  • When Cannons Are Roaring
Hark, the alarum call, war-clouds a-thundering
Foemen in wood and vale, through the towns plundering,
Then will the brave and true, to standard rallying,
Fight for their land and laws, rushing and sallying.
Chorus: When cannons are roaring and bullets are flying
He that would honor win must not fear dying.
Soldiers with sword in hand, to the walls coming,
Horsemen about the streets riding and running,
Sentinels on the walls, 'Arm, Arm' a-crying,
Petards against the ports, wildfire a-flying.
Chorus: When cannons are roaring and bullets are flying
He that would honor win must not fear dying.
Turmpets on turret high, these are a-sounding,
Drums betaing out aloud, echoes resounding,
Alarm bells in each place, they are a-ringing
Grappling hooks rope-tailed rise, to the walls clinging.
Chorus: When cannons are roaring and bullets are flying
He that would honor win must not fear dying.
Captains in open fields on their foes rushing,
Musketeers' bullets wild down their foes cutting,
Now soon at push of pike, horses uprearing,
Standards still held aloft through the smoke appearing.
Chorus: When cannons are roaring and bullets are flying
He that would honor win must not fear dying.

It has occurred to me, at last, the drums are wrong for this version. The drums of the period did not have the side drum rattle. They were deep, resonant and carried a long way. It was only occurred to me on hearing a re-enactment.

I'm an English patriot, and, honestly, I can't decide if I would side with King Charles or Oliver Cromwell if I lived in the 1640s, both have compelling arguments. I'm torn between my English nationalism and my Patriotic monarchism.

But when Cromwell frees nrealy half the prisoners on the fields of battle and then procedes to free the conscripted soldiers and only then ship off the volunteers, stupid enough to start a third war, theb he's suddely a "monster"

England always was a republic by virtue of being a Parliamentary Monarchy.
Absolute Monarchy is despotic… Parliamentary Monarchy is a Monarchical republic as it fits the the pre-enlightenment definition of a republic and the early English translation of the Latin “res publica” is “commonwealth”, the old meaning of wealth being “well-being” so “commonwealth” is literally “common well-being”.
The Kingdom of England is a commonwealth i.e. a republic.

The irony is(I'm a military historian from Scotland,I drive my boyfriend nuts watching historical films)it probably costs MORE to do it inaccurately than it would to do it correctly!
Another thing that really annoys me as a gay working class man(I let folk say once they don't like homosexuality, that's free speech, twice is hassling me,I hit them,I would never call cops,I despise hate crime laws)is the amount of historical dramas with gay relationships in them, yes, the same proportion of men and women were gay in 1124 than in 2024,but they hid it.
Political correctness makes it look like every second person in the past was gay, plus in a historically based drama I don't want straight or gay relationships taking up half the programme.
