  • Since the Erebus Origin "Just One More Microbrand Dive Watch" turned out to be so popular, I've decided to follow up my previous unboxing with some additional thoughts on the Erebus Origin as well as some shots of the watch outside in natural lighting.
    Thank you all again for the positive feedback on the Erebus video! Thank you Jody and Steven for creating such a great watch!
    The Erebus Origin is a no-nonsense diver with build quality and brushed finishing suitable for every day use. The size, bracelet, straps and dial color options make this a versatile offering that will appeal to most watch enthusiasts. It's 41mm size wears great on me and the NH35 Seiko movement powering the watch is a very reliable choice.
    The watch can be found at: erebuswatches.com/collections...

    Jody played it safe with this design on the first watch - it is safely in the Helm, Zelos, Henry Archer microbrand territory - in terms of design. That is the only complaint I have for this awesome watch. I think now that this launch is a success Jody has the room and the momentum to take more design chances. Can't wait to see hat they come up with next.

      Can’t tell what Erebus is apart from spec monster, so feels like a cash grab instead of brand building. Helm and Zelos have their unique brand
      identity and have stood the test of time. Need to wait for the third Erebus to see if the identity comes out.

      @@wayn0 I'll admit that on paper the watch comes across as some sort of Helm copy-cat, but in-hand I feel that I can really appreciate some of the design language and choices they made. I'm on record stating that I was not crazy about the watch design when it first released. I had no idea I would end up liking it as much as I do.

    I was a bit the same. I ordered not being completely in love with it, but I wanted to support Jody as I’ve loved his channel for ages, and I didn’t have a purple dial watch so that’s what I went with. Fast forward to it arriving and after 4 hours of it on my wrist I was in love and ordered another in red, this time with the opposite bracelet option to my first one. The clasp is sold on Ali express for around UK £ 40 as a San Martin , delivered to the uk inc taxes around £50 ! My Seestern Glashutte homage actually came with it ( not seesterns own version as seen in some reviews ) with the Seestern logo . So that must add quite a cost to the bracelet package even at Oem cost. I’ve fitted a few of the AE on the fly clasps that are actuated externally by two additional push buttons . Not the same quality but so far work very well cost £10 - £15 each delivered . My wrist swells and contracts quite a lot with my work and simply pushing the buttons a couple of times a day is so easy and as my collection comprises watches that are a measure cheaper than the Erebus I’m happy with the cost / quality compromise. Thanks for the update .

    Have the black dial, and LOVE IT! The lume is Amazing and lasts all night, the fit is perfect with the the flat h-link bracelet. The attention to detail there puts most brands to shame. the adjust ability makes it simple to fine tune and the adjustable slider in the clasp also makes sizing easy. The addition of the self contained spring bars at the ends makes removing and replacing the bracelet a 30 second affair. This piece is a strap monster! One can tell that Jody and team really put their soul into this watch, It doesn't break new ground with design, but it is what Jody intended. A Dam fine tool watch that has the specs to do the job right the first time. Only thing I would add would be a to have lume on the Erebus name and logo.
    Cant wait to see what Erebus does next.

    My wife also loved my blue Origin and she does not care about my watches at all. I love the dial and love the glittery/silvery effect. My one minor complaint is that the female end-link has very little articulation so it's effectively just a male end-link. And it needed some regulation out of the box.

    • @gadgetbeacon
      @gadgetbeacon  4 месяца назад +1

      @@gadgetbeacon Mine was within spec too at +12s/d dial down. But after lots of highly accurate watches and knowing that the NH35 can be capable of, it's running +/-0s/d when worn. That puts it on par with my BB54 for significantly less spend.

      Mine was +22 s/d dial up when it arrived. After wearing it for almost a fortnight to "bed it in", I've regulated it to -1 s/d. We'll see how long I can stand it before I have to fiddle again. Btw, there was a large variation in timing between horizontal and vertical positions that I've not encountered before with this movement.

