I always found it interesting that there weren't non-guild space travelers. Interstellar travel is still possible without Navigators, but there's a 10% chance the ship will be lost in every trip. That's certainly a massive risk but human greed has never been stopped by massive risk. There are periods in human history when almost half of mercantile and exploratory ships were lost. But the profit from such undertakings was so great that people were willing to take that risk.
Noone who would have the resources has the need for it. Because the Guild is good at keeping everyone else comfortable with the Guild. The only party that could have both the means and the cause would be Ix, perhaps. And I am not sure about their motivation... Bene Tleilax has the obvious motivation, but they probably don't have the technical capability to make a ship that can "jump".
Ngl but Quinn's casual tone in these latest video is awesome. I was used to the super serious tone from the former videos, but hearing him just explaining the lore in a casual way to newcomers the way you would do at a party to some friends is refreshing. Keep that attitude and tone Quinn, imho, it's way more appealing to people eager to know more.

The duplicity and mistruths found in SOME politics and organized religion. We ought to be careful with blanket statements put forth as all-encompassing fact.
When talking about how manipulative the Bene Gesserit are, you need to remember that they're largely atheistic and have an entire branch, the Missionaria Protectiva, designed to deliberately manipulate WHOLE RELIGIONS to make their beliefs more favorable to the Bene Gesserit. They also have a long-term view of events measured in millennia because their leaders, the Reverend Mothers, have access to all of their ancestral memories on the female side throughout the history of humanity--meaning that a Reverend Mother knows everything that her mother, her grandmothers, their mothers and grandmothers, and so on back through time all knew.
Its not just the memories of the women but also the fathers and grandfathers who are breed for their genetics toward the goal of Kwisatz Haderach. See children of Dune and God Emporor of Dune to begin to understand why the Bene Gesserit test for humanity and kill those who fail the test.

