Agreed, for instance I've heard three different things brought up as autistic traits: Emotional intensity Emotional faintness Emotions lasting shorter than normal in autistic people Relatively faint emotions that are easily let go of are a good trait to have in a purpose-bred shock trooper.
Wait a second is the Emperor Autistic? From what I can gather reading the books he is capable of understanding or picking up human Emotions and even mimic them, but is unable to translate them in a way where he can truly actually be considerate of most human Emotions. He understands humanity and how people think and even capable of even sympathizing just a bit from what we see, but isn't capable of actually translating or even finding it hard to care for long just due to the fact his age and what he is won't let him care. How he had Come to *Eventually* love his sons who when you actually break it down are straight up just warp mimicking, monstrosities that wear skin suits *(which explains why the Emperor displayed emotion for everyone but them till later on)* tells us he had been able care once which also tells us he wasn't scheming on galactic domination at the age of 6 and likely was born, grew and lived like the rest of the farming peasentry at the time, only differents being he couldn't die. Which is why his such an Ass most of the time and modeled the imperium after imperial Rome. His just the text book defenetion of a boomer which explains a lot 😂 though he was likely born with autistic traits, they had just likely amplified as he begun to age with him going full on coocoo and fully drowning in his own sauce after living through multiple apocalyptic events caused by humanity. Which explains why despite wanting to protect them finds it hard to care about normal humans, can't say I blame him to much to be honest😅
@@sombodythatyouusedtoknow9046it's called sex, something most space marines (and space marines fans) will never experience due to their severe case of autism.
Yea, something engineered. Like maybe a dash of Autism, a bit of ADHD, and a healthy dose of Psychopathy as a base. I think Humanity experienced many episodes of unrestricted scientific experiments on humans. We understood the body, brain and mind much more during the Golden Age. Unfortunately, i dont believe all of that knowledge was gained ethically.
I mean space marines arr heavily mind altered during the creation process. It's not entirely a cultural thing, I'm sure there is a physiological component as well
@@riddell26 that is completely untrue. i don't intend to offend you, but it is fairly clear you do not work in research. the amount of ethical oversight that is prerequisite in even the most inconsequential medical studies is maddening. i understand that it is necessary to be this stringent, as a lot is on the line, but its extreme to a point were we sometimes spend entire months just remodeling the smallest of details of just how we inform prospective patients for a study. i can't speak for the entire world, but the ethical standards of the little corner i inhabit are strict, and our region is one of the top providers of neurological research in the world.
I recall in Horus Rising, Loken referring to polishing his armour with lapping powder as an activity he found "soothing", so yeah, repetitive action = soothing.
Yeah as someone who has Asperger’s I actually found myself able to empathize and relate to the space marine characters in some of the dialogue and relationships that they have because it feels very much how I end up interacting with people around me.
Huh im autistic i never heard of the autistic pain resistance although i guess that explains the time i got hit by a car and just stood back up and started walking
As an autistic person myself I can definitely see how being autistic could be extremely beneficial for space Marines. Just speaking from personal experience I perform my best when I restrict myself from doing other things and super focus on to one thing for extended period of time and the longer I focus the more momentum I build and the better I do. Space Marines have a very restricted life style so I would imagine they have a lot of this momentum on their side. It's also much easier and more enjoyable for me to do things in my cone of interest so assuming that space Marines have war in their cone of interest I could see how this could really help space Marines do their job.
As a Vet hearing all of this and watching the entire video subscribing and giving a like. I realized that the Army gave me Autism because the symptoms started once I was in. The sorting, the polishing of items, cleaning, solitary activities, especially the trains. I went crazy for trains to the point I planned an Amtrak from Texas to Chicago. I even used to be able too read instructions and now i am a visual learner.
I think it has less to do with the medical autism, more to do with how space marines are raised. they don't get proper socialization most of the time because they grow up with the chapter from a young age, as well as all the brainwashing space marines go through as well, it makes most space marines not the best conversationalists. however, traits such as being able to be hyper aware, efficient, and understanding of engineering and complex tactics are something they are schooled in deeply. because of all this space marine social circles are much different then baseline humans. space marines might casually discuss the preferred way to fight different enemies and different tactics the same way normal people might talk about the weather or relationship drama simply because thats how their life and childhood is.
