    It’s also of note that this whole transfer of who controls Dune was a play from the Emperor to weaken BOTH houses. The Baron had to spend considerable funds and lives to retake the planet.

      Yup, there are three basic types of power in this universe. Economic, military and political. The Atreides had a lot of political and military power, the Harkonnens had a lot of economic power. The Emporer was able to get the Harkonnens to wipe out the Atreides (almost), in a way that diminished most of their economic power.

    Another thing that should be mentioned about spice is that it is literally what makes space travel possible for the Empire. The navigators from the Spacing Guild are heavily mutated humans that are have the ability to set courses to other planets and see the potential hazards for the voyage. They’ve gotten all of this power and mutations from spice. Without the flow of spice, there would be no traveling from planet to planet.

    I now realize why there are all these “explainer” dune videos all of a sudden, the Movie, while beautiful, it was without…explanation…except still suits, they explained them to a point but stopped short. The character’s motivations are unknown, why would Leto say “I should have married you…” how are we not to assume they aren’t married? They have a son and share a bed, and there is no explanation at all of their very complicated and ancient relationship.
    I know because I know Dune, a new viewer would not know 30k years of history, why the fremen are who they are, why Paul’s birth was an issue(we are told it was an issue but not why), why the spice is even important, we are told briefly and not shown how the spice infuses and shaped society …it’s all glossed over… with expansive views and a lot of silence…Doctor Yueh was a footnote, Duncan had even less “character development” then the first movie! Was any of it bad no, just vapid.

      I just saw it yesterday, and I thought they did a decent job with exposition.
      All movies based on novels have to trim plotlines to fit the main story into what is essentially a short-story format, and Dune is a really flipping long, dense, complicated novel with a huge number of minor subplots going on. A lot was going to get trimmed, no matter what. It's simply necessary.
      Most of the reviews I've seen from professional critics are actually complaining that it spends TOO MUCH time on dense, info-dump expository dialogue in between actual events that move the story along--but personally I think they managed to strike a reasonable balance.
      We know (just from the movie) what a Kwisatz Haderach is, why the Bene Gesserit want to create one, and that Paul might be one but he's not really supposed to be due to Jessica disobeying orders.
      I think that's enough for Paul's origin story, which is what the movie aims to be.
      The Fremen are barely in it, so I assume explanation of the relevant aspects of their culture is waiting for Part 2 when they become the central focus.
      It won't be as detailed or comprehensive as what the book tells you, because that's impossible.
      But I thought this movie did a much better job explaining what was supposed to be happening than, say, the last three Star Wars movies. And this isn't a sequel to six other movies that everyone in the audience has presumably seen.

    • @epiccollision
      @epiccollision 2 года назад

      @@jim4686 you are correct I mistyped my intention I meant character development but my brain went with screen time, he had a more substantial presence on screen but we don’t know why he fought for this family so tenaciously…they barley spoke to each other. that’s not to say this movie is some sort of failure, it’s not it just could have been brighter and more focused and less scenes of ear condensation and sand blowing over dunes while looking at characters watching sand blow over dunes. There was a lot of unnecessary desert porn.

    Some years ago, I called George RR Martin the "poor man's" Frank Herbert. Of course, I was joking, but now, I don't really think I was joking! Having read Dune and a Song of Ice and Fire years ago, I could see the clear similarities in these stories. However, over the years, with TV show, book re-reads and new films, those similarities became far clearer! I'm not trying to take anything away from George Martin, but the influences, which he has never acknowledged publicly, is absolutely evident in Frank Herbert's Dune. Here are just a few...
    These two stories begin with both leaders of prominent houses, Ned Stark and Leto Artreides uprooting their families across long distances because of a royal request. A move, which subsequently ends up being a trap and ending with the death of the leader of each house. Now on the run from the evil and treacherous house, a young member(s) of the now disbanded house, have to go into hiding, fight their way through loads of danger, only to end up living among some so-called, "lesser" which of course, helps them to find themselves and their place; just like Arya, Jon Snow and Paul had to. With their respective houses now destroyed, they all learn to develop skills which will become the stuff of heroes later in the story!
    There are also clear similarities in the houses and what each house represents... House Harkonnen is clearly House Lannister and House Artreides is clearly House Stark. The Space Guild is pretty much the Iron Bank.... Fremen are basically The Free folk, and the Crysknife is pretty much a nod to dragon-glass blade! Then, you have Facedancers and the Faceless men and not to mention that whole inbreeding thing! Of course, dragons are the clear replacement mythical creature for the sandworms. And just like, not everyone can ride a sandworms in Dune, not everyone can ride a dragon in G.O.T.!
    I am going to go out on a limb and guess that by superimposing Tywin Lannister's face onto the emperor's body, it means that you probably see the same similarities that I do. Again, I'm not taking anything away from George Martin... But I believe that I am going to start referring to Dune as "Game of Thrones in Space!" and Game of Thrones as "Medieval Dune!" Anyway, great video! GIANT THUMBS UP!!

