@rayminishi689 I mean, DS was one of the few systems with cheap flashcarts actually. GBA Flashcarts with RTC run you over 80 or $100 bucks. GB/GBC a bit less. Good flashcarts for SNES and Genesis are definitely pricier than an R4 cart. The SC64's price IS amazing though, for sure. But part of why R4's were so cheap is that the DS barely had any security. Making a small cartridge with an SD card is already cheap with few parts, and since the DS itself handled the Real Time Clock and other features, DS flash carts could focus on just loading the games and not much else.
The hardware required for a flashcart for a system such as the SNES will never be under $100. Original SNES cartridges came with a variety of chips that take a large FPGA to run. x7 isn't ridiculously priced. Comparatively yes, but $200 will get you the entire N64 library. Compare that to one used game on eBay. That's the nature of the free market.
@@RealAlphaDrum Of course it's ridiculously priced when $50 will also get me the entire N64 library (plus the 64DD and Aleck 64 ones). I don't need to make silly apples to oranges comparisons when two people are both selling apples, but one's charging a third of the price of the other. Even better, they're giving away seeds for free so that anyone can grow their own apple tree if they have the time and dedication. I have a lot of respect for what Krikzz has done for the flash card market over the years, but the pricing for a lot of the Everdrives is simply unrealistic in 2025 - especially when you consider the fact that many have been equalled and some outright surpassed by other carts. That's also the nature of the free market, as you put it.
My god, thank you! I was really thinking about buying a X7, but because our currency and taxes on my country, I would have to pay about U$ 250. This will save my skin!
It's a 10/10 product, love it so much I bought 2, one for me and another for a friend. It's compatibility with retail games is amazing. I remember older flash carts having issues with retail games, glad this product is so much more affordable alternative.
This is the infomation I actually, absolutely want MVG. There is so much scamware out there its important to document what actually works and what "works" and what just flat out doesnt. Especially for the homebrew scene.
Would be great if the aliexpress and other sellers would send some funds back to the developer of this. this is a fantastic labor of love that provides a lot to the community they are likely not sharing with the creator
I just picked one up too and finally tried it last week (after installing the HiSpeedDo HDMI mod).. it loads nice and quick and works absolutely great! Just need to figure out how the save states work now..
I have one too. Seems to automatically set the right type of save according to the game. What I couldn't figure out was if there was a way to save in games to the cart that required the memory card.
Imported my N64 from Japan at launch cost me every penny I owned, had to wait a week before I could afford to buy a game and wait another week for it to come from Japan. Sitting looking at my N64 for 2 weeks before I could play it was the worst gaming experience of my life, however when I got to load up Mario 64 for the first time it all became worth it, I definitely cried happy tears 😅
I feel that. I remember getting an N64 for Christmas and not being able to play it for like 6 months! I think our TV lacked composite input or something (I remember my SNES used the RF switch) and so I had it in box for so long. Think that's why I'm able to wait for things I want nowadays...
That's one of the biggest sells of the PS1 unfortunately. Was the fact you could use it for something. Buying a n64 without a game was such a depressing feeling especially given you waited years after the PS1 to finally get your hands on it...
@@elSteeler Haha, I used a madcat composite to RF converter back in the day for a long time....until I had access to a TV with the composite connection
I'm glad we're getting competition for flash carts. If you actually look up the components that go into making flash carts their cost simply doesn't justify the amount of money sellers like Krikzz charge for the finished product, and the main reason they've been able to get away with these ridiculously high prices is due to a complete lack of competition.
Last spring I picoboot modded my Gamecube and built a GBS-Control upscaler. Then I looked at my Wii HBC and realized I'm barely making use of all the cool things Homebrew can do with Wiiflow and its plugins. Now, I totally have to get one of these SummerCart's. I feel like this gets said every few years, but we're really in a golden age of retro gaming and emulation. This could what gets me to do an RGB mod on my N64. Sort of a dream of mine to eventually play Kaze Emanuar's Return to Yoshi's Island on real hardware, but the Everdrive's are prohibitively expensive.
Neat project. I personally still prefer emulation with RetroArch on my beefy PC. It has so much more features and I don't need the original hardware and a CRT. But I do not dismiss such alternatives and this Summer Cart looks really interesting. If I were into flash carts, this would be the thing I try.
Awesome! I had an old N64 sitting in storage for a long time, the other day I just repaired it and I've been stuck whether to collect physically or get an everdrive. Perfect alternative.