I tried to read Dune so many times, but it was just too dense. The movie blew me away, and you've been the perfect guide to finally getting into the series
First two books are completely worth it, the other four of the main series are way denser and not as interesting. The ladder 8 books are great for simplicity since they are written by frank herberts son who was not as great a writer
@@EsotericCat The first 3 books written by Frank are Paul's story. God Emperor of Dune is the story of Paul's son, Leto II. The next two books focus on the Bene Gesserit, who have come to power 1500 years later. Frank died before finishing what was to be the final novel. Then his son and Keven J. Anderson saw $$$$$, pretended to find "notes", and wrote copious amounts of bullshit that prove that if the notes existed, they were not followed, they don't understand the source material, and write for an audience that like explodey stuff and blood/guts/gore - but no intelligent philosophy that will make people debate it decades after.
As someone who’s reading dune, this was really helpful! Just like when i first read GOT, the first book has a lot of new information that is hard to keep up with and easy to get mixed up. This simplified a lot!
The political system of the empire in Dune is heavily inspired by of that of the medieval Holy Roman Empire (HRE). Even the term "Landsraad" clearly has a medieval German/Dutch root, just like you'd expect from the HRE. The HRE also had a council of noble families who had their own fiefdoms with a high degree of autonomy. Their leaders had various titles like "duke", "baron", or "prince", just like in the Dune empire and they officially elected the emperor, though often this was just a rubberstamp because an imperial house was so powerful (though never powerful enough to take on all the other houses combined, again just like in Dune) it simply had their male heir of choice confirmed by the electors. The HRE didn't have the Bene Gesserit but in many the Catholic Church had a similar role. Interestingly the HRE was torn apart in the 17th century (and never really recovered) by the Thirty Years War, a religious civil war between catholics and protestants that killed a significant portion of the population. I guess that's something that stuck with Frank Herbert in history class.
And, of course, the Bene Gesserit were based upon the Jesuits (hence the similar name). They didn't exist in the HRE, but substitute the Dominicans (or any other order) and...
There are similarities, and differences. House Corrino rules through military power. The emperor of the HRE was never a great military power, and both elected by a small subset nobles (not a Landsrat) who had inherited that privilege, and also invested by the Catholic pope. The emperor was not always the male progeny of the previous emperor, in part because not all emperors had male progeny. And, unlike kings, the emperor could not invest and divest nobles under his jurisdiction at will. The emperor and the pope jointly invested the bishops of the empire, but only the pope could divest them again. The HRE was disbanded by Napoleon Bonaparte in the 18th century. (Purely by military might; he was not a member, let alone the emperor, of the HRE.) The Thirty Year War was the most terrible war Europe had ever seen, and inevitably part of the HRE was part of that war. It did not tear apart the empire though. Members of the empire had been at war with each other before and afterwards as well.
@@davidwuhrer6704 House Corrino didn't rule through military means: it's literally said that the combined military power of the Landsraad would overpower House Corrino, just like in the HRE. The Ottonian and Habsburg dynasties definitely had powerful armies of their own. I'm unsure why you think the Landsraad is anything other than a small group of select nobles.
This is the perfect “explain dune to me in 5 minutes” video. It misses a lot of the details and some of the history, but for the sake of brevity it serves as a great foundation.
@@StayFractalesque He didn't "miss" anything, he just explained everything that NEEDED to be explained for the context of THIS movie alone. Not unnecessary explanation that would confuse people.
As a fan of the book, the 1984 movie, the mini-series, and now Dune (2021) you masterfully summarized the politics of the Dune universe so well. What a great primer for both the old and new fans alike. Excellently done.
Quinn one of your older Dune videos got me into reading all the books and I just wanna say thanks! I love your content and I am so happy to see so many views on this vid. GJ!
Another thing that should be mentioned about spice is that it is literally what makes space travel possible for the Empire. The navigators from the Spacing Guild are heavily mutated humans that are have the ability to set courses to other planets and see the potential hazards for the voyage. They’ve gotten all of this power and mutations from spice. Without the flow of spice, there would be no traveling from planet to planet.
It would actually… in theory. I don’t know if the holtzmann engines run on spice, need spice to function or if only a navigator can operate them, but assuming the navigator only points the way, you could technically just yolo it and run in blind without guidance accepting the fact you most probably won’t make it to the finish line.
@@Ballin4VengeanceOnly the Navigators need spice to see a safe page, the engines are all tech. In the prequel novels they did that during the AI war to win, use Holtzman engines in a blind jump. The attrition rate was about 10%per jump.
The only other big detail that's worth mentioning (but barely addressed in the books) is that the Great Houses provide a substantial check on the Emperor's power by having independent access to nuclear weapons. They've banned them among themselves, but towards the end of _Dune_ it's heavily implied that if the Landsraad became aware of the crimes the Imperial House committed against Atreides, they would likely waive their prohibition of nuclear warfare in order to sink Corrino.
I just finished the first book last week and watched the movie yesterday. This was an excellent explanation. You actually cleared up a few details from the book too. You earned my sub my man. :)

your videos have always performed well but i'm so glad the views are spiking with its theatrical release. this series is phenomenal, and your channel truly does it justice. thank you for sharing your passion
Spoiler alert!! Don’t read beyond this if you plan on watching the movie! I found the ending prob the most profound part. The Fremen act as if they could care less if Paul and Jessica existed: EXACTLY as I perceived in the book. Additionally Paul is confused as to what his visions/dreams were about: a life for a new life…until faced with that situation. Then in that instance he sees that it’s not his life to be lost, but rather his death/rebirth after taking a life (a person dies to some degree when taking life, but can be reborn when the act is out of honor). Immediately after, all of the Fremen make a point to touch Paul as he walks by…not necessarily out of compassion but to them something more significant. They were validating him and his decision: ‘we now see you’ ‘we now recognize you as a person who has significant honor’ And you are who we hoped you would be.
That scene flagrantly deviates from the book, in that the fight takes place in the open and also not in underwear. It doesn't make as much sense, but it is more dramatic this way. I find Jessica's answer to Stilgar's inquiry unsatisfying. It makes sense, but the audience might not realise that her answer is not the actual reason why Paul fights the way he fights.
Paul is validated 3 times in the movie. His test with the Reverend Mother confirmed that he is not a mere instinct based man and has deeper thoughts than expected of men. His near-death with the Hunter Seeker showed that he was not the careless fool he was earlier and then when meeting the Fremen he is accepted as one who exists within their circle.
@@SantomPh I don't understand. Surely Lady Jessica would know her own son, and that the still suits aren't shielded. In the book they even fought in their underwear.
Hey this was really good. One part that I think wasn't mentioned is the Fremen - the natives of Dune who have their own mysticisms and prophecies that tie in very strongly to the story. I also just realized that Fremen breaks down to "free-men", one code I hadn't noticed before.
tbf the fremen religion and mysticism is mostly just the bene Gesserit's tampering. Before the Atreides arrive on Arrakis, the fremen are very much removed from the politics of the imperium
Great video as always man. I heard that the CHOAM were comparable to OPEC but honestly you comparing CHOAM to Amazon makes a lot more sense. I always wondered if maybe the noble houses had their origins as the families of CEOs, Executives, and Board Members of various economic cabals. Gotta love the constant backstabbery (that's a word now) and manipulation in Dune.
I'm not sure it's a shame or a good move that they didn't really bring up the CHOAM shareholders and Noble/imperial House venn diagram being basically a circle.
It's nobles houses then 'CEOs, Executives, and Board Members of various economic cabals', because capitalism evolved from feudalism to mercantilism and finally today's imperialism/capitalism. Up until 1900ish most/all British Prime Ministers had been Lords.

