For those wanting me to review Saints Row 2, I am currently playing it now. They'll be a couple reviews out sooner than that, but there will be a Saints Row 2 review in the future. (And for those asking if I'm playing it on PC or console, I'm playing the PS3 version)

After you beat SR2, I'd recommend you to check out Fl1ppy, he made alot of Saints Row Videos, they might be vulgar but they're entertaining as hell!
Fun fact: If you call the phone number on the side of the taxi, they would actually send a taxi you can use to fast travel. Same thing in the sequel.
All of the phone numbers you found in game actually worked. Unlike GTA V which didn't.

@@KarmaDrip they mean calling the taxi is required for 100% completion. The TNA taxi service is in the hitman activity.
I only recently discovered Zombie Carlos and I'm so mad.
I love this game. When I first played it, it felt like a next-gen San Andreas and I liked that you can play music outside the car.
Agreed. It's also one of the few games that feature a Ford Explorer and a Meter Maid car as drivable vehicles.
Playing music outside vehicles is a feature still used in a lot of open world games now,
crazy that the original Saints Row was the first to do it as far as I know.
I think saints row 1 and 2 were better successors for san andreas than gta 4

@@johananj.j8003 still fun as hell and one of the most underrated game series of all-time, with the new reboot excluded. SR 1-4 we’re all consistent with their storylines for the most part. Whereas GTA has nearly no consistency within the franchise outside of the maps. SR took a lot of inspiration in many ways from GTA for sure, but it’s still its own game. I’m hoping GTA 6 will be better, because imo GTA V isn’t that good

2nd one is easily the best. 3 and 4 had more refined mechanics but they removed the gang wars theme. Also 3 basically had activities disguised as story missions which I thought it was really cheap and lazy while 4 gave you super powers making the whole "GTA-clone" aspect of the series completely obsolete. Two was the peak. It added way more customization, planes and helicopters and bikes, interesting characters, the story was more interesting, it was just better.
I wouldn't say 3 or 4 had refined mechanics, considering the amount of stuff they removed.
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic They felt less janky and less "cheap" with better animations and art style. But indeed they removed so many stuff compared to 2 that even when getting all the DLC didn't even come close.
3 was still a gang war.
Saints Row 1 was easily the best for me, just for the online.
I am glad they removed gang wars theme...And what is the point of bikes when vehicle handling sucks?Characters are boring too so as story.
I am a gta fan yes but there are some games I like more than gta. I really tried to like sr2 but I couldn't. I just couldn't. Doesn't matter which way I am looking to sr2, compared to gta or other open world games. It is just nah not that good. I thought I will enjoy it but I left with disappointment.

Technically, fast travel via taxi is in this game, but you’ll need to enter the right phone number in the pause menu in order to use it.
"Closest you will get to a taxi in this game" you can call taxis with the phone menu and many many other numbers, also i believe there is a cruise control option
cruise control was added to 2 because drive by's were hard to effectively do.

This was my first 360 game. And I loved the sequel even more.
Saints Row 2 is the best imo.

Saints Row 2 felt like the actual successor to the III era GTA games in tone, gameplay and fun.

Fun fact if you turn your change the resolution from 1080p to 480p in the Xbox 360 dashboard menu, the frame-rate is way better and having vsync on to fix the screen tearing
Yeah, the screen tearing was obvious the second I saw the recorded footage. The capture card must of exposed that issue a bit more because it didn't look too bad when I was playing it; I should've pointed it out in the review...

I really appreciate how you mention reviewing under the context of its era, some reviewers usually get that over their head
but boy oh boy you're in for a treat with Saints Row 2
Activities were the best part of the SR series imo, fucking love Insurance Fruad, Crowd Control, etc
i dont understand how someone cant enjoy insurance fraud
What I don't like is how hard it is to reach threshold, especially when reaching a higher level, although throwing yourself out of a vehicle is funny in this game...
Problem is the activities you mentioned are in 2, not 1 so obviously Colourshed can't praise them in this particular review when they simply ain´t in the game.

Funnily enough, Saints Row's original test name "Bling Bling" ended up being the name of one of the businesses in Saints Row.

Uh, there's 3 different Taxi companies you can call in this game. The phone numbers can be found on some billboards and bus stops, and even the taxis themselves.

