Wow! What an intro this was. What a production! I did not start watching and following the NBA until the mid-90's, years after the NBA on CBS ended its run. Wish I got to see these games during CBS' run, though the NBA on NBC was also great. Both CBS and NBC's NBA coverage were miles better than ABC/ESPN's.
I call this the Death Star star opening because the way that the sequence pans across the live-action footage in the backdrops, looks like how the X-Wings in the first Star Wars movie flew through into the trenches of the Death Star.
I love how Hubie Brown is calling this game with sound analysis as an old guy, and who would have thought that in another 30 years, he would still be doing it? Hubie is a legend.
The Lakers had like 8 days off between sweeping the Suns in the conference finals and the start of this series. Instead of getting some more valuable rest, Pat Riley decided to hold a bunch of hard practices that got Scott hurt, and Magic later on. That was the start of him losing the Lakers locker room. When the Suns beat them in the playoffs easily the next season, he was out.
Yeah. Brent was one of the best to do it. What was Brent’s famous four-word sentence? Guess. He always said this at the beginning of every NFL pregame show, “You are looking live!”
The first NBA Finals game at The Palace? Yes, it was...but they had played two regular seasons and playoffs there since the venue opened in 1988. As I write this in January 2020, The Palace at Auburn Hills is scheduled to be demolished this month, with the Pistons having played at the new Little Caesars Arena since the 2017-18 season.
Compared to the other NBA arenas that opened in 1988, they're either demolished (Charlotte Coliseum, Miami Arena), going to be replaced in the next few years (Sleep Train Arena), or in need of major renovations (Bradley Center). Hell, even the Orlando Arena, which had opened shortly before this particular NBA Finals, no longer exists.
The series that lead to the mutiny that ran Riley out of town. He was responsible for both injuries (both hamstrings) to Magic and Scott. Changed the series. Probably cost them another chip. Locker room revolt followed.
Tubewings, I totally agree wholeheartedly. I have been to Quicken Loans Arena, Wells Fargo Center, and the United Center, but to this day, the Palace of Auburn Hills, in my opinion, is still the gold standard for arenas, architecturally. The seating bowl is still the best anywhere. It is truly a forerunner to all arenas built afterward.
The palace is still a nice arena but I just hate the location. I know it won't happen but I would love 2 see the pistons downtown when the wings get the new arena in a few years
It’s a shame Magic & Byron Scott had to get hurt. I think this series would’ve gone 7 games like the year before. The Lakers were playing so well, but the Pistons had home court. Who would’ve prevailed? We’ll never know.
If The Defending Back To Back World Champions Los Angeles Lakers didn't have injuries to there starting Backcourt of Magic Johnson & Byron Scott, The Lakers would have won & completed a 3-Peat in 1989. The Pistons could NOT stop Big Game Hall Of Fame James Worthy.
The 1989 Defending Back To Back World Champions Los Angeles Lakers Had A Super Team. They Had The Greatest Big 3 Of All Time in, The Captain Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Earvin Magic Johnson,&, Big Game Hall Of Fame James Worthy. Sharp-Shooter Byron Scott, Defensive Specialist Michael Cooper, Hustling Kurt Rambis, Rebounding Machine A.C. Green, Baller Tony Campbell, Former 1st. Round Pick & Back-Up Big Man Mychal Thompson, The Muscular Orlando Wool ridge. & Head Coach Pat Riley
it's sad my Lakers didn't get to play this team with Byron Scott and Magic basically after game 2 if they had been healthy Lakers would have won hands down
D Fizzle this was karma for playing a completely decimated Boston team in 1987 and a Detroit team with an injured Isaiah Thomas in Game 7 the following year
zt1053 How were The Celtics decimated? They were relying on a broken down Walton. McHale still averaged 22 points per game. I don’t want to hear about Len Bias.
I didn't know the LAKERS were favored at the beginning of this Finals series. I remember how HOT the LAKERS were coming in, but DETROIT was another Animal than any of the teams the LAKERS took care of to get here. Also, take in the fact Byron was questionable and that that Detroit couldn't wait for the REVENGE factor. The 4 Game sweep despite the injury to Byron proved why maybe PISTONS should have been favorites.
william pavichevich I never understood that either. The Lakers only won 57 games that season, were beaten by Detroit both times, and lost to the Celtics without Larry Bird. Not what you call a dominating season
nah, he played his ass off on that ankle, the refs screwed them in the final seconds of game 6 with a bogus foul call on laimbeer. even Kareem said he didn't foul him "that time"
I still get chills watching the opening credits of the finals on cbs

