A wonderful song about Tom's childhood and forgiveness for his father who used to beat him because he wasn't into education or sports, dropped out of high school to get high and play music. Tom Petty was as unique as the Pyramids in Egypt or the Taj Mahal. His lyrics were as rare as the Mona Lisa, a true legend like Mark Twain who comes along about once every 200 centuries. His song Even the Losers Get Lucky Sometime is my lifetime comparative song and motivates me every time I hear it. I was that guy who cut school also to get high at lunch, now I run a corporation in America. You can do anything in life with a strong will and Tom Petty songs, work hard, be honest and the secret of life is how you affect others in a positive way. Tom Petty taught me that! Remember people, don't back down, you got lucky when I found you. lol :) Best song ever in concert - If I was King, that song is so heavenly in concert. Love you Tom, hope the kind bud is good up there! hugs, Jack Trout

What a wonderful post. I think in the end Tom did make amends with his Dad. But I think your comparing Tom as unique as the pyramids, the Taj Mahal, and lyrics as rare as the Mona Lisa, hit the nail on the head. I have never been so sad over a musician passing as I am with Tom. I play his music everyday. The abuse Tom got from his father had the opposite effect, it didn't knock out his music loving, it made him more determined. The saying "Damaged people are dangerous, they know they can survive." Could have been said about Tom Petty. Hence his fights with record companies. Great man who will be missed by me, anyway, forever.

"My philosophy is: What people say about me is none of my business.
I am who I am and do what I do.
I expect nothing and accept everything.
    And that makes life easier.
We live in a world where funerals are more important than the deceased, marriage is more important than love, looks are more important than the soul.
We live in a packaging culture that despises content."

So amazing. I just heard this song for first time. Today, a day after Mr. Petty passed.
This song is perhaps the one of the only songs to touch me so deeply. As an adult child of an alcoholic I find such a healing tone in this music. I have never connected to song in a such a way, I hate to admit, but I tear up every time I listen.
I think the video portrays the feelings and emotions of the song extremely poignantly.
Leaving the keys in the caddy is genius. Methaporical to me as leaving the pain behind.
Such a gem of human emotion portrayed musically and visually.
I'm truly touched. I'm sad I only found this today. Thank Tom Petty, I'll run down a dream as often as I can.

This song gets to me every time I hear it. Even more so with the video. This song is all about letting go of resentment, and I feel like this is possibly Tom’s most personal song he ever wrote. Its beautiful and painful at the same time, as is life. My favorite line: “People are what people make em”. RIP Petty

This Petty production offers a rather soothing platform in at putting the soul at ease. Listen to the lyrics closely. One message is to clear your mind of harping on past ills and cherish what you have. While one may be on the brink of depravity - one still has something to offer to those in greater need than of their own. Mr. Petty was brilliant.

The song and the video as always ... disjunct. Tom Petty was brutally ill treated by his father and some of the video echoes scenes he witnessed. The intro don't hurt me mama .... he didn't need to do that. He stopped covering up for his Dad got angry and then forgave him. full stop. Like his bio one of the most painful manifestations of the life of Tom Petty I have encountered. Broke my heart but he's up there somewhere talking to my Dad and his heroes with his dog.

I think this is such a beautiful and very moving song. I loved it the very first time I heard Tom sing it. Some people are saying that they don't understand the video, but personally, I think the video is a perfect companion to the song. We all change as we get older, our thoughts look back to the shadows of the past, memories that we once pushed aside, come to the fore, tapping at our door. We have to deal with them, even though we perhaps don't want to, because they are too difficult and cause us immense pain. Some memories never leave us, but that same pain is still there. We carry it always, often until we deal with it. I know Tom has had some terrible pain in his life, both physically and emotionally. We have to learn to forgive, because without it, we find no peace within ourselves. Sometimes, we have to learn to forgive ourselves too. :) I hope Tom has found peace, and I wish him happiness. :)