This could not have come at a better time. I was looking at my carts and feeling pretty down, looked at Everdrives, then decided to wait until the morning. BAM! Thanks MVG!
Finally, we can make Krikzz sweat. I hope this is the start of a major shift to provide fully featured flashcarts for consoles while undercutting his business.
X7 is solid. Loads everything fast and I can just backup memory packs, name the files, and know which Pak has what in it. Then zip them up and put them on the cloud.
Welp been waiting on buying an everdrive and because of this video, I did. Just grabbed a black SC64 off AliExpress. Paid 57 bucks after taxes. Hoping its as great as whats shown in this video 😊
The Disk Change button on the back should work in conjunction with running 64DD games when connecting your cart to a PC. You can pass the disk files from your PC to the cart when connected via USB using a terminal, and the button would be used to tell the cart to expect a disk change.
What a great product and price. when i was a kid we bought one of the original Mr Backup devices for $399+shipping. over $400 in mid 90s money was a lot and even the everdrive pricing i think is decent. This really nails it.

MVG love your content Would love to see more vids like this about modern hardware upgrades for retro systems and best methods for improving video quality on retro systems
Thanks for carts like this and Taki for making retro emulation more affordable. These price gougers are taking a real hit these days and i'm here for it! Lower your prices or get outdone.
Thanks for the heads-up! Now I wonder, what options do we have these days for Action Replay functionality on the N64? I had one back in the day with the parallel port on the back and man, that was the KILLER feature. Hacking away as a teenager on N64 memory through my Windows PC was amazeballs.
For original games and repros, your options are old Action Replays, GameSharks, and N64 Passports. Everdrives have this functionality built in, since using an original cheat cart will just brick it. You currently can’t use cheats with a Summercart, but apparently the code has been written for it, but no one had made a UI for it, so it can’t be used. But since it’s open-source, it will eventually be finished and you’ll be able to update your Summercart.
I have a fall 2023 ED64 X7 (from stoneagegamers): LOADING ROMs feels extremely fast in most case (almost instant on smaller files) and the longest files (games like GoldenEye or RE2) are between 3-4 seconds.
This video was perfect timing because I just bought a Summercart a couple days ago and just waiting for it to arrive. I’m glad to see it looks like I made a good purchase because I looked at the Everdrive but didn’t really want to spend the money.
I've had an ED64 for a few years now. It's basically an X5 clone. I was always happy with it and recommended it as a cheap alternative, unless you wanted to actually support the creator, which I encouraged people to do if they could afford it. But this looks like a much better alternative for the same price. If I ever decide to upgrade to a cart that doesn't need reset held down to save, I'll probably go with this one.
As you must know, the X7 doesn't have this monstrous load time for each game. I'd say that's worth it on its own especially if you got the black friday deal at krikzz.
@@jae42619 Because of the price point and the simple to use USB interface in conjunction to the software being open source, this is going to be an international hit. I wouldn't worry about stock running out after they have seen the demand for this product.
Cool! We have an open source version of the N64 flashcard. Now is it possible to implement an E-ink display on the flashcard itself that will allow us to display cartridge art on the cartridge while we're playing our N64 games? You know, to complete the look.
Perfect timing. I was thinking of getting a Everdrive due to the new Analog 64 console that’s coming out soon. Might have to get this instead. Great review
Thank the lord for aliexpress vendors selling stuff like this for reasonable prices. Krigs and other western makers of retro gaming addons are excessively greedy.
I wouldn't say the western brands are greedy. They are after all having to use an Eastern supply chain and take their cut. It's neither trivial nor cheap to undertake such an endeavour.
They really need to get the gameshark thing done. Maybe even have an app on a computer that could be used to insert codes easier. Or even load from a txt file. I really enjoyed some of the silliness we could do with old gamesharks.
The N64FlashcartMenu project is entirely done by volunteers who are enthusiastic about the project, and that's where cheats would be implemented. They don't see any of the money from sales of the carts, so if you're wanting to support them, the best thing you can do is dig into the code and work on the features you'd like to see.
I picked one of these up in like november last year because I wanted a more permanent solution for my N64 gaming. I had considered an Everdrive in the past, but the price of the things really put me off getting one. For my money, the price you pay for a SummerCart64 is well worth it, all the functionality of the EverDrives but for a fraction of the cost.
