“I know the PlayDate is the strangest device I’ve ever made a video about” It’s the reason why I found you on RUclips and why I’m staying. I got one myself and everything you said felt very recognisable.
Nice one! I actually have a Playdate myself, but I really need to give that planner app a shot I've really had my eye on it! My solution for the last year has been Rocketbook, I have a flip pad and I cut one of the pages out. I write a to-do list on it, I can back it up, transcribe the title and wipe it with a wet cloth to erase. Also got another A5 one for RUclips notes. It's another good analog solution!
@WFH For those who don't own a Playdate I understand there comments. I was one who thought a month or two down the road I will rarely look at my PD after a couple years its still a daily device and I love it and the creativity that surrounds it more than ever ❤😊
I love my Playdate too and I hadn’t thought of trying these apps. I also thrive on novelty and creating unique workflows and systems. This video is also cool timing for me, as I am a developer and trying to think of what I could build for the tiny console. I hadn’t even thought about a non-game app. Do you have any ideas for something you wish existed?
An eBook reader… sounds crazy, but having a place to throw ePubs / txt / rtf files and view them on that B&W display could be really neat, like a miniature kindle. Especially if the filing system is a joy to navigate, and the device remembers where each file was last scrolled to. Could even integrate with the easy-reading version of Instapaper or maybe display RSS feeds. Another idea is a Word of the Day app; launch it and it shows a random word and its definition. Maybe add some whimsicality where shaking the playdate, or spinning the crank flips through other random words with a playful almost slot-machine inspired animation.
Personally, I'd like to have an alarm, a calculator, and a command-style memo. I think it's interesting to have an application that allows you to crank through a specific to-do list and get statistics, or to view your mood and achievement rate in a specific format.
@@atari2602 Thanks so much for leading me in the right direction! I searched it up and found that it's specifically Nyandanoid, an Arkanoid clone specifically for the Playdate!
You can, this is a niche product that’s for sure but there’s a market for it still. The software provide for game development is simple (no coding required) and there’s a lot of free games for play date.
it's just tech and devices addiction at this point, gadget p0rn or watever you can call it. Admit you just like beautiful gadget and tech and in no way using this Playdate as a planner is useful. You will stop using it after a week. I dont want to sound too negative, i like your channel still because i like tech and gadget too lol
I mean I feel like you didn't watch this through to the end lol, in that it is not really an argument for using the playdate as a planner is useful for most people. Also dude's used it for a year, at least he's said that.
I completely understand that reaction. That's a big reason why I didn't end this video with a recommendation for people to buy. It's a lot for a very niche solution.
Cool idea and an awesome video, you always deliver! However, I truly don't get your decision to base this concept on the term "analog." PlayDate does not feel analog, just like a Casio F-91W does not feel analog, despite being far more simple than a PlayDate. A hand crank or tactile buttons do not make a digital device feel analog. "This is offline, this is old-school" ≠ analog either. Plenty of offline, old-school devices are digital. I think better terms would be intentional simplicity, minimalist design, internet-free device, etc.
Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback. I believe you are correct, analog may not be the most accurate term but I thought it was the term that would get the message across for most people who've never touched one before, if that makes sense. Similar to the screen, it's not actually "e-ink", but it's the closest term I think most people would understand. Again, thanks for the feedback!
Heyyyyy!!!! This vid is beautiful and wonderful! Big love from the community!
That icon pack takes me back about a decade when i was rooting and customizing my phone every day. I need that

My play date sits on my desk while I search Amazon for a new clock. What a cool idea, thank you!
you're using it like a palm pilot. my dad had one of those and i always wanted one as a kid lol
Exactly, or to go even further back - a CASIO digital diary.
This is awesome! Just in time! I'm getting my unit next week!
You will enjoy it!
Is the stereo dock ever going to be available for pre-order?
"Analog office Assistant"....you mean like a notebook? 😏
Cool idea! Now I'm looking around for things to tinker with lol.

Ahhh finally one I already own. Phewf.
ik I'm more than a bit late, but could you link the pocket planner app somewhere?
Time to see if this is in a regret video in 6months
So is it?

something about designing a little game for the playdate using it's limitations as a strength is so inspiring.

How is the play date now? You still use it?
I ordered one to try out. I have been debating it for a while.
How is it?
this device looks so cleeeaaann.
Interesting concept!
Would anyone happen to know what the brick-breaker at 4:26 is called? The title is clearly on screen, but I can't make out what it says 😕
Arkanoid. Classic brick breaker from Taito.

Honestly, I want the play date just to do what you're doing.
"It feels analogue!"
I was hoping to love it, but while it is cute, my eyes are just not good enough for that screen.
@WorkFromHype The Playdate has been on my radar for a while, thanks for featuring it!
Probably can make something like this with a M5 stack
Couldn't you get one of those gameboy/ds emulators that have a n old school color screen? Only thing missing would be the crank thing.
You can, this is a niche product that’s for sure but there’s a market for it still. The software provide for game development is simple (no coding required) and there’s a lot of free games for play date.
"I use Google Calendar like everyone else" - well I don't, I use org-mode :P I now wonder if org-mode could be combined with this device.
You didn't convince me but fun video
Cool gadget, but im not sure if its worth 200 dollars

200$ is to be honest is a lot....i can understand the analog part but still not worth the price in my opinion.
I completely understand that reaction. That's a big reason why I didn't end this video with a recommendation for people to buy. It's a lot for a very niche solution.
He sold the F-- out of this with this video.
😩Now I want one
……Shit!😖

"I need novelty to be productive". Sounds like ADHD lol
I think you have an internet addiction problem.
🤩👏
That thing is $200?!?!?! That's insane! I was gonna try one after this video assuming it would be like $30.
Desk gadgets don't cost 200$
$199? I would pass.
I love the video but no part of any of this is analog.