Very well done. I really hope the Prequel Series will show in full detail how powerful the Bene Gesserit are and how the Imperium wouldn't exist without them. Loved the point of how the Baron Harkonen and Duke Leto are products of the cross breeding program of the Bene Gesserit.
I always had the impression that Caladan was the ancestral home of the Atreides(es?), and their “ownership” of it was deeper than simply being assigned to it by the Imperium… same with the Harkonnens on Geidi Prime. Arrakis was a special case, with no Great House of its own, where stewardship was assigned. am I wrong?
I don't actually know but this is how I see it too. It seemed to me that all great houses have their own 'home planet' besides the planets they are charged with. The Corrino family being somewhat of an exception bc they messed up their original home world but since they are the emperor family they just took another.
@@lizajameson7339 - seems like 10,000 years is enough to establish ancestry… my point being, wouldn’t the people of Caladan still be loyal to the Atreides(es), rather than the house appointed to replace them? also, follow-up question… why did the Harkonnens get Arrakis AND Geidi Prime, when it seemed like the Atreideses had to give up Caladan to take control of Arrakis?

I love how the book feels like ancient history despite being sci-fi set thousands of years into the future. This empire feels so small compared to maybe the empire in star wars or even the federation in star trek.
It's not small at all, we just don't have a lot of info precisely on how big it is and and other, minor houses. What we know for sure from the second book is that there are over 10.000 planets colonized by humans, hundreds of billions of people, maybe thousands of billions humans.
@@pedroeldiablo811 thats huge, but (pretty well thought out) estimates from the star wars empire say there's about 100 quadrillion citizens. That's 100 billion times a billion. I guess in that comparison the dune universe seems a bit small.
Lmao 😂, nothing absolutely nothing could be further from the truth A single guild highliner could beat the entirety of the starwars and star trek Dune is small because all living humans are addicted to spice which allows a small group to control what is otherwise impossible to control, dune is a universal empire, starwars and star trek would probably be isolated and ignored . With analogies of who is the "real power in King's Landing," which Houses are the underdogs/most unpredictable, who is most ambitious etc.? I know nothing about the Dune universe. How do you recommend getting into this series? What are the books/shows/movies to watch?
@@dawn-blade Sorry for the delay. I didn't read Song of Ice and Fire nor follow GoT that closely, so any contrast/compare will be superficial. Firstly, unlike Westeros the noble houses in the Dune universe don't play a large role in the story. They certainly do fight among themselves, but they wisely make no play for imperial power. The Emperor's Sardaukars make sure they behave themselves. The most ambitious and dangerous is House Harkonnen. Another compare: Dune is filled with characters who have their own agendas and goals. Finally Dune has an important fringe group which everyone ignores or dismisses until they show up at the front door. They're led by a charismatic individual who succeed in kicking in the door, but with dire results for both himself and the empire. Getting into the series: OK, start with the book. It's a dense read, certainly not a weekend or beach book, but it is worth the effort. Films: Lynch's fundamental problem is the story can not be told in one feature film, just too much background and characters. If you can find it, there's the SyFy's version. It has its problems, doubtful casting choices and the budget definitely shows in the special effects and sets. However, it's far more faithful to the narrative than Lynch's. Finally, check Quinn's Ideas and Nerd Cookies TY videos. They both do excellent analyses of all things Dune.

