@@BasketgangYeah. Any attack can cancel the move entirely. Thunder, Strike Raid or Trinity Limit are perfect options if you're too far away. Also Reflect is a good spell to use against Sephiroth whenever he's surrounded by fire or when slashing towards you. Reflect is such a life saver and is overpowered as hell.
Lesson 1: always make sure to level up your drive forms, cause when you do, you get their growth abilities like, High Jump (Valor), Slide Dash (Wisdom), Ariel Dodge (Master), Dodge Roll (Limit), Glide (Final). Lesson 2: Make sure to stock Up on Elixirs and Megalixirs
So if you dont want to use any spell like reflect (arguably the best spell in the game) i'd say go for counterguard when you block his slashes as you cancel his combo and can keep going, dont combo him mid air as youre pretty vulnerable there and he will always recover after 2 combos, take off dodge slash...it's just bad you cant cancel the move, looks weird, deals low dmg, tends to whiff and leave you in a long animation that it will end with you dead, aerial dive is better than aerial spiral by a longshot and try to get/use aerial dodge and hit sephiroth when he charges the heartless angel, and after a zentetsuken use directly a limit as you cancel of the animation pretty quickly with that so you're not caught with your pants down EDIT: use the explosion finisher (if you want) as it's an amazing dmg move (which deals more dmg the more magic you have) but even if your magic isnt better it deals big dmg, and you could just keep these 2 finishers equipped and use finishing plus.
Unless you're doing challenges, how I would approach this fight. Get rid of dodge slash. Has a good chance of missing one of the attacks and with Sephiroth's fast recovery can amke him attack you mid combo. Get High Jump growth skill from Valor form and max it. Get Aerial Dodge growth skill from Master form and max it. If you're going to use guard, use guardbreak on his octsslash midcombo to immediately allow you to make him flinch and start your own combos. I prefer a full jump+aerial dodge+ an attack when sephiroth does his octaslash attack (His normal physical attack) This gives you enough time to dodge his attack completely and on first+second form, enough time to counter. I find guard to be a little buggy in this fight. Try not to make sephiroth teleport by doing multiple combos. Do your one combo and run back. You can actually cheese his AI by making him spam octaslash which basically gives you free hits on his first and second form. Distance is definitely key though as depending on distance away from sephiroth depends on what moves he may use next. You can use reflectga to reflect his dark energy balls back at him. When upperslashed into the air, you can immediately aerial recover and use reflect, this will protect you from the first attack. Depending on timing, you might take a hit on his final strike but once the reflect breaks, he'll usually get stunned, allowing you to get a free combo in. If you don't make him teleport by multi-comboing him, when he does teleport, he'll usually do an upperslash, you can block that with good timing. It's almost predictable when he does it. High Jump+Aerial dodge will easily get you within range of Descent heartless angel, allowing a free combo hit. If on the ground, reflect can be combo'd, this allows you to tank all but his descent heartless angel attack, especially useful if you managed to get stuck in his fire attack. If in the air, you can use reflect when he uses his Scintilla attack in which you have to use a reaction command against (But can't since you're in the air). Reflect will guard against the attack. If you are a certain height above Sephiroth when he does Scintilla, you do not need to do anything, his attack won't reach. Usually this height is around the height of when he upperslashed you into the air. When jumping, once you hit the ground, Sora will be unable to do absolutely anything (Including reflect and reaction commands) for one second and this is Sora's most vulnerable time. In this fight, that one second can be deadly. So if you're in the air, be sure when you touch the ground, Sephiroth is the one in a vulnerable state. To dodge Sephiroth's meteor attacks, Jump straight up, then immediately aerial dodge to the left. Land and Jump straight up and immediately aerial dodge to the right. If this is kept up, you shouldn't get hit. On Sephiroth's last form, if he's running to the side, he will do one of three things, he'll usually attack with his octaslash, he'll teleport and do descent heartlesss andel or he'll jump to the other side of the map. 8 times out of ten is octaslash. You can avoid it by simply jumping or you can block it with good timing. He may also use descent heartless angel but it's pretty rare. If he jumps to the other side of the map, there is a small window where he's vulnerable to attack, however, it's also a time when he's trying to lure you before he does a descent heartless angel skill or the fire pillar attack.. If you can hit him, hit him, if not, run in the opposite direction from him. When he does his energy ball attack and then tries to use octaslash, you can guard octaslash and be completely protected against the energy balls while guarding against octaslash. YOu can also deflect the energy balls with an attack, but I find explosion to be the best attack to block them with . Honestly, 99 times out of 100 it's best to just use reflectga. When being combo'd, you can break out of his combos with Trinity Limit or Limit Form. Trinity Limit is more useful as it only costs MP to use. Limit Form does heal but you're completely reliant on drive gauge accumulation. If you don't want to get High Jump/Aerial Dodge, you can stop sephrioth from using descent heartless angel by using trinity limit. Do note this will cause your MP to drop to MP charge and won't be able to use reflect until it either charges or healed with an item.
Lol when i played this as a kid, I challenged myself to beat him at the lowest level possible with the weakest keyblade. Pretty sure it took me near 30 tries, but I pulled it off at either level 28 or 29, with the Winnie the Pooh keyblade. Felt awesome, I really need to try that again sometime.

As much as I respect the effort to beat Sephrioth in this level, there were many critical points that could’ve been avoided to make this encounter 10 times better. First, you should’ve equipped Vicitinity Break and should’ve added Strike Raid and Ars Arcanum in your shortcuts rather than items. They could’ve saved you in many mistakes during the fight. Second, you should’ve leveled up Wisdom and Master Forms to unlock Quick Run and Ariel Dodge that would’ve helped you avoid the fire attack and meteor attack at the second half. Third, you’re spamming too much during the fight rather than focusing on his seconds of disappearing to anticipate his next move, it made you vulnerable to many of his attacks.
