In 1982 John Carpenter’s The Thing was not too well received by audiences and critics, the focus lied more on another Alien: Spielberg’s E.T. Today things turned out differently and The Thing appears to be a timeless classic.
Because the director was so busy with finishing the job, he just could not focus too much on providing a decent score as he had on his other previous projects. He then turned to the much admired Ennio Morricone, who after seeing a rough-cut, wrote atmospheric music that Carpenter could use in the picture as he pleased. So, it came that on the original soundtrack releases much music appears that is in fact not featured in the film.
Carpenter decided to make his film a musical hybrid of Morricone and Carpenter music, although in the film all musical credits go to Morricone. Here, however we have some music that is yet not officially released, like most of Carpenter’s tracks are. For that case I used the Front Cover of the Cimmerian Records bootleg release (which material was just partially used for this video), which in fact contains more music than official releases but again not the Carpenter recordings. Please be aware that the RUclips Content ID system claims some tracks to be the Alan Howard re-recordings (from the 2011’s BSX Records release), but in fact they are John Carpenter’s original ones. Enjoy!

Hi there, i was surprised when i couldn't find any Morricone U- turn soundtrack on RUclips, even on your channel?!,Is it too recent? Already removed? cause the work is really fantastic..

      @@Deepurplerain Hello there!
Maybe there is a copyright issue there, why it's not shown or listed on RUclips. It's not on this site, as we didn't focus on that score, yet. So I can't give you more information than that.
      Best anyways!
      Fred

Love it! Also the movie has IMHO one of the best lines in cinema: "If I was an imitation - a perfect imitation, how would you know if it was really me?" A great line and chilling in its context.

The constant companion to each character’s anxiety and dread: a heartbeat. Perfect in its understatement and a benchmark collaboration of Carpenter and Morricone. A movie and score that retains impact long after ET (my opinion; I saw ET once-I’ve watched The Thing more than 20 times)

Well said. I was just thinking the same. The music is so vital to this film

What's really freaky is now we are beginning to discover the truth on Antarctica and its purpose along with programmable matter, liquid crystal polarization, and shapeshifting. This movie is not so far out of reality as we once thought back in 1982

Comparing THE THING to ET is like comparing apples to oranges. You'd be better off comparing THE THING to POLTERGEIST, since that was Spielberg's horror companion to ET. But really, the scores couldn't be more different. Both Williams and Goldsmith (ET and POLTERGEIST composers, respectively) composed fully orchestral scores that relied on sentimentality, wonder, and mystery. THE THING is spare and foreboding--it's a masterful score to be sure and arguably a vastly more frightening film than POLTERGEIST (or ET for that matter!) It perfectly captures the style of Carpenter with the tone of Morricone. I wholeheartedly agree that it is a benchmark collaboration.

      @yourshadowself Год назад

@@johncaudill9782 the comparison is because both films were released the same year: 1982, and both considered sci-fi, for want of a better description, at that time. ET was obviously hugely successful whereas The Thing was considered a flop. That’s why the comparison was made

      Hello there,
the main source was the Cimmerion (Bootleg) CD, which contains Ennio Morricone's complete music. Another source was used for the John Carpenter synthesizer tracks, which aren't officially released, yet.

The price seems fitting. Unearthly prices for this piece (it has the front cover, which is used in this video). I don't recommend to buy it at all. I would stay at the original albums, as they contains almost everything, except some little cues and Carpenter tracks, which you won't find on that CD, too.
I really recommend you to buy an original album. Probably some official complete release will be happen in the near future, containing everything and being legal.
      Fred
