Freeze the lower ball joint and heat the control arm! Cool little trick I learned over the years. Ice plant near me gives me a free chunk of dry ice, if your lucky the ball joint will just drop right in 👍🤙
Nice thanks for the tip!
Funny thing, my name is Clyde and I got a 1998 chevy k3500. You got my attention.
that's awesome! are you needing to rebuild the front end?
@@DaysofPainandVictory actually did most of it last yr, but I want to raise it now about 1 or 2 inches. Looking at torsion key kits to raise it.
@@clydeusa6596 Cool, let me know how it goes, I'd like to lift mine a little too, but don't want it to ride any rougher than it does now
@@DaysofPainandVictory I will.
I am hoping not to make it a rougher ride, too.
Thank you for the video currently doing a complete rebuild of a 92k3500 myself
Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions!
great info there, those ball joints and bushings are always a wrestling match! ding ding we have a winner
yeah this job wiped me out! Whenever I get a shop I'm gonna invest in a shop oven for heating stuff up like gears and control arms
Great Video, I'm about to do the same to my 99 Classic K3500 fleetside. I was looking at your parts list and you list the K6477 for the lower ball joint, everything I'm seeing online is saying K6509 is the right part for the forged arms. In the video you mentioned having to order the other part so I'd like to double check before I order my parts. Psyched on the video, this will be my 4th time doing one of these rebuilds on a vehicle but it's always nice to find a video of someone doing almost the exact same truck!
I’ll have to dig a little bit, both those part numbers say they fit the 1500s on summit, which I thought the 1500s had stamped arms.
you are correct, K6509 is for the forged arms, I'll update my list, thank you!
@@DaysofPainandVictory Awesome, thanks for checking! Hope to start on this project this weekend.
Little late to the party just found your channel, I love the Wrangler Duratracs have had several sets
Cool thanks! I ended up getting the falken wild peak at3w’s, I like them so far
Great video. I'm doing a 98 k3500 resto myself and curious what your thoughts are on the steering stabilizer and the poly bushings after driving on them for a bit. Did you notice a difference?
Honestly I couldn’t tell ya since I changed so much at once. It definitely tracks better and got rid of the brake shimmy I had. The only thing I didn’t change is the pitman arm and I should have, still have some slop there. Thanks for watching!
Are 3 ton Jackstands good enough or do I need 6 ton? Have same truck
I would say bigger is better on this one, the truck weighs 8k, I know I can't bench press that much
Which direction were the part numbers on your control arms facing? I got everything stripped off and painted and can’t remember which direction everything was going! Mine is a 97 k2500
must be talking about the uppers? I think the lowers can only go back on one way. I can look in the morning
@@DaysofPainandVictory sorry, yes the uppers!
@@scubasteve6912 sorry I’m just now getting back to you, I can’t see any part numbers on mine? I just made sure to keep the parts separate. Also, the abs lines clip on the front so if you still can see where those were that might help
make it easy on yourself . go to local autoparts store and rent the ball joint press kit designed to do the job
yeah those ball joint presses are a pain too, I wanted to make my press work, especially since i had the control arms pulled. The ball joint presses are a must for a solid axle though. With some modifications I think the hydraulic press would work the best for the control arms. Thanks for watching
Hey man awesome video, I’m planning on changing everything on my front end and wanted to know if you could help me name the parts, I’d highly appreciate it thank yoh
I could probably put together the parts list I used for ya, give me a day
I didn't see where you removed the torsion bars. Thanks for the video though!
When I pulled the lower control arm bolts and popped it out of the mount, it just slid forward off the torsion bar. Thanks for watching!
@@DaysofPainandVictory ok thanks, I was worried I would need to unload the bar
I put a floor jack under it and slowly unloaded it, but at full droop there’s no tension on it
Did you have to do anything with the torsion bars?
No, just let down the jack slowly once the knuckle was disconnected. When the lower control arm drooped all the way down I was able to slide it off the torsion bar
Why not leave the ball joints in the freezer overnight?
Yeah my buddy suggested the same thing, good idea for sure.
