- My cover version of Ennio Morricone's 'The Thing' Theme (The Thing 1982). I once did a very short version of this for Instagram. Seemed like a good time to do a complete version. Happy Halloween!
Recorded direct to DAW.

The inclusion of dialogue is a stroke of genius
Yes brilliant
Reminiscent of War of the Worlds
You have no idea how many times I've listened to this version, 12 hour night shifts with nobody else around in complete darkness really sets the tempo for work
This man is one a culture
Had this on loop for so long that nobody trusts anybody now and were all very tired.
This movie never gets old :)
If there was ever "The Thing" haunted house or a "The Thing" Experience at Universal Studios, this would be the PERFECT audio while you walk through it.
There WAS a thing house right after the new version was released. I wanted to go so bad but it was too expensive for us back then. Hope they run it back. I heard people hated it bc it was so weird and more creepy than all of the houses they’ve had. Like it didn’t feel like they were trying to scare you. It felt like you were in the movie. That makes me want to experience it even more😭😭
@@basscatcherprofisherman Same!!
@@basscatcherprofisherman There was a The Thing horror house?!
@@TriceratopsHorridussss YES! And it was terrifying if you know the lore. Which you obviously do :)
If they redo a The Thing horror house, the budget need would be high, cause I envision a large building to capture a research station feel, a mix of quality cooling to make the place feel cold like the power has gone out, and there is no way to stay warm. (Obviously not arctic cold but enough to make you shiver on the way through it unless you're bundled up.)
Signs of struggles, burn marks all over the place, along with scratches, broken walls, and mostly out but still "burning" fires.
The payoff at the end, is you if you're alone, you're led into a room to "face off" against the thing beast from the ending. If you're in a group, each of you will be given a stamp, and towards the end, an actor will pull all of you aside for a "blood test" and at random (by pulling the number of the stamp by random choice, people are chosen, and told in secret to stand somewhere specific in the next room, the actor comes in to give the blood test result, when the chosen friend's blood jumps, and while everyone is distracted by it, they swap for another actor in costume. If the group isn't distracted, they would've told said friend to fall to the floor and fake a seizure, and get dragged, or drag themselves behind a curtain for the swap. (Example a darkned curtain, and dark gloved hands do the dragging to keep the immersion by hiding the crew that drag your friend away for the swap, but its like the thing trying to flee before revealing itself.
Now I have to watch this movie for the 379th time again tonight. Well done!
trying to catch up to me. Ih, well, might as well give up watch it again and again and again...
Love how you combined Morricone's main theme with Carpenter and Howarth's synths.
This is hauntingly spectacular! It gives you the willies knowing these guys were out in the middle of nowhere Antarctica being undermined by this freakish mutation of an alien lifeform one by one in terrifying ways by trying to mimic what it consumed. What made the surgery table scene even more scary was the cast didn't know the dummy that was the infested thing was supposed to tear the guy's arms off when it bit into him after he had broken it loose with the defibulators.. You can see the shear tear on their faces unlike today where everything is not done the way it used to be done where even the cast got surprised by what the creators had in mind.
Chills everytime. The dialogue is added so perfectly, and with all the sound effects it really gets under your skin. Those deep eerie sounds.. I just don't have enough words. I just love this one so much..
Mac: 😒
Fuchs: They're not dead yet!
Mac: 👁👄👁
I peed my pants. Very cool cover, I like the fact that you put some of the dialogues in it. Scary.
Happy to hear that you peed your pants! Thanks!
"The Thing" from John Carpenter soundtrack was composed by Ennio Morricone. It was always a soundtracks that I liked so much, but never was included in none of the Enio Morricone music compilations. Entirelly electronic, It lived like a type of composition very different to the other type of music created by Morricone. This is a great cover and homenage to that splendid work. Thank you!
There is actually interesting trivia about that soundtrack... At time of its release Ennio was awarded golden raspberry for it! And than again many years later, pretty substantial part of the soundtrack was used again in Tarantino's The Hateful Eight and Ennio was awarded with Oscar. :) Hollywood is often rough to artists.
I thought John carpenter composed the electronic ost and Ennio morricone composed the orchestral ost.
Entirely electronic? Certainly not. Most of the Morricone score is aoustic / orchestral. The Carpenter-like bass + synth line is electronic, and there are some other synths heard, but most of it was recorded with an orchestra.
@@DestroyER82 The bits used for The Hateful Eight were composed for The Thing but not used in the movie.
@@summer7034 Carpenter added some electronic textures here and there. Not the main theme sequence though, that was Morricone trying (succeeding) to sound like Carpenter.
Hearing this takes me to a place... where I wish I had a flamethrower. Also, I know my cat is one of them. Great cover - love this channel!
Absolutely epic cover. With headphones it perfectly imitates the actual atmosphere of the movie with a modern filled out sound, yet it remains faithful to the original. Bravo!
Imitates?... I think my headphones is something different...
I was a child in the 80s and I happened to catch this movie on late at night. I watched the whole thing and I was so terrified of watching again, I didn't watch it again until full on adult. It still scares me.