This surprisingly aged well it is not bad for being 29 years old this intro still holds up
I call this the Death Star star opening because the way that the sequence pans across the live-action footage in the backdrops, looks like how the X-Wings in the first Star Wars movie flew through into the trenches of the Death Star.
It looks great -- it would probably be even better if this had been converted from a broadcast-quality tape of the era.
I love how Hubie Brown is calling this game with sound analysis as an old guy, and who would have thought that in another 30 years, he would still be doing it? Hubie is a legend.
Suprised I found you here, Great Content 🔥

I remember this opening. I was in total shock hearing about Byron Scott’s injury. Had no clue about it until this intro.
25 years later & Dick Stockton and Hubie Brown are still broadcasting
And now, here's your host,Dick Stockton!! Well thank you, Shadoe Stevens, the man, the voice!
thetheRedundant Yep and both are bad, especially the boring Dick.
iloveyoumadhuri at least Dick Stockton is better than boring Mike Breen
Brent Musburger is the radio voice of the Oakland Raiders.
30 years later & Dick Stockton and Hubie Brown are still broadcasting
the Pistons are my favorite classic champions. The bad boys!
Kareem still in the finals at age 42!!
Nobody does or did game intros quite like Brent Musburger.
Agreed!
Ben Florance Agree, he also did well Calling the ROSE BOWL on New Years Day.
I really wish CBS didn't fire him. He was the best! But I guess Jim Nantz wouldn't have been #1 if they didn't fire him.
Pat Summerall…His voice was butter. His intros pumped you up for games. Likewise Gifford on MNF Opening.
The Lakers would have completed the 3-Peat!!! If Magic & Scott didn't get injured.
Yeah. Brent was one of the best to do it. What was Brent’s famous four-word sentence? Guess. He always said this at the beginning of every NFL pregame show, “You are looking live!”
I want one of those CBS blazers 😃
I had completely forgot about this re-done CBS intro. It's outstanding as a follow-up to the Boston Garden 1983-1988 intro!
come on. this re-done intro is awful. original was better
Nah..this version of the NBA on CBS was much better.
Nah...paul was right. This was terrible.
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 shut the fuck up

It was first ever the Pistons was played at the new Palace of Auburn Hills.

Try English next time
@@RoadCone411 what? It opened in August 1988 so how had they already played 2 regular seasons there?
Hard to believe The Palace is twenty-five years old. It's just as modern as it was when it first opened.
Cbs get the nba back and work this theme
1:34 RIP Palace of Auburn Hills

This is the debut of the re-make of the NBA on CBS theme!
The series that lead to the mutiny that ran Riley out of town. He was responsible for both injuries (both hamstrings) to Magic and Scott. Changed the series. Probably cost them another chip. Locker room revolt followed.
Potato chip?
@@TL2354 yes...potato chip
Man, CBS had the best NBA broadcasts. It's a shame it was passed on to NBC, ESPN, and TNT.
NBC did a fine job. The theme they used was awesome. ABC/ESPN stinks
Christian Boddie eewww you like john tesh
Read the final season of the NBA on NBC in 2001-2002. It will tell you all you need to know.
NBA on NBC was great. CBS and NBC was the golden time to be an NBA fan. Just hate how NBC had to pass it up to ABC and Disney after 2002 smh
Clarence Parker III how does ABC/ESPN has the nba? NBA ON CBS AND NBA ON NBC FOREVER!
Back when the NBA was great.
In the Philippines, the first NBA Finals coverage was aired on GMA 7 in 1989 until 1995.
No one cares
That version of the NBA on CBS intro was very smoth and really enjoyable.

