    Perhaps I grew up in unfashionable days when pride and self respect were still considered desirable qualities, but whenever I hear about "establishing a relationship with a salesman" to purchase something, it makes me cringe. If there is a price, and I bring the money, and the salescritter wants me to crawl up his a##, I say f# 'em, there are other fish in the sea.

    • @JizzyNinja

      Yo I totally agree, it is so fucking sad to see people talk about AD relationships and the lengths they go. Like taking them out to dinner, thinking it will get you watch😬

    • @lonewolfemcquade8133
      @lonewolfemcquade8133 2 года назад +4

      Agreed 👍 it's total bullshit. If they think I'm going to do that just to take my money it's not happening. I rather pay after market prices before I stoop to that level but then again I have a Explorer 1 that I got back in 2007. That was nothing like it is today

    • @djjr9803
      @djjr9803 2 года назад +1

      It all depends on the market. Any (luxury) product that is sold through an independent distributor (ie the AD for Rolex) where demand significantly exceeds supply requires a potential buyer to find ways to become a preferred customer for the seller (ie the distributor). Anything else is delusional. Put yourself in the shoes of the AD. How would YOU decide who to sell the next hot SS Rolex to ? And don't tell me it is "first come first serve".

    • @JizzyNinja
      @JizzyNinja 2 года назад +10

      @@djjr9803 I disagree that any luxury product fundamentally means the buyer has to find some way to be preferred. I understand the position of the ADs, but we are talking about mass produced products when it comes to Rolex, not some hand made boots that have a strict production capacity due to the limited folks who can make them. We have second hand dealers showcasing dozens of “limited supply” products at once, I have a hard time seeing this as a pure supply and demand issue and all evil individuals flippers supplying them and not the ADs themselves.
      I understand the difficult spot ADs are in, however, the luxury shopping experience is having a nice drink while looking at products in a nice space, not taking the fucking salesman out to dinner after you where in a store with nothing in display, in the hopes that eventually they will pull something out the back for you.
      So I guess there are two sides of luxury now - those who enjoy being treated well as part of the buying experience as they spend their hard earned money on something special, and those who want to eat some salesman asshole for the honor of spending their hard earned cash on a mass produced product. There are so many better options out there in this specific case too, that I’m not necessarily blaming ADs (specifically who aren’t selling to grey market) but rather the sad customers who think it’s luxurious to be treated like shit to be parted with thousands of dollars. It’s just not a luxurious experience.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 2 года назад +8

      @@djjr9803 "where demand significantly exceeds supply" - But herein lies the key. It is all an illusion. It is not a necessity, and it is not even a truly rare, handcrafted item that simply cannot be had in greater quantity. The scarcity is only in the mind of the buyer. It is a spell, a trick. The moment you stop believing in the spell, it disappears.

    I got a Pepsi from my AD at retail a little over a week ago. I also got a Sea Dweller in May 2021 (same AD). I waited 2 years for the Sea Dweller and 3 years for the Pepsi. Went into my AD monthly to visit and talk watches. The Sea Dweller was my 1st purchase. I did buy (2) Panerai’s in between the Sea Dweller and the Pepsi which likely contributed to the Pepsi allocation.

I think it better compares to the Sea Dweller rather than the Submariner but it is head an shoulders better than both in terms of quality, in my opinion. Good points, especially about FF and SD being more comparable. I can believe that the FF's sapphire bezel is more scratch resistent than the SD's ceramic. But the SD's movement is probably as tough as a Timex's. Sadly, as Charlie Munger states (and as I experienced), you can't wear a Rolex for fear to being robbed. For that reason perhaps the FF makes more sense for everyday wear.

    What I'll be saying here may be controversial to the watch community and is open to further discussion. I strongly believe that the earth's sustainability agenda should not only be the burden of big players such as Renewable Energy and EV car industries, but that the watch industry can make a huge contribution to greening the planet and lowering its carbon footprint by CEASING the production and sale of battery powered quartz watches. Instead, it should promote heavily the sale of solar / kinetic / mechanical / spring drive movement watches. Similarly, social media influencers can play a significant role by encouraging it's user base to move towards these watch movements instead of promoting quartz watches, no matter how tempting they are in the price point and luxury designs. I say this because the watch industry has a mature technology on these movements especially solar powered watches which can be mass produced to lower the cost further, unlike say the EV car industry currently. Secondly, using battery powered quartz watches requires replacement within 2 years, unlike solar powered batteries which can last up to 2 decades. Ceasing the production of new battery powered watches will significantly reduce landfills in the future unless an effective technology already exists to recycle ALL used batteries completely. Also, batteries used in quartz watches for the short term is akin to using coal to generate energy and carbon fuel for cars. Lastly, it's already bad enough to replace the billions of existing batteries in legacy quartz watches, so let's hope the watch industry will not burden the earth further with new releases of quartz watches! Personally, I haven't been purchasing new quartz watches and am slowly phasing out the use of my legacy quartz watch collections, i.e. I don't replace the batteries in dead quartz watches any more but instead use them as exhibition showpiece purely for their artistic design and aesthetics. Besides, quartz watches are not as fun to wear as alternative movements due to their lack of user interaction which gives a watch a "soul", I digress. Any comments?

      Have blancpain ff and the seadweller, blancpain gets more wrist time. People are genuinely interested when making comments about it whereas when I wear the sd the opposite occurs . Strange but true

      So tell me, do you wait for your car to break down before you service it. Your watch is the same, a service is designed to reduce unnecessary wear which will lead to costly repairs down the track.