Last week I got my purple Erebus and I can fully agree with what you stated, I am very happy with my purchase. Nice video, good points! Just got the purple version of this, amazing watch! The only things I have a different view on are the lugs and the clasp. 21 mm lugs are terrible if you want to swap different straps, NATOs and straight-end bracelets (looking at you, Seiko Flighty). 20 mm is a blessing. I also absolutely love the adjustability of the clasp. But that's just me, everybody is different.

    This a great looking watch and I like everything about it. I do like the discussion of a wider bracelet, only because I prefer a 22mm bracelet or strap. My Steeldive with 6 micro adjust positions milled scissor, pressed top, works great and looks good enough for me. Nice review!

    San martin was a poor choice of comparison for an AE brand as the Erebus Origins are made by San Martin in the same factory 😅

I chose orange dial… I am an avid collector, 50+ with almost half being micro brands… it’s everything I hoped for this price point… It checks all the boxes with specifications… And I think the watch where is great… Reminds me of Zelos’s first offering with the swordfish… safe choices, but loaded with specifications and value for the buck… my only criticism of the watch is that the bracelet, all the fluid and easy to resize, has edges on the links that are quite sharp and it’s noticeable while wearing… A little beveled edge on the links would go along way to making this an ideal GADA watch.

    By the way, the same people frothing over Zelos criticised this watch for being “just another AliExpress watch with the Erebus logo” … I love Zelos as well, but to say this made in China watch is crap because it’s made in China and then gush over Zelos (which I guarantee is also made in China, probably the same factory lol)… righto!

      i am not a fan of zelos because they are very overpriced, but their dials and designs are unique. if i had a choice between a zelos and erebus, i would go for the zelos just because i like their designs, which i find a lot more value in, rather than the erebus which only has the association with a watch youtuber as its attraction.
      both brands are very overpriced for what they are, erebus because they're basically just a steeldive / addiesdive with a different logo and a huge markup, and zelos because they are putting nh35s in watches that they charge 400 - 600 dollars for, which is ridiculous

      Steel is steel. Would I prefer a watch made in the US, UK, Australia, etc? Maybe, but only for geopolitical reasons. The design is done on a computer so I’d be looking at the same watch more or less no matter where it’s from. The big difference between China and elsewhere usually is in the finishing and QC. I’m happy with both of those on this watch.

    • @gadgetbeacon

    Solid watch; rugged appearance, ideally sized, easy to read, great lume. But, where I live, Apple devices rule absolutely. Analog watches are generally considered to be relics of the Boomer age, obsolete, unreadable, mildly amusing.

    I received the Teal and it is amazing in person. Obviously it has the same texture as your dial, but none of the silvery shine.
    TBH, the silver tone seems like a manufacturing defect. You purchased a WHITE dial in good faith, not a silver one. Changing the description on the web site in an attempt to 'fix' the issue is not something I can get behind, and honestly, I expect better from Jody and team. NOT a good look for your first release. The photo on the site is clearly a pre-prod in white, so something along the way got messed up. Instead of just shipping, Erebus should have reached out to purchasers of the white dial and either offered a discount, exchange for a different color, or refund. Is it a hit on the bottom line? Absolutely. Does it build a better relationship for future purchases? You bet it does.

    • @gadgetbeacon
      @gadgetbeacon  4 месяца назад +1

      To be fair I saw a rendered image and you could still make an argument that this is white, just more shimmery. I won’t be pursuing it, I like it as-is. Just wanted to add context

    Like many watches, it has a very small date window with numbers difficult to read for those of us without perfect vision. If the arabics on a dial were as small as the numbers in this type of date window, people would call the watch illegible. I'm happy with no date on a watch, but if there's going to be one, it should be large and legible, or have a cyclops lens over it.

    • @gadgetbeacon
      @gadgetbeacon  4 месяца назад

      I agree with the date window complaint. I bought the yellow dial, love the legibility except the tiny white print on black background for the date window. I can't read it without glasses.

      My eyesight is not the greatest (I'm in my mid 40s) but I don't really mind the tiny date window numbers. I very rarely need to look at my watch to find out the date, so a bit of squinting to read it every now and then is fine with me.
