My wife plans on trading her 2018 G80 Sport for the GV70. The dealer let her take one home so I can see it. Must've just got off the truck because it had protective covering all over. Anyway when she pulled up my first word was "wow". She had the red interior red exterior Prestige. Long story short I said to my wife this is Benz quality with a Lexus price tag. The GV70 is WAY more impressive in person. In my opinion the best in class. The GV70 looks and feels it should be 20K more than it's price tag.
I have GV 70 2.5 base, 1000 miles in, I can only describe the overall experience so far as dreamy. Build quality is amazing. Whole car feels like an expensively made vehicle. Maintenance is included for 3 years.
To me these are both fine machines. But the GV70 is a better alternative to established German brands. It also just won the Motor Trend SUV of the year. Certainly lots of great options in this class.
I think you hit on a key point, John. Genesis clearly benchmarked European brands throughout their lineup. Not surprising considering that Hyundai lured a whole cadre of German designers and engineers to the Korean brands. Furthermore, in the potentially huge Asian markets Japanese brands, including Lexus, remain minor players. In part for historical antipathy toward Japanese products that goes back to WWII and before. As you know, when upwardly mobile Asian consumers look for a luxury automobile, they traditionally look first to luxury German brands. Genesis has seriously undermined that appeal in Asia. Lexus, on the other hand, has become a default choice for North American consumers looking for luxury vehicles over the last three decades. Where Lexus was once a "value" alternative to German (and American) luxury brands, it has become a major, even a dominant, force in sales. Obviously, Lexus continues to rely on its strong appeal to luxury buyers and its reputation (deserved or not) for significantly greater reliability. Undoubtedly, the NX group of vehicles will outsell the GV70 in North America because of its hybrid option, its much larger dealer network, and its appeal to an older, more affluent demographic. But Genesis is on a roll in North America now that its dealer network is expanding (after several years of legal troubles with Hyundai dealers) and it is becoming better known.

Lexus sales are mostly warmed over Toyotas and don't have rwd platforms. Genesis is squarely aimed at the European competition. And in that regard, they're doing very well.