Man, I hated GTA 4. It took away some of the awesome customization and crazy weapons and vehicles from San Andreas and dialed everything back to be more "realistic."
I get why people may like it, I'm just not one of them.

Saints Row 4 was never banned in Australia. It was threatened to be banned, but they changed some things around and it was allowed.

Been watching you for about 2 years now and you still manage to entertain with a game I've put hundreds of hours into. Don't know if it's nostalgia or curiosity but your videos get me through the boring work hours.
God how i wish we could have a remastered version of this and 2 on all platforms, i've never even played this first game and always longed to.

@@davidroudebush6947 I don't own a series x and don't intend to, i don't have the space, i'd hope for a PC port at the very least.
A remaster would be nice the original to me was near unplayable with how dumb some design decisions were. Definitely watch the cutscenes here on RUclips but the gameplay is pretty bad. The worst was the the reload button being the same button as the pick up button so I was constantly losing my weapons for the crappy ones and wouldn't notice till I would go to switch weapons and notice I lost my gun
Seeing my man unable to use claw and used every other way to hold a controller hurt me.
I still loved this game back when I was a kid.

One of the best features of the saints row games is the fact that you can actually go on a cruise with the cars you’ve saved in your garage without being scared shitless about flipping it or blowing it up because it’ll always be in your garage FUCKING THANK YOU VOLITION
You don't shoot with the A button I don't know what kind of weird control scheme you were using and as far as Hitman goes it even says you need to kill them with a specific weapon the first time you start the activity. Also when it comes to the weapons why didn't you use the unlockables from the other activities or refill ammo are your crib?
I do love your reviews they're really enjoyable to listen to while doing other things but I just had a lot of issues with this one
Honestly drive by shooting is pretty good with the stock controls, A for driving, RB for shooting, and Left stick for arming, 2/3rds of those are in your right hand.

There's something about the simplicity of Saints Row 1 that always has me coming back to it. 1 and 2 were the peaks of Saints Row, in my opinion.

When Saints Row 2 came out it was basically the same as the first original game just an improved version of the first original game 👍🏻
As an AVID Saints Row player/content creator, I'd say you did a pretty good job covering SR1. You touched on the things that made it shine and also it's flaws. I HIGHLY recommend playing Saints Row 2 as they fixed a lot of the things you mentioned and added tons of new content that really set itself apart from being just "another GTA clone". Hope to see a SR2 review sometime in the future!

You forgot to mention the amount of detail in the game like the armpit hair that characters have each individual hair stands out it’s not just a single texture.
I hate the "GTA Clone" term, it's harmful and inaccurate towards the games

Mafia, atleast the first one, was never a GTA clone. It's development started in fact long before GTA 3.
Yeah true and it had better mission design it more like a movie but the ps2 port sucks xbox and pc are better ps2 had to much loading
It was also released the following year. I am not an expert on game design, but I would think that would give enough time to implement the GTA III-esque elements into the game.
@@jrpggolf yeah it could be true but only the real creator's of the game know the real answer but did you know that creator's of saints row exactly said they used gta as the blueprint
@@jrpggolf man, I don't know. If you look at early alpha and beta versions of the game - they was busy cutting out stuff from the game, not adding. Because they couldn't fit the game on the disk, and optimization was a problem too. So, they removed at least the third of what game used to be on early stages of development.

Saints Row 3 is where they stopped caring about the Storyline.

The first thing i did was tag every tag in the game and do every hitman missions to get get Infinite restock of ammo in the crib with best weapons and infinite sprint. LOL and the game was a breeze afterwards.

Playing SR2 for over a decade and then trying this was kind of a tough experience. So many gameplay tweaks are sorely missed. Small stuff that you don’t even think about until its gone.

