Who would carry a gun chambered in .45 Colt for self-defense? Well, I do. I have an N-frame S&W model 25-5 in .45 Colt, modified by Jovino Gunworks, Inc. (upstate NY) who cut the barrel to 3.5 inches and cut the square butt and re-welded it to a round butt K-frame configuration. Pachmayr grips and an El Paso Saddlery holster makes it my favorite open-carry going-to-town gun here in NW Montana. Bought it in 1986 in El Paso, Texas, when I was on the S.O. there, it has the slickest action I have ever touched. Now I know what my new carry ammo will be! Thanks, Paul.
I recently picked up a very nice used 410/45 Colt single shot New England Survivor carbine. Now I want a 45 Colt handgun to go with it. I am a Smith guy - I'd love to have the one you have ! But I'll probably get a Ruger single action. I've owned several Blackhawks over the years, including 2 chambered in 45 Colt. I just can't believe how much they have went in price. They used to go for $200-$250 used around here. I did pick up a 50 round box of Federal American Eagle 45 Colt ammo at my local Rural King a few weeks back. On sale they were $65. I thought for that price they should be semi gold jacketed rounds ! Lol.
About the best thing to say about the Taurus Judge is that it made it so many of the major ammo manufacturers decided to produce self-defense offerings in 45 Colt.
The downside to Judge and Governor, is S&W and others made a compromise revolver instead of a decent 5-shot defensive revolver chambered exclusively for 45 Colt, able to handle modern pressures, so everyone doesn't go chasing after .44 magnum.

The S&W 25 is a current production double action revolver with adjustable sights in 45 Colt. As a 6.5” N-Frame, it’s not exactly perfect for the “concealed” part of carry, but there’s no reason it couldn’t be used as home defense or worn on a big belt and holster on the ranch or similar.

Absolutely a legend! I got in my truck last week and I got a pop up on my tube videos and it was Paul saying he was dead! I sat in my truck and weeped and I’m not some whimp! I spent years fighting fires in the Bronx lived through the attacks of 911 and buried lots of my brothers, buried my young wife right before her 51st birthday and almost lost my baby girl twice and on and on life has been a battle and that’s not even considering my 2 battles with 911 cancers 4 major spinal operations and many more surgeries. Something just broke that afternoon and I never even met this fine gentleman. Maybe it’s because over all these years of lose and sadness ,Paul’s shows helped me forget about all the things in this world and now he is gone as well. Thank you brother for all the years of helping us hurting guys forget our pain even if it was just for a little while. Blessings to your family and all who love you! I pray you are walking with JESUS talking about all the guns and ammo you would have liked to create. GODS SPEED BROTHER!!!
Roger that ! I'm a 6'-225 guy. Prior military (13Bravo - Artillery). Worked 7 years putting up road signs for the State Highway and worked Finishing drywall for 25+ years. No one has ever thought of me as a wimp. But like you, the day I watched that video, I couldn't stop the tears that were running down my checks. I'm 60 years old. Been shooting since I was 5 and I still learn things watching Paul's videos. He is, without a doubt, the BEST gun guy on RUclips !
Nothing better, than seeing a Paul Harrell video notification show up on my Birthday today! I’ll consider it it a gift, even though Paul won’t see my comment. I hope your hip is recovering. Can’t believe you still go through pain, to bring us videos!! Only video I can’t find, is you in the Plaid Jacket doing the FBI stance. Only guy I turn all notifications on for and one of the only reasons I still watch RUclips at all. Thank you Paul!! I appreciate everything you do for us.
Shooting well at 25 yards from a "crutched" position, speaking sitting on a log with a broken hip, thanking people helping and delivering usefull info in a pleasant format. You are on a different level Mr Harrell. Wish you a full and speedy recovery.
Paul, I think this might be a golden opportunity for a Shooting While Using Crutches video. Those of us over 40 know how easily it could be us at any given moment. Great video as always!
I relate to the crutches, I’ve used them my whole life. And you handle them well! Your shooting is reasonable considering the time and practice you have had on them! I learn a lot from what you present! Thank you for the great content!