As someone with ASD, you hit the jackpot, explained it coherently and respectfully, not generalizing and using very common traits, yet still mentioning how it’s a spectrum Also, the way you narrate these videos is super inspiring, it never felt boring and it kept my attention all the time, this felt like another one of your shorts, but here I am, 20 minutes later lmao, good job!
I’m autistic and scarcasm as a defense mechanism as I don’t know the proper way to interact. I have class 1 autism. But salamader white scars and black dragons can easily get along with humans. Like the book about salamander helping a child find her teddy bear.
As someone with diagnosed Autism, I can confirm that the Iron Warriors, Imperial Fists, and Iron hands are Autistic, and at that, they are also my favorite Legions. Edit: Thanks for all the likes! Iron without, iron without.
I don't think the Iron Hands are necessarily autistic, they just hate being human because they see robotics and computers as superior to organic bodies and brains, which they are.
I love the idea of an ultramarine having a model train set and making sure it runs efficiently. With little cargo crates and people who need there deliveries on time.
"They shall be my most autistic warriors, in very specific interests shall i clad them and with the mightiest fidgets they will be armed. They shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe (normie) shall best them in battle." I cant keep writing this garbage but hope someone laughs at it
I think the Wolves, Salemander, and White Scars are supposed to be the "Big Brother" strain of space marine... Mature and well-rounded to act as a role-model for other marines and even baseline human.
I was just chilling and then "are space marines autistic?" Pops up in my recommended by the throne that was hilarious especially when you consider the fact that I'm actually autistic myself
I am diagnosed Autistic, as well as a Boxer. Boxing is my soul interest, and my free time is spent shadowboxing and watching 12-15rd fights on repeat and frame by frame, or memorizing every Boxing history fact and date available lol I have nearly no friends outside of Boxing. My wife and daughter Box. My brother is my main sparring partner and introduced me to Warhammer 40K. He is also Autistic and plays Imperial Fists lol I also have greatly reduced pain and disproportionate autism strength. I have to hold back completely in sparring and still unintentionally injure people unless it's extremely light contact. I've had multiple surgeries without anesthesia because it doesn't work on me in safe doses. I learned socialization out of necessity and enjoy speaking with people about subjects that interest them and hearing about peoples passions and troubles. I was very large for my age and was routinely beaten by adults and teenagers as a child. I was bigger than nearly all of them by 12yrs old. I like the intricacies of 40K lore, and it's parallels with reality. It makes you appreciate how good things are and realize how much worse they could be lol I enjoy learning about every faction and lean towards Salamanders for their desire to remain human and Black Templars because they are far more human and less fanatic than in the memes, and because they waste no time in seeking out the traitors and enemies of Mankind.
“Malcador! I will make the perfect transhuman super soldier. They will be 11ft tall, and have the best augments I can install in a human body. I will give them the finest armor and the most terrible of weapons.” “Why would those weapons be my lord?” “I will make them autistic.”
1:13 They still are, depending on the autism in question. I have it and have been able to circumvent or correct pretty much all of the social drawbacks by decades of careful observation and self-adjustment, especially during middle school and high school. I'm actually very happy with my autism, as it gives me several advantages in a wide variety of fields. There are still a few drawbacks I haven't been able to fully correct (though they are accounted for), such as it being very hard, at times, to start or stop doing things (especially if said things are social in nature and not a part of my routine) and my perfectionist tendencies can sometimes get the best of me (I can spend literal hours on a single YT comment, among other issues), but I'm rather proud of the capabilities I have that few of my peers can match (sometimes as a direct result of said perfectionist tendencies). As an example (my apologies if this is a bit long), a former boss of mine asked me to complete a complex task asap because the customers who needed said product were coming to visit the company in two days. I somewhat reluctantly agreed and proceeded to not sleep, bathe, or eat proper food (I subsisted on hamburgers) for a day and two straight nights while sitting in my office chair to finish the task I agreed to do asap. Everyone thought the task was impossible, including my boss. He also meant the sane version of asap - which included sleep and going home. I, meanwhile, provided a literal asap performance. I was putting the finishing touches on the product right as the customers came to visit our company from abroad (Germany) and I was able to personally show them the nearly-finished item in question. It also helped that I happen to speak German and am fairly personable. The customers and my boss were very happy, but they weren't the only ones who were impressed. Some 6 years later, my best friend and often business partner, who also worked for the same company previously and saw the entire thing happen, told this story when introducing me to one of the new partners in a business venture. I didn't consider it much to brag about, but he made it a point to state how impressive it was and it seems the new colleague agreed (I just did my job to the very best of my ability, but apparently that's very rare). It sometimes pays dividends to be autistic.