So long cbs sports!!
Update: The Palace of Auburn Hills no longer exist. The Pistons moved to downtown Detroit.
Basketball was so much better back then.
The palace is still a nice arena but I just hate the location. I know it won't happen but I would love 2 see the pistons downtown when the wings get the new arena in a few years
You're getting your wish.
Pistons sre getting Little Ceaser Arena in downtown Detroit
They did
Eric Maltbia Little Caesars Arena is better than the Palace of Auburn Hills!
ABC has got to go cbs had it for 17 seasons, nbc 12 years, abc 20 years and still in contract for 2 more years!
It’s a shame Magic & Byron Scott had to get hurt. I think this series would’ve gone 7 games like the year before. The Lakers were playing so well, but the Pistons had home court. Who would’ve prevailed? We’ll never know.
after the Magic Johnson interview at 9:00, you can hear the Electric Light Orchestra, "All Over the World" playing in the background!
The Pistons video guy, Pete Skorich, put together a music video with ELO that they played on Channel 50 in Michigan.

Where?
The beast intro in NBA basketball history (NBC is right there). SSPN/ABC & TNT need to bring in the games with these intros
No. NBC’s wasn’t even close! CBS always had a penchant of creating theme songs.
Kareem at 42, wasn't the same guy. I always wished during the 80s, that Kareem was 5 years younger.
it's sad my Lakers didn't get to play this team with Byron Scott and Magic basically after game 2 if they had been healthy Lakers would have won hands down

@@cbod14 Detroit was lucky to win a championship and if Len Bias was alive Detroit would've not a championship, so your comments are irrelevant
CBS should never have changed the theme song for their NBA coverage.
Totally agree I loved the 1989 theme song from cbs nba game
Please find it! I would love to see the CBS intro to the '83 Finals! Let me know if you find it!
Do you have the game 1 intros to the 1982, 1983 & 1986 finals?
Here's the one from '83...

Wonder if Lakers went to the ,2 spot to have the 6"9 and above for all 5 guys on the floor.

Magic never won another title after he shaved the goatee
There were no games 5,6 & 7
Detroit is oh so lucky that Bryon didn't play the whole series and Magic was out by Game 2.
Isiah and the Pistons would have beaten the Lakers in 1988 if it had not been for Isiah's horrible ankle sprain in game six.
nah, he played his ass off on that ankle, the refs screwed them in the final seconds of game 6 with a bogus foul call on laimbeer. even Kareem said he didn't foul him "that time"
But he was pretty much useless for game 7
He put up like 25 in the 3rd quarter
Detroit pistons should have won in 1988 finals 89 and 90 third straight title
too bad they lost Magic and didn't have Scott. It would have been 6th for Magic.
Kevin is Nice they only got to 5 because the pistons had injuries other wise he would have 4 with both teams near 100%
Twink Skill Capped (TSC) not true the pistons just lost.
Good sports broadcasters, but the CBS (C Bull Shit) got nothing on NBC's music theme for NBA.
Here, just like in 2004, the narrative was all about how the Lakers LOST instead of how the Pistons WON-Never any respect for Detroit😒
Shame this finals was m
The Lakers lost bc they changed the theme.
Lame intro compared to 84-88.
The 1989 NBA finals was a joke
This definitely could’ve been a great series if Magic and Byron Scott didn’t get injured, Lakers looked helpless after they went down
That is such a gay intro, as the music and graphics are nowhere nearly as good as they were a year earlier.
That is such a gay intro.Their intros were so good through '87-'88, but then the league changed so much in '88-'89.
