- Testing out the Buffalo Bore hard cast wadcutters in .44 Special and .45 Colt. The .44 Special is a 200 gr HCWC rated at 1,000 FPS and the .45 Colt is a 225 gr HCWC rated at 1,050 FPS. Using my 4.25" S&W model 69 for the .44 Special and my 2.75" S&W Governor for the .45 Colt. Doing a 10% Clear Ballistics test with and without 1/4" MDF as well as a 25 yard accuracy test. If a 32 or 38 caliber wadcutter already has a reputation for being soft-shooting but ballistically punchy, these big bore ones are worth a shot.
Wadcutters have a reputation for punching through skulls rather then glancing off and skirting around the skull. This made it popular for bear defense in some circles.
I used to test stuff like that when I was a kid and it's true. An airgun pellet wadcutter VS pointed, the wadcutter takes a bird's top of head off.

I love big bore wadcutters they seem to hit the target way harder than you expect. Also as you found out they don't need to be loaded super hot to be effective so the recoil is less helping to put more bullets on target.

I think that's partially because of how much energy it actually takes to open up a hollow point. With a wadcutter, all the energy is used towards tissue disruption and penetration. Whereas in a hollow point, a significant amount of energy is expended to open up the hollow point and whatever is left over is then expended in tissue penetration. So you have to really up the energy to achieve both tasks reliably. And the actual expansion of these typical service caliber bullets is a bit less than what one would expect. Looking at the lucky gunner charts, the benchmark of "stopping power" 125gr 357 magnum out of a 4" barrel will expand around 0.54"-0.65". That's a lot of recoil and blast to get what is just a slightly bigger hole diameter. I chose the 125gr 357 magnum since the bullets travel fast enough to have reliable expansion regardless of tissue. The lower velocity 9mm wonder bullets tend to have erratic expansion performance when striking bone. whereas wadcutters are "100% reliable" in a sense.
Started loading wadcutters in 44 Special many years ago for a friend who wanted something mild but effective for his old Charter Arms Bulldog (not known for strength). I cast a 210 grain button-nose design and they are soft enough that they "rivet" a little and don't penetrate as far as those unnecessarily hard Buff Bores. Kept loading them after I discovered that they shoot sub-one-inch clusters at 50 yards from a scoped Super Redhawk...perfect small game/ predator load that could also serve against two-legged vermin.
Even though I have hand loaded a good while, I just got my .44 Special die set. Loaded some Specials and Mags with some XTP's. It will be fun to shoot, but I didn't use Magnum powder at all, so probably like .44 Special and .45 ACP+P.
@@GunSam when I have loaded 44 Special-level loads in Mag cases, I found Titegroup worked great. Since most 44 caliber HPs don't expand reliably at Special velocities, I usually stick to cast stuff. Rimrock Bullets makes a 185 grain SWC-HP that looks like a good choice for a self-defense load.
@@noahmercy-mann4323 I never used that powder as far as I know it is fast powder in small charges the book I commonly use has no listing for it ( Sierra Bullets ) I ask because I always thought it was best to fill the case as much as possible ( small air space ) so for slow bullets , you would be better off with SPECIAL cases or a more fluffy powder . I could be wrong about charge size & ( fast powder ? )
@@danoneill2846 You are absolutely correct about Titegroup being fast (very close to Bullseye), however the great thing about it is that it is very insensitive to its position within the case, making it an economical and accurate choice for big cases like 44 mag and 45 Colt. (As an example, 6 grains in a 45 Colt with a 260 grain bullet gets about 850 FPS and 1 1/2 inch groups from a 5 1/2" Ruger Vaquero.) You are also correct that it is a fine idea to use a smaller case for lower-velocity loads, but some folks don't like to have to clean up the fouling ring in the chambers after firing the short cases, and some firearms are more accurate using the longer cases as well. Freedom Arms actually recommends against using shorter brass in their fine guns due to the possibility of causing erosion (old-timers called it "cavitation") in the chambers immediately ahead of the case mouths which then cause difficult extraction of full-length/full-power loads.
@@noahmercy-mann4323 Thanks I didn't know that about Titegroup , I know a lot of people like it for 38 & 45 acp . Long cases are both good & bad , trade offs no matter what we do . I have used lots of specials & never really found the dirt or erosion to be an issue . I like to shoot slow lead or plated bullets & mostly use Unique for them & even hotter Mid range . The issue I have with long cases , I have 2 revolvers , 1 Charter Arms Bulldog &1 3" 629 , that use them 100% , the 629 has a short rod due to the 3" barrel . I want to be sure I get the empty shells out with 1 good wack , 44 mag cases could possibly get jacked up & slow down a reload . I shoot specials in my 7.5" Redhawk also for fun . With a long case , the bullet will get to the chamber throat sooner , less jump & blow by . I have shot 44 special from a 4.5" Super Blackhawk with lead Cowboy match bullets ( Warm ) , I shot better at 100 yds than I thought Me OR the short 44 could . So accuracy with the right load is not really an issue . That 5.5" is almost the Perfect all around size !!! not too short ,, not too long !! Cool That is what Sam needs for 45 LC !! + a 45 acp cylinder . I asked him about that & a 10mm / 40 cal , he didn't want a single action ... I would LOVE one !! 2 rounds with 1 gun !!