The pain resistance thing is real. I’ve had commercial grade ceiling lights fall on me and I get back up like it’s nothing. And then I’ve had walls and other things fall on me just because my job was in construction, and it was nothing slight inconvenience at most.
I crashed with my motorcycle and had a stress fracture on T11 in my spine. The day after at the hospital I was up walking, and I had been given just a minimum of morphine, because it f's up my stomach. They'd never seen that at the hospital before. Most people stay in bed for three days at least, and take as much anesthetics as they possibly can, they said.
Ufff, I have a brother and a lot of friends with autism (which... Is weird to have too many?) Anyways, there are soo many simplifications and things that are not true (not universally) about autism that really hurts me to listen. Every autist I know doesn't really understand organization or schedule. In fact their houses like that meme (the one abut having a lot of noise, a really close fan, and a disorganised room to be just focused). And the Savant thing... A lot of autist people talk about their hyperfixation. Put a person overly fixated on a theme, put him next to someone who doesn't know anything about history or humanities or art (usually medics and psychologist huh) and people would read an autist as some kind of savant.
I'd be very careful about ascribing neurodivergent traits to "it being useful back in our hunter-gatherer days". Cause a Lot of evo-psych analyses in that vein can quickly turn into just-so stories where people basically start with a bunch of assumptions on how evolutionary psychology is "supposed" to work, and then start working backwards trying to fit any neurodivergent behaviour into that model. RUclipsr Münecat made a pretty good video about it a couple months ago if you're interested
ADHD make hunterers and gatherers go *brrrrrrr* (My family has a lot of hunters in it. All of them with ADHD are significantly better at it. This is anecdotal data that hints towards ADHD being advantageous in history)
I don't think that marines being fine with eye contact or lacking social anxiety is a problem with them also being autistic. After all, eye contact can be frightening because it lets you feel exposed, but marines are trained to face off with terrifying threats. A human staring at them would no longer be a worry. Also the fear of people not liking you I believe stems from a fear of being ostracised and alone. Marines have complete faith that their chapter accepts them, their serfs are used to their ways and defer to them or at least talk to them with respect. Why would they care if some random general gives them a scowl? They outrank them in every way.
1:10 i mean considering autism is the add of its time, the fact people trying to attach it to things it really is the diagnosis in search of a patient.
“Trains travel on a set schedule unless you’re in Germany” I did NOT see that jab at DB coming in a video about space marines, but it did make me laugh out loud in the middle of the street.
Space Marines are not autistic. They are, in fact, perfectly integrated in their society. As for humanity at large, in 40k that humanity is a rabid mob of religious fanatics, so not being on the same level is a bonus.
The one thing I don't think lines up all that much is from one story about a Terminator space marine somehow (idk) getting amnesia on a planet that's basically just in the middle ages in tech, he doesn't have any issues at all with socializing and becomes a local celebrity, he died defending the town that took him in with a final martyrdom, killing a high ranking tyranid as it also killed the terminator.
I honestly learned more about autism as a spectrum from this than I ever did in high school or college, and this is coming from a guy who was diagnosed with it in middle school and was sent to a high school program for the mentally challenged.
My autism spectrum crashes like the DV logo on a screen and chooses as a favorite astartes chapters: Raptors, Black templars, Imperial fists, Salamanders, Iron warriors and World eaters. All of these are VERY at the extremes of the other, yes, I am a very fan of all of them, yes, I know their lore, yes, I'm autistic, yes. So, I can confirm that ALL OF THEM are autistic and they form a complex puzzle that complements me and represents every part of my being. (Included Raptors and Black templars. Sounds weird, I know, right?)
This is a very interesting topic that you handled very well. I like that you took autism as a starting point and as a comparison, and went in a unique direction, rather than making something memey out of it. I will say, a lot of this can also be explained by them being a) child-soldiers, and b) monks. Oh, and as you touch on: the less monastic Chapters fit this type less.
Of course they do! singularly focused and every faction even has a "special interest" and divisions based on how they do it. Even chaos embodies the autistic mindset when frustrated "Things aren't how I like it, I don't care, fuck this place burn it down" rather than normal diplomacy or compromise. Every Primarch has autistic qualities with a dash of other mental disorders that helps them perform whatever nightmare inducing activity they specialize in. As funny as it is to imagine 9 ft tall autists in space whose special interest is killing bad guys i don't think anything else is more terrifying if your the bad guy.

