The mark of a true watch guy. Releases his own brand but keeps reviewing others as normal. Just shows he's not afraid of competition and that he enjoys all watches not just the one he designed.

Business as usual. Erebus will feature a few times per year, when appropriate, but apart from that, nothing changes.
If and I say if his watch business becomes successful, this may become a problem for him. Selling your own watch brand and also fairly reviewing watches from your competitors. At some point he may not be able to do both. Honestly though, I think his watch selling days will be numbered. This is a tough business to be in and the odds are he won't make it. I wish him luck though.
I love the watch. In my opinion, it would look classier without the branding on the side of the case. I like the color scheme of the nylon strap. I think drab green color works especially well with the brushed bracelet. I LOVED the knurled crown.
Having grown up on the banks of the Tugela, literally in the shadows of the Drakensberg, I have no choice… I just have to get it.😊
Absolutely love my drab/steel bezel Tugela. I believe the indices at 3 and 9 are based on the Protea flower, native to South Africa. Just a stunner…
Looks good. Love the olive drab colorway as well. Can't help but see a reese's peanut butter cup from the side profile shot due to that bezel.

I like the lumed date wheel
Ordered mine after watching the review(10/14) and it's arrived already (10/18). Just like your video, the unboxing is a treat and the watch is terrific in the "metal". 10/29, I've waited until now to take the watch out and adjust the bracelet, set the date & time and check the bezel action. This watch by far has the best bezel action any and the feel at the crown while setting is smooth as butter. The over all finish is flawless. Draken has set a very high bar in my opinion.
That's a beautiful watch overall, and I do appreciate it when watches are delivered with an extra strap. I do agree with you, engravings on the side of the case make it look cheap. Nice video!
I like the design, a few nits… needs applied indices, screws instead of pushpins, get rid of the case engraving.

That flared coin edge looks *so* cool. Nice looking all around, really. From my experience with the Aoraki, it's clear this brand is pretty thoughtfully designed. Although there's a sense of beefiness, things are well refined. Unfortunately, this one is probably slightly too big for my tastes.
Cool watch. Ticks all the boxes. When I see Draken, I hear Saab. It should have the crown stuck randomly through the glass at 9. Then it would snatch the serious thick-spectacles market from Nomos.
Ok, I haven’t even seen the watch and they just blew everyone away with their packaging. I mean, WTF, Draken for the win.
Yet another watch I was tempted to get ,just love double drab green. But watching your review, the case reminds me of Zelos Swordfish. The case thickness does suit my small wrist, like all the Helm watches I own and like but hardly ever wear and when I think of it ,2 of my many Orient watches (one dive and one field) have similar green.
It's really... unique! I mean, it is a diver for sure, it has all that you can find on a diver but with an original twist. The more I look at, the more I discover little touches of design.
The "cupcake" shape of the case for example, maybe it's not beautiful but it's peculiar for sure!
The crown, grippy and original, the side of the bezel, the hands, the hour markers, the round date window (are the numbers of the date lumed?) even the back (and I don't like the picture engraved) it's original. It's all familiar, but with a personal twist. And the final result is really chunky but for sure not boring.
Finally a microbrand with a lot of original ideas!
(of course Erebus have the same pros 😝 )

I love the flat finish on the bezel. Interesting case, great color, good looking bracelet (The 22mm width is so proportional with the rest of the watch). GOOD LUME! A little thick for just having printed indices but I really like it.
The Tugela is indeed a sight to behold as it flows around the Drakensberg and empties into the Indian Ocean. Know it well. And a lovely watch!
I love the look of a bead blasted finish. The problem is, once the surface gets scratched up it's much harder to clean up that type of finish compared to a brushed surface.

Cool watch and company. And I like the ultra dependable nh movements, but they are inexpensive so the price point of their watches is high based on the specs.
Nice review mate. I remember checking one of these out a couple of years ago (the 'Red') and I was pretty impressed with it. It's good that they keep improving it with each new iteration.

Really loving that one. Keeps popping up on Instagram but nothing compared to your excellent review as always Jody. Great colour and design, I can even forgive the case engraving. Just such a shame it’s too thick, would gladly settle for 200m and a thinner case please next time?
I must admit, I really like it. The unique indices, lumed date wheel and lumed crown are really nice touches as well as the perfect touches of orange. Jody, it would be interesting to know how the lume tests out here vs the Erebus, but I'm sure you don't want that put into the review....
I think Jody's fair to only compare the Erebus Origin to the best he's previously tested. He could make it the new benchmark for all lumed items, but we'd tire of that before the lume fades.
Me and Mike had a cross up with me ordering and I had to cancel. My fault. All was good until it got shipped anyway even after my credit card was reimbursed. We got it straightened out and all is well. The man is a professional and Draken makes fine professional time pieces. The few models that have made it to Alaska are highly regarded especially for the value and novelty one gets with the brand. NZ is far from AK as you can get!
The case back is a pretty good rendering of the Drakensberg 👍🏻