Back when I bought my first 1911 early in 1977 (I also had a Charter 44), good expanding bullets were scarce. I decided to go with “pre-expanded” bullets. 😉 Both of these look like pretty good loads. Thanks!👍

One other thing about wadcutters that has faded into the background with modern bullet expansion technology, is that the size of the meplat contributes to "on target" effect. This is in regards to nonexpanding bullets. That's why Keith style bullets have a large flat nose. Since you can't get any bigger of a meplat with wadcutters, you maximize the "on target" shock impact. That effect was achieved even with the somewhat slower speeds that was typical for wadcutters, since they were originally target bullets.
All those experimental results have faded into the background with modern bullet expansion technology, but it could be important information for those who cast their own bullets.
Personally, I don't care for wadcutters outside of a target range because they are slower to load, but they are effective with nonexpanding bullets.
LBTs are the best if not full WC Larger than Most any SWC & better shape for a lever gun
It cannot be totally discounted how a "compression wound" CAN work, being as any would be assailant would still have bones inside them. Ballistics gel is great, but imagining what a large diameter heavy wadcutter would do as it shatters a human breastbone, sending bone fragments into heart and lungs is quite encouraging from a defensive standpoint! I really enjoy your format and testing procedure. I would love tosee a test using only a 2 or 2.5" 38 SP revolver with 3 kinds of shells. We already know through your previous video's that some, if not most. JHP have a hard time expanding. I have heard that wadcutters are a better option given the velocity loss of the short barrel in most defensive carry guns (snubbies). Could you test penetration using full wadcutters vs semi wadcutters and maybe a good JHP? (Hornady critical defense or Federal HST, your choice)
@@_JimS it's so incredibly rare to hit that one 2x4 though. It has happened a couple times before after two gel block pass throughs and all bullets have embedded in it.
A 500 S&W magnum load with a 440 grain flat meplat bullet is an awesome load for any big game animal on earth.

Nice video sir. A lot of people say wadcutters aren’t good for self defense and you already addressed how they actually can be good but honestly, I’d rather have a .45 Colt buffalo bore wadcutter cartridge for protection instead of a standard, lead flat nose cowboy action load that are underpowered on purpose, not that those aren’t lethal or anything cause they absolutely are. A lot of people underestimate just how strong .45 Colt is and how good it’s terminal ballistics really is, and that is likely due to the fact that most gun stores typically only have cowboy action loads. To anyone who has only shot CB action loads please order a box of spicy .45 Colt defense loads and you’ll see a huge difference.