Emotions lasting shorter than normal in autistic people
Relatively faint emotions that are easily let go of are a good trait to have in a purpose-bred shock trooper.
@@odinlindeberg4624Oh definitely. The Emperor would see traits like that as perfect for his armies of biological monstrosities
Iron within iron without!
His just the text book defenetion of a boomer which explains a lot 😂
though he was likely born with autistic traits, they had just likely amplified as he begun to age with him going full on coocoo and fully drowning in his own sauce after living through multiple apocalyptic events caused by humanity. Which explains why despite wanting to protect them finds it hard to care about normal humans, can't say I blame him to much to be honest😅

My first instinct: They're not neurotypical, but I don't think it's autism, I think it's new and spicy kinds of deviation from the human 'norm'.
Unfortunately, i dont believe all of that knowledge was gained ethically.

i understand that it is necessary to be this stringent, as a lot is on the line, but its extreme to a point were we sometimes spend entire months just remodeling the smallest of details of just how we inform prospective patients for a study.

Thats called adrenaline and shock. It probably hurt more afterwards and you got swollen in the area of impact
No wonder I vibe with the Marines despite being a Gaurdsmen enjoyer
Understanding how things operate brings comfort, not understanding how things operate brings anxiety.
"Literally me. fr fr" The video
If my son is born with autism im gonna tell him he is a space marine
"oh hey this is a cool video idea" 18 minutes later "huh, I might be a space marine"
As someone with ASD, you hit the jackpot, explained it coherently and respectfully, not generalizing and using very common traits, yet still mentioning how it’s a spectrum
Also, the way you narrate these videos is super inspiring, it never felt boring and it kept my attention all the time, this felt like another one of your shorts, but here I am, 20 minutes later lmao, good job!
I feel the autism overtaking me; it is a good pain.

I am diagnosed Autistic, as well as a Boxer. Boxing is my soul interest, and my free time is spent shadowboxing and watching 12-15rd fights on repeat and frame by frame, or memorizing every Boxing history fact and date available lol
I have nearly no friends outside of Boxing. My wife and daughter Box. My brother is my main sparring partner and introduced me to Warhammer 40K. He is also Autistic and plays Imperial Fists lol
I also have greatly reduced pain and disproportionate autism strength.
It makes you appreciate how good things are and realize how much worse they could be lol
I enjoy learning about every faction and lean towards Salamanders for their desire to remain human and Black Templars because they are far more human and less fanatic than in the memes, and because they waste no time in seeking out the traitors and enemies of Mankind.
“Malcador! I will make the perfect transhuman super soldier. They will be 11ft tall, and have the best augments I can install in a human body. I will give them the finest armor and the most terrible of weapons.”
“Why would those weapons be my lord?”
“I will make them autistic.”
What I've learned from this is, that the arrival time of german trains is also a spectrum

To be fair, that bit was more of a legion trait than something implied to be common to space marines.
Is weird to have too many?)
Anyways, there are soo many simplifications and things that are not true (not universally) about autism that really hurts me to listen.
This is the funniest title and thumbnail for a Warhammer video ever 🤣🤣🤣

I'd be very careful about ascribing neurodivergent traits to "it being useful back in our hunter-gatherer days".
Cause a Lot of evo-psych analyses in that vein can quickly turn into just-so stories where people basically start with a bunch of assumptions on how evolutionary psychology is "supposed" to work, and then start working backwards trying to fit any neurodivergent behaviour into that model. RUclipsr Münecat made a pretty good video about it a couple months ago if you're interested

Talos definitely came off that way when we flash-backed to his childhood.
“Trains travel on a set schedule unless you’re in Germany”
I did NOT see that jab at DB coming in a video about space marines, but it did make me laugh out loud in the middle of the street.
Space Marines are not autistic. They are, in fact, perfectly integrated in their society. As for humanity at large, in 40k that humanity is a rabid mob of religious fanatics, so not being on the same level is a bonus.

It's a popular meme, but in general, no, their personalities are the result of a stunted development and a LOT of conditioning.
So they have autism by nurture, not nature... got it LOL
As an Autistic person, i feel proud that i have been compared to Space Marines.
“Do space marines have autism? Black Templars. Next question”
Funny thing about the Dreadclaw drop pods, their machine spirits were malicious from the get go
This is a very interesting topic that you handled very well. I like that you took autism as a starting point and as a comparison, and went in a unique direction, rather than making something memey out of it.
I will say, a lot of this can also be explained by them being a) child-soldiers, and b) monks.
Oh, and as you touch on: the less monastic Chapters fit this type less.
When I heard the thing about the trains I thought of it like a magic card.
I think how some "autistic" chapters chooses aspirants would just naturally select for these "autistic " traits