I Watched the whole movie, in my head while listening to this. THAT WAS INCREDIBLE. Thanks Azure..................
Thank you :)
THE version I was waiting decades for..
Most of John Carpenters movies had some pretty interesting soundtracks. I wish this was part of "The Thing" Sound track. I would love to hear a State Azure version of the 'Escape From New York' Theme. That would be a Headphone burner.
Watch out, you might speak it into existence.
@@josephreynolds2401 That would not be a bad thing at all.
@@andrewluchsinger The way he put this song together is really fantastic and I would love to hear more like this... Take some tracks from soundtracks and mush them together.. really interesting..
@@Stutch13 I don't have the talent to mix music like Sate Azure, I wish I did.. Most of my experience is in voice and music editing for commercial work. One thing I can say is He can keep it up. I can't listen to the music he produces unless I have my headphones on.
My all time favourite piece of music. I saw this movie at the cinema when it came out and the music captured my soul. So simple yet so perfect. Hard to think it's the same composer as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
You, sir, have done a superb job with this cover. I applaud you! 👏
The method of voiceover applied to the resurrection of this most isolating on edge track is wonderful. You can feel the haunting desolation depicted in the film. Wow!
Canada 🇨🇦😋
2:02 : One of the most powerful sound I've ever heard... my ears absolutely love that masterpiece. Frightening and beautiful ❤🔥
My all time favorite. I appreciate the dialog as well. I can’t express how much I enjoy this movie. 12 years old in 1982.
That's funny, I was actually 10 in 1982, but from what I can remember I watched it the first time about the same age as you, so probably in '84 or '85. I had freaking nightmares. It didn't help that I watched it alone with the family dog sleeping in the same room! Still one of the best imo.
I love you've kept the pacing, darkness and general theme with a touch more atmosphere and synth. The dialogues placed so well as I drive around the deserted city because of lockdowns. Subtlety is so underrated as you have demonstrated here.
Such a good movie, I was talking to some friends of my daughters the other day, asked if they seen any good scary films? Was curious if today’s scary movies are as good as when I grew up. They said no, the ones they saw weren’t that scary, I said, you need to watch John Carpenters The Thing, that should do it! Haha
Agree with that! Also, his Prince of Darkness was one that did it for me! " Faaathaaar"! As the creepy, disfigured girl tries to get close to the mirror! Sht!
One of your best ever State Azure - and that is a high bar indeed! I highly recommend listening with headphones - there is some excellent sound panning and channel isolation going on. Very immersive with excellent low frequencies if your cans can handle the Hz ;)
I wish I could upvote this twice; it's such a great track.
Loved this. Not sure if you done bladerunner already - I’d love to hear your version.
Agreed.
Yes I would love to hear that . Kebu did an amazing job the Blade Runner opening sequence too, check it out on RUclips
This is just so haunting. I closed my eyes and I was in the snow...
Especially in 6:27 onward... Chills...I need a flamethrower real quick...
One of my favorite movies...this was frigging Awesome!!!!✌👍
Started this at 22:22, out in my vehicle in the dark in front of my house. The sound system in my vehicle is great and I'm surrounded by speakers and the bass is vibrating my seat! The dialog is ominous and I'm worried about the dog, again, like when I watched this movie. This is the total package and you have truly outdone yourself! Bravo! Better than Blade Runner...which I'm sure you could put your spin on if you haven't already! Thanks!
This is especially awesome for me as I love this movie and I love your music. Killer combo!
Oh, and Iove John Carpenter, so triple whammy!
Thank you! One of my favourite movies too :)
This would be a great ambient track for a game. Well done with integrating voice lines; audio levelling and post-p is just right. Effective composition.
I love this so much... I feel so tiny listening to this. It feels so vast and ancient.
ennio morricone, i have the privilege to be in concert with him directing the orquestra in his last tour last year in basque country, he was a genius, esquisite, sublime, best movie film composer of 20th century by far, he was an innovator, very good tribute to him State Azure you also mantain john carpenters movies ost dark profound music.. marvellous ... i also love john carpenters movies, his movies ost are very unique..
I’ve watched this a few times now, and I’m back again. As someone who grew up with Carpenter movies I really appreciate you making this. It’s atmospheric, nostalgic and cooler than Kurt Russell in a parka with a fur lined hood!
The best cover of this theme, that's for sure! Scary and atmospheric, just like the movie. Magnificent! I just love it.
For me who know the soundtrack very well, I just can say it is AMAZING. I love your cover !
WOAH!!!.....What an absolutley brilliant film and soundtrack.Watched this film many times, and the soundtrack fits perfect
One the best covers in internet history.
This is an absolutely awesome mix and so professionally done ! Wish I could pull it up in ITunes for a download !
superb work. one of my top movies EVER... it blew me away this morning before work ;-)
speaking of work...I fit carpets, and the cardboard tubes that rolls come on when slapped at the end recreate the (bumbum) noise perfectly from the movie..
its been my party piece for years lol.