This is a great video for new fans and I’ll definitely be sharing it so they don’t have to hear me talk for hours about DUNE’s depiction of human politics, or Frank Herbert’s subtle commentary of the fallibility of human leaders. You should do a 5 minute video on fighting / warriors of DUNE! The Sardakaur are superb warriors not just because of excellent training, but because of the brutality of life on the prison planet of Salusa Secondus. It’s implied that the Fremen are their equal if not superior because of the equally harsh environment of DUNE, the influence of the Spice on Fremen biology, and their strong religious beliefs / culture of dueling, such as Paul’s fight against Jamis. Paul himself has been trained his whole life as a fighter in the Atreides tradition (Duke’s son), trained by a sword master (Duncan), with the mental agility of a mentat (Hawat), and the superior conditioning of Bene Gessirt mother. If DUNE: Part 2 doesn’t have some more anti-Harkonnen raiding by the Fremen, I’ll be so disappointed!
Politics never changes. It's all about power and influence and powerful people getting more power. While normal people are just expendable pawns in the game of chess.
This is true even for the noble Atriedes. The books actually shows how ruthless and manipulative they are to the populace too. They are best described as benevolent dictators.

Quinn has the best Dune content, and really helped reignite my love for the books. Im so excited for part 2
(Purely by military might; he was not a member, let alone the emperor, of the HRE.)
The Thirty Year War was the most terrible war Europe had ever seen, and inevitably part of the HRE was part of that war.

Without the flow of spice, there would be no traveling from planet to planet.
dune is all about space crack
It would actually… in theory.
I don’t know if the holtzmann engines run on spice, need spice to function or if only a navigator can operate them, but assuming the navigator only points the way, you could technically just yolo it and run in blind without guidance accepting the fact you most probably won’t make it to the finish line.
@@Ballin4VengeanceOnly the Navigators need spice to see a safe page, the engines are all tech. In the prequel novels they did that during the AI war to win, use Holtzman engines in a blind jump. The attrition rate was about 10%per jump.

You definitely commented that before watching the video
The only other big detail that's worth mentioning (but barely addressed in the books) is that the Great Houses provide a substantial check on the Emperor's power by having independent access to nuclear weapons. They've banned them among themselves, but towards the end of _Dune_ it's heavily implied that if the Landsraad became aware of the crimes the Imperial House committed against Atreides, they would likely waive their prohibition of nuclear warfare in order to sink Corrino.
This is brilliant. Particularly your use of real world examples to illustrate the concepts within the books/films.

dude, this makes so much sense, currently reading the book and somewhat confused at times, but you summed it up great and now it all makes sense
Very cool analysis!
@@davidwuhrer6704 Jessica can't tell him "Paul is used to using a shield" since she has no idea who he is or how the Fremen fight.

tbf the fremen religion and mysticism is mostly just the bene Gesserit's tampering.

Not wrong. You are 100% right.
They were assigned to it around 1500 years ago. Before them, it belonged to another house and the Atreides were a minor house millennia before that.
@@lizajameson7339 - seems like 10,000 years is enough to establish ancestry…

It's not small at all, we just don't have a lot of info precisely on how big it is and and other, minor houses. What we know for sure from the second book is that there are over 10.000 planets colonized by humans, hundreds of billions of people, maybe thousands of billions humans.
@@pedroeldiablo811 thats huge, but (pretty well thought out) estimates from the star wars empire say there's about 100 quadrillion citizens. That's 100 billion times a billion. I guess in that comparison the dune universe seems a bit small.

