    It's worth noting that there are no confirmed "aliens" in Dune, at least not humanoid ones. Every character and faction we meet is a branch of human, some of which are barely recognizable as such, particularly the Guild Navigators or even this versions depiction of the Harkonnens. It's very much a story about the infinite human potential for good and evil as well as the paradoxes of human nature.

    The original novel is one of my favorite books. I reread it every 5 years or so. In the movie they say that the year is 10,191. What they do not tell you is that they are not using the our calendar. Their calendar starts with a war against thinking machines. The jemis vision was not just symbolic. Paul is metally aging rapidly though hos transition, because he actually lives those timelines. He lives a full timeline with Jemis as a mentor and friend, and so it is heartbreakingly tragic that he has to kill someone who he sees as a friend, but that friendship cannot be reciprocated in the reality he walks. It's how he just knows things, because he lived them in his mind

    Re: Shields and swords: It's also really dangerous to shoot at a ship or personal shield with lasers or charged particle beams. One of three things will happen: the shield absorbs it and you wasted a shot (best case scenario), the shield partially absorbs it and 'burps' out a coronal discharge of energy back in the direction of the beam, becoming a temporary flamethrower pointed right back at you (not the worst case, but it ain't good), or the beam overloads the shield and it explodes, turning your target into a momentary mini-nuke (worst case). There's a small chance whatever was inside the shield will survive the overload. There is very little chance that you were close enough to shoot them and far enough away to not get killed in the blast.
    So, basically, you could try to overload the shields and blow up the ships (and that possibility is why nuclear bombs are not permitted in inter-House warfare upon pain of death, by the Emperor's decree -- never mind that if you use them on Dune, you could disrupt or contaminate Spice production, and then *everyone* would gang up on you if they even suspected you were planning it). But it turns the battlefield into an unpredictable minefield where you and your opponents could get caught up in a chain reaction if you start messing around, so swords and knives are considered the safest and most precise means to go after your opponents.

    • @woodrobin
      @woodrobin 2 месяца назад +11

      @@zachpullara5048 You could, I suppose, but I would imagine there are electronic counter-measures for those. They're effective as little sneaky assassination tools, but you could probably protect against them if you knew they were likely to be deployed in a swarm. Also, due to the ban on thinking machines, they aren't tiny drones. Each one is operated by a human pilot, so you'd need a horde of people to remotely pilot the horde of drones -- so why not just deploy the horde of people?
      In God-Emperor of Dune, Leito II foresaw that he had prevented a possible future where the Ixians (a technologically oriented culture on the planet Ix who tended to defy the Imperial ban on thinking machines and other technologies whenever they thought they could get away with it) developed a type of self-replicating, self-piloting hunter-seeker that replicated out of control and eventually consumed all life in the known universe for raw material to make more hunter-seekers.

In the book it's a test to see if you can rise above your animal instincts to avoid pain, with the knowledge that a single touch from the needle at your neck will kill you. The idea is if you recoil from the pain you touch the needle and die, therefore preserving the evolutionary trajectory the Bene Gesserit have in place. Ryan's / Pavel's inaccuracies are around the 11:00 mark or so. Paul isn't "the one", at least not yet, during the course of the first movie. He's potentially "the one", just as there have been other potential boys/men who could have been "the one", but were determined not to be. Two that were named are Feyd Rautha and Count Hasimir Fenring (the latter of whom was not adapted for the movie). The most recent iteration of the Bene Gesserit's plan is that Feyd Rautha and Lady Jessica's daughter were to have been arranged for marriage, and THEIR son would be the Kwisatz Haderach. But Jessica short-circuited that plan by having a son instead.
    The test was not to show that he is "the one", but to show that he is "human", able to control his impulses more than an animal.
    Everything else is basically right, I think.

    • @JesseArt
      @JesseArt 3 месяца назад +3

      I thought Screen Crush would point out her very specific line "Good luck, Human. I hope you live" and dissect its meaning and intent. A little bit of a miss, but overall, a pretty good summary for those who have yet to read the books.

