enough to melt your face. They create their own music. Thrill is their first video from years ago. Watch DOMINATION live after that and then anything they do, it's all excellent. They brought me back to rock.
We understand the confusion...Band-Maid is a genre. 120+ tracks and only a few are good...the rest are GREAT!

Now for what I term the Band-Maid Info-Dump;
Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition.
Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well)
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!

Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan.
Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited)
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their RUclips channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.

Just saw them in Chicago last night. Have been to loads of shows since 1985. Band Maid have the best fan interaction and joy performing I have ever seen. You need to see them live.

Great first reaction guys and we all saw the smiles, this is Band-Maid and their music is so good it makes you smile. For almost three years they have not been able to play live and now they just finished a 14 city tour (sold out all but one) and left each city in a smoldering wreak. Next song, just pick any live from their channel.
The best Rock Band in the world, and even better Live. Kanami, lead guitar, is the prime composer. Miku Kobato, rhythm guitar, band founder, & spokes pigeon. MISA, bass and Akane, drums create the bass and drums fills from the basic music from Kanami. Saiki, main vocals, works with Miku on the lyrics. They have complete control of their music through to the order of the songs on their albums.They have been touring the US since 2016.
Their Xmas Tour de Force acoustic online concert is now on YT, It's on the DukeSkyGuy channel and runs 1 hr 15 min. Basically they took their rock songs and reworked them into acoustic songs!!

All of us Maidiacs have like, 40 songs in our top 10 list (seriously).

Thanks again from Japan 有難う 💛。 They have just finished their US tour (13 concerts + 1 festival) and "Influencer" was played in 11 shows 😍. You can find numerous fan-cam videos capturing their performance live. This MV was filmed at a famous and old stone quarry (Ishikiri-Sanmyaku) located in Ibaraki prefecture, north of Tokyo. Kanami, the lead guitarist, was very scared when she stood near the brink of the cliff but she could defy the fear once cameras started to capture her playing scene. [source : Gekirock News]. Saiki is singing "Hunky Dory" repeatedly. It sounds to me, an aged Japanese, a kind of word play or pun. This phrase is very close to Japanese expression "Honki (本気) Dori (or Tori 撮り)" that means 「本気」= serious, earnest, sincere" and 「撮り」= filming, recording, image capturing". This is cynically suitable 😄 to what influencers do, isn't it? In the rap part Saiki is also singing "Always that one-upping contest, chit-chat chit-chat". "Chit-chat" sounds like "chicchai ちっちゃい" in Japanese. That means "tiny, trivial, frivolous, worthless etc." Miku's lyrics includes a lot of word play and Miku admitted she did it on purpose in an interview [source : Spice Oct.7] "Influencer" was premiered (live debut) on Sep.7 at Zepp DiverCity Tokyo in Band-Maid's pre-US concert. Just so you know, I witnessed it at the venue ヽ(^o^)丿.

I just saw them again on the 28th. Saw them in 2019 pre-covid. Both were still musically the best shows i've ever been to, and i'm in my 30's now.

So, for Band-Maid, I discovered them about a year and half ago it was 5 years late - I know of no better rock band on planet earth 🌍 today.
Sadly, I wasn’t able to see them live on their just completed 2022 US Tour.

Not only are they superb musicians, they are the most lovable women I have ever seen. Most women doing rock try to imitate their male counterparts. Bandmaid doesn't. Their performance on stage is very feminine, but never cheap or sexualized . On the other hand, their drummer, Akane, does the act of eating a banana as fast as she can on stage. She gets away with it, because it happens the most innocent way possible.
Their innocence is the reason why the audience stays as gentlemanly as possible when these very desirable women take the stage and do their thing. Personally, I don't think I ever saw this kind of interaction between a female band and their audience. It's like they subtly invite us men to be as respectable as we can to these beautiful women. And how could we refuse.
That bass live is incredible. Misa should get a lifetime endorsement from Fender Bass and Orange amps and do paid seminars on how to dial in that earthquake thump. Jason Newsted trolls Lars with videos of Misa playing captioned; "You lied! It is possible!", followed with a middle finger emoji.
This is the mother load of Japanese rock bands. They have countless songs that are good. I suggest you follow this path and you will be impressed. If you want to continue to be impressed, check out the band on the second half - three "mature" guys....their band is Ningen Isu. They are simply amazing live (as BAND-MAID is!). First song to listen to is either Heartless Scat or Nemahage.
One ok rock's songs are also worth to try. They are almost the most popular band in Japan right now.
Maidiac for life here, but since they literally don't have a bad song you can just about pick anything, especially live. You will get tons of suggestions for them, Lovebites and Nemophila and they will all be great. I'm going to propose a few others for you since the Japanese rock rabbit hole is very, very deep.

You honestly cannot go wrong though. Consistency is a rule with Band-Maid even as they leap from genre to genre.

This is off their latest EP. I suggest rolling a bit as well, because live is where they shine. Songs like "Play" Official live or "Domination" or "Real Existence" again Live. Once you see them live it will be hard to go back to listening to a MV of the ladies... But you have to because we don't have top quality live videos yet of songs like "Warning" or "Blooming".
I was really looking forward for you stumble upon that. Great reaction, I throw some suggestion into the mix: Also from band Maid Manners-Black Hole official live video. Or something acoustic. A couple of other band from Japan: 1) Polkadot stingray, for some rock softer and jazzier, a good start could be stratocaster stripes 2) Tricot, for something Mathier, End roll could be a nice starting song 3) If you want to go pop and wierd, an actual girl group but damn interesting is Atarashii Gakko, and you could star with Koi Geba.