With a large cartridge collection from when the system was current and the years afterwards when the games were a dime a dozen at places like GameStop in the mid 2000's, I could never justify an Everdrive 64 for what it would gain me. But this is the perfect price point to gain access to what I missed out on that's now price prohibitive (Stunt Racer 64 is a perfect example).
Thank you for making this video! I've wanted a flash cart for a while now, but everdrive was a bit too expensive. I just ordered a summer cart. Thank you.😊
Yes and no. Development has stopped on the SC64 firmware, mainly due to lack of volunteer support. The N64FlashcartMenu is still being actively developed, but don't take the free work of the developers for granted. That said, anyone willing to put in the work can add whatever improvements they would like to see.
I have a question about the SummerCart64. When using the 64DD method to run F-Zero X.. Could you launch the Gameshark rom and then a game with this? You mentioned that Gameshark codes don't work yet. Thanks and great find!
I just had to look it up, I had no idea the N64 ever got a CD drive. But seeing how it was 't released in North America and wasn't a large seller it's no wonder it flew past me.
IMO the best ways to experience N64 games are on original hardware on a CRT over S-Video or one of the PC native recomps on a steam deck oled or similar.

@CaptainKenway tldr. Brevity is your friend.
My god, thank you!
I was really thinking about buying a X7, but because our currency and taxes on my country, I would have to pay about U$ 250.
This will save my skin!
Já sei de qual país você é sem nem precisar perguntar rsrs
@Vinicius_Berger Make the L man 😅
Great overview, man! If i was in the market for a N64 flash cart today this would be ny top choice.
Just in time for the Analogue 3D.
nah, Jailbreak will be ready on release for sure
@@Puretea4711 Don't be so sure, it took ages for the Duo jailbreak to arrive.
@@Puretea4711when has the jailbreak ever been released Day 1? It’s usually 6-12 months after launch.

You couldn’t have dropped this video at a better time for me! Picking up a crt tomorrow just for the n64 and now I’m ordering this!!!!!
Really awesome! I love supporting Krikzz and his team (they've always made quality stuff IMO), but it's nice that there are alternatives out there!
I recently bought an N64 for the first time, so this is something to consider for me
One feature I hope they add soon is the capability to save and load controller pack contents
Time to retire my Doctor 64 Jr and the windows 98 SE machine I have to run it?
Yes! I have the SummerCart 64 and is so much better than any other card and it just costs 50 bucks!
@@rolux4853 Where did you buy it for just $50?
@@rolux4853 Well what I had was top tier in 1998...
My friend from HK had that and we were all so jealous
Neat project. I personally still prefer emulation with RetroArch on my beefy PC. It has so much more features and I don't need the original hardware and a CRT. But I do not dismiss such alternatives and this Summer Cart looks really interesting. If I were into flash carts, this would be the thing I try.
Sure , both worlds have pros and cons.
The static recompilation of Majoras Mask is absolutely breathtaking. Sadly, very few games in the N64 library have been decompiled.
Love having new options other than official Everdrives!
Awesome! I had an old N64 sitting in storage for a long time, the other day I just repaired it and I've been stuck whether to collect physically or get an everdrive. Perfect alternative.
Yeah, I love my summercart 64, it does everything I would expect it to
This could not have come at a better time. I was looking at my carts and feeling pretty down, looked at Everdrives, then decided to wait until the morning. BAM! Thanks MVG!
I ordered this about a month ago. Works great. It's nice not to be swapping games all the time and wearing them out.
Finally, we can make Krikzz sweat. I hope this is the start of a major shift to provide fully featured flashcarts for consoles while undercutting his business.
I was thinking about buyin this yesterday... I'm gonna buy this now because after this video the price will go up.
It's sold out
@@SomeRetroGuy On Aliexpress it's still normal business. There are several versions of this there. I already got one.
The best part of getting one of these for me was playing NTSC ROMs on a PAL N64 when I was in Australia. I didn't even realize it emulated the 64DD.
I've been putting off getting an N64 Flashcart for a while. Just put in my order on Aliexpress. Thanks for the awesome review MVG!
I got the $48 red cart from Amazon and runs everything Everdrive can do. It’s a great cheap alternative. Everdrive is BOT worth that high ass price.
This thing sounds amazing, as someone with a 64 and just a few games, im really impressed by this
I got one a few months ago; I love it. Playing Homebrew including Randomizers on OG hardware is amazing
MisterFPGA + NSO wireless controllers is my favourite way :)
its really good
I thought NSO controllers have input lag
@@otterdonnelly9959 Yep, most of my setup has lag according to tests but I haven't ever noticed or cared.
