Yeah, the Time of Titans is what you're thinking of there, that was when the cymeks, human brains in machine bodies, controlled the universe. The butlerian jihad was just the culmination of the human/AI war.
@@johnnyscifiisn’t that from Brian Herbert’s sequel I thought they were widely regarded as but sequels which contradict what frank Herbert was originally going for
@@HUNCHO_STEPPER They're "paperback" novels. The writing and the themes are juvenile compared to Frank's work. I read a few of them and they remind me of those "Star Trek" books that you can read in an afternoon.
As a massive dune encyclopedia enthusiast and a fan of Frank’s original 6 novels, I must back this video for speaking out against the version made by Brian because Brian got it absolutely wrong. In Brian’s version it is an entire sentient machine rebellion, in the original the quote stands: “once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free… but that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.” The Butlerian Jihad was launched out of fear of humanity as much as machines, and you know what “thinking machines” really were? GPS, Smartphones, gaming consoles, Calculators, Ship navigation systems, basic home computers, anything networked with multiple systems, robot servants in the shape of humans but more a kin to a roomba or Alexa in function. There was no machine uprising as described by Brian, it was out of fear that through thinking machines, powerful men would enslave man through thinking machines as the quote explains. Thousands of human lives were lost entirely to human hands as the jihad was not a universally accepted idea, plenty of people were fine where they were and didn’t see a need for radical change. There were battles in the jihad between humans and only humans over this issue. They’re mentioned in the encyclopedia, like the blockade of Illerda where the planetary government had to surrender their world to the Jihad after they had been starved out by the radical forces. Or how about the elephant in the room, Jehanne Butler, was killed at the battle of Carthagos by a human mine that destroyed her ship while the jihad fleet was attempting to siege the moon of Carthagos. After she died, the jihad fleet exterminated the planet out of bloodlust in its entirety. Like all you have to do is read the encyclopedia to realize that the Jihad was war of ideology rather than survival. All thinking machines were destroyed out of fear of societal enslavement similar to 1984. I could go on but I’m hoping you see the point, it was a war between humans about machines and their place in society, not a war between humans and machines about the survival of one. Brian’s version unfortunately throws all of this away and takes all the wind out of the sails for it. The war means so much more for human nature when you realize they did it to themselves. In a machine rebellion instance, humanity has this almost ‘free pass’ because it’s against extinction from a force not of its own, so that weirdly justifies it. And it makes me very angry because all of Dune is about human nature and changing times and evolution of ideology through the ages. The Jihad is no different in the original. But humanity doesn’t learn or have much of a role to play at all in Brian’s world where the machines rebelled, that is now fight for survival where humanity was willingly enslaving sentient minds and committing horrible acts because yes, it really is kind of worthless to me by comparison because of how lack luster it is. Now to finish out, I read the oringials and the encyclopedia first and after a million dates and events were changed and delivered in a fashion that either missed the mark or became something it wasn’t, I wiped my hands of the Brian Herbert books. For me the encyclopedia is the prequels. However I don’t want to tell you what you can and cannot read. Your opinion is your own, I’m not going to shame you for likes and interests and I in fact encourage you to have them and read what you would like to read. however my opinion is that they’re a separate alternate dune universe. I have said my piece and i hope the new show does not do the “machine rebellion bit” again that is at this point exhausted in media.
😂 short do you think the movie would be if Paul would’ve just started telling everybody to kill themselves is enemies would have been dead so quick. The emperor would’ve been dead so quick everybody would’ve been dead literally would not have had to fight much. He’s got the power of the boys, but he doesn’t ever use it at all leaving you to wonder why they even put it in the movie
In the prequel books the Valya and Tula don’t create the Bene Gesserit, Valya creates the fighting style they use and has Tula assassinate one of Vorian Atreides descendants as part of the long running feud between the families. They blame Vorian for their diminished standing on Lankevale as it was he who had Abulurd Harkonnen banished their for cowardice and betrayal at the battle of Corrin. The Harkonnens are related to the Corrinos (formerly Butlers) by Xavier Harkonnen, but took the Butler name after Xavier killed the Grand Patriarch who was secretly a traitor but publically nobody knew this and believed it to be murder In the prequel books this era is meant to be citing it is actually Raquella Berto-Anirul, granddaughter of Vorian Atreides via an illegitimate daughter. She was the first reverend mother and a former sorceress of rossack Brian and Kevin’s efforts are not in anyway close to Franks works, but they’re not awful sci-fi books. Absolutely spot on, the books are great scf-fi novels that aren’t as firmly entrenched in some of Franks over exposition and dense mysticism. It’s a shame they get a bad rep with some fans because Vorian Atreides has a really compelling arc from a son of a cymek to a hero of the Butlerian Jihad and progenitor of both the Bene Gessirit and the blood feud between Harkonnens and Atreides.

