I always find it irritating when people bring up the whole "GTA clone" argument. I know I already said this in my video, but SR3 is nothing more than GTA with more bathroom humor and SR4 is just another one of a million games about fighting aliens, which I'm getting sick of.
They're not entirely bad games, but they're definitely overrated and make rather pitiful excuses for spiritual successors.

What's utterly amazing is how well they follow you without getting stuck. I was playing with a friend and he said "wait where's the other gang members?" I said they're in another car they stole and have been following you. He literally stops and squarely looks at me. I said "seriously look behind you." You mentioned ammo being tedious to acquire, needing trip after trip to gun stores to restock, but if you finish some activities, you're rewarded with infinite ammo as well as unique weapons that can't be purchased in stores. It's a common speedrun strat to do 6 levels of FUZZ in the Projects in order to get the dual kobras as well as infinite pistol ammo so you can cut out shop visits entirely.

@ 5:56, that was one of many things I loved about Saints Row 2. I loved seeing the boss (who I customized to look like me) being so mean and intimidating. I love the whole anti-hero vs anti-hero premise that it used - as opposed to that overused good vs evil premise which I've grown bored of.

Saints Row 2 is honestly a marvel in terms of just how much was improved upon going from its predecessor to this. There is just so much to see and do in the game from customizing yourself to the weapons you can grab, the side-activities, the fun you can have when you just don't care like the cheats and as someone who was introduced to the series through this after the initial disappointment I felt for GTA IV? Honestly this is the kind of game I pictured in my head when I thought of a next-gen sandbox/GTA game and honestly? I quite dig the set-up with taking on three gangs because each story feels like it has a beginning, middle and end.
However, I do feel that the game has aged quite a bit from the visuals to some of its frustrating side-activities (Crowd Control in particular can go fuck itself.), aggravating missions that crank the difficulty up to the point of absurdity and it starts Volition's trend of making a really fun game while also removing features from the previous that did function well like the ability to gain super punches by getting really drunk and taking less damage from getting really high but other than that? It's a fun experience and I think honestly if the amount of content here was present in The Third and IV with only the most necessary streamlining needed to make the game more fun? I'd adore those two more than this game.

Normally, I would say that the first game in a story-driven franchise is the best. I mean come on, you can never (or most of the time at least) beat the originals in terms of their stories. However, Saints Row 2 is just one of those rare sequels that did. Not to mention the additions that Volition made to their already-established formula from the first game and I have to say, Saints Row 2 is one of the best sequels ever made, one of the best open-world games of all time (Top 50 at least), and the best in the series. Saints Row: The Third and IV ain't got shit on this game. This game was as close to perfection as Saints Row could possibly get.

The activities are worth doing not just for respect, but because the rewards you get from completing them are generally very useful (even if you don't care for Insurance Fraud, which is much better in SR2 because you can get some hilarious airtime in Adrenaline Mode, the reward for completing one of the instances is infinite sprint, and you can also unlock infinite ammo and reduced damage from vehicle impacts from other activities). Plus, when you complete a few activities to level 8 or 10 or whatever the max level is to get the rewards, you end up earning so much respect you can pretty much mainline the story missions from there on. I've reached infinite respect on multiple playthroughs without even touching some activities!

The thing that I really like about SR2 is the mechanics of being able to smash post boxes (in SR4 you can...sort of do the same when you equip the laser katana) and best of all pick anything to use as a weapon, something I wish the later games had as well. Well executed review.

GTA IV is way more polished. Saints Row was really fun though. But hearing that they started making Saints Row 2 before Saints Row 1 was released explains a lot about the lack of graphical detail.
The creativeness of Saints Row outweighs GTA IV though. Being able to customise almost everything is great and also being able to use real world objects to beat up your enemies with.

Great review. This is one of my favorite games, and certainly my favorite Saints Row. I loved 3, but wasn't big on the exaggerated character designs. 4 went way over the top and stopped being Saints Row to me. I loved having multiple gangs to fend off in a turf war. And I never wanted to be a superhero or the president. I just wanted to be a badass gangster building my own little empire.

    • @mattc2306

Same. I felt like 2 and 3 were perfect action-comedy hybrids.
4 felt a bit too comic book-esque. While it had its moments, like the Streets of Rage parody, I was not a fan of the superpowers because I spent most of my time jumping across buildings and sprinting like the Flash, neither of which seem fun to me.

Your roundup of the review is the exact reason why a lot of Saints Row (2) fans hope to see Volition returning features that were available in the first 2 games in the franchise. They have been silent for quite some time now and after Agents of Mayhem even the fanbase has gone pretty silent... I hope they’re going to announce the next game this year and i hope that of they do it this year that we will get what we have been asking for since the release of Saints Row 4.
Also, a bit of advice for when you start playing Saints Row 4: don’t look at it too much as a Saints Row game as the differences are enormous! The core gameplay of it is pretty good and the game itself is very enjoyable but it’s nothing like Saints Row 3 and that’s truly saying something.

  • @DiddyHop

There's a cruise control button for drive bys. basically keeps the car moving consistently so you only need to worry about steering and aiming.
Also, you can unlock buffs to your stats, discounts and exclusive items with activities.
Also if you max out your respect you unlock Infinite respect. I recommend looking on a wiki for what activies unlock the buffs and infinite ammo weapons and doing all them, and then looking toward what else you want to unlock and getting that to max out your respect.
lastly i've never really noticed the issue with the empty streets... maybe cause i'm playing the xbox 360 version?
I noticed the frame-rate in this footage seems a bit worse too (although it's still bad on the 360)

With the customization you could be literally anyone I would start the game over and role play as a cop, homeless person, prison guard, firefighter, paramedic the possibilities were endless. The biggest problem with the PC port is that the game's speed is tied to your processor clock speed. Most of the issues seem to spiral out from that decision. It was also a problem with Red Faction Guerilla.

  • @PresidentKony

during development of SR2 they were working on creating Geo-Mod 2.0 (Red Faction Guerilla) and at one point tried to implement all the destruction we came to know in RF:G. Someone's probably mentioned it already, but all named Homies are on a cooldown. They'll stay with you until dismissed or you die I think, even continuing through saving and reloading from my experience, but after they're gone you have to wait a short bit before calling them back. Afterwards, you can call them again. It isn't a long cooldown by any means.
Also, it is absolutely possible to avoid missiles while in a helicopter, I've done it many times. In a plane? Dunno, haven't flown any yet.