+Math Person - Math, I am so sorry x I do understand that the pain of dealing with some issues can be utterly heart-wrenching. Forgiving others, even if they don't deserve it, even if they don't even know that you have done that, will benefit you, Matt, I promise. :) x Otherwise that anger, and there will be anger, as well as deep sadness, distress and pain, will eat you up from the inside. It destroys everything, but itself. We have all done things which we deeply regret. We seek forgiveness, but we do need to forgive ourselves too. If we are truly sorry for what we have done, and try to make amends, if we can, those are good, positive steps. :) I truly hope that you find the peace you seek, Math, and I wish you happiness in your life. :) - Sue xx

    • @mathmusic1490
      @mathmusic1490 8 лет назад +5

You are so right! I'll seek to forgive in my heart, because those I forgive would deny wrongdoing. So I'll keep it inside me, hoping it eradicates or makes trivial the pain, anger, sadness, and obsessing I've been creating inside me stop eating me up and draining my energy..............................So what's your hourly fee, dear?

    • @suereaney7097
      @suereaney7097 8 лет назад +3

Aww, no, Math, don't feel that you have to trivialise your pain and emotions. If you've been hurt, they are normal to feel, and justified. If you can learn to forgive, though, and I honestly know how difficult that can be, believe me, it helps to stop those feelings overpowering you and, as you say, Math, draining your energy. :) - When people won't even acknowledge that they have hurt you, let alone apologise, I know that is truly upsetting. I am so sorry that you have such pain in your life at the moment, Math, and I really hope that you can move forward. :) x Hourly fee?! Not sure what that's for, but for caring about others, kindness and empathy, my charges are always free :) - Sue x

Tony Hopkins reminds me of a trainer who would train people to ride by the Van Cortland stables in the Bronx when my dad was the foreman for the Parks Dept
Thier were trails that people, mostly beginners, would learn how to ride. When I would walk over towards the stables, I would see him there, and he would ask me
if I would care for a ride. I was very young and would turn him down all the time. I remember, instinctively, he was teaching a girl, about 15 years of age how to ride.
She had braces from her knees down. It was somewhat sad, but encouraging at the same time. He would always say to me, If she can do it, Y can't u.
He then told me a story, that if I told u I was a fallen angel and trained all the great riders throughout history to ride (think of all the people he would have trained) would
u then get up on a horse and learn how to ride. I still was in a state of denial and said no. Several years later right before my dad retired, I was in my late teens and
went into the office looking for him. And as luck would have it, he was still there. We talk and talk some more. But before I said my last goodby, I ask him if there was
one person in history who you would have loved to have train how to ride, who would it have been. He put his hand on my shoulder, smiled, and said Joan of Arc. I said
Y her? Because she overcame her fear of riding, and I helped her get ride of the braces she worn on her knees. Yeah, he did not forget about the story he told me either.
Oh and by the way, IF u dare to be curious...his name was Angelo. he was that kind of a fellow.
    true story

Tom Petty one of the great American song writers. He had depth in an increasingly shallow and empty world. ‘People are what people make ‘‘em and that ain’t gonna change, ain’t nothing you can do, nothing you could rearrange’. is something I easily relate to. Save your money on self help and psychologists. This song goes straight to the uncomfortable truth. He did not die before his time, he died just in time.

Really the key to going to heaven. Forgive all and you are forgiven. Jesus is the one who made the road. We all sin and still do as we try to be good. Yet, forgive all, and all is forgiven for you are forgiven. Petty was not just an artist, but a prophet.

RIP, Tom. You were my rock. Tom you helped me recover from Neuropathy. It was you that made me believe that we can get better with time. My surroundings made me get sick, and like in this song, I had to forgive it all and move on. I'm sad beyond words that you are gone now. Thanks for all the wonderful years of dedication to your fans.

I just read down on some of you guys comments. I don't know why so many of you are negative about nice music, and nice veedidio's. Tony Hopkins at his best, Tom Petty at his best, and a good ol' bit of social comment going on. Negative folks should try and do one as good as this!

Tom's last music video, LOVE. So lucky I got to see Mudcrutch in Philly. Incredible show and felt like seeing an alternate history show where the Heartbreakers never were but Mudcrutch did instead. But then i thought somehow we got both. We got lucky when we met Tom...FAREWELL

Such a great song and video. Who knew Mudcrutch in 2016 would be the last time I would ever see Tom perform live. All the TBHB and Mudcrutch recordings mean so much since he's been gone. You don't know what you've lost 'til it's gone.