I have also owned a Genesis and have to say that they are a serious competitor to ALL brands. Great fit and finish, great technology fantastic warranty and a price that makes sense. I own a 2018 NX today but, if I was in the market for this segment, I would choose the Genesis.
That GV70 is "crushin it" It looks a lot like Porsche Macan touring edition. Those color color combinations I've seen available in the Genesis are amazing.
I drove the dealership owner's demo GV70 today. Swoon, it had every feature available in this SUV. It is more solid, luxurious and peppy than the NX350. They say it has a larger interior, but I can't really tell. Comparing it to my current XT5, it's snug but not claustrophobic like the NX. The seats were plush, the interior mechanics were outstanding. I can't get over how much power it has when taking off from the stoplight. Lexus is almost always #1 in reliability ever year..
I bought the Genesis for looks, tech, quiet ride, softer ride and RWD. I do have to say after 7 months of ownership, there have been quite a few issues. I had the rear differential start making noise after only 1200 KM...you can look that up as their number one most common issue. I also had the steering rack replaced due to heavy steering when it gets very cold. Now I'm waiting for a new throttle body and a water pump. It was hesitating when accelerating, nearly causing an accident and the water pump is leaking. All completely covered under warranty and I have another GV70 as a loaner vehicle...brand new, but it takes 4-5 weeks to get a part. Every time. Everything else has been fantastic and it was great driving through a Canadian winter with AWD, remote app start that turns on heated seats and steering wheel. So...great vehicle but I suspect this first model will take some beating on reliability.
I have owned Lexus since when it first came out and currently own the 2021 RX 450H F series fully loaded but I am about to trade in for GV70 Sport. Genesis is ahead of the game now. It's like Sony TV losing to Samsung TV. I never thought I would say but it's true.
sony didnt lose to samsung tv. samsung, lg and sony all make excellent tvs. not one brand is better than the other. but this car is better than lexus, but lexus is known for long term reliabilty, look at sales for the genesis its pitiful. I think lexus nx lineup sold more than the entire genesis lineup.
@@mitch20003 I think this has a lot to do with Sedans. Up until recently Genesis had no SUV's. Demand for sedans is small. 80% of the cars sold today are trucks and SUV's. It's also a new company a lot of people still haven't heard of. I'm betting the sales of both the used and new cars will go up now that they have SUV's to sell it's just going to take 3 to 5 more years. Once this happens more Genesis dealers will be around and even more cars will sell. I have to drive an hour to get to my closest Genesis dealer. Of course the increased sales of the brand will make me sad. I like driving a mostly unique car in the area I live in.
You can't go wrong here with either one, but if you care anything about actual driving, the GV70 wins hands down. They're both new and the interior tech is similar, but the GV70 just looks better and drives better. The Lexus is the ultimate commuter vehicle, but much nicer than before. Genesis is for drivers, and would be my choice.
Search! Genesis is an unreliable and unproven brand; that's why it hasn't sold many vehicles at all. In my neighborhood alone, it is filled with Lexuses, Bimmers, Mercs, Porsches, Acuras, etc. and no Genesis ever. 🤣
I think Lexus should be concerned. The Genesis brand is slowly building up steam. It is and will be taking sales away from Lexus. This GV is breathtakingly more attractive inside and out, more spacious and less expensive (save resale). A clear winner, in my opinion. Thanks for another comparison video.
@@kellingtonlink956 Hopefully they become embarrassed by their own doings and recognize that it's time to part ways with their outdated technology and FWD (RAV4/CAMRY based) platforms. Not sure where you see Lexus charging that $10K extra over G70. Tha base price is actually $6K higher, but you don't say whether the equipment is comparable or Lexus offers more and when you move to the higher trimms it's on par. GREAT GREAT REVIEW....So i"ve already test drove the Genesis GV70 down here in Glendale CA about 2 months ago, I'm now waiting on the Lexus Dealerships to showcase the new NX350H. Here is a bit of insight into the future if you don't mind me sharing. Again, this might not apply to you but it is worth looking into. As we know we are heading into a shortage of "Energy" and yes that includes Gasoline for whatever the reasons might be the cost of such forms of energy will become that much more expensive. If you are one that will be driving more than 20K miles per year you could see a spike on the cost to fill up your tank. This then takes us to the "Who Actually buys Lexus" and that will be someone like me, the person that has saved enough pennies to acquire a "fancy" yet RELIABLE vehicle, this is the same reason I would not for now venture to buy one of the Europeans cars even though they are gorgeous vehicles. And with that said the cost of Gas will be a huge indicator when it comes to my purchase decision. If only Genesis would give signals of a Hybrid version and NOT fully EV as also the cost of Electricity will be skyrocking "mark my words" I would gladly place down $32K as a downpayment and be happy with a monthly payment of $400 under a 5 year term, knowing full well I would try to pay it off before then. Thank you.
I'm waiting for the Hyundai motor corp. to come out with the hydrogen fuel cell cars. I read an article that said they are investing millions into making it happen and are way ahead of anyone else. IF we truly want "green" power this is the future.
Also check out Acura RDX, Volvo XC60,Porsche Macan, Cadillac XT5, Lincoln Corsair, Infiniti as these are reliable too but not boring like the Lexus. A fancy car without the emblem would be Mazda Signature trim
I am gonna get a 2022 Lexus NX FSport. Sorry, but for me the GV70 looks like a cross between a Volvo and a Porsche....not that it's a bad thing....but Lexus has a design distinctively their own, I really like the spindle grill!
Not sure where you pulled those numbers but Edmund's contracts that with residuals of 66% for the GV70 and a 58% for the NX on a 12/36 lease It is surprising just how bad of a value Lexus is these days.
GV70 for looks, performance, interior, tech and warranty. Lexus is too angled/edgy for my tastes, never liked their hourglass grills. Bought a GV70 3.5 Sport Prestige last week, white with red interior, beautiful vehicle.
The only NX that interests me is the 450h plug-in hybrid because it’s eligible for a $7500 tax credit. Genesis is nice but the depreciation is so bad that I might only want one with a lease deal.

