Also, this was the second encore after a 2.5 hr concert! John Lennon is also known to have said that THIS is how the song was meant to be sung but that Beatles managers etc made them make it a pop song.
Also, this wasn't even the last encore! He came back out after this for another 2 songs!
I was at this concert. I was 6 years old. John made me want to become an entertainer myself and he will always be in my top 3 ever along with Michael Jackson and Celine Dion. A true Aussie icon.
You won't get better than John Farnham from Australia. He sings with such passion.

John farnham is phenomenal. His duet with Olivia Newton John is another tearjerker, but just beautiful. To dry up those tears, I suggest some Farnham contemporaries (they did the same weekly Bandstand TV shows in Oz decades ago) the Bee Gees. Too Much Heaven, the official video from 1978 is breathtakingly beautiful. Thanks for doing this one.

The way you reacted to this is exactly how it should be. When John Lennon wrote this, it was a cry for help that the world never heard.
It came out as a pop song and because of the upbeat tempo of the song it was never heard.

If this song has affected you like this, I'm just wondering how Please Don't Ask Me from The Main Event Concert, a duet by John with Olivia Newton John; I'm pretty sure, it will open a floodgate of emotion for you.
This concert was advertised as John and his Big Band in typical Aussie understatement, it's a 100+ piece orchestra for crying out loud. lol
A couple of songs worth checking have been mentioned below, plus these are worth a look also.
Notice how he holds the mike below his chest, both mikes are a metre away, which he does all the time to not drown out the other singers.

Yep, we all need HELP. No man is an island, nobody does everything on their own. Especially not beloved John Farnham (pronounced "Farn'um"), who has had his own troubels with his career needing help! (John is Australia's national treasure, aka 1988 Australian Of The Year, on the 200th anniversary of the white discovery(*) of Australia by Capt Cook). Thank you for your teary reaction, this version of his has the SAME EFFECT ON ME! 🥲😭😭😭