You're a brave man Jody and admire that. This Tugela watch matches your Erebus in many ways. Great review and I love the double drab colourway and engineer bracelet displayed here. Where it loses out against the Erebus is on price versus specifications. Great packaging and creative to boot. It is quite a rival to the Erebus except for the price and quality of the nylon strap. No on the fly clasp means its below the Erebus in my books. Good, fair review.
I definitely appreciate the originality here. I think I'd have to wear it on an alternate strap as the weight with bracelet is a bit more than I like. To be fair, my King Turtle on bracelet is around the same weight. It's not a knock on the watch, but just a preference. I only kept my King Turtle on the bracelet for a couple weeks, and have been enjoying it on MN style or rubber straps since. Not counting the generous discount, at the price point I'd rather just see a jump up in price to cover a Miyota 9 series movement and a slightly thinner case. Niggle: I'd rather see a flat crystal as the distortion as you turned it didn't really seem to fit the overall rugged nature. Seems more fitting on a retro watch. I concur on the quick adjust, but absolutely do not expect it at the price point (yet). It's just a nice to have. I absolutely love the original markers and the inspiration here. No Rolex feel at all. The lume and the date are all spot on. While I was on their site, I looked at the Tugela GMT. Quite a price jump for the obvious reason Swiss GMT movement reason, but I wonder if they're considering a newer version with the Miyota 9075 at some point. 🤔 The Draken Tugela definitely stands out from the pack of microbrands.
Lovely. Wish you and this guy would take a tip from car manufacturers and offer upgrades. Like a better movement and maybe case hardening. 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder and a V8 , nh35, hibeat and Swiss.
This is really a solid offering. I generally like bright gemmy looking watches but the drab green works here knowing its African heritage. Case engraving doesnt bother me here. Good review.

Yes very interesting indices, not sure if I actually like them. I do really like the handset though, the tapered shape and orange minute hand get a thumbs up from me.
Last time I was this early, Jody's only watch was a Seiko 5.
Lots to like about this one. Love the angular case look, especially the 'cupcake' angles where the sides match up with the bezel.
I love the crown, and don't mind the "Draken" etched into the side of the case. The bracelet is good too, shame there's no 'on the fly'.
Edit: Oh, and I LOVE the logo.

Not sure if it's the angle, but on the macro shots one can see that the date window orange circle seems to be a bit misaligned. Sloppy printing?

Well that's a bit different, I'm not sure about the dial markers, as they seem like every marker ever thrown on the dial to be a bit different? Then there's the case, having your brand name embossed/engraved into the case just reminds me of an Invicta. So I need to be further convinced about this brand and model!
Really like this watch, but the website is showing different size specs than what you posted in the video. Curious which is correct. They say 42x48.5mm rather than the 41.5x47.6mm that you listed. Did you take your own measurements?

Perhaps I'm becoming a bit jaded about all these NH3* dive watches (I have plenty already, so it's not snobbery about them), but aside from the packaging, I wouldn't say this offers anything particularly novel.
Smart marketing to feature another watch with the same movement as Erebus but with higher price-point. Highlights that Erebus is a value.
The more I have and look at the fussier I get though it does help putting the brakes on my purchasing. I'm ok with the case, engraving, finish, bracelet, size, weight and clasp... but don't like the shape/ proportions of the hour hand.
Nice watch but, I go with an Erebus instead.

Some interesting design choices which, I quite like. I would happily lose 100m of water resistance to lose 2mm from the thickness though.

@@metatechnologist I know it's not the same thing but I got my Cadisen with Miyota 9015 and curved sapphire for just over $100. "Chunky diver with an NH35" market is already super, super saturated. Hard to get excited about any of these.

I appreciate your giving their watch another look, Jody. But I weighed in on my experience with my Tugela a while ago. I would have been happy if the alignment on mine was as good as that. But it wasn't. And Draken would not stand behind the defect. Thumbs up for your review...thumbs down for Draken and their unwillingness to stand behind their product.
Erebus sounds like Airbus to me, a pilot’s watch should be the next one!

I very much like the conical case and lugs including the side signature which I think is a feature of military type pieces.
The Nylon strap is perhaps intended to develop a worn look?
The dial is also slightly different to most.
And a useful box is a really good idea.
I’ve been to the Drakensberg mountains which are beautiful as is most of this amazing country.
I understood the case back artwork which is cool.
It looks better in the video than the thumbnail so I imagine in reality it’s a quality and attractive watch. 👍