Genesis GV70 for me. Advanced model and 2023 because they drop some features in 2024, (in the US)! I don't care about badge image at all-I bought a Subaru "Forester" when no one knew what they were either, although I do take a bit of pride in being THATkind of cool-😆!! I think at this level they are all pretty good so either is a good choice!I I agree with all your positive points on the GV70. I'm fine with the steering wheel. Actually, it wouldn't have occured to me to notice it really! I think the "upgrade" looks worse in terms of overall styling and you lose MPG and some comfort with the bigger tires. That matters more to me than the steering whee! I also like that with "Driver Assist" on I can comfortaby rest my hand where that third spoke would be so as not to get that warning alarm. One question: Do you think the tint on the Genesis moonroof is better than the clear? Well done review, as always!

What a dumb comment. You clearly have no clue how huge Toyota/Lexus is worldwide. But numbers do speak for themselves and while admittedly Hyundai is doing pretty good for their luxury lone of cars, they still have a long way to go to catch to Toyota.
why have a wireless charger in the gv70 without wireless android auto, apple carplay, you have to plug in to use the android auto, applecarplay anyway so it will charge without needing the wireless charging. Many cars have this problem. All GMs and BMWs lead in this feature.
Lexus feels like they can charge a premium because they honestly can lol. BMW and Mercedes have been charging a premium and price gauging for simple features for decades and nobody bats an eye. Even when it has been pretty much universally known that those cars won’t hold up and would be absolute nightmares to maintain past their warranties. At least you know that Lexus will give you a quality product. Lexus doesn’t charge a premium here in the States, but they could, because time and time again they prove that they have the better quality product. They don’t build cars to win comparisons. They build cars to win customers lol. I do like the GV70, but I don’t love it. The rear end styling is a complete mess to me if I’m being honest. These are not Sport sedans, I could give a damn about how sporty the GV70 drives. Lexus NX350 all the way for me.

I bought a lexus and i didn't go into a lexus dealer expecting toyota prices. I also like all of the other prestige brands, i am not sure what my next prestige brand will be.
Correction at 5:00 the 2.5t top trim the prestige which is what I ordered comes with 19 wheels in Canada. The 21 only available with the 3.5t. Also when comparing prices lexus you need to add over $2k for prep
Lexus is the winner regardless. Reputation, longevity, build quality, fit and fish, unique Lexus dealer experience. Lexus name and reputation are unbeatable. GV70 is a great modern SUV but Lexus IS in a league of its own.

Good review but there is NO WAY this SUV is depreciating 70% after 5 years. The G70 depreciates about the same as a BMW 3 Series. The GV70 hasn't been on sale long enough but it's all about supply and demand...basic Economics 101. The demand will be high and the stock low so used GV70's will not depreciate anywhere close to this figure. Need to do a better job on this part because it's important to get the numbers right. This is Motor Trends Car of the Year. I see how your rationale but it's flawed in this case so you have to find another way as there's no history on this vehicle as it's a new model. If anything, 1 year depreciation on GV70 might even be better than its peers, given the hot demand (barely any used inventory!)