I actually bought cast wadcutters for 44 and loaded em in mag cases. One is the 200 that looks similar to the ones BB loads and the other is a nasty looking 250 grain one that sticks out of the case quite a ways. I boiled the lube off em and HT coated em. In my mag guns I run em around 1100 fps for both loads.... man... on a two liter? they hit really spectacular.
The Buffalo Bore 44 special anti personnel wadcutters are a great choice for people that conceal carry a snubby. They are accurate. They hit like a hammer. They tend to crush bone and tear tissue. They also don't have that bad of recoil. I love Buffalo Bore. Unfortunately, they are very expensive.

I love your setup- simple and effective. Wish I had me at least an acre of backyard, maybe some woods. Maybe not, I'd drain my savings on ammo. Those are both what I would consider a good "sit your azz down" round, without too much excess energy. Another great test.

Last year I ordered .44 DEWC in 200 grain weight ! I haven’t just yet tested the new wadcutter bullets !!

These would make great for a snub nose. Honestly, I expected a bit lower velocity on the .45 Colt. In all my testing with the Judge series guns, I never used Wadcutters. Primarily as they were not widely available and wasn't reloading any at that time. But per Buffalo Bore's sit they list a 2 inch Taurus Titanium frame gun gettin 850 fps. So, to see it pushing almost 1,000 FPS average in the Governor is wonderful.
I'm still of the opinion for the .44 and .45 Colt there are good anti personnel loads that will get good expansion and penetration readily available on the market for most guns in the chambering. But for snub nose guns in .44, like say a Charter Arms for instance I think this would be excellent, but overall I don't see as much of a point compared to smaller calibers with wadcutters like .38's and .32's.

Very informative video! Looks like a decent SD load for the governor - prob even a bit too much penetration. With that large cross-sectional area you don't really need expansion which also means the energy that would be needed to expand a HP bullet is instead transferred to the target.. Another advantage of wadcutters is that because the full length of the bullet engages the rifling u get higher accuracy.

I think either of these would be an effective round for self defense against 2 legged predators.
Large wadcutters will get it done. They seem like they would be excellent for animal defense or simple close range hunting. If you had to defend yourself against a person, they should work well. Yes, they may over penetrate a little, but out in the woods it should not be a problem. I am not a hunter, but logic suggests that through and through penetration is a good thing- the exit hole lets more blood out and more air in. Most rifle hunters want an exit wound for a better blood trail. Large pieces of lead still have their place.
I have no problem carrying a wad cutter in a snubby. Especially in the winter with all manner of clothing barriers.
Thank you for the great video. This would be ideal ammo for Charter arms revolvers which are available in 44 special and 45 colt. Similar to the old Webley revolvers that relied on large bullets. It would be nice to see more Buffalo Bore ammo tests as they make other heavy wad cutters for old calibers like 38 Smith and Wesson.
The Webley used a 265 grain soft lead bullet which was devastating. The velocity was very slow around 650 fps.
The Son of Sam used the Charter Arms .44 Bulldog. It became a very popular revolver because of the news reports describing the terrible wounds it caused.

I have about a half dozen of each caliber. Some specimens more than 100 years old, some made in the 21st century. I do handloads and it is not unusual for me to simply seat a cowboy bullet backwards in the cartridge case. Works well with Keith type SWC bullets too. They give a full wadcutter effect and can be used at velocities lower than 900 fps with no problems. They work well in my .455 Mk VI Webley too.

I use Underwood 45 Colt wadcutters for defense rounds in my little snubby. I have to say I am impressed with how well they shoot and how deadly they are. They don’t rely on velocity so they work great in snubbies and derringers. I hope these get more popular so Underwood never stops making them.
In the Smith and Wesson Governor, the Lehigh Defense .45LC/.410 load is devastating! The .38 Special +P 130 grain HST from Federal are similar to a wadcutter. Works well from 2 inch barrels. Buffalo Boar is loaded hotter so velocity is key for self defense use.