Lots of confusion in the video and comments attacking Herbert's son. I am surprised Villeneuve is not attacked as he completely changed Herbert's vision with the portrayal of Chanl as a petulant brat. Sean Young's portrayal was much more accurate. But appears very few actually read all 18 books. Its important to understand the full story. Some clarifications with a few spoilers : 1) Paul is not the Kwisatz Haderach Frank Herbert had someone completely different in mind. Paul does have prescience which is seen by many characters in the book but he is able to calculate the golden path which requires extreme measures to ultimately save humanity against a major extinction threat 2) Xavier Harkonnen was the main hero in that period. He fights the evil Cymek leader Agammemnon Atreides - yes the ancestor to Paul. Cymeks were originally humans who accidentally unleash Omnius the AI that enslaves humanity instead of them in control. They become massive human killing machines with brain canisters trying to get back that control. 3) Vorian Atreides breaks from his dad because of his love for Serena Butler. She triggers the Butlerian jihad where She Voriann and Xavier defeat the AI. Vorian is the central character as he was given a serum of longevity and rhe main target of . 4) Brian's books are full of religious extremism. You clearly needed to mention Manford Torondo. He makes really is the most extreme religious psycho you can meet or Iblis Ginjo an even worse manipulator using religion. 5) the bridge of hrethgir at the battle of Corrin (home planet of the AI and where younget Corrino) is where the split between Atreides / Harkonnens happens. Its Abulard's descendents after a few generations twin sisters who seek revenge on Vorian who is still alive. They join the already existing bene gesserits. The founder of the witches was married to the founder of CHOAM. Yes very complicated but all these characters need to be detailed as they are key to Dune hostory. Plus Norma the first navigator and true inventor of the Holtzman Engime. If they don't have all these characters then this series will not make sense.
Probably because of RUclips AI algorithms flagging words like "jihad" as a problem, potentially getting the video automatically taken down for no good reason. Looks like we actually may need a Butlerian Jihad already...
The Marvels expected us to watch the shows before the movie. Glad HBO is taking the opposite approach of getting the fans interested with movies first.
I'm sorry but except for the visuals of the movie these Dune movies fall extremely short behind the 2000s movies. They fast track it and cut so many important parts, like his dead son, his kickass sister, his moment of enlightenment was not even close to the one from the 2000 movies and Zendaya really dropped the ball with Chani, felt like a rebellious teenager who needs constant attention and care way more about herself than the greater good of her oppressed people. No real backstory to the blue water in relation to Shai Holud. If you had no knowledge about the past movies\book you will really like it. But as one who does, it was a Hugh letdown
Agree with you even more..but remember Dune movie and the many stories of this series is very complicated..making a movie of politics and so many houses would have slowed the. Movie down and possible failure in the sense of making a profit ..WB wanted to make money off their investment and so more likely forced Denise to make it more action based and less on the inner structure of Dune univers e..but heh accept for what it is and accept the story on the screen. ..just add the extra set into reading the book
@@robertnguyen2025 The 2000 movies achieved those elements with 3 1.5 hours movies, sure it was a bit slower, but the new ones are 2.5-3 hours long movies which makes a lot of money for WB. They could milk the cow for another movie and tell a much wider and whole story. Instead they took more overall screen time and did much less. Plus, the stories of his son, sister and Shai Holud relation to the blue waters are pivotal to the lore and if done right, they could make it jam-packed with action, drama and add so much more stakes, character development and depth. Eventually it looked epic but the final result was flat and really underwhelming. I truly believe his sister could become a Huge fan favorite. Not to be whiny but we, cinema fans deserve much more than kickass CGI. Scorcesa cinematic theme parks remark was spot on.