I just left the theater and I’m still going OMG and wow! This movie made me so happy! Some truly Shakespearean scenes. I’m heading back tomorrow to watch it again!
My gosh dude, you are a god! I hope you are feeling JOY that Dune was not made poorly, like Foundation appears to be.
Considering your effort and knowledge of all things Dune, you deserve some Joy. (i loved it-better on 2nd watch) Take care.
Thank you for this video. Dune has been on my list to read for a few years but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. Saw the movie recently and this video has really helped.
I search for an explanation and I found it now I need to watch it twice. Thank you.
They're going to cast Doug Jones as Edric in Dune: Messiah. Mark my words
Wow ... that would be perfection.
Or Andy Serkis
@@MagicRobot95 ... was thinking of him as I left my reply because honestly, I think he's more likely to get the job.
THAT would be amazing!!
If I recall correctly David Dastmalchian said that he got a preview of what the navigators will look like and they are totally inhuman in appearance. They are going to be extremely elongated, which, to be fair, fits Doug Jones to a tee
I love your channel... but I'm going to avoid watching your videos until I've seen the new film! 😆
Really looking forward to your upcoming CHAPTERHOUSE DUNE video! 👍
But SEE it soon! It’s excellent!
The movie is a great ad to read the books…looked stunning, not a lot of substance…they glossed over spice!
If you are avoiding Quinn's video but you are anticipating the CHAPTERHOUSE DUNE video then you are a little late - you are officially a Dune aficionado!
I have a suggestion for a new video. You could talk about economy in the Dune series, the role if CHOAM and about Mercantilism (economic system).
"The Economy of Dune Explained In FIVE Minutes"
I love the video you did yesterday. I hope theirs more to come.
Super fast, straight to the point, only needed info, thank you. Liked and subscribed
The lore of Dune makes me think someone could make a really badass video game in the Dune Universe. Surprised someone hasn't tried it yet. GREAT VIDEO!!
there is one. Its called warhammer
@@incognitonotsure909 wait a minute, your telling me Warhammer is based on the Dune series?!?!?! NO WAY!!
@@DarthRaver-og7qq nope, not literally. But it copied so much from Dune that it might as well be.
Really great content it helped me a lot in understanding the context of the movie. Idk if this is possible but if you can when you are talking about the various connections between factions having an illustrative chart would help show the various political connections. For example when you were discussing the connections between various houses in the imperium and their level of influnece in the choam company etc. If this is possible that would be great if not oh well you're still producing great content thanks.
Pretty amazing actually how well all of this was conveyed in the movie without a lot of unnatural expository dialogue.
PHENOMENAL film and a masterpiece of modern sci-fi cinema entirely! LOVE this movie for what it was able to achieve and be and I’m so glad many others agree for what it was able to achieve!
Cool vid man, well explained. commenting for the algorithm cause this channel deserves to be seen :)
Well done. It is nicely summarized, accurate and well-explained.
A very nice and simple explanation. Thank you!
As soon as I got my notification .... bam, I’m here 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Not quite on topic but I do believe this movie was one of the most stylish creations to be put on film. Alot of it felt like a very high end fashion show and no one was more stylish than Benjamin Clementine (pictured in the thumbnail). Highly recommend watching him in the “Hallelujah Money” music video by Gorillaz. It’s very cool and powerful. He reminds me alot of Sindey Poitier and I would love to see him in similar roles or just more in general. They picked a very visually and charismatically enigmatic cast that really made the feel and vision of the movie it’s own (even though I wasn’t the biggest fan of it’s interpretation)
Just found you. With out a doubt the most informative vid on this subject. Thanks doing all the work. Huge thumbs up.
Dude I just started re-reading the series and this by far was the best explanation of all the moving pieces in Dune. Great job!
After waiting 3+ years for this movie, I FINALLY seen it lasternight! Ig what a masterpiece! Its Game of Thrones ( in space) / Star wars. ( oh sht your talking about Game of Thrones right now, so you see it too). The visuals were incredible! the dragonfly ships are gorgeous, I love those ships so much! THE designs for everything are so good. The only negative is how the movie ends. I know its only the first half of the book, so that's why but oh its bugging me!waited 3 years and now gunna be another long wait to see what happens. That is IF a sequel is green lit, so people PLEASE support this film, we need more
Dune is not Game of Thrones in Space. Game of Thrones is medieval Dune with dragons. ;)
Thanks so much for this man! I’m a beginner to the series, and like you said I kept saying to myself “what the heck is going on??!?” 🤣
But I really dug it and was surprised how emotionally captivated I was watching it. Anyway thank you for explaining this, because it makes so much more sense now. I’m looking fwd to my 2nd viewing. Thanks again
🙏👍
I love that one of the members of Daft Punk was an extra in this very scene! Peace and amor bro
Hey man, beautiful channel! 🚀
Thank you for the thought-provoking, informative content!