Haha, that's funny! I can imagine the sound. Glad you enjoyed this!
Carpet roll tubes are just asking to be slapped on the end for the echo they make
Remembers me the way Vangelis made his music. Same approach but different style. Great to listen to you. Thanks a lot!
Awsome Work 🔥 love THE THING
One of the best main theme for a horror film. Excellent !!
This was such a genuinely fantastic thing to find.
Fantastic stuff and really atmospheric. Love the film and score- you've really nailed the vibe.
Speechless, pure art. Thank you.
THIS WAS SO WELL DONE.....I KEPT SMILING THROUGH OUT THE WHOLE THING. ONE OF THE GREATEST HORROR FILMS OF ALL TIME. YOUR AWSOME!
This sounds fantastic, giving Ennio Morricone's theme the atmospheric love that it deserves. Outstanding work!
Excellent work ! As Always ! Huge like ! 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
God this is amazing!
Greatest opening I've ever heard. Well done sir well done. My favorite Carpenter movie easily and there are so many great ones
This is a very great and genius piece. I loved the way it sounded in my headphones. Total eargasm. I bow down to you because I'm not worthy. 👍👍👍👍👍
This is a great homage remix. I would love to hear more of these style musical renditions. Bravo.
This was the first horror movie I saw on TV, I must have been 10 or 12, it still scares me.
Thank you for reminding me, now I can't sleep again! 🤣 Very good atmosphere!
Absolutely brilliant. By far one of my favorite movies and soundtracks ever. Love the opening dialogue you put in. This is another brilliant cover, SA.
Поистине гениальный кавер,снимаю шляпу перед вами!
Oh how I loved seeing and hearing this in the cinema when it came out. Love the sampled beginning and then that bassy saw comes in. Terrific.
This is really fantastic. A very worthy reworking of the Carpenter/Morricone theme, and excellent choices and editing of the dialogues. And a super mix! So great.
By far my favorite rendition. Well done!
Simply Amazing. What a Pro. 😲👍👍👍👍🙋🇲🇽
Well I'm back in the comments after a year, so amazingly GREAT VIDEO!!!!
Simply magnificent
Magnifiquement oppressif , hypnotique et glacé !
You done a beautiful job on the thing soundtrack
So good! One of my favourite sci-fi horrors, you think twice before watching this movie its full on. A live chat comment led me here.
Great job, really liked the depth, simplicity and samples. An inspiration for my current work thx. Im slowly learning that things dont have to be complex to be brilliant. You and Lisa are my go daytime listening these days, good times, great tracks
Great! My favorite movie ever. Thanx!
Amazing. Astronomical
Music is Magic...Your spells work !!!!
I like the soundtrack of the 'The Fog' very much. Maybe you can also cover the main theme of it, when you have any time left :-)
An amazing cover for an amazing movie! I was fortunate to see this most recently in a small arthouse theater back in January; much better than the half-dozen times in my living room.
Honestly man! You know I'm a fan, and I've only just discovered this one - The Thing is my alltime favourite film (well, The Thing, and Home Alone). This is spectacular. Thank you.
this is so amazing. love this film so much.
Say what you want about the state of the world, but I love the fact that I can type into RUclips "ennio morricone desolation cover" and someone's already done it.
Love this.... very good. One of my favorite moves
I'm speechless. This is so amazing.
I've had this looping for 3 days.
Upon visual eye candy, my thoughts were bloody 'ell that's some kit, then I heard it....!!!...Good cover!!!!
Spooky! I saw the original 1950s B/W movie "The Thing from Another World" recently - can't hold a candle to the Carpenter version.
It can't, but I still like that version too. I'm a sucker for really old horror movies :)
@@stateazure old horror movies up until the 80’s and early 90’s are just amazing.
@@busch028 Agreed :)
Feels like I really am in there... In the chilling cold because of fear and the weather combined... Try listening to this with your eyes closed to be immersed more.
Thanks for listening
i love it. deep diving into the abyss
Even more eerie than the original good work again 👍👍👍
Very good ! It keeps me back to the story of the movie in a world of isolation, darkness, cold places, nothing there, but the unvisible enemy that istill your biggest enemy everywhre at this lonely area .
In this case i say, a mix of darkness , snow and lonelyness in movies give me a special feeling inside, and this needs deep base sounds to point of .
great. one of my favorite soundtracks. i still have the original vinyl :-)
Awe-inspiring
How amazing is this.....wow.....
This was absolutely amazing!
Fantastic this, one to listen to during a snowstorm, at night. Then you wonder where that Husky came from? 😉
Wow, great job! This movie is in my top 5 for sure.
amazing rendition of a classic. great job man.
gorgeous !
Awesome setup, pretty impresive
I listen and immediately I can hear that this is really good. I mean really, really good. Exceptionally good. And then I see and realize. State Azure. Of course. One of my favorite ambient artists on Bandcamp. Good to hear you on RUclips. Cheers and big thanks for your state-of-the-art work!
Ethereal and organic. Amazing tune. ♥️