The extended universe books by Brian Herbert (Frank's son) & Kevin J Anderson are fine, but don't expect the heavy religious, philosophical & political themes of Frank's books. They're much pulpier, more like quick read summer beach books (this happened, then this happened, then this happened, ...). And, whoever edited them did a horrible job, not only do they contradict Frank's books, but they contradict their own books (sometimes within the same scene in a book!). But all that said, they can be a fun read: for me it was fun to just be back in the Dune Universe.
They should have set aside some budget money for LIGHTING. Another series shot in the dark so you can't see the budget shortcuts and the lack of acting.
This is a friendly jab, but it never fails to amaze me how Ryan can mispronounce nearly every word that isn't included in the common English vernacular...including the name of his own writer.
The book says, “Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.” So the Butlerian Jihad was humans fighting humans who were using thinking machines to enslave others before Brian Herbert changed it. Also, the Bene Gesserit were not the only ones trying to create a Kwisatz Haderach. The Tleilaxu made their own Kwisatz Haderach.
TV is definitely the only way to do _God Emperor_ -- which is genuinely impossible to adapt as a 3-hour movie. Structure is too nebulous, ideas are too wierd.
The verifiable stats showed that the majority of people liked the end of Game of Thrones just fine. Plenty didn't, and they were very loud about it, but more were fine with it. As much as it wasn't as good as the first 6 srasons.
Concerning that they’re basing this series off the work of the son and Anderson. Those books are so different that Frank’s books it’s better to think of them as an alternate universe.
Lmao..agree with you there ..Frank son created his father note and made it his own . The story he creates seem exactly like what he watched as a kid from other movies and added to make his own mindset satisfaction..Wtf ..the ending for Brian Dune universe making Idaho Duncan cell the true Dune universe Messiah adding his cell to the AI ..WtF! Like he watch Star wars hero and added to his Father Dune ..
I hope the show is great, but S2 of Altered Carbon leaned into the weakest parts of Season 1. I lost interest in Westworld at S3 for the same reasons-the ethical and philosophical dilemmas and questions provoked by S1 and S2 were much more layered. Not to mention the feast of visual symbolism….all of that is what has made the Villenueve Dune movies so wonderful-they provoke more meaningful questions and perspectives over simply tying up loose ends.
Noooop! Noooop worst than that ..full of pothole ..story book made from a 10 years old kid while his Father was writing the second book..more likely his father didn't spend time with Brian and this is Brian way of making sure his own Father work fall to the flame

I’m worried about them adapting the story from anything Brian wrote
I do hope some writer scap some of Brian Story..one of the worst ideas from Frank son..
I am excited - but I do not fully understand dune unfortunately lmao so thanks for videos like this to break it all down
Don’t know if the show will be any good, but your new haircut? Fire!
I still kind of wish they made the show about the book that explores the 12 years between Dune and Dune Messiah. the 12 year gap that is the holy war
I'm looking forward to them completely destroying all of Brian and Kevin's pathetic attempts at world-building.
0% chance this comes out in 2024, been in production hell for years
Am I the only one who loves the Brian Herbert Kevin J Anderson prequels?
If they don't have all these characters then this series will not make sense.
the trailer looks great and on par with the movies. EXCITED AS FUCK
10,000 years before Paul Atreides, yet same culture, same tech, same clothing, same conflicts.... either bad writing or just lazy production.
Can't wait for the Fallout breakdown. Thanks in advance.
I have soooo many questions about the dune universe
Would be here for any and ALL background / more info from dune
Not here..Read the book and your mind will open up
If you get the first novel, there's an appendix/compendium in the back that explains literally everything he just said here but much better.
Why do you call it a crusade when they call it a Jihad in the book?
Probably because of RUclips AI algorithms flagging words like "jihad" as a problem, potentially getting the video automatically taken down for no good reason. Looks like we actually may need a Butlerian Jihad already...
“The Butlerian Jihad”
The Marvels expected us to watch the shows before the movie.
Glad HBO is taking the opposite approach of getting the fans interested with movies first.
We hope the Dune Part 3 would be as successful as the 1st 2.
Why did everyone stopped using the word 'Jihad'?
Because of this generation ..vocal crying of certain words that would inflame other religious ideas..
I can think of a reason or two
I'm sorry but except for the visuals of the movie these Dune movies fall extremely short behind the 2000s movies.
Couldn't agree more.