The new NX looks like a Buick bubble car with a Lexus front and rear end. Nothing great there at all! The Genesis looks amazing! Has better quality, free scheduled maintenance, a kick-A$$ warranty and superior handling and performance. It's a no brainer for those under 60y.o. wanting a sporty compact SUV.
GV70 is more of an enthuisast's choice, while NX is more appealing to most people. As Lexus has a proven reliability history and residual value, while Genesis is a relatively new brand. I have seen quite a lot of GV70 on Vancouver roads, given we only have 2 dealers in Metro Vancouver. That speaks to how attractive Genesis have made their SUVs are.
I want to like the Lexus because it a warmed over Toyota so you know it’s reliable but it’s just not a nice looking car in my eyes - outside or inside.
The GV70 reminds me a lot of the now defunct Infiniti EX35. A proper RWD sport-ute with decent power, state of the art tech, and handsome looks. Genesis is what Infiniti should've become. Sad about Nissan's current state of affairs, but happy with all the success and accolades that Hyundai and Kia are getting nowadays, they deserve it!
57% retained value for the NX compare to the 30% for the GV70? That's a huge difference! That means NX will be much cheaper to lease and save money over time.
Compare the lease between the nx and genesis and you'll see the Genesis has a cheaper lease. Lexus will give you higher rates and pocket the difference when you return the lease.
@@hiroanz tbh, neither is financially good for lease. German cars are better for leasing (with a lower rate and typically a warranty coverage during the leasing period), whereas these Japanese and Korean cars are better for financing.
I actually like the interior of the Lexus better. The Genesis exterior is very nice, mind you I think the appearance of the Lexus has improved a lot as well. Only 30 percent after five years with the Genesis? Wow. To me, the sportiness of the Genesis is a huge plus… but the Lexus retaining more of its value is also a big deal to me. Tough call!
The Lexus NX is ugly and already looks dated. The NX is based upon the RAV4 an FWD biased economy CUV. The NX look as though the Ford Escape and Mazda CX-5 had a baby...except neither of those cars have the hideous Lexus Grill. The Genisis is based upon a RWD Biased Luxury Platform. The GV70 looks amazing in person...though I'm not a huge fan of the oval theme of the interior...especially the base steering wheel. They say it has a larger interior, but I can't really tell. Comparing it to my current XT5, it's snug but not claustrophobic like the NX. The seats were plush, the interior mechanics were outstanding. I can't get over how much power it has when taking off from the stoplight. I am glad I subscribed to this channel because I found my new car. One I had never heard of before today.
Towing matters too. Didn’t realize NX can only tow 2000 vs 3500 of GV70.

Personally I prefer the Genesis. Better looking and great value vehicle IMO.
So...great vehicle but I suspect this first model will take some beating on reliability.

sony didnt lose to samsung tv. samsung, lg and sony all make excellent tvs. not one brand is better than the other. but this car is better than lexus, but lexus is known for long term reliabilty, look at sales for the genesis its pitiful.
The 5-year residual 56% vs 30% difference is huge, it’s going to offset the high price for the NX. Also that makes GV70 a very good buy as used car

Genesis GV70 for me. Advanced model and 2023 because they drop some features in 2024, (in the US)! I control the screen from the console primarily, so reach is not a problem and the positioning helps keep your eyes in a split vision with the road. Landscape is significanly better! I lreally don't like th looks of the NX grill which somehow reminds me of the helmet the villain in the movie "Predator" wore! 😆I haven't worried about resale value that much as I tend to drive a car until they are not worth much as a trade-in. At 65, I don't worry much about money anyway. I don't care about badge image at all-I bought a Subaru "Forester" when no one knew what they were either, although I do take a bit of pride in being THATkind of cool-😆!! I think at this level they are all pretty good so either is a good choice!I
I agree with all your positive points on the GV70.

@@SV-du2pf Newer Genesis have been right up there with Lexus in reliability. It hasn’t been around long enough to determine 10 -20 year reliability, but it sure is more reliable than any European or American brands. I don’t get cars that’ll last me 20 years. Long as they’re reliable beyond 100k miles, I’m ok since I change cars every 5 years or so.
Genesis GV70 for me 🤩
Considering everything, I think GV70 is better for power and price. In particular, the GV70 has a simple and intuitive interior. Considering Lexus and modern times, it would be more natural for me to choose Lexus, but now the times are changing.
that GV70 is impressive for the price point
I wonder why reviewers don't just put the cars side by side so we can 'see' the differences - that would really help. No one does it
