He would lose in 1646. There would be a 1,1/2 year period where a fierce debate over how the government should be run. In early 1648 he'd sign a deal with the Scots (Whom he just fought in the last war) to kick off the second civil war. He'd lose this war as well in 1648. Parliament fed up with Charles abolished the monarchy and executed Charles on January 30th 1649.

In 1653 Oliver Cromwell (An extremely significant general who fought for parliament during the civil wars) dissolved parliament after it attempted to halt all elections indefinitely. Cromwell ruled for 5 years as a de facto dictator. He would die in 1658 and attempted to start a dynasty by naming his son as his successor, however it'd take less than a year for Parliament to return, claim him illegitimate, and kick him out. And due to demands from the public and the hell of the last 17 years the son of Charles the first, Charles the second was appointed king.
Yes, during the 2nd civil war he made a deal with the Scots in which they'd join the royalist side to help turn the balance more in favor of the royalists/Charles to help restore himself to the throne he had lost during the 1st civil war, in return he'd give religious reforms after the war would be won. (The royalist lost again tho, so England went in the opposite direction when it came to religion)