Just NSO itself
I ain't even mad about no GameShark support, that thing is a steal
New MVG vid in 2025 discussing a more affordable N64 flash cart for a poor Canadian like myself? Yup... y'know I queued this one up!
Thanks man. This really helped and I just put and order through for one of these bad boys! Can't wait!
You rock!
This looks awesome! I really hope more platforms get similar high quality open-source solutions.
MVG love your content
Would love to see more vids like this about modern hardware upgrades for retro systems and best methods for improving video quality on retro systems
So about the same as the summer cart 64
About 4 months too late 😅 I picked up a N64 and a X7 for the "family" for Christmas
As you must know, the X7 doesn't have this monstrous load time for each game. I'd say that's worth it on its own especially if you got the black friday deal at krikzz.
I have had this since release months ago. I'm glad to see it being shared now. Love mine.
Summer Cart will be the Everdrive killer
Aaaaand SOLD OUT
There are other vendors selling it on Ali
There's plenty of other vendors with stock on Ali.
@@jae42619 Because of the price point and the simple to use USB interface in conjunction to the software being open source, this is going to be an international hit. I wouldn't worry about stock running out after they have seen the demand for this product.
@@austinkoeppen6122won't be long and they'll be sold out too
Nope
Dude, great video. Please tell us more about your N64 homebrew project(s)!
Oh wow, my fingers are itching to dev on the N64, and it starting to feel like I’m running out of excuses… thanks for another great video!
From just the thumbnail, I thought you had a Space Cop game on the N64.
I was soo confused.
RichEvansDrive64 🙃
With a large cartridge collection from when the system was current and the years afterwards when the games were a dime a dozen at places like GameStop in the mid 2000's, I could never justify an Everdrive 64 for what it would gain me. But this is the perfect price point to gain access to what I missed out on that's now price prohibitive (Stunt Racer 64 is a perfect example).
Bought it 2 weeks ago, great review, thanks!
Super cool product! Thanks for the review!
Thank you for making this video! I've wanted a flash cart for a while now, but everdrive was a bit too expensive.
I just ordered a summer cart.
Thank you.😊
I guess one positive is that, unlike the Everdrive, the project is open source, so updates will be far more frequently compared to the Everdrive.
Yes and no. Development has stopped on the SC64 firmware, mainly due to lack of volunteer support. The N64FlashcartMenu is still being actively developed, but don't take the free work of the developers for granted.
That said, anyone willing to put in the work can add whatever improvements they would like to see.
Perfect timing. I was just about to dig out my old N64 hardware. 🎉
Holy moly! I had no idea this existed. Thanks for letting me know! I guess holding back in buying an X7 all this time actually paid off lol
I have a question about the SummerCart64. When using the 64DD method to run F-Zero X.. Could you launch the Gameshark rom and then a game with this? You mentioned that Gameshark codes don't work yet. Thanks and great find!
i just got my summer cart, it was cool playing N64 DD on real hardware
I just had to look it up, I had no idea the N64 ever got a CD drive.
But seeing how it was 't released in North America and wasn't a large seller it's no wonder it flew past me.
@@volvo09 The DD wasn't really a CD drive, it was a proprietary high capacity floppy disk like the Famicom disk drive.
Love this channel I have been a subscriber for years, it’s great to have such a wonderful hobby.
Just ordered one because of this video. Have been eying a Everdrive for years but thought they were a bit expensive, going to try this. Thanks!
the moment this video got posted it almost got sold out on aliexpress
This is pretty awesome, I had a V5, paid about $70 for it, I think they were having a sale that day
Thank you MVG! I've been in the market for a N64 Flashcart, and now I know what to get. Cheers!
Wow, I just bought a N64 and this is what I've been looking for.
Thanks for the review.
Yay! I have been waiting for this video since I found out about it!
i think this flash cart would be best for people who are getting into making games on a budget. with it usb to pc feature is great feature too.
Bought it recently, glad I did it before it became so popular!
I have one called the Super 64, its similar to these but in a red cart loaded with all the roms. It was $70 about a year ago
Perfect timing!! I was about to buy an X7 for the Analogue 3D I ordered.
IMO the best ways to experience N64 games are on original hardware on a CRT over S-Video or one of the PC native recomps on a steam deck oled or similar.