So according to FBI standards, this ammo gets a big fat "F" for penetrating beyond the 18" margin. But if you're not concerned about "Uncle Bob" sleeping in the next room, 👍go for it.
For selfdefence they could be loaded weaker. So you have even less recoil and no overpenetration.

The wadcutter is often recommended, but it's nice to have some actual testing to see if this is true. I would prefer a good expanding bullet but you could do a lot worse.
I think a softer wadcutter would be better then these but for applications where a person can tank the increased recoil needed to push a hollow point I say go for the hollow point
I've always loved 38 waddcutters for target shooting.. unfortunately recently they're getting hard to find😳.. I'm toying with the idea of getting a single action six gun in 45 Long Colt.. if I am out in the woods I would definitely carry these 45 Long Colt. Wadd cutters
I have a single action 45 long colt and not only is it perplexingly accurate you almost don’t even need to fully aim just point the barrel in that direction snd it’ll hit what you’re trying to it, I use hard cast semi wadcutters, about 75% flat, I’d bet it’ll stop anything in its tracks no matter how many legs
To shoot wadcutters you basically have to cast them yourself
Sam, you should do some carbine tests with these and the 38 loads - various. Rossi makes carbines in all of these calibers. They generally deliver about 20% more velocity.
S&W just needs to make a 5-shot 45 Colt based on the new L-frame design (ball detent, shrouded barrel, etc) in a 4" barrel.
Yeah. One of those you can't talk about things, of running non SAAMI .45 Colt+P in a gun like that. But it makes sense, instead of .44 Special/.44 Mag you simplify, .45 Colt and .45 Colt+P.
@@GunSam The .357mag and .44mag get all the press. I think it's time to bring back the 45 Colt. Even with a big heavy slug, slower speed is a more pleasant recoil impulse but still has the power to take down a horse. hahaha

I think the 190 gr SWC - HP would be better BOTH are a hand full & likely all you can take in recoil . The 190 gr may be less FT/ Lbs not as hard on the Bull Dog the Bull Dog is about 22 OZ

FWIW; I have a "house gun" load of a 150 gr DEWC over a max load of W231 for my 2" 38 Special. While pretty accurate it's velocity takes it out of the "target/plinking" catagory. IIRC. around 825 fps. I'd trust it at across the room distances...
I love the videos on the governor! Which is your preference between the buffalo bore anti personnel semi wadcutter or the full wadcutter for self defense? I carry the semi wadcutters and 2 rounds of the 410 triple defense in mine.
I wish .44 special was more available. Both the ammo and firearms chambered specifically chambered for the round are very hard to find.
You know that you can use any 44 mag revolver. So why not?

@@poseidon5003 There are some Ruger and S&W chambered für 44 special but they are the same size and frame. The only difference is that the chamber inside the cylinder is shorter. Thats all. This is also the same with all .38 special only revolvers. A model 15 has the same weight as a model 19. S&W has or had a .44 mag with scandium frame. This would be a very nice lite revolver for .44. special.

Nobody produces firearms specifically chambered for .44 special anymore and it's a shame. They make great snub nose revolvers However, .38 specials are still popular. . But you are correct. That S&W .44 mag with the scandium frame is perfect for .44 special since it's literally painful to shoot .44 mag out of it. But I live in Canada. Pistol and revolver barrels have to be over 4.1 inches. Handguns with 4.1 inches and below barrel length are classified as prohibited.
@@poseidon5003 Yes if you want to shoot .44 special you better reload. The Model 329PD is still in production and has a 4.13 inch barrel
One reason I don't carry .44 special normally in my magnums is that specials seem to penetrate WAY too much for as little relative damage that they do. But this, while definitely more than the 18" soft limit of the FBI is still one of the less penetrating .44 specials AND does some damage along the way. I forget which one, but a while back you had one that was even better. That became my "gotta get some o'those" rounds, BUT this wadcutter is now my #2 gotta have.
Somewhat off topic, but have you noticed much velocity difference between shooting in very cold conditions as opposed to hot summertime? Just curious.