I know you've done videos on 10mm ammo before, But i would personally enjoying seeing a video like this for 10mm ammo, with an emphasis on defensive use.
I was going to say that handloading 45 Colt is very cost effective. Plus you can load anything from powder puff Cowboy loads to stout near-44 Magnum loads (IF your gun can handle higher pressure, like a Ruger).
Thanks Paul, that was an excellent episode. I carry a S&W Model 25 4" Mountain Gun in 45 Colt and it sleeps under my pillow. I'm a retired SWAT guy and have always believed two things. A bigger hole lets more blood come out and a hole all the way through is two holes and that lets lots more blood come out. Win, win. Putting those holes where they do the most good is the trick. I've been carrying the Federal 225 Soft Point but will be seeking out those awesome Hornaday Critical Defense 185's.
If we look at the cost of running these tests we might appreciate Pauls efforts even more- Multiply the retail cost of ammunition, targets, chronograph, ribs, oranges, etc. by the number of views. I think we would be surprised. Thank you Paul

I'd be interested to learn how Mr Harrell messed his hip up. That's never a good time, but it's good to see the man grinning and bearing it. That's some man energy right there. 🤗

This really is the best gun channel on YT. High production quality, relevant information, wide range of topics, attention to detail, and humor. Congrats to Paul for surviving a velociraptor attack with only a broken hip to show for it. For those who aren't in the know, Paul put the raptor down with that Vaquero. (We all know how modest he is).
Well the origin of the unofficial "long colt" designation is from the military ball ammo (m1877 iirc)that was released after the supply issues where schofields couldn't shoot.45 colt ammo because it was too long and SAAs could only load every other round if they received Schofield ammo because the rim was too big. The new military ball ammo to fix the problem had the Schofield length with the colt rim size and could be loaded in either gun and is what people unofficially called.45 short colt because it had the.45 colt rim size in a shorter length.
I thought it was just Schofield that was colloquially known as "short colt" because it fit in the SAAs, and the "long" was added to 45 colt "long" so soldiers didn't try to load it in their Schofield revolvers and cause major issues like damaged hands
Great comparison. If we are lucky enough to get a part two, I’d love to see Winchester Defender 225 grain bonded hollow point tested. I’d also like to see the Barnes load of the 200 XPB and Underwood or preferably Buffalo Bore 225 grain lead semi wad cutter hollow point.
An absolutely fantastic video! Thank you for producing and posting it! I recently picked up a 1930-manufactured Colt New Service .45 Colt revolver, so this video is very timely for me. Thank you again for your clear, concise, and very informative work! 👍👍
In reality that revolver had closer to one full inch longer barrel than the 1911. A full 5.5 inches of travel since the cartridge resides in the cylinder. The 1911’s 5 inch barrel includes the chamber that the cartridge sits in, so it has closer to 4.5 inches of travel. So, using a Ruger with a 4.6 inch barrel would have been a closer comparison. But then again the revolver loses a little bit of velocity through cylinder gap, so who knows? Great vid Paul.
cylinder gap plus the half inch or more travel in the cylinder isn't rifled. So I'd say close enough. Could say the Redhawk in 45 colt / 45 acp firing both would be a better comparison but then again that portion on unrifled travel would be different for the 2 bullets
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Paul. Remember that everyone who makes an old guy joke about a broken hip is just jealous that they haven't done half as much as you at twice your age.
Oh those are fine, i find the ones about that hip accident probably originating from a steamy encounter with the rather overweight better 3\4's particularly funny. I'm sure most if not all of the funny men here really wish no harm, or rather want Paul to actually heal, some of us are even concerned he's going on with a broken hip when he probably should be resting.
