That’s because McLaren wanted Honda to make a engine that fitted in their ridiculous coke bottle car, whereas Red Bull made the car around the Honda engine. McLaren is hugely at fault here.
@@fede1462 Actually the blame is split. 2015 was Honda's fault and 2016 and 17 were McLaren's fault. The McLaren was actually quite good in the corners in 2015, but absolutely shit on the straights. For the other seasons McLaren refused to adapt.
I'm amazed on how all Hermann Tilke' circuits have exactly the same corners here and there. It is the pinnacle of the lack of imagination and personally. This guy helped to make F1 worse.
At that time, Honda returned to f1 in 10 years or so, they didn't had that much data to make decent engine and mclaren messed up their chassis. Both fault.
McLren made ridiculous demands at Honda with the size, and failed to realize their car wasnt the best either (nobody knows why they always claimed/thought to have quite the best car on the grid..), as much as Honda failed to put their foot in to make the engine how they want/need it to be like they then did with Red Bull. Red Bull gave Honda a year with Toro Rosso to freely do what they need to do and adapted their car to it.

Why did honda struggle with McLaren yet be competitive with redbull? So the problem was with the mclaren side of the partnership
At that time, Honda returned to f1 in 10 years or so, they didn't had that much data to make decent engine and mclaren messed up their chassis. Both fault.
Because mclaren told honda to make an engine to fit a SIZE ZERO concept on their first year back in F1 in a very complicated set of engine regulations