    • @mitchbarber4748
      @mitchbarber4748 3 месяца назад +14

      And he’s not even the only “one”. As the Reverend Mother alludes to, the BG have other plans, other breeding programs, other contingencies. Lady Jessica’s path was the one closest to bearing fruit, but the BG never limit themselves to one path.
      And men can train in the ways of the BG, but they can never get past what you could call the acolyte level. Only women can transform the water of life and become Reverend Mothers, gaining access to past lives, history and knowledge of the BG. When men try, they die.
      Effectively, a spice overdose gives women access to the past. A different kind of spice overdose gives men access to the future (thus all guild navigators are/were men). The Kwisatz Haderach is someone at the fulcrum between the two, able to access both.

    Kinda glossed over why they destroyed the machines. It was because the AI took over and tried to destroy all humans. So they were stuck in a decades long universe spanning war. And when the humans finally won, they destroyed all thinking machines. And outlawed their use.
    It is a very complicated story. And honestly fell off for me after book 3 or 4 i think. The prequel books were good though. And tell how the atreides harkonnen fued began. 10,000 years before. As well as the beginnings of Duncan Idaho's bloodline.

    In the novel "Dune", Duke Leto is described as having dark olive skin, and that the Atreidies are darker in skin tone than the Fremen. I've heard some rather simplistic interpretations of the Dune Saga as a 'what savior' story. I don't want to give spoilers, but Paul is not exactly the savior of the Fremen. Plus, remember that the Fremen are a technological people hindered by their environment. Their superstitions were planted by the Bene Geserit to make them easier to exploit. And Paul exploits the hell out of them, making him less of a savior, and more of an antihero. And Paul IS NOT 'the one'. In the David Lynch, version, he most definitely is. But Denis Villeneuve is a lot more faithful to the spirit of the novels, and so he knows that Paul is NOT the Fremen's savior. Frank Herbert wanted Dune to be a cautionary tale, that one should beware of Messiahs.

      I think the comparison is for casual watchers who didn't read the books - the Star Wars movies came before the Dune movies as did the GoT series. The assumption is most people who saw those two franchises will also be interested in the Dune movies, and it provides a quick and easy reference so viewers can understand the context.
      What was said in the video is absolutely what someone might think watching Dune pt 1 if they had not read the books before but had seen Star Wars.
      I understand your point that it's important to identify the source material, but for the sake of simply understanding it I think the video does a great job!

    Ummm, mankind didn't ban computers in order to evolve. It also isn't possible to travel faster than light in Dune without spice, even with computers. They banned computers because the AI rebelled against them. It was called the Machine Crusade, and it would have been just as amazing or more amazing than the Dune movies. Basically imagine Terminator, but on an interstellar scale. At the start the humans were losing, but it wasn't possible to travel faster than light, so it was a war that took decades for AI ships to wipe out one planet after another. But then humans discover how useful spice is. Imagine skynet in space trying to fight back when they don't know what planet humans will attack next, and the humans know if they will lose or win each of those fights.

    Correction on the Starks and Lannisters having an ancient bloody feud: they absolutely do not, and did not. Ned Stark was unfairly judgmental against Jamie for being a dishonorable king slayer. And then at the start of the show Petyr Baelish set the houses up to feud by making the Starks believe that the Lannisters were behind John Arryn’s death, while he was in fact the true killer. The Lannisters were cold, and Brandon was just unlucky to have come across Jamie and Cersei in the tower; but they really had nothing against House Stark. Literally rewinding the clock to before Robert’s Rebellion I think uncovers no serious hostility between the two houses.
    Unfortunately HBO show writers are becoming so shallow, they’re letting the audiences understand infiltrate the universe so I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the prequel shows pretends like Lannisters and Starks are natural enemies.
    Anyways, back to Dune!