Thanks Paul as this is food for thought. It also sends me back down that rabbit hole of all the different types of .45 Caliber rounds, Like the .45 Short Colt which I think may also be called the .45 Colt Government, vs the .45 Long colt, .45 Schofield and the much older .45 Colt (11.43x33mmR) which was actually a black powder round for use with the 1872 SSA. And for the most part you are forgetting one type of person that carry's a .45 Revolver, and that would be those like me who are former Pinkerton agents and a few military personal that had a .45 SSA Colt. Oh and definitely thanks to the guys helping Paul right now, as you guys are great.
Paul, you really made my day with this video. I only recently got into owning and shooting .45 Colt. I own both a Single action pistol and will be buying a compatible lever gun shortly. Thank you so much, Mr. Harrell I am really glad to see this today.
Great video! I'm glad you used actual defense ammo and not cowboy action ammo and called it a day. I personally carry a SAA as my carry piece (yes I have other "modern" pistols I carry too). I did so because of how often I am in the woods. Less moving parts to break or jam, caliber works great on people and large game, and they shoot really great. 5 or 6 shots is plenty for a citizen (remember how people recommend snub nosed revolvers with no reloads?) day to day concerns.
Thank you for the presentation and I hope you get well soon. If I understand it correctly. The military had 38 caliber revolvers and found them insufficient and wanted a 45 caliber in an auto loader. So John Browning developed the 45acp to mirror the power of the 45 colt or long colt. The 45acp was just a modern auto loader version of the 45 colt. I noticed something also. I watch a lot of gun videos and I noticed that the energy ft lbs you got was very similar to 380 acp in other videos. Just thinking it doesn't matter too much about caliber. It's more about what you can shoot well.
I love Hornady ammo. Most consistent through the tools that i have. I have some serious problems finding Hornady in the calibers i hunt with. It used to be easy. Now it's all "military" calibers that are easy to find. You know, the types politicians were trying to get rid of. Funny how that works. .338 win mag, .300 win mag, .30-30, .22-250, 10mm, .460 s&w and even .45 long Colt.... They've all been hard as hell to find. Especially the .338. Thanks for another great vid! I hope you heal up well.

We were all wimps when Paul died. :(
Roger that !
Thank you for your service brother
Praying for quick and full healing.
The video with the plaid jacket is .38 special standard pressure ammo.
Happy Birthday and yes, I try to read all the comments.
The 45 Colt is something I won’t buy anytime soon if ever. Did I watch the video? Yes because I always learn something from these videos.
That's a good point and idea. "Shooting with an incapacity of some sort" would be a good topic to explore.
Concur!
We gotta give him sometime to figure it out, I am willing to wait for a more through presentation
Yes! Love my S&W 25 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt...great vid!
Thank you Paul. My dad's edc is a 3 inch S&W model 25. I'm going to pass this video along to him.
I relate to the crutches, I’ve used them my whole life. And you handle them well! Your shooting is reasonable considering the time and practice you have had on them! I learn a lot from what you present! Thank you for the great content!
Love the turkey's in the background gobbling after almost every shot.
I like Paul's shatnerisk pauses, it gives me more time to look at the ... scenery. 😂
Get well soon Mr. Harrell...(the best is yet to come!)
Thank you to Paul's crew for giving him the assistance to make this. It was a great video!!!
I pray for your healing Paul. May GOD bless you with health.
Thank you so much Paul for working through injury to bring us all such good information! Get well soon!
One of the few channels I click "like" before watching... never regret it
Yes. More Uncle Paul. Got my Pop Tarts ready.
Brilliant !!!
I really enjoyed hearing the turkeys gobble in the background. Very cool!
I know you've done videos on 10mm ammo before, But i would personally enjoying seeing a video like this for 10mm ammo, with an emphasis on defensive use.
Delivers a top-quality presentation with a broken hip. Paul is an absolute legend.
Can’t see anyone using one for concealed carry, but if it’s what you got, it’s better than nothing for home defence, and it does pack a solid punch.
Yeah..it packs a punch..that's why it's so famous.
Ruger and Smith both make double action revolvers that aren't totally ridiculous for carrying. Still, probably not ideal.
to Paul and his helpers thank you.
Turkeys are tough birds. No wonder Franklin wanted to make them or country’s emblem.