Dude….i was so stunned after watching part 2…I almost cried. My sons who have listened to me preach to them about dune for 20 years loved it. Couldn’t understand why I was so crushed. I showed them Lynch’s ending and the Sci-fi channel versions…they are like Ohhhhh.
Still can’t believe the changes they made
@@mojorisin2860 I know such a huge missed opportunity! They focused almost solely on the visuals and disregarded one of the best stories ever told. A striking example of everything wrong in modern cinema.
It’s so weird when Star Wars nerds get a hold of a dune movie. Holy shit. Also 100% sure Frank didn’t speak too much of the Butlerian “Jihad”
damn. i love the Monty Python messiah reference
Jihad and Crusade is not the same thing, please use the actual terms from the Book.
Tempted, but if it's based on a BH/KJA book, that's a huge red flag. Their stuff is poorly written fanfiction.
They're terrible. But perhaps the new show will use good writers.
@@ed-te1fp fingers crossed. The concept has potential.
Herbert was the best writer in Sci fi history. Everything else is a step back in writing to me. Even Asimov.
“😂Crusade”
Brian Herbert. Oh. Oh, no.
Just as long as HBO/MAX doesn't put a chicken in it and make it GEH!!!
Great overview
So it's a show based on fanfiction. Gotcha.
6:26 lol ok
The Butlerian Jihas is before that. I don't think they will go deep in that territory.
It's the Butlerian JIHAD
Imagine a Dune version of the Clone Wars series covering the holy war. For adults or at least pg-13 rated
Awesome idea. I'd watch that.
@@ScreenCrush yep. They can take my money. Animated or live action, that’d be a killer show idea.
Noooo STOOOOOP don’t ruin this franchise
Maybe they want the type of people that would sit to boring long process, so the application process is a kind of filter in of itself. 🤷🏾♂️
Every show has so much potential, that’s the sad part of modern media. It all sucks tho in the end.
Will you be doing Fallout videos?!
Atraties and Harcanan fought together during the Jihad
The book says, “Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.”
So the Butlerian Jihad was humans fighting humans who were using thinking machines to enslave others before Brian Herbert changed it.
Also, the Bene Gesserit were not the only ones trying to create a Kwisatz Haderach. The Tleilaxu made their own Kwisatz Haderach.
Reading it like this sounds like there could be some great parallels to be made with the recent rise of AI
Bless the Maker and his water.
Sounds fantastic
TV is definitely the only way to do _God Emperor_ -- which is genuinely impossible to adapt as a 3-hour movie. Structure is too nebulous, ideas are too wierd.
why would they do that with the O's in sisterhood lmao
Honestly nervous for this Denis has set such a high bar with these films and current studios just love to milk things dry
The verifiable stats showed that the majority of people liked the end of Game of Thrones just fine. Plenty didn't, and they were very loud about it, but more were fine with it. As much as it wasn't as good as the first 6 srasons.
Bro got new music
Finally CHOAM on telly
Westworld Season 4 was Ass 💀 why bring someone who worked on that 😂
I rather have a film about the Butlerian Jihad not a show.
I can't believe we're pronouncing "Butlerian" like this.
Noooooo! The Brian Herbert & Kevin J Anderson books are...crap. 🤦🏾♂️
Noooop! Noooop worst than that ..full of pothole ..story book made from a 10 years old kid while his Father was writing the second book..more likely his father didn't spend time with Brian and this is Brian way of making sure his own Father work fall to the flame
What show is at 9:58 ? it is not referenced
Thank you, I wanted to know as well.
That's from the movie 'The Creator' starring John David Washington.
I just want to know if the Great Oxygen Shortage is ever gonna be solved. You know. Where every actor is always out of breath? In every scene? Of every modern movie?
I want to point out that the t-shirt shows them pouring the water of life into the sand. This would kill the worms.
Killing the worm is what gives you The Breakfast Cereal of Life!
Herbert didn't put much into his description of the thinking machines in the majority of the series.
It is curious that our culture is comfortable using the word crusade but not the word jihad, when historically, atrocities have been committed under both names.
Atrocities for different causes.
Cause only one culture has accepted the violence that it committed under the name, the other just wants to kill you if ask questions
Why do you keep using "holy war" and "crusade"? It was a jihad! Don't be a MENAphobe.