I loved Saints Row 1 and 2. 3 had some good features but it was not as good. 4 was not Saints Row but having unlimited superpowers in a open world is still fun af to play.

driver fell off after 3. they are an irrelevant comparison.
Driver 2 came out in October of 2000, a full year before GTA 3 and it allowed you to get out of your vehicle and commit grand theft auto in a 3D open world environment. So yes, technically the term should be renamed to "Driver Clone", but honestly we all know that'll never happen. THIS IS MY FAVORITE GAME EVER
Those activities were one of the best thing about the game - also it is what makes a difference in comparison to GTA
I remember loving this game when it came out. Idk why but it blew my mind. I remember one thing in particular was that practically every phone number you saw you could call, that amazed me for some reason. But I’m also a sucker for character customization so I also thought that was amazing. Lol
SR2 Really improved on everything this game had,specially the activities.
I think 3RD was the most disappointing and shallow game in the series,its as wide as an ocean and as deep as a fuking glass of water
You should Definitely check out Saints row 2, but not on PC (except you want Gentelman of the Row) Saints row 2 is by far my Favorite in the Series, and is also very Polished.

@MrLoading It has it's moments, but most of it feels watered down compared to the first two games. The campaign is a bit too linear and you can't even replay the fun missions once completion.
Nah SR1 was the weakest in the main line series.
As a big Saints Row fan I'm glad you're finally getting to this game. The first game is very tough, and alot of the points you made at the end are very accurate. The saving grace however is that the sequel addresses many of these issues. Maybe I'm biased because Saints Row 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. I can't wait for the review on the second one. PS when you play the second game, wait on the start screen for the intro cutscene to play. It's a good 90 second cutscene to explain what happens after the first one and where the city of Stilwater is in the 5 years since (Cause SR2 takes play 5 years later) The cutscene is something I didn't know about for a long time, years after I played SR2. Anyways, thank you Colorshed for videos!

Good review. The driving/shooting mechanic tip is a good idea.
FYI, you can take a taxi to other parts of the map. It helps accelerate time.
You can call numbers, including a taxi. It won't take you to story mission markers or activities, but would take you to a store, stronghold, or crib, for up to $100.
Edit: You can do that same thing in Saints row 2 as well.

Saints Row 1 was the reason I got a 360, played a demo at my mate's place.
Especially after I saw the $999 price tag of the PS3 in Australia.
Insurance fraud is easy as hell. Get a police car shoot out the window and ram full speed into another vehicle. Lots lots of points

I had the same experience concerning the Side Activities... I still have way too much to do if I ever even want to consider getting all the Achievements! Which I have no intention of doing, thank you very much!
my cousin and i would always say "wrong time wrong place dawg" to eachother and so much that i completely forgot that it came from the intro of saints row.
Great review on SR. I just started playing this game to get a feel for how great it was in 2006. I don't think they nailed the driving controls, but for some reason this game drives better than Red Faction, so they mustve learned something. My Saints Row survival tips: Have some Basooms at Freckle Bitchs and let your "whistled in" allies wear down enemies so you can use less ammo and collect loot and bullets. Switch cars often, they can't take too much damage, and try not to get too many police following you during missions. I love listening to radio ads in Saints Row.
No games should have full on auto aim, ever, regardless of platform.
I don't remember if the 1st game has this or if it was added in the 2nd, but there is a cruse control feature so you don't have to worry about acceleration while driving and shooting

Taxis actually were a thing in this game. You have to call the number on the back of a cab.

16:13 gta sa also lets you shoot while in a car, and much better I might add.
This part with first person shooter freeroam was what made this game awesome
I think I'm now fine with this game not getting a PC port.

Saints Row The Third is when the series fully embraces its identity as "The Dumb Fun Version of GTA." Realistically, it's the only way they could've gotten out of GTA's increasingly serious shadow. You want Coke/Pepsi, not Coke/Diet Coke.
Except for the fact that 3 had a smaller map than 2 and it played like a cheap red faction. So if by “getting out of gtas shadow” means cutting back and cheapening the look, then yeah, they found their own identity.
I disagree. There was no need to "get out of GTA's shadow," when Saints Row 2 is to this day still better than anything Rockstar's made.

As much as I love _Saints Row 2_ , it really doesn't shine in comparison to most of Rockstar's works. _Vice City_ , _Bully_ , and both _Redemption_ games are absolute masterpieces and are far better than _SR2_ in terms of their writing, mechanics, and quality overall. However, I'll admit to say that it is a far better experience than _San Andreas_ . That game is just awful.

The only reason they coast by is because of their under-utilized setting.
Can't wait till you try SR2 i have so many fun memories for that game despite it being a broken mess on the pc.
I remember the first time I watched Saints Row 1. I was blown away by the graphics, they were amazing by the time and the fact it was an open world game was insane.