Thanks. No not much. I did a study where I shot averages from the same gun and same box of ammo in the winter and in the summer. Basically, I got no difference. I think it was something lie 70% of the ammo was a tad faster in winter, but only by single and low double digits.

Here in coastal Alabama we'll have a day where it's freezing then a week where our A/Cs are going. Good to know there's not enough difference to matter in ammo velocity. I figured that was mostly a gun tag rumor or something only very long range rifle shooters had to think about.
I would like to compare 45 colt out of a lever gun vs 44 mag in a wheel gun.
That was an interesting comparison between the .44 Special and the. 45 Colt. If you really like double-action revolvers chambered in. 45 Colt, you might want to take a look at the Taurus 450, it weighs ~28 ounces (both the Ultra-Lite and Total Titanium models weigh ~20 ounces) and is easier to conceal than the Smith & Wesson Governor.

NOE makes a 246 grain for.44 and a 273 for.45. Those would probably be great for defense at 700-800 fps and hell on hogs at higher velocity.

I would say less. Because this is like a 30 OZ revolver if I recall. I would say the recoil compares to a 158 gr .357 Mag from my 40 OZ 686, therefore in the same weight gun the .45 Colt would have less recoil.
Then the felt recoil of the .45 colt. When fired out of the Smith & Wessen 460 performance addition. ( Only because that model looks soo nice.) With a 3.5" barrel would be even be lowered. Due to its weight of 58.8 Oz. Or the model 460XVR with a 6 3/8" " barrel at 72 oz.
I love 45 colt. Mine has a 7.5 inch barrel. I like the 200 grain speer Gold Dot loads that Grizzly Cartridge makes for a defense load but I wsnt to get a woods round for deep penetration. This is one on my list. I want to stick with standard pressure though. I am considering some 265 grain hardcast flatnose loads too.

Wadcutters were designed to “cut” perfect holes in paper targets and were used in pistol competitions, starting in the 1930s. Absent the ragged tearing caused by hardball or lead roundnose, competitors’ targets could scored with precision in National Match 3-pistol events.
S&W manufactured their Model 52 single-stack .38 semi-auto which only fired factory wadcutters that headspaced on the lip of the rim.
A better choice for carry in hard cast lead would be the .45 Colt 255 gr semiwadcutter
Semi Wadcutter will over penetrate if pushed at any real velocity. If I took basically a flat wadcutter and pushed it to 900 FPS, it's going to do well and not over penetrate. A SWC needs to be at like 700 FPS to not over penetrate.
I wanted a loading that could manage both predator defense and home defense when I’m living in a cabin in bear country. I chose a heavy 260 grain .44 special wadcutter loaded to 500+ foot pounds energy. It’s a stout load, but not as distracting/painful to shoot as .44 magnum. I load 300 grain .44 magnum wadcutters loaded to 1,000+ foot pounds if I’m hiking in the brush, but those kick hard enough to greatly delay follow up shots.
I’m going to order those 44’s, looking good in the gel. Have you done any testing yet on the 180 XTP’s? I ordered some of them the other day for my new 5.5” SBH, was curious how they perform 🤷🏼♂️
Yeah I did some 180 gr XTP loads with some lower power Buffalo Bore ammo. Also I might have done an underwood load of that. I also just hand loaded some 180 gr XTP in .44 Special and .44 Mag light magnums. It will be fun to see how they do.

Very good. Those bullets certainly eliminate the possibility of bullets not expanding. The bullet turning in the media concerns me. Seems like a self defense shooting should assume the bullet goes straight.
Not a bad thing to destabilize in the target as long as they are stable through the air.

Those wadcutters are hard lead and go in quite far I noticed that with .38 Special ones in bags full of newspapers.They are generally used by target shooters and I've seen them in;.32 Long,.38 Special and now in .44 Special and .45 Long.I don't think anyone makes them in .357 Magnum or .44 Magnum?