Dude tough as nails out in the field on broken hip. Legend
I enjoy the 45 Colt. It's gotten super pricey with little selection in my area.
You can hand load for $9-12 a box. The biggest expense is the loader but it pays for itself pretty fast.
I was going to say that handloading 45 Colt is very cost effective. Plus you can load anything from powder puff Cowboy loads to stout near-44 Magnum loads (IF your gun can handle higher pressure, like a Ruger).
Reload. You’re a Daisy if you don’t
I've watched and learned a lot from Paul's videos. I love his presentations and in depth knowledge of the subject matter at hand. Rest in Peace Paul and know your legacy lives on.
Excellent comparison PH. I say use what you have. It is always a pleasure watching your videos. Happy Veterans Day. Those turkeys were cheering you on.
Hahaha the "Dirty Bird" target fits with all the turkeys in the back ground gobbling 🙂
What I most enjoy about your videos. Is your attention to details. Also your phrase..."It depends" acknowledging critical variables. Well done I pray for your recovery.
I'd be interested to learn how Mr Harrell messed his hip up. That's never a good time, but it's good to see the man grinning and bearing it. That's some man energy right there. 🤗
Expertly presented info on a caliber I really happen to like a lot! Thank you Paul and crew for yet another masterpiece!
If someone asks about 45 colt, i always ask why first before giving information, the amount of people that are coming from a western movie always makes me smile
Thanks for keeping up the videos even though youve been injured Paul.
Paul says don’t ask... I’m not gonna ask.
The turkeys heckled Paul, with every shot!
Love hearing the turkeys calling in the background. Their calling for their “long” Colts.
OH BOY I JUST WON A PRIZE! FROM MR PAUL HARRELL. Also get better soon Paul, please be more careful
Thanks, Paul. Get well soon.
Interesting video as usual Paul, enjoyed it. Hope the hip heals up soon and with minimal discomfort. Keep the videos coming...
Sorry to hear about your hip. Praying for a full and speed recovery
This is the man who taught John Wick
Taran Butler
@@ShastaBeanThats the man who taught Keanu Reeves.😊
I heard that the John Wick series is really just a biography of Paul's life. Lol
INJURED and this dude still makes great videos!
Thank you Paul and crew for a wonderful video. My prayers to you for a speedy recovery.
Quite frankly, and as exspected, when Paul Harrell speaks, people listen.
You sir are a much respected, fine gentleman and true professional.
Thanks to Paul and the crew for another excellent production, particularly given the circumstances. 👍
I don't know how but I just discovered this man's channel... but I love it! Nice vid Mr. Harrel
The Barns is a real winner. Expands at ridiculously low velocities too.
An absolutely fantastic video! Thank you for producing and posting it! I recently picked up a 1930-manufactured Colt New Service .45 Colt revolver, so this video is very timely for me. Thank you again for your clear, concise, and very informative work! 👍👍
Get well soon, Paul!
Thank you Paul and crew.
Thank you Paul for the consistent great information. Thank you regular people and thank you rather large group of people for your part!
Ruger Old Army 7 1/2in stainless with a 45 Colt conversion cylinder. I love it! So fun! BP or cartridge. Very versatile.
Great vid Paul.
yeah, close enough I suppose. apples to oranges with cylinder gap. more of a point of reference than a direct comparison.
cylinder gap plus the half inch or more travel in the cylinder isn't rifled. So I'd say close enough. Could say the Redhawk in 45 colt / 45 acp firing both would be a better comparison but then again that portion on unrifled travel would be different for the 2 bullets
I don't currently shoot .45, but I like it, and learned a lot. Thanks, Paul. Heal up!
Paul
Thank you for your help all these years. 👍❤️👍
Thank you to the crew & Paul for an excellent presentation. Healing mojo still being sent.
What is mojo?
God bless ya Paul & heal up brother.
Yay new Paul video
Even a bad leg and he loaded a single action better than me! What a legend! Thank you Paul for more than i can say!
The turkeys on the background after every shot is [Chef’s Kiss]