    I think the most valuable thing you've done here, is create an almost entirely spoiler-free breakdown for Dune novices. I use Dune as my central text in some of the composition courses I teach, and I find myself endlessly editing my proposed necessary summary of the Dune text/universe so that we can all approach it with equal footing within a given course. That's hard to do without spoiling certain nuances of the story while also remaining concise, but I think you've achieved both of those qualities here.

They also have a long-term view of events measured in millennia because their leaders, the Reverend Mothers, have access to all of their ancestral memories on the female side throughout the history of humanity--meaning that a Reverend Mother knows everything that her mother, her grandmothers, their mothers and grandmothers, and so on back through time all knew.

    The political system of the empire in Dune is heavily inspired by of that of the medieval Holy Roman Empire (HRE). Even the term "Landsraad" clearly has a medieval German/Dutch root, just like you'd expect from the HRE.
    The HRE also had a council of noble families who had their own fiefdoms with a high degree of autonomy. Their leaders had various titles like "duke", "baron", or "prince", just like in the Dune empire and they officially elected the emperor, though often this was just a rubberstamp because an imperial house was so powerful (though never powerful enough to take on all the other houses combined, again just like in Dune) it simply had their male heir of choice confirmed by the electors.
    The HRE didn't have the Bene Gesserit but in many the Catholic Church had a similar role.
    Interestingly the HRE was torn apart in the 17th century (and never really recovered) by the Thirty Years War, a religious civil war between catholics and protestants that killed a significant portion of the population. I guess that's something that stuck with Frank Herbert in history class.

    • @Niniene
      @Niniene 2 года назад +70

      And, of course, the Bene Gesserit were based upon the Jesuits (hence the similar name). They didn't exist in the HRE, but substitute the Dominicans (or any other order) and...

    • @davidwuhrer6704
      @davidwuhrer6704 2 года назад +54

      There are similarities, and differences. House Corrino rules through military power. The emperor of the HRE was never a great military power, and both elected by a small subset nobles (not a Landsrat) who had inherited that privilege, and also invested by the Catholic pope. The emperor was not always the male progeny of the previous emperor, in part because not all emperors had male progeny. And, unlike kings, the emperor could not invest and divest nobles under his jurisdiction at will. The emperor and the pope jointly invested the bishops of the empire, but only the pope could divest them again.
      The HRE was disbanded by Napoleon Bonaparte in the 18th century. (Purely by military might; he was not a member, let alone the emperor, of the HRE.)
      The Thirty Year War was the most terrible war Europe had ever seen, and inevitably part of the HRE was part of that war. It did not tear apart the empire though. Members of the empire had been at war with each other before and afterwards as well.

    • @gulliverdeboer5836
      @gulliverdeboer5836 2 года назад +47

    Spoiler alert!! Don’t read beyond this if you plan on watching the movie! I found the ending prob the most profound part. The Fremen act as if they could care less if Paul and Jessica existed: EXACTLY as I perceived in the book. Additionally Paul is confused as to what his visions/dreams were about: a life for a new life…until faced with that situation. Then in that instance he sees that it’s not his life to be lost, but rather his death/rebirth after taking a life (a person dies to some degree when taking life, but can be reborn when the act is out of honor). Immediately after, all of the Fremen make a point to touch Paul as he walks by…not necessarily out of compassion but to them something more significant. They were validating him and his decision: ‘we now see you’ ‘we now recognize you as a person who has significant honor’ And you are who we hoped you would be.

      How do you recommend getting into this series? What are the books/shows/movies to watch?

    • @graceskerp
      @graceskerp 2 года назад +1

      @@dawn-blade Sorry for the delay. I didn't read Song of Ice and Fire nor follow GoT that closely, so any contrast/compare will be superficial.
      Firstly, unlike Westeros the noble houses in the Dune universe don't play a large role in the story. They certainly do fight among themselves, but they wisely make no play for imperial power. The Emperor's Sardaukars make sure they behave themselves. The most ambitious and dangerous is House Harkonnen.
      Another compare: Dune is filled with characters who have their own agendas and goals.
      Finally Dune has an important fringe group which everyone ignores or dismisses until they show up at the front door. They're led by a charismatic individual who succeed in kicking in the door, but with dire results for both himself and the empire.
      Getting into the series: OK, start with the book. It's a dense read, certainly not a weekend or beach book, but it is worth the effort.
      Films: Lynch's fundamental problem is the story can not be told in one feature film, just too much background and characters. If you can find it, there's the SyFy's version. It has its problems, doubtful casting choices and the budget definitely shows in the special effects and sets. However, it's far more faithful to the narrative than Lynch's.
      Finally, check Quinn's Ideas and Nerd Cookies TY videos. They both do excellent analyses of all things Dune.

      It's legal for the houses to target eachother in battle, just rarely done.