I get them on Buffalo Bore's website. Not cheap. Probably why they wrote "Merry Christmas" on my last receipt. Ordered about 12 boxes of various ammo.
But you can also sometimes find on Middwayusa, various BB rounds.
.44 special or the .45 Colt. With either you cant go wrong for a defense caliber. Like launching a brick....

I have a 429348 mold 180WC that I load in 44spl for my Charter Arms Bulldog and Bond Derringer 44spl.
I understand that you are limited to your available guns so this is by no means a criticism. I would like to note, however, that the .45 colt would perform much better if it were fired from a 4.75” or 5.5” barrel single action army, which this specific loading was designed for.
No one is conceal carrying a colt saa. 🤣 A Judge/Governor is just about the only mainstream/easy to find snub nose double action revolver that shoots 45 LC anyway.
@Some Nobody people pack big bore single actions all the time. Look up Gary reeder, John linebaugh, Elmer keith, dick cassull, freedom arms and many more companies. Single action bug bite revolvers are used massively in woods carry and pistol hunting. Also… nobody carries a judge or a governor. And I mean nobody.

Can you do a video on the Underwood .44 Special 200 gr Hard Cast Wadcutter? It's cheaper than the Buffalo Bore and I'm curious if the performance is the same
Pushed faster they would make excellent hunting rounds. I have pushed copper plated .357 magnum wadcutters to about 1200 fps. Explodes water jugs like a hollow point. 225 swc at 1100 fps would be a good cheap shortrange deer dropper IMHO . Excellent video.

Not really , they are not Vel based . Brian Pearce of Handloader Mag used a 270 gr ?? Keith 44 sp at about 1,000 Ft/sec took a spike elk at about 80 yds from a 5.5" revolver best I can remember . He said in & out on a side shot ROPEs of blood on both sides . It didn't go far .
My deer hunting has been poor with soft points in 44 mag from a 7.5" Ruger & 18.5 " Ruger they both ran 75 & 50 yds couldn't tell they were hit till they dropped .. both Good Heart shots in & out ! I will ONLY use H Ps from now on . The full W Cs look like the best choice .. if Not a H P .

Underwood makes a good 44 special wadcutter as well.

I swage my own hollow point wadcutters out of 255 grain .45 cowboy action bullets. They open up to about .60 caliber, and almost always turn sideways afterwards. I've done a lot of testing, and I trust their damage and reliability over all other bullet designs. I think the only reason why no company manufactures them is because they're not accurate at longer distances.

Semi wadcutter has the flat edge but also a protruding flat nose. Wadcutter is just no nose. Theoretically the semi wadcutter penetrates deeper.

what about the penetration through things like walls for wadcutters? it seems like wadcutters would be safer in that respect.
It would depend. With these, they would probably penetrate like anything else as they are hot and hard cast. Now a typical wadcutter in .32 and .38 you would be right about, low power and soft cast, will mushroom on anything and not a lot of power to pass through.

Webley and Scott firearm company. Is a very old gun company. They were known for their .445 revolvers. Which were heavely used during WWll. Much more reliable the the Ruger semi automatic pistols. Especially out in the dirt, mud, snow and in the trenches. The company closed its doors in 1979. But have recently reopened its company in India. The revolvers are in .32 only. 1911 in .45, shot gun in 12 guage. Rifle is air that is most of the infermation. That I have on them. Hopefully they will manufacture the .445!? There are only two companies that still manufacture ammunition in .445.
45acp= 230jhp at 850fps. 45 colt = 255 swc at 980fps with black powder.
I'd like to see a device that measure the poundage of impact. A slower but heavier bullet (45 colt) might just hit harder than the faster but lighter.44 magnum.
No, 45 lc will NOT hit harder than 44 mag. But if you would have said 45 lc +p I would have considered what you said.
You just need to calculate the momentum of the bullets = mass x velocity and compare the two . The bullet with the greater momentum will "hit" harder. Basically how a ballistic pendulum works to measure bullet velocity and gun recoil.
